5 En tid senare återvände Jesus till Jerusalem för att delta i en av de religiösa högtiderna.
2 Inne i staden, nära Fårporten, fanns Betesdadammen som omgavs av täckta terrasser och fem pelargångar.
3 Många lama, blinda och andra handikappade låg på terrasserna och väntade på att vattnet skulle komma i rörelse.
4 (En Herrens ängel kom nämligen nu och då ner och rörde upp vattnet, och den som sedan först steg ner i det blev botad.)
5 En av männen som låg där hade varit förlamad i trettioåtta år.
6 När Jesus såg honom och tänkte på hur länge han hade varit sjuk, frågade han honom: Vill du bli frisk?
7 Det är omöjligt, sa mannen. Jag har ingen som hjälper mig ner i dammen när vattnet kommer i rörelse. Innan jag hinner ner kommer alltid någon annan före mig.
8 Jesus sa då till honom: Res dig upp, rulla ihop din sovmatta och gå hem!
9 Men det var på en sabbat som detta under hände,
10 och därför protesterade de judiska ledarna. Du får inte arbeta på sabbaten, sa de till mannen som blivit botad. Det är förbjudet att bära den där sovmattan!
11 Han som botade mig sa till mig att göra det, svarade han.
12 Vem var det? frågade de.
13 Mannen visste det inte, och Jesus hade försvunnit i trängseln.
14 Senare träffade Jesus mannen i templet och sa då till honom: Nu är du frisk. Synda inte mera, för då kommer något ännu värre att hända dig.
15 Då gick mannen till de judiska ledarna och talade om för dem att det var Jesus som hade botat honom.
Jesus gör anspråk på att vara Guds son
16 Från och med nu började de att förfölja Jesus, eftersom han till och med botade sjuka på sabbaten.
17 Men Jesus sa till dem: Min Far gör hela tiden det som är gott och jag följer bara hans exempel.
18 Då blev de judiska ledarna ännu mer ivriga att döda honom. De menade att han hade brutit både mot sabbatslagarna och talat om Gud som sin Far. På det sättet hade han jämställt sig med Gud.
19 Men Jesus svarade dem: Sonen kan inte göra något av sig själv. Han gör bara vad han ser Fadern göra, och det Fadern gör det gör också Sonen.
20 För Fadern älskar Sonen och visar honom allt han gör. Och han ska låta Sonen göra ännu större under, så stora att ni häpnar.
21 Han ska till och med uppväcka vem han vill från de döda på samma sätt som Fadern gör det.
22 Och Fadern har överlåtit åt Sonen att döma över allt,
23 för att alla ska ära Sonen på samma sätt som de ärar Fadern. Men om ni vägrar att ära Guds Son, som han har sänt till er, ärar ni inte heller Fadern.
24 Jag lovar er att den som lyssnar till mina ord och tror på Gud som har sänt mig, han har evigt liv och kommer aldrig att dömas för sina synder, utan har redan gått över från döden till livet.
25 Och jag försäkrar er att den tid kommer, ja den är faktiskt redan här, när de döda ska höra Guds Sons röst, och de som lyssnar ska leva.
26 Fadern har liv i sig själv, och han har också gett Sonen liv i sig själv.
27 Och han har gett honom rätt att döma människornas alla synder, därför att han är Människosonen.
28 Bli inte förvånade. Tiden är verkligen inne när alla de döda ska höra Guds Sons röst
29 och stå upp igen - de som har gjort gott till evigt liv och de som levt i ondska till dom.
30 Men jag dömer ingen utan att lyssna till min Far. Och min dom är absolut rättvis. Jag dömer inte efter min egen vilja utan efter Guds. Det är ju han som har sänt mig.
Jesus bevisar vem han är
31 När jag påstår något om mig själv så tror man mig inte,
32-33 men också Johannes döparen påstår detta om mig. Ni har hört honom predika, och jag kan försäkra er att det han säger om mig är sant.
34 För min del behöver jag inte något vittnesbörd av människor, utan jag säger detta för att ni ska tro mig och bli frälsta.
35 Johannes var ett skinande ljus som lyste klart under en tid, och det ljuset hade ni alla stor glädje av.
36 Men om mig vittnar det som har större kraft än Johannes vittnesbörd. Se på de under jag gör! Min Far har gett mig i uppdrag att göra dem och de bevisar att han har sänt mig.
