Lasaros uppväcks från de döda
11 En man som hette Lasaros låg sjuk. Han bodde i byn Betania tillsammans med sina systrar Maria och Marta 2 (Det var samma Maria, vars bror Lasaros nu låg sjuk, som smorde Herren med välluktande olja och torkade hans fötter med sitt hår). 3 De två systrarna skickade nu ett meddelande till Jesus: ”Herre, din vän är sjuk.”
4 Men när Jesus hörde det sa han: ”Hans sjukdom ska inte sluta med döden utan visar Guds härlighet, så att Guds Son blir förhärligad genom detta.” 5 Jesus älskade Marta, hennes syster och Lasaros. 6 När han hörde att Lasaros var sjuk, stannade han kvar där han var i ytterligare två dagar. 7 Sedan sa han till lärjungarna: ”Låt oss gå tillbaka till Judeen.”
8 Men hans lärjungar sa till honom: ”Rabbi, judarna försökte just stena dig. Ska du verkligen gå dit igen?”
9 Då svarade Jesus: ”Har inte dagen tolv timmar? Om man går under dagen snubblar man inte, för då ser man denna världens ljus. 10 Men om man går om natten, då snubblar man, eftersom man inte har ljus.” 11 Sedan sa han: ”Vår vän Lasaros sover, men nu ska jag gå och väcka honom.”
12 Hans lärjungar sa: ”Herre, om han sover så blir han snart frisk.” 13 Jesus menade att Lasaros hade dött, men de trodde att han talade om vanlig sömn. 14 Därför sa Jesus rent ut till dem: ”Lasaros är död. 15 Och för er skull är jag glad att jag inte var där, för att ni ska tro. Men nu måste vi gå till honom.” 16 Tomas, som kallades Tvillingen, sa då till de andra lärjungarna: ”Kom, låt oss gå med, så att vi kan dö tillsammans med honom.”
17 När Jesus kom fram till Betania fann han att Lasaros redan hade legat i graven i fyra dagar. 18 Betania låg bara ungefär tre kilometer från Jerusalem, 19 och många judar hade kommit därifrån för att trösta Marta och Maria i deras sorg över deras bror. 20 Men när Marta nu hörde att Jesus var på väg gick hon ut för att möta honom, medan Maria stannade hemma.
21 Marta sa till Jesus: ”Herre, om du hade varit här, så hade min bror inte dött. 22 Men jag vet ändå att Gud ska ge dig vad du än ber honom om.”
23 Jesus svarade: ”Din bror ska uppstå.”
24 Då sa Marta: ”Ja, jag vet att han ska uppstå vid uppståndelsen på den sista dagen.”
25 Men Jesus sa till henne: ”Jag är uppståndelsen och livet. Den som tror på mig ska leva, även om han dör. 26 Och var och en som lever och tror på mig ska aldrig i evighet dö. Tror du det?”
27 ”Ja, Herre”, svarade hon. ”Jag tror att du är Messias, Guds Son, som skulle komma hit till världen.”
28 Efter att ha sagt detta gick hon därifrån, kallade på sin syster Maria och viskade till henne: ”Mästaren är här och vill träffa dig.” 29 När Maria hörde det, reste hon sig genast upp och gick ut för att möta honom.
30 Jesus hade stannat utanför byn på den plats där Marta hade mött honom. 31 Så när judarna, som var i huset för att trösta Maria, såg henne skynda sig ut trodde de att hon skulle gå till graven för att gråta, och de följde efter henne. 32 När Maria kom fram till Jesus och såg honom, föll hon ner vid hans fötter och sa: ”Herre, om du hade varit här, så hade min bror inte dött.” 33 När Jesus såg hur hon grät och hur judarna som följt med henne också grät, blev han djupt upprörd och skakad, 34 och han frågade: ”Var har ni lagt honom?”
De sa: ”Kom och se, Herre!” 35 Jesus grät.
36 Då sa de som stod runt omkring: ”Se hur mycket han älskade honom.”
37 Men några av dem sa: ”Om han kunde bota en blind, då kunde han väl ha hindrat dennes död?” 38 Än en gång blev Jesus upprörd, och han gick till graven, som var en grotta med en sten framför öppningen.
