Jesus är den sanna vinstocken
15 Jag är den sanna vinstocken, och min Far är vinodlaren. 2 (A) Varje gren i mig som inte bär frukt tar han bort, och varje gren som bär frukt rensar han så att den bär mer frukt. 3 (B) Ni är redan nu rena i kraft av ordet som jag har talat till er.
4 (C) Förbli i mig, så förblir jag i er. Liksom grenen inte kan bära frukt av sig själv om den inte förblir i vinstocken, så kan inte heller ni det om ni inte förblir i mig. 5 (D) Jag är vinstocken, ni är grenarna. Om någon förblir i mig och jag i honom, så bär han rik frukt. Utan mig kan ni ingenting göra. 6 (E) Om någon inte förblir i mig, kastas han ut som en gren och vissnar. Sådana grenar samlar man ihop och kastar i elden, och de bränns upp. 7 (F) Om ni förblir i mig och mina ord förblir i er, så be om vad ni vill och ni ska få det. 8 (G) Min Far förhärligas när ni bär rik frukt och blir mina lärjungar.
9 Så som Fadern har älskat mig, så har jag älskat er. Bli kvar i min kärlek. 10 (H) Om ni håller mina bud blir ni kvar i min kärlek, liksom jag har hållit min Fars bud och är kvar i hans kärlek. 11 (I) Detta har jag sagt er för att min glädje ska vara i er och för att er glädje ska bli fullkomlig.
12 (J) Detta är mitt bud: att ni ska älska varandra så som jag har älskat er. 13 (K) Ingen har större kärlek än den som ger sitt liv för sina vänner. 14 (L) Ni är mina vänner, om ni gör vad jag befaller er. 15 Jag kallar er inte längre tjänare, för tjänaren vet inte vad hans herre gör. Jag kallar er vänner, för jag har låtit er veta allt som jag hört av min Far. 16 (M) Ni har inte utvalt mig, utan jag har utvalt er och bestämt er till att gå ut och bära frukt, och er frukt ska bestå. Då ska Fadern ge er vad ni än ber honom om i mitt namn. 17 Och detta befaller jag er: att ni ska älska varandra.
Hatade av världen
18 (N) Om världen hatar er, ska ni veta att den har hatat mig före er[a]. 19 (O) Hade ni tillhört världen, skulle världen ha älskat er som sina egna. Men ni tillhör inte världen, utan jag har utvalt er och tagit er ut ur världen. Därför hatar världen er. 20 (P) Kom ihåg vad jag sagt: tjänaren är inte större än sin herre. Har de förföljt mig, ska de också förfölja er. Har de bevarat mitt ord, ska de också bevara ert ord.[b] 21 (Q) Men allt detta kommer de att göra mot er för mitt namns skull, därför att de inte känner honom som har sänt mig.
22 (R) Hade jag inte kommit och talat till dem, skulle de vara utan synd[c]. Men nu har de ingen ursäkt för sin synd. 23 (S) Den som hatar mig hatar också min Far. 24 (T) Hade jag inte gjort sådana gärningar bland dem som ingen annan gjort, så skulle de vara utan synd. Men nu har de sett dem, och de har hatat både mig och min Far. 25 Så skulle ordet uppfyllas som står skrivet i deras lag: De har hatat mig utan orsak.[d]
26 (U) Men när Hjälparen kommer som jag ska sända er från Fadern, sanningens Ande som utgår från Fadern, då ska han vittna om mig. 27 (V) Också ni ska vittna, eftersom ni har varit med mig ända från början.

