Nikodemos besöker Jesus om natten
3 Där fanns en farisé[a] som hette Nikodemos och som var medlem i det judiska rådet[b]. 2 Han kom till Jesus en natt och sa: ”Rabbi, vi vet att du är en lärare som har kommit från Gud. Ingen kan göra sådana tecken som du gör om inte Gud är med honom.”
3 Men Jesus svarade: ”Ja, sannerligen säger jag dig: den som inte föds på nytt[c] får aldrig se Guds rike.”
4 ”Hur kan någon födas på nytt när man är gammal?” undrade Nikodemos. ”Man kan väl inte komma in i sin moders liv och födas igen?”
5 Jesus svarade: ”Ja, sannerligen säger jag dig: den som inte blir född av vatten och Ande får överhuvudtaget inte komma in i Guds rike. 6 Det som föds på mänskligt sätt är mänskligt, men det som föds av Anden är andligt. 7 Förvåna dig därför inte över att jag säger att ni måste födas på nytt[d]. 8 Vinden[e] blåser vart den vill. Du hör den blåsa men kan inte säga varifrån den kommer eller vart den tar vägen. Så är det också med var och en som är född av Anden.”
9 ”Men hur är detta möjligt?” frågade Nikodemos.
10 Jesus svarade: ”Du är en Israels lärare och förstår inte det här? 11 Ja, sannerligen säger jag dig: det vi talar om är sådant vi vet, och vi vittnar om det vi har sett, och ändå tar ni inte emot vårt vittnesbörd. 12 Om ni inte tror när jag talar till er om det jordiska, hur ska ni då kunna tro när jag talar om det himmelska? 13 Ingen har ju stigit upp till himlen, utom Människosonen, som har kommit ner därifrån. 14 På samma sätt som Mose hängde upp kopparormen i öknen måste Människosonen lyftas upp[f], 15 för att alla som tror på honom ska ha evigt liv.”[g]
16 Så älskade Gud världen att han gav den sin ende Son, för att de som tror på honom inte ska gå förlorade utan ha evigt liv. 17 Det var inte för att döma världen som Gud sände sin Son, utan för att världen skulle räddas genom honom. 18 Den som tror på honom blir inte dömd. Men den som inte tror är redan dömd, eftersom han inte tror på Guds ende Sons namn. 19 Och detta är domen, att när ljuset kom ner till världen, älskade människorna mörkret mer än ljuset, eftersom deras handlingar var onda. 20 Den som gör det som är ont, hatar ljuset. Han håller sig borta från ljuset, så att hans gärningar inte ska avslöjas. 21 Men den som gör det som är sanningsenligt dras till ljuset, för att det ska synas att han gör det som Gud vill.
Johannes döparen berättar vem Jesus är
22 Sedan gick Jesus tillsammans med sina lärjungar till Judeen där de stannade en tid och döpte. 23 Samtidigt höll Johannes på att döpa vid Ainon, nära Salim, där det fanns gott om vatten, och folk kom dit för att döpas. 24 Det var innan Johannes hade satts i fängelse. 25 En gång kom några av Johannes lärjungar att diskutera olika reningsceremonier[h] med en jude. 26 De gick då till Johannes och sa: ”Rabbi, mannen som var tillsammans med dig på andra sidan Jordanfloden, han som du vittnade om, han döper också, och nu går alla till honom.”
27 Men Johannes svarade: ”Ingen kan ta emot något som inte ges honom från himlen.” 28 Ni kan själva vittna om att jag har sagt att jag inte är Messias. Jag är utsänd för att gå framför honom. 29 Bruden tillhör sin brudgum. Och brudgummens vän gläds åt att få stå och lyssna till brudgummen. Den glädjen är nu fullständigt min. 30 Han ska bli större och jag mindre.
31 ”Han som har kommit från ovan är över alla andra. Den som kommer från jorden är av jorden och talar det jordiska. Den som kommer från himlen är över alla. 32 Han vittnar om det han har sett och hört, och ingen tar emot hans vittnesbörd. 33 Men den som tar emot hans vittnesbörd, bekräftar att Gud talar sanning, 34 för den som är sänd av Gud talar Guds ord. Gud ger Anden utan mått. 35 Fadern älskar Sonen och har gett honom makt över allting. 36 Den som tror på Sonen har evigt liv. Men den som vägrar att lyda Sonen ska inte se livet, utan blir kvar under Guds dom.”

Nikodemos besöker Jesus om natten
3 En kväll efter mörkrets inbrott kom en av judarnas ledare, en farisé som hette Nikodemos,
2 för att samtala med Jesus. Herre, sa han, alla vet att Gud har sänt dig för att undervisa oss. Dina under är tillräckliga bevis för detta.
