Jezus verandert water in wijn
2 Op de derde dag was er een bruiloft in Kana in Galilea. Jezus' moeder was op het feest. 2 Ook Jezus en de leerlingen waren uitgenodigd. 3 Toen de wijn op was, zei Jezus' moeder tegen Hem: "Ze hebben geen wijn!" 4 Jezus zei tegen haar: "Dat weet Ik toch. Dat hoeft u Mij niet te zeggen. Maar het is nog niet de juiste tijd voor Mij om daar iets aan te doen."[a] 5 Zijn moeder zei tegen de bedienden: "Als Hij iets tegen jullie zegt, doe dat dan, wat het ook is."
6 Bij de deur stonden zes waterbakken. Dat water werd door de Joden gebruikt om daar volgens hun gewoonten de handen en voeten in te wassen. In zo'n bak kon ongeveer 2 of 3 metreten (80 of 100 liter) water. 7 Jezus zei tegen de bedienden: "Vul de bakken met water." Ze vulden ze tot aan de rand. 8 Toen zei Hij: "Schep er nu wat uit. Laat de leider van het feest daarvan proeven." 9 Toen de leider van het feest het water proefde, was het wijn geworden. Hij wist niet waar deze wijn vandaan kwam. Maar de bedienden die het uit de bak geschept hadden, wisten het wel. De leider van het feest liet de bruidegom bij zich komen. 10 Hij zei tegen hem: "Iedereen zet altijd eerst de beste wijn op tafel. En pas als de mensen veel gedronken hebben, de minder goede wijn. Maar jij hebt de beste wijn voor het laatst bewaard!"
11 Dit was het eerste wonder dat Jezus deed. Het gebeurde in Kana in Galilea. Dat wonder liet zien hoe machtig Hij is. En zijn leerlingen geloofden in Hem. 12 Daarna ging Hij naar Kapernaüm, met zijn moeder, zijn broers en zijn leerlingen. Daar bleven ze een paar dagen.
Jezus jaagt de verkopers de tempel uit
13 Het was bijna de tijd van het Joodse Paasfeest.[b] Daarom reisde Jezus naar Jeruzalem, om daar het Paasfeest te vieren. 14 Hij ging naar de tempel en zag daar de verkopers van koeien, schapen en duiven voor de offers en de geldwisselaars.[c] 15 Hij maakte van touw een zweep. Daarmee joeg Hij hen met al hun schapen en koeien de tempel uit. Het geld van de geldwisselaars gooide Hij op de grond en hun tafels keerde Hij om. 16 En tegen de duivenverkopers zei Hij: "Ga weg en neem al je spullen mee! Jullie hebben van mijn Vaders huis een markt gemaakt!" 17 Toen herinnerden zijn leerlingen zich dat er in de Boeken staat: 'Voor uw huis zal Ik alles willen doen.'
18 De Joden zeiden tegen Hem: "Hoe durft U dit te doen? Bewijs maar eens dat U dit mag!" 19 Jezus antwoordde: "Breek deze tempel af en binnen drie dagen zal Ik hem weer opbouwen." 20 De Joden zeiden: "Het heeft 46 jaar gekost om deze tempel te bouwen. Zou U dat dan in drie dagen kunnen?" 21 Maar met die tempel bedoelde Hij zijn lichaam. 22 Later, toen Hij uit de dood was opgestaan, herinnerden zijn leerlingen zich dat Hij dit had gezegd. Daarom geloofden ze toen de Boeken en wat Jezus had gezegd.
23 Toen Jezus op het Paasfeest in Jeruzalem was, geloofden veel mensen in Hem. Dat kwam door de wonderen die ze Hem zagen doen. 24 Maar Hij liet Zich nog niet door hen kennen. Want Hij wist maar al te goed hoe de mensen zijn. 25 Het was niet nodig dat iemand Hem vertelde hoe de mensen zijn. Hij wist Zelf wat er in hun hart is.

- Johannes 2:4 Jezus heeft het hier over iets anders dan Maria. Wijn is in de bijbel vaak het symbool van vergeving. Denk maar aan de wijn die bij de offers hoorde, en aan de wijn bij het laatste avondmaal die Jezus' bloed voorstelde (lees Matteüs 26:26-28). Díe 'wijn' is 'op:' de mensen hebben dringend vergeving nodig. En het is voor Hem op dat moment nog niet de juiste tijd om daar iets aan te doen. Dat gebeurt pas wanneer Hij verraden, veroordeeld en gedood wordt en weer uit de dood opstaat.
- Johannes 2:13 Met het Paasfeest vieren de Joden het vertrek van het volk Israël uit de slavernij in Egypte. Het wordt gevierd op de eerste avond van het Feest van de Ongegiste Broden. Lees Exodus 12. Tijdens de zeven dagen van het feest mag er helemaal geen brood met gist gegeten worden.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.
13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
21 But he spake of the temple of his body.
22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.
24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

4 Jesus said to her, (D)“Woman, (E)what does your concern have to do with Me? (F)My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, (G)according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted (H)the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple(M)
13 (N)Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 (O)And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers [b]doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make (P)My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, (Q)“Zeal for Your house [c]has eaten Me up.”
18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, (R)“What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”
19 Jesus answered and said to them, (S)“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
21 But He was speaking (T)of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, (U)His disciples remembered that He had said this [d]to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
The Discerner of Hearts
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the (V)signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He (W)knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for (X)He knew what was in man.

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.(A) Jesus’ mother(B) was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman,[a](C) why do you involve me?”(D) Jesus replied. “My hour(E) has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”(F)
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,(G) each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.(H) He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs(I) through which he revealed his glory;(J) and his disciples believed in him.(K)
12 After this he went down to Capernaum(L) with his mother(M) and brothers(N) and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
Jesus Clears the Temple Courts(O)
13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(P) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(Q) 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,(R) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.(S) 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house(T) into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[c](U)
18 The Jews(V) then responded to him, “What sign(W) can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”(X)
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”(Y)
20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.(Z) 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.(AA) Then they believed the scripture(AB) and the words that Jesus had spoken.
23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(AC) many people saw the signs(AD) he was performing and believed(AE) in his name.[d] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind,(AF) for he knew what was in each person.(AG)