39 Jesus sa nu: ”Ta bort stenen.” Men Marta, den döda mannens syster, sa: ”Herre, han luktar ju redan, för han har varit död i fyra dagar.”
40 Då sa Jesus till henne: ”Sade jag dig inte att om du tror, så ska du få se Guds härlighet?” 41 Då tog de bort stenen. Sedan såg Jesus upp mot himlen och sa: ”Fader, jag tackar dig för att du har hört mig. 42 Själv visste jag att du alltid hör mig, men för alla de människors skull som står här säger jag det ändå, så att de ska tro att du har sänt mig.” 43 Sedan ropade han med hög röst: ”Lasaros, kom ut!” 44 Och den döde kom ut med både armar och ben inlindade i liksvepningen och med ansiktet täckt av en duk. Jesus sa då till dem: ”Gör honom fri och låt honom gå.”
Det judiska rådet planerar att döda Jesus
45 Många av judarna som kommit ut till Maria och sett vad Jesus gjorde, började nu tro på honom. 46 Men några av dem gick bort till fariseerna och rapporterade vad Jesus hade gjort.
47 Då kallade översteprästerna och fariseerna samman hela det judiska rådet. De sa: ”Vad ska vi göra? Den här mannen gör ju många tecken. 48 Om vi låter honom fortsätta börjar snart hela folket att tro på honom, och då kommer romarna att förstöra vårt tempel och vårt folk.”
49 En av dem, Kajafas, som var överstepräst det året, sa då till dem: ”Nu förstår ni nog ingenting! 50 Ni bör ju inse att det är bättre för er om en enda människa dör än att hela folket går under.”
51 Detta sa han inte av sig själv. Nej, eftersom han var överstepräst det året talade han profetiskt att Jesus skulle dö för folket, 52 och inte bara för dem, utan också för alla kringspridda Guds barn, för att samla och förena dem. 53 Från den stunden var de fast beslutna att döda Jesus.
54 Jesus vandrade därför inte längre öppet omkring bland judarna utan drog sig bort till utkanten av öknen, till Efraim, där han stannade med sina lärjungar.
55 Den judiska påskhögtiden närmade sig nu, och många från landet kom till Jerusalem i förväg för att gå igenom reningsceremonierna före påsken. 56 De sökte efter Jesus, och medan de stod i templet frågade de varandra: ”Vad tror ni? Har han inte tänkt komma till högtiden?” 57 Men översteprästerna och fariseerna hade befallt att den som visste var Jesus höll hus genast måste rapportera om detta, så att de kunde arrestera honom.

11 Isang tao nga na may-sakit, si Lazaro na taga (A)Betania, na nayon ni (B)Maria at ni Marta na kaniyang kapatid.
2 At ito'y yaong (C)si Maria na nagpahid sa Panginoon ng unguento, at kinuskos ang kaniyang mga paa ng kaniyang mga buhok, na ang kaniyang kapatid na si Lazaro ay may-sakit.
3 Nagpasugo nga sa kaniya ang mga kapatid na babae, na nagsasabi, Panginoon, narito, siya na iyong iniibig ay may-sakit.
4 Nguni't pagkarinig ni Jesus nito, ay sinabi niya, Ang sakit na ito'y hindi sa ikamamatay, (D)kundi sa ikaluluwalhati ng Dios, upang ang Anak ng Dios ay luwalhatiin sa pamamagitan niyaon.
5 Iniibig nga ni Jesus si Marta, at ang kaniyang kapatid na babae, at si Lazaro.
6 Nang mabalitaan nga niya na siya'y may-sakit, (E)siya'y tumahang dalawang araw nang panahong yaon sa dating kinaroroonan niya.

8 Sinabi sa kaniya ng mga alagad, Rabi, ngayo'y pinagsisikapang (F)batuhin ka ng mga Judio; at muli kang paroroon doon?
9 Sumagot si Jesus, Hindi baga ang araw ay may labingdalawang oras? (G)Kung ang isang tao'y lumalakad samantalang araw, ay hindi siya natitisod, sapagka't nakikita niya ang ilaw ng sanglibutang ito.
10 Nguni't (H)ang isang taong lumalakad samantalang gabi, ay natitisod siya, sapagka't walang ilaw sa kaniya.
11 Ang mga bagay na ito'y sinalita niya: at pagkatapos nito'y sinabi niya sa kanila, Si Lazaro na ating kaibigan ay (I)natutulog; nguni't ako'y paroroon, upang gisingin ko siya sa pagkakatulog.