3 Jesus svarade: Jag ska säga dig något mycket viktigt: Om du inte blir född på nytt kan du aldrig komma in i Guds rike.
4 Född på nytt! utropade Nikodemos. Vad menar du? Hur kan en gammal man komma in i sin mor och födas en gång till?
5 Jesus svarade: Vad jag verkligen försöker att få dig att förstå är detta: Om du inte blir född av vatten och ande kan du inte komma in i Guds rike.
6 Människor kan bara frambringa mänskligt liv, men den helige Ande ger nytt liv från himlen.
7 Förvåna dig därför inte över mitt påstående att du måste födas på nytt.
8 På samma sätt som du hör vinden, men inte kan säga varifrån den kommer eller vart den tar vägen, på samma sätt är det med varje människa som är född av Anden.
9 Vad menar du? frågade Nikodemos.
10-11 Jesus svarade: Du är ju en ansedd judisk lärare, och ändå förstår du inte detta. Jag talar om för dig vad jag vet och har sett, och ändå tror du mig inte.
12 Men om du inte ens kan tro mig när jag berättar för dig om sådant som händer här bland människorna, hur ska du då kunna tro när jag talar om det som händer i himlen?
13 För ingen människa har varit i himlen, bara Människosonen som kommit ner till jorden.
14 Och så som Mose hängde upp kopparormen på en påle i öknen, på samma sätt måste jag bli upphängd på en påle,
15 så att alla som tror på mig kan få evigt liv.
16 För Gud älskade människorna så mycket att han gav dem sin ende Son, för att de som tror på honom inte ska gå under utan ha evigt liv.
17 Gud sände inte sin Son till världen för att döma dem utan för att rädda dem.
18 De som tror på honom blir inte dömda. Men de som inte tror på honom är redan dömda för att de inte tror på Guds ende Son.
19 Och domen är grundad på detta faktum: ljuset från himlen kom till människorna, men de älskade mörkret mer än ljuset för deras handlingar var onda.
20 De hatade det himmelska ljuset, eftersom de ville synda i mörkret. De höll sig borta från ljuset för de var rädda att deras synder skulle avslöjas.
21 Men de som däremot gör vad som är rätt, kommer med glädje till ljuset för att alla ska kunna se att de gör vad Gud vill.
Johannes träder tillbaka för Jesus
22 Sedan lämnade Jesus Jerusalem tillsammans med sina lärjungar och gick till Judeen där de stannade en tid och döpte.
23-24 Vid den tiden var Johannes döparen ännu inte fängslad utan döpte vid Ainon, nära Salim, där det fanns gott om vatten. Och många människor kom till honom för att bli döpta.
25 En dag började en judisk man diskutera med Johannes lärjungar om reningsföreskrifterna.
26 Då gick lärjungarna till Johannes och sa: Mästare, mannen som du mötte på andra sidan Jordanfloden, den du sa var Messias, döper också och alla går till honom i stället för att komma till oss.
27 Johannes svarade: Gud i himlen bestämmer varje människas uppgift.
28 Min uppgift är att röja väg för denne man så att alla kan komma till honom. Ni vet själva att jag klart och tydligt sagt till er att jag inte är Messias. Jag är här för att bana väg för honom, det är allt.
29 Människorna dras naturligtvis till den som de finner mest intressant - som bruden dras till brudgummen. Och brudgummens vän, som står vid sidan om är glad för hans skull. Jag är brudgummens vän och jag gläder mig verkligen.
30 Det är som det ska att han blir större och större och jag mindre och mindre.
31 Han har kommit från himlen och är därför större än alla andra. Jag kommer från jorden, och mitt förstånd är begränsat till det jordiska.
32 Han talar om vad han har sett och hört, men det är bara några få som tror vad han talar om!
33-34 De som tror honom upptäcker att allt vad Gud har sagt är sant. Denne man, som är sänd av Gud, talar Guds ord. Gud har gett honom sin Ande i obegränsat mått.
35 Fadern älskar honom därför att han är hans Son, och han har gett honom allt som finns.
36 Och alla som tror på Guds Son har evigt liv. De som inte tror och lyder honom kommer aldrig att se himlen, utan Guds vrede drabbar dem.

Jesús y Nicodemo
3 Había un fariseo llamado Nicodemo, que era un hombre importante entre los judíos. 2 Éste fue de noche a visitar a Jesús, y le dijo:
—Maestro, sabemos que Dios te ha enviado a enseñarnos, porque nadie podría hacer los milagros que tú haces, si Dios no estuviera con él.
3 Jesús le dijo:
—Te aseguro que el que no nace de nuevo, no puede ver el reino de Dios.
4 Nicodemo le preguntó:
—¿Y cómo puede uno nacer cuando ya es viejo? ¿Acaso podrá entrar otra vez dentro de su madre, para volver a nacer?