37 Och Fadern själv har också vittnat om mig, även om han inte visat sig personligen för er eller talat direkt till er.
38 Men hans ord gör inte intryck på er, och ni vill inte tro på den som är sänd till er med Guds budskap.
39 Ni forskar i Skrifterna för ni tror att de ger er evigt liv. Men Skrifterna pekar på mig och
40 ändå vill ni inte komma till mig så att jag får ge er evigt liv.
41-42 Vad ni tycker spelar egentligen ingen roll för jag vet att ni inte har Guds kärlek inom er.
43 Jag vet det för jag har kommit till er för att representera min Far, och ni vägrar att ta emot mig. Däremot tar ni genast emot dem som inte är sända av honom, utan bara representerar sig själva.
44 Inte undra på att ni inte kan tro för ni ärar gärna varandra, men bryr er inte om den ära som kommer från den ende Guden!
45 Ändå är det inte jag som ska anklaga er för detta inför min Far. Mose kommer att göra det! Ja, just Mose, till vars lagar ni ställer ert hopp om himlen.
46 Om ni verkligen trodde på Mose så skulle ni också tro det jag säger, för det är om mig han har skrivit.
47 Men eftersom ni inte tror på vad han skrev, så är det inte att undra på att ni inte heller tror på mig.

5 Därefter inföll en av judarnas högtider, och Jesus for upp till Jerusalem.
2 Vid Fårporten i Jerusalem ligger en damm, på hebreiska kallad Betesda, och invid den finnas fem pelargångar.
3 I dessa lågo många sjuka, blinda, halta, förtvinade.
4 5 Där fanns nu en man som hade varit sjuk i trettioåtta år.
6 Då Jesus fick se denne, där han låg, och fick veta att han redan lång tid hade varit sjuk, sade han till honom: »Vill du bliva frisk?»
7 Den sjuke svarade honom: »Herre, jag har ingen som hjälper mig ned i dammen, när vattnet har kommit i rörelse; och så stiger en annan ditned före mig, medan jag ännu är på väg.»
8 Jesus sade till honom: »Stå upp, tag din säng och gå.»
9 Och strax blev mannen frisk och tog sin säng och gick. Men det var sabbat den dagen.
10 Därför sade judarna till mannen som hade blivit botad: »Det är sabbat; det är icke lovligt för dig att bära sängen.»
11 Men han svarade dem: »Den som gjorde mig frisk, han sade till mig: 'Tag din säng och gå.'»
12 Då frågade de honom: »Vem var den mannen som sade till dig att du skulle taga sin säng och gå?»
13 Men mannen som hade blivit botad visste icke vem det var; ty Jesus hade dragit sig undan, eftersom mycket folk var där på platsen. --
14 Sedan träffade Jesus honom i helgedomen och sade till honom: »Se, du har blivit frisk; synda icke härefter, på det att icke något värre må vederfaras dig.»
15 Mannen gick då bort och omtalade för judarna, att det var Jesus som hade gjort honom frisk.
16 Därför förföljde nu judarna Jesus, eftersom han gjorde sådant på sabbaten.
17 Men han svarade dem: »Min Fader verkar ännu alltjämt; så verkar ock jag.»
18 Och därför stodo judarna ännu mer efter att döda honom, eftersom han icke allenast ville göra sabbaten om intet, utan ock kallade Gud sin Fader och gjorde sig själv lik Gud.
19 Då talade Jesus åter och sade till dem: »Sannerligen, sannerligen säger jag eder: Sonen kan icke göra något av sig själv, utan han gör allenast vad han ser Fadern göra; ty vad han gör, det gör likaledes ock Sonen.
20 Ty Fadern älskar Sonen och låter honom se allt vad han själv gör; och större gärningar, än dessa äro, skall han låta honom se, så att I skolen förundra eder.
21 Ty såsom Fadern uppväcker döda och gör dem levande, så gör ock Sonen levande vilka han vill.
22 Icke heller dömer Fadern någon, utan all dom har han överlåtit åt Sonen,
23 för att alla skola ära Sonen såsom de ära Faderns. Den som icke ärar Sonen, han ärar icke heller Fadern, som har sänt honom.
24 Sannerligen, sannerligen säger jag eder: Den som hör mina ord och tror honom som har sänt mig, han har evigt liv och kommer icke under någon dom, utan har övergått från döden till livet.