12 Sinabi nga ng mga alagad sa kaniya, Panginoon, kung siya'y natutulog, ay siya'y gagaling.
13 Sinalita nga ni Jesus ang tungkol sa kaniyang pagkamatay: datapuwa't sinapantaha nila na ang sinalita ay ang karaniwang pagtulog.
14 Nang magkagayon nga ay sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus ng malinaw, Si Lazaro ay patay.
15 At ikinagagalak ko dahil sa inyo rin na ako'y wala roon, upang kayo'y magsipaniwala; gayon ma'y tayo na sa kaniya.
16 Si (J)Tomas nga, na tinatawag na Didimo, ay nagsabi sa mga kapuwa niya alagad, Tayo'y magsiparoon din naman, upang tayo'y mangamatay na kasama niya.
17 Kaya't nang dumating si Jesus, ay naratnan niyang (K)apat na araw na siya'y nalilibing.
18 Ang Betania nga'y malapit sa Jerusalem, na may layong labing-limang estadio;
19 At marami sa mga Judio ang nangakaparoon na kay Marta at kay Maria, upang sila'y aliwin tungkol sa kanilang kapatid.
20 Si Marta nga, nang marinig niyang si Jesus ay dumarating, ay yumaon at sumalubong sa kaniya: nguni't si Maria ay nanatiling nakaupo sa bahay.
21 Sinabi nga ni Marta kay Jesus, Panginoon, kung ikaw sana'y narito, disin ang kapatid ko ay hindi namatay.
22 At ngayon man nama'y nalalaman ko na, anomang hingin mo sa Dios, ay ipagkakaloob sa iyo ng Dios.
23 Sinabi sa kaniya ni Jesus, Magbabangon uli ang iyong kapatid.
24 Si Marta ay nagsabi sa kaniya, Nalalaman ko na siya'y magbabangon uli sa (L)pagkabuhay na maguli sa huling araw.
25 Sinabi sa kaniya ni Jesus, Ako (M)ang pagkabuhay na maguli, (N)at ang kabuhayan: ang sumasampalataya sa akin, bagama't siya'y mamatay, gayon ma'y mabubuhay siya;
26 At ang sinomang nabubuhay at sumasampalataya sa akin ay (O)hindi mamamatay magpakailan man. Sinasampalatayanan mo baga ito?
27 Sinabi niya sa kaniya, Oo, Panginoon: (P)sumasampalataya ako na ikaw ang Cristo ang Anak ng Dios, sa makatuwid baga'y ang naparirito sa sanglibutan.
28 At nang masabi na niya ito, ay yumaon siya, at tinawag ng lihim si Maria na kapatid niya, na sinasabi, Ang Guro ay narito, at tinatawag ka.
29 At siya, nang marinig niya ito, ay nagtindig na madali, at pumaroon sa kaniya.
30 (Hindi pa nga dumarating si Jesus sa nayon, kundi naroroon pa sa dakong kinasalubungan sa kaniya ni Marta.)
31 Ang mga Judio nga na kaniyang mga kasama sa bahay, at nangagsisialiw sa kaniya, pagkakita nilang si Maria, na siya'y nagtindig na madali at lumabas, ay nagsisunod sa kaniya, na inaakalang paroroon siya sa libingan upang doo'y tumangis.
32 Si Maria nga, pagdating niya sa kinaroroonan ni Jesus, at pagkakita sa kaniya, ay nagpatirapa sa kaniyang paanan, na sinabi sa kaniya, Panginoon, kung ikaw sana'y narito, disin ay hindi namatay ang aking kapatid.
33 Nang makita nga ni Jesus na siya'y tumatangis, at gayon din ang mga Judiong nagsisitangis na kasama niyang dumating, ay nalagim siya sa espiritu, at nagulumihanan,
34 At sinabi, Saan ninyo siya inilagay? Sinabi nila sa kaniya, Panginoon, halika at tingnan mo.
35 Tumangis si Jesus.
36 Sinabi nga ng mga Judio, Tingnan ninyo kung gaano ang pagibig niya sa kaniya!
37 Datapuwa't ang ilan sa kanila'y nagsipagsabi, Hindi baga magagawa ng taong ito, na (Q)nagpadilat ng mga mata ng bulag, na ang taong ito naman ay huwag mamatay?