Vinstocken och grenarna
15 Jag är den äkta vinstocken, och min far är trädgårdsmästaren.
2 Han skär bort varje gren som inte ger någon frukt. Och han beskär de grenar som ger frukt, så att de kan ge ännu rikare skörd.
3 Eftersom ni har tagit emot de ord jag talat till er är ni redan beskurna på samma sätt som dessa grenar för att få större styrka.
4 Se därför till att ni lever i mig, och låt mig leva i er. En gren kan ju inte bära frukt om den är skild från trädet. Inte heller kan ni bära frukt om ni är skilda från mig.
5 Ja, jag är vinstocken, och ni är grenarna. Om någon lever i mig och jag i honom så ska han ge rikligt med frukt, för utan mig kan ni inte göra något.
6 Om någon vill leva utan mig kommer han på samma sätt som en gren som inte bär frukt att skäras av och kastas bort. Och de torra grenarna kommer att samlas ihop och brännas upp.
7 Men om ni alltid är i mig och lyder mina bud så kan ni be om vad ni vill, och ni ska få det.
8 De som är mina verkliga lärjungar ger rikligt med frukt, och därigenom blir min Far ärad.
9 Som Fadern älskar mig så älskar jag er. Lev i min kärlek.
10 När ni lyder mina bud lever ni i min kärlek, liksom jag lyder min Far och lever i hans kärlek.
11 Jag har sagt er detta för att min glädje ska fylla er och er glädje ska bli fullkomlig.
12 Och detta är mitt bud: Ni ska älska varandra så som jag har älskat er.
13 Den största kärleken visar någon när han ger sitt liv för sina vänner.
14 Ni är mina vänner om ni lyder mig.
15 Jag kallar er inte längre tjänare, för en herre anförtror sig inte åt sina tjänare. Nu är ni mina vänner, för jag har ju sagt er allt som Fadern har sagt mig.
16 Ni har inte utvalt mig, utan jag har utvalt er så att ni kan gå ut och bära frukt som består. Då ska Fadern ge er allt vad ni ber om i mitt namn.
Jesus förvarnar om hat och förföljelse
17 Därför säger jag er ännu en gång: Ni ska älska varandra.
18 När människorna hatar er glöm då inte att man hatade mig innan man hatade er.
19 Den här världen skulle älska er om ni tillhörde den. Men det gör ni inte - för jag har kallat er till att lämna den, och därför hatar man er.
20 Kommer ni ihåg vad jag sa till er? 'En tjänare är inte större än sin herre.' Eftersom de har förföljt mig så kommer de naturligtvis att förfölja er. Och om de lyssnar till mina ord så borde de lyssna till er.
21 Världens människor kommer att förfölja er därför att ni tillhör mig, för de känner inte Gud som har sänt mig.
22 De skulle inte vara skyldiga om jag inte hade kommit och talat till dem. Men nu har de ingen ursäkt för sin synd.
23 Den som hatar mig hatar också min Far.
24 Om jag inte framför ögonen på dem hade gjort så mäktiga under, skulle de inte vara skyldiga. Men som det nu är har de sett dessa under, och ändå hatar de oss både mig och min Far.
25 Så har det uppfyllts som profeterna förutsagt om Messias: 'De har hatat mig utan orsak.'
26 Men jag ska sända någon till er som står vid er sida och tröstar er - den helige Ande som är sanningens Ande. Han kommer till er från Fadern, och han ska berätta allt om mig.
27 Och ni måste också berätta för alla om mig, för ni har varit med mig från början.

The Vine and the Branches
15 “I am(A) the true vine, and My Father is the vineyard keeper. 2 Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit He removes,(B) and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit. 3 You are already clean(C) because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.(D)
5 “I am the vine;(E) you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit,(F) because you can do nothing without Me. 6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown aside(G) like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire,(H) and they are burned.(I) 7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.(J) 8 My Father is glorified(K) by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be[a] My disciples.
Christlike Love
9 “As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Remain in My love.(L) 10 If you keep My commands you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commands and remain in His love.(M)
11 “I have spoken these things to you so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.(N) 12 This is My command: Love one another as I have loved(O) you. 13 No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life(P) for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you slaves anymore, because a slave doesn’t know what his master[b](Q) is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from My Father. 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you.(R) I appointed you that you should go out and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask(S) the Father in My name,(T) He will give you.(U) 17 This is what I command you: Love one another.
Persecutions Predicted
18 “If the world hates(V) you, understand that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen(W) you out of it, the world hates you. 20 Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’(X) If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word,(Y) they will also keep yours. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of My name,(Z) because they don’t know(AA) the One who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin.[c](AB) Now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates Me also hates My Father.(AC) 24 If I had not done the works(AD) among them that no one else has done,(AE) they would not have sin.(AF) Now they have seen and hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened so that the statement written in their scripture might be fulfilled:(AG) They hated Me for no reason.(AH)[d]
Coming Testimony and Rejection
26 “When the Counselor(AI) comes, the One I will send to you from the Father(AJ)—the Spirit of truth(AK) who proceeds from the Father—He will testify about Me. 27 You also will testify,(AL) because you have been with Me from the beginning.

The Vine and the Branches
15 “I am(A) the true vine,(B) and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(C) while every branch that does bear fruit(D) he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(E) 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(F) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(G) apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(H) 7 If you remain in me(I) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(J) 8 This is to my Father’s glory,(K) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(L)

The World Hates the Disciples
18 “If the world hates you,(Y) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(Z) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(AA) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[b](AB) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(AC) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(AD) for they do not know the one who sent me.(AE) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(AF) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(AG) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(AH) they would not be guilty of sin.(AI) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(AJ) ‘They hated me without reason.’[c](AK)
The Work of the Holy Spirit
26 “When the Advocate(AL) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(AM)—the Spirit of truth(AN) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(AO) 27 And you also must testify,(AP) for you have been with me from the beginning.(AQ)