25 Sannerligen säger jag eder: Den stund kommer, jag, den är redan inne, så de döda skola höra Guds Sons röst, och de som höra den skola bliva levande.
26 Ty såsom Fadern har liv i sig själv, så har han ock givit åt Sonen att hava liv i sig själv.
27 Och han har givit honom makt att hålla dom, eftersom han är Människoson.
28 Förundren eder icke över detta. Ty den stund kommer, då alla som äro i gravarna skola höra hans röst
29 och gå ut ur dem: de som hava gjort vad gott är skola uppstå till liv, och de som hava gjort vad ont är skola uppstå till dom.
30 Jag kan icke göra något av mig själv. Såsom jag hör, så dömer jag; och min dom är rättvis, ty jag söker icke min vilja, utan dens vilja, som har sänt mig.
31 Om jag själv vittnar om mig, så gäller icke mitt vittnesbörd.
32 Men det är en annan som vittnar om mig, och jag vet att hans vittnesbörd om mig är sant.
33 I haven sänt bud till Johannes, och han har vittnat för sanningen,
34 Dock, det är icke av någon människa som jag tager emot vittnesbörd om mig; men jag säger detta, för att I skolen bliva frälsta.
35 Han var den brinnande, skinande lampan, och för en liten stund villen I fröjdas i dess ljus.
36 Men jag har ett vittnesbörd om mig, som är förmer än Johannes' vittnesbörd: de gärningar som Fadern har givit mig att fullborda, just de gärningar som jag gör, de vittna om mig, att Fadern har sänt mig.
37 Ja, Fadern, som har sänt mig, han har själv vittnat om mig. Hans röst haven I aldrig någonsin hört, ej heller haven I sett hans gestalt,
38 och hans ord haven I icke låtit förbliva i eder. Ty den han har sänt, honom tron I icke.
39 I rannsaken skrifterna, därför att I menen eder i dem hava evigt liv; och det är dessa som vittna om mig.
40 Men I viljen icke komma till mig för att få liv.
41 Jag tager icke emot pris av människor;
42 men jag känner eder och vet att I icke haven Guds kärlek i eder.
43 Jag har kommit i min Faders namn, och I tagen icke emot mig; kommer en annan i sitt eget namn, honom skolen I nog mottaga.
44 Huru skullen I kunna tro, I som tagen emot pris av varandra och icke söken det pris som kommer från honom som allena är Gud?
45 Menen icke att det är jag som skall anklaga eder hos Fadern. Den som anklagar eder är Moses, han till vilken I sätten edert hopp.
46 Trodden I Moses, så skullen I ju tro mig, ty om mig har han skrivit.
47 Men tron I icke hans skrifter, huru skolen I då kunna tro mina ord?»

Jesus botar en sjuk man vid Betesda
5 Därefter inföll en av judarnas högtider, och Jesus gick upp till Jerusalem. 2 Vid Fårporten i Jerusalem finns en damm som på hebreiska heter Betesda. Den har fem pelargångar, 3 och i dem låg många sjuka, blinda, halta och lama.[a] 5 Där fanns en man som hade varit sjuk i trettioåtta år. 6 Då Jesus såg honom ligga där och visste att mannen hade varit sjuk så länge, sade han till honom: "Vill du bli frisk?" 7 Den sjuke svarade honom: "Herre, jag har ingen som leder mig ner i dammen när vattnet kommer i rörelse, och när jag själv försöker ta mig dit, hinner någon annan före mig." 8 Jesus sade till honom: "Stig upp, ta din bädd och gå!" 9 Genast blev mannen frisk och tog sin bädd och gick.
Men det var sabbat den dagen, 10 och judarna sade till mannen som hade blivit botad: "Det är sabbat. Du får inte bära din bädd." 11 Han svarade dem: "Den som gjorde mig frisk sade till mig: Ta din bädd och gå!" 12 Då frågade de: "Vem var det som sade åt dig att du skulle ta din bädd och gå?" 13 Men han som hade blivit botad visste inte vem det var. Jesus hade nämligen dragit sig undan, eftersom det var mycket folk på platsen.