5 Jesús le contestó:
—Te aseguro que el que no nace de agua y del Espíritu, no puede entrar en el reino de Dios. 6 Lo que nace de padres humanos, es humano; lo que nace del Espíritu, es espíritu. 7 No te extrañes de que te diga: “Todos tienen que nacer de nuevo.” 8 El viento sopla por donde quiere, y aunque oyes su ruido, no sabes de dónde viene ni a dónde va. Así son también todos los que nacen del Espíritu.
9 Nicodemo volvió a preguntarle:
—¿Cómo puede ser esto?
10 Jesús le contestó:
—¿Tú, que eres el maestro de Israel, no sabes estas cosas? 11 Te aseguro que nosotros hablamos de lo que sabemos, y somos testigos de lo que hemos visto; pero ustedes no creen lo que les decimos. 12 Si no me creen cuando les hablo de las cosas de este mundo, ¿cómo me van a creer si les hablo de las cosas del cielo?
13 »Nadie ha subido al cielo sino el que bajó del cielo; es decir, el Hijo del hombre. 14 Y así como Moisés levantó la serpiente en el desierto, así también el Hijo del hombre tiene que ser levantado, 15 para que todo el que cree en él tenga vida eterna.
El amor de Dios para el mundo
16 »Pues Dios amó tanto al mundo, que dio a su Hijo único, para que todo aquel que cree en él no muera, sino que tenga vida eterna. 17 Porque Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para salvarlo por medio de él.
18 »El que cree en el Hijo de Dios, no está condenado; pero el que no cree, ya ha sido condenado por no creer en el Hijo único de Dios. 19 Los que no creen, ya han sido condenados, pues, como hacían cosas malas, cuando la luz vino al mundo prefirieron la oscuridad a la luz. 20 Todos los que hacen lo malo odian la luz, y no se acercan a ella para que no se descubra lo que están haciendo. 21 Pero los que viven de acuerdo con la verdad, se acercan a la luz para que se vea que todo lo hacen de acuerdo con la voluntad de Dios.
Juan el Bautista vuelve a hablar de Jesús
22 Después de esto, Jesús fue con sus discípulos a la región de Judea, donde pasó algún tiempo con ellos bautizando. 23 También Juan estaba bautizando en Enón, cerca de Salim, porque allí había mucha agua; y la gente iba y era bautizada. 24 Esto sucedió antes que metieran a Juan a la cárcel.
25 Pero algunos de los seguidores de Juan comenzaron a discutir con un judío sobre el asunto de la purificación, 26 y fueron a decirle a Juan:
—Maestro, el que estaba contigo al otro lado del Jordán, de quien diste testimonio, ahora está bautizando y todos lo siguen.
27 Juan les dijo:
—Nadie puede tener nada, si Dios no se lo da. 28 Ustedes mismos me oyeron decir claramente que yo no soy el Mesías, sino uno que ha sido enviado delante de él. 29 En una boda, el que tiene a la novia es el novio; y el amigo del novio, que está allí y lo escucha, se llena de alegría al oírlo hablar. Así también mi alegría es ahora completa. 30 Él ha de ir aumentando en importancia, y yo disminuyendo.
El que viene de arriba
31 »El que viene de arriba está sobre todos. El que es de la tierra es terrenal, y habla de las cosas de la tierra. Pero el que viene del cielo está sobre todos, 32 y da testimonio de lo que ha visto y oído; pero nadie acepta su testimonio. 33 Pero si alguien lo acepta, confirma con ello que Dios dice la verdad; 34 pues el que ha sido enviado por Dios, habla las palabras de Dios, porque Dios da abundantemente su Espíritu. 35 El Padre ama al Hijo, y le ha dado poder sobre todas las cosas. 36 El que cree en el Hijo, tiene vida eterna; pero el que no quiere creer en el Hijo, no tendrá esa vida, sino que recibirá el terrible castigo de Dios.

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(A) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(B) 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(C) we know(D) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(E) you are doing if God were not with him.”(F)
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”(G)
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(H) 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit.(I) 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d](J)
9 “How can this be?”(K) Nicodemus asked.
10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(L) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(M) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(N) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(O) except the one who came from heaven(P)—the Son of Man.[e](Q) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(R) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f](S) 15 that everyone who believes(T) may have eternal life in him.”[g](U)
16 For God so loved(V) the world that he gave(W) his one and only Son,(X) that whoever believes(Y) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(Z) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world(AA) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.(AB) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,(AC) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.(AD) 19 This is the verdict: Light(AE) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.(AF) 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.(AG) 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John Testifies Again About Jesus
22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.(AH) 23 Now John(AI) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)(AJ) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.(AK) 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,(AL) that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified(AM) about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’(AN) 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom.(AO) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.(AP) 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[h]
31 The one who comes from above(AQ) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.(AR) The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard,(AS) but no one accepts his testimony.(AT) 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent(AU) speaks the words of God, for God[i] gives the Spirit(AV) without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.(AW) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,(AX) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

3 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
24 For John was not yet cast into prison.
25 Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.
26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