38 Si Jesus nga sa muling pagkalagim sa kaniyang sarili ay naparoon sa libingan. Yaon nga'y isang yungib, at (R)mayroong isang batong nakatakip sa ibabaw noon.
39 Sinabi ni Jesus, Alisin ninyo ang bato. Si Marta, na kapatid niyaong namatay, ay nagsabi sa kaniya, Panginoon, sa ngayon ay nabubulok na ang bangkay sapagka't may apat na araw nang siya'y namamatay.
40 Sinabi sa kaniya ni Jesus, (S)Di baga sinabi ko sa iyo, na, kung ikaw ay sasampalataya, ay makikita mo (T)ang kaluwalhatian ng Dios?
41 Kaya't inalis nila ang bato. At itiningin ni Jesus sa itaas ang kaniyang mga mata, at sinabi, Ama, nagpapasalamat ako sa iyo, na ako'y iyong dininig.
42 At nalalaman ko na ako'y lagi mong (U)dinirinig: nguni't ito'y sinabi ko dahil sa karamihang nasa palibot, upang sila'y magsisampalataya na ikaw ang nagsugo sa akin.
43 At nang masabi niya ang gayon, ay sumigaw siya ng malakas na tinig, Lazaro, lumabas ka.
44 Siya na patay ay lumabas, (V)na natatalian ang mga kamay at mga paa ng mga kayong panglibing; at ang kaniyang mukha ay nababalot ng isang panyo. Sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus, Siya'y inyong kalagan, at bayaan ninyo siyang yumaon.
45 Marami nga sa mga Judio ang nagsiparoon kay Maria (W)at nangakakita ng ginawa niya, ay nagsisampalataya sa kaniya.
46 Datapuwa't ang ilan sa kanila ay nagsiparoon sa (X)mga Fariseo, at sinaysay sa kanila ang mga bagay na ginawa ni Jesus.
47 Ang mga pangulong saserdote nga (Y)at ang mga Fariseo ay nangagpulong, at nagsipagsabi, Ano ang ginagawa natin? sapagka't ang taong ito'y gumagawa ng maraming tanda.
48 Kung siya'y ating pabayaang gayon, ang lahat ng mga tao ay magsisisampalataya sa kaniya: at magsisiparito ang mga Romano at pagkukunin ang ating kinaroroonan at gayon din naman ang ating bansa.
49 Nguni't ang isa sa kanila na (Z)si Caifas, na dakilang saserdote nang taong (AA)yaon, ay nagsabi sa kanila, Kayo'y walang nalalamang anoman.
50 Ni inyong niwawari na sa inyo'y nararapat na ang isang tao ay mamatay dahil sa bayan, at hindi ang buong bansa ay mapahamak.
51 Ito nga'y sinabi niya na hindi sa kaniyang sarili: kundi palibhasa ay dakilang saserdote nang taong yaon, ay hinulaan niya na si Jesus ay dapat mamatay dahil sa bansa;
52 At (AB)hindi dahil sa bansa lamang, (AC)kundi upang matipon din naman niya sa isa ang mga anak ng Dios na nagsisipangalat.
53 Kaya't mula nang araw na yaon ay pinagsanggunianan nilang ipapatay siya.
54 Si Jesus ay hindi (AD)na naglalakad ng hayag sa gitna ng mga Judio, kundi naparoon doon sa lupaing malapit sa ilang, sa isang bayan na tinatawag na Efraim; at siya'y nanahanan doong kasama ng mga alagad.
55 Ang paskua nga ng mga Judio (AE)ay malapit na: at maraming nagsiahon sa Jerusalem mula sa lupaing yaon bago magpaskua, (AF)upang magsipaglinis.
56 Pinaghahanap nga nila si Jesus, at pinaguusapan ng isa't isa, samantalang nangakatayo sila sa templo, Anong akala ninyo? Na hindi na kaya siya paririto sa pista?
57 Ang mga pangulong saserdote at ang mga Fariseo nga ay nangagutos, na, kung ang sinomang tao'y nakakaalam ng kung saan siya naroroon, ay dapat niyang ihayag, upang kanilang madakip siya.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 Jesus wept.
36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