14 Senare träffade Jesus honom på tempelplatsen och sade till honom: "Se, du har blivit frisk. Synda inte mer, så att inte något värre drabbar dig." 15 Mannen gick då till judarna och sade att det var Jesus som hade gjort honom frisk. 16 Därför började judarna förfölja Jesus, eftersom han gjorde sådant på en sabbat. 17 Men han sade till dem: "Min Fader verkar ännu i denna stund. Så verkar även jag." 18 Då blev judarna ännu ivrigare att döda honom, eftersom han inte bara upphävde sabbaten utan också sade att Gud var hans Fader och gjorde sig själv lik Gud.
Jesu förhållande till sin Fader
19 Jesus svarade dem: "Amen, amen säger jag er: Sonen kan inte göra något av sig själv, utan endast det han ser Fadern göra. Ty vad Fadern gör, det gör Sonen. 20 Fadern älskar Sonen och visar honom allt vad han själv gör, och större gärningar än dessa skall han visa honom, så att ni kommer att häpna. 21 Ty liksom Fadern uppväcker de döda och ger dem liv, så ger Sonen liv åt vilka han vill. 22 Inte heller dömer Fadern någon, utan hela domen har han överlämnat åt Sonen, 23 för att alla skall ära Sonen liksom de ärar Fadern. Den som inte ärar Sonen ärar inte heller Fadern, som har sänt honom.
24 Amen, amen säger jag er: Den som hör mitt ord och tror på honom som har sänt mig, han har evigt liv och kommer inte under domen utan har övergått från döden till livet. 25 Amen, amen säger jag er: Den stund kommer, ja, den är nu inne, när de döda skall höra Guds Sons röst, och de som hör den skall få liv. 26 Ty liksom Fadern har liv i sig själv, så har han gett åt Sonen att ha liv i sig själv. 27 Och han har gett honom makt att hålla dom, eftersom han är Människoson. 28 Förvåna er inte över detta, ty den stund kommer, då alla som är i gravarna skall höra hans röst 29 och gå ut ur dem. 31 Om jag själv vittnar om mig, är mitt vittnesbörd inte giltigt. 32 Det är en annan som vittnar om mig, och jag vet att hans vittnesbörd om mig är sant. 33 Ni har sänt bud till Johannes, och han har vittnat för sanningen. 34 Jag tar inte emot vittnesbördet från någon människa, men jag säger detta för att ni skall bli frälsta. 35 Han var en lampa som brann och lyste, och en kort tid ville ni glädja er i hans ljus. 36 Själv har jag ett vittnesbörd som är förmer än Johannes vittnesbörd: de gärningar som Fadern har gett mig att fullborda, just de gärningar jag utför, vittnar om att Fadern har sänt mig. 37 Fadern som har sänt mig har vittnat om mig. Hans röst har ni aldrig hört, och hans gestalt har ni aldrig sett, 38 och hans ord har inte förblivit i er, eftersom ni inte tror på den som han har sänt. 39 Ni forskar i Skrifterna, därför att ni tror att ni har evigt liv i dem, och det är dessa som vittnar om mig. 40 Men ni vill inte komma till mig för att få liv.
41 Jag tar inte emot ära av människor. 42 Jag känner er och vet att ni inte har Guds kärlek i er. 43 Jag har kommit i min Faders namn, och ni tar inte emot mig. Men kommer det någon annan i sitt eget namn, honom tar ni emot. 44 Hur skall ni kunna tro, ni som tar emot ära av varandra och inte söker den ära som kommer från den ende Guden? 45 Tro inte att jag skall anklaga er inför Fadern. Den som anklagar er är Mose, han som ni har satt ert hopp till. 46 Om ni trodde Mose, skulle ni tro på mig, ty om mig har han skrivit. 47 Men tror ni inte hans skrifter, hur skall ni då kunna tro mina ord?"

Jesus Goes To Jerusalem For a Feast, And Heals a Man On The Sabbath
5 After these things there was a Feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now in Jerusalem near the Sheep gate, there is a pool— the one being called Bethzatha in Hebrew, having five porticos[a]. 3 In these porticos, a multitude of the ones being sick were lying-down— blind ones, lame ones, withered ones. 4 [b] 5 And there was a certain man there having thirty and eight years in his sickness. 6 Jesus— having seen this one lying down, and having known[c] that he already had a long time [in his sickness]— says to him, “Do you want to become healthy?” 7 The one being sick answered Him, “Sir, I do not have a man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred-up. But while I am going, another goes down before me”. 8 Jesus says to him, “Arise, pick up your cot and walk!” 9 And immediately the man became healthy, and picked up his cot and was walking.
They Want To Kill Jesus Because He Breaks The Sabbath And Makes Himself Equal To God
Now it was a Sabbath on that day. 10 So the Jews were saying to the one having been cured, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to pick up your cot”. 11 But the one answered them, “The One having made me healthy, that One said to me, ‘Pick up your cot and walk’”. 12 They asked him, “Who is the man having said to you, ‘Pick up and walk’?” 13 But the one having been healed did not know who He was. For Jesus withdrew, a crowd being in the place. 14 After these things, Jesus finds him in the temple. And He said to him, “See— you have become healthy! Do not be sinning any longer in order that something worse may not happen to you”. 15 The man went away and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the One having made him healthy. 16 And for this reason, the Jews were persecuting Jesus— because He was doing these things on a Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and[d] I am working”. 18 Therefore, for this reason the Jews were seeking more to kill Him: because He was not only breaking[e] the Sabbath, but He was also calling God His own Father, making Himself equal[f] to God! 19 Therefore Jesus responded and was saying to them—
Jesus Responds Regarding His Work: The Son Does Only What The Father Does
“Truly, truly, I say to you— the Son can do nothing from Himself except[g] something He sees the Father doing. For whatever things that One is doing, these things the Son is also likewise doing. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing. And He will show Him greater works than these, in order that you may marvel.
The Son Raises And Judges The Dead, And Thus Is Due Equal Honor With God
21 “For[h] just as the Father raises the dead and gives-life-to them, so also the Son gives-life-to the ones whom He wishes[i]. 22 For the Father does not even judge anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 in order that all may honor the Son just-as[j] they are honoring the Father. The one not honoring the Son is not honoring the Father having sent Him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you that the one hearing My word and believing the One having sent Me has eternal life. And he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
The Son Has Life In Himself And Gives Life To The Spiritually Dead
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and the ones having heard will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He gave to the Son to have life in Himself. 27 And He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is a son[k] of man.
The Son Will Give Life To The Physically Dead
28 Do not be marveling-at this, because an hour is coming in which all the ones in the graves will hear His voice, 29 and will come out— the ones having done the good things to a resurrection of life; the ones having practiced the bad things to a resurrection of judgment.
I Am Doing The Will of The One Who Sent Me
30 “I can do nothing from Myself. Just as I am hearing[l], I am judging. And My judgment is righteous, because I am not seeking My will, but the will of the One having sent Me.
Jesus Responds Regarding His Identity: Others Testify About Him
31 “If I am[m] testifying about Myself, My testimony is not true. 32 There is Another— the One testifying about Me— and I know that the testimony which He is testifying about Me is true.
John The Baptist Testified
33 “You have sent out messengers to John, and he has testified to the truth[n]. 34 But I do not receive[o] testimony from a human. Nevertheless, I am saying these things in order that you may be saved. 35 That one was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to be overjoyed in his light for an hour.
Three Greater Witnesses Testify: My Works, The Father, And The Scriptures
36 “But I have testimony greater than John’s. For the works which the Father has given to Me that I should accomplish them— the works themselves which I am doing are testifying about Me, that the Father has sent Me forth. 37 And the Father having sent Me— that One has testified about Me. Neither His voice have you ever heard, nor His form have you seen. 38 And you do not have His word abiding in you, because the One Whom that One sent-forth— this One you are not believing! 39 You[p] search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life— and those Scriptures are the ones testifying about Me! 40 And you are not willing to come to Me in order that you may have life.
But You Are Not Receiving Me Because You Do Not Love God
41 “I do not receive glory from people, 42 but I know you— that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in the name of My Father, and you are not receiving Me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive that one. 44 How are you able to believe while receiving glory from one another, and you are not seeking the glory from the only God?
Moses Will Be Your Accuser. For If You Believed Him, You Would Believe Me
45 Do not be thinking that I will accuse you before the Father. The one accusing you is Moses, in whom you have put-hope. 46 For if you were believing Moses, you would be believing Me, for that one wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe the writings of that one, how will you believe My words?”

The Healing at the Pool
5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)
11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Authority of the Son
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)
19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)
Testimonies About Jesus
31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.
33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.
41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)
45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)
