Lazarus wordt ziek en sterft
11 In Betanië woonde een man die Lazarus heette. Hij woonde daar met zijn zussen Maria en Marta. Lazarus was ziek. 2 (Maria was de vrouw die later Jezus' voeten met parfum zalfde en met haar haren afdroogde.) 3 De zussen lieten Jezus waarschuwen: "Heer, uw vriend Lazarus is ziek." 4 Toen Jezus dat hoorde, zei Hij: "Deze ziekte zal niet dodelijk aflopen. Maar door deze ziekte zal straks te zien zijn hoe goed en machtig God is. De Zoon van God zal hierdoor laten zien hoe machtig Hij is."
5 Jezus hield veel van Marta, Maria en Lazarus. 6 Toen Hij gehoord had dat Lazarus ziek was, bleef Hij eerst nog twee dagen in de plaats waar Hij op dat moment was. 7 Daarna zei Hij tegen zijn leerlingen: "We gaan weer naar Judea." 8 De leerlingen zeiden tegen Hem: "Meester, laatst probeerden de Joodse leiders U daar te doden. En nu wilt U daar weer heen gaan?" 9 Jezus antwoordde: "Een dag duurt toch twaalf uur? Als je overdag loopt, kun je zien waar je loopt. Je struikelt niet, doordat je in het daglicht loopt. 10 Maar als je 's nachts loopt, struikel je, omdat je zelf geen licht in je hebt." 11 Daarna zei Hij: "Onze vriend Lazarus slaapt. Maar Ik ga naar hem toe om hem weer wakker te maken." 12 De leerlingen antwoordden Hem: "Heer, als hij slaapt, wordt hij weer beter." 13 Maar Jezus bedoelde dat hij gestorven was. Maar zijn leerlingen dachten dat Jezus bedoelde dat Lazarus gewoon sliep. 14 Toen zei Jezus het duidelijk tegen hen: "Lazarus is gestorven. 15 En Ik ben blij voor jullie dat Ik daar niet was. Want nu zullen jullie werkelijk in Mij geloven. Kom, we gaan naar hem toe." 16 Tomas, die ook wel Didymus (= 'tweeling') werd genoemd, zei tegen de andere leerlingen: "Kom, we gaan met Hem mee om samen met Hem te worden gedood."
Jezus maakt Lazarus weer levend
17 Toen Jezus aankwam, hoorde Hij dat Lazarus al vier dagen in het graf lag. 18 Betanië lag vlak bij Jeruzalem, ongeveer 15 stadiën (ongeveer 4 km) daar vandaan. 19 Er waren veel Joden gekomen om Maria en Marta te troosten over de dood van hun broer. 20 Toen Marta hoorde dat Jezus eraan kwam, ging ze naar Hem toe. Maar Maria bleef thuis zitten. 21 Marta zei tegen Jezus: "Heer, als U hier was geweest, zou mijn broer niet gestorven zijn! 22 Maar ik weet zeker dat God U ook nu alles zal geven wat U van Hem vraagt." 23 Jezus zei tegen haar: "Je broer zal opstaan uit de dood." 24 Marta antwoordde: "Ik weet dat hij zal opstaan uit de dood, op de laatste dag, als alle doden weer opstaan." 25 Jezus zei tegen haar: "IK BEN[a] de opstanding en het leven. Iedereen die in Mij gelooft, zal leven, zelfs als hij al gestorven is. 26 En iedereen die leeft en in Mij gelooft, zal nooit meer sterven. Geloof je dat?" 27 Ze zei tegen Hem: "Ja Heer, ik geloof dat U de Messias bent, de Zoon van God die op aarde zou komen."
28 Hierna ging Marta weer naar huis. Ze nam haar zus Maria even apart en zei: "De Meester is er en Hij wil je spreken." 29 Toen ze dat hoorde, stond ze snel op en ging naar Hem toe. 30 Jezus was nog niet in het dorp aangekomen. Hij was nog op de plek waar Hij met Marta had gesproken. 31 De Joden die bij Maria in huis zaten om haar te troosten, zagen dat Maria snel opstond en naar buiten ging. Ze liepen haar achterna, omdat ze dachten dat ze naar het graf ging om daar te huilen. 32 Toen Maria bij Jezus kwam, knielde ze bij zijn voeten neer. En ze zei tegen Hem: "Heer, als U hier was geweest, zou mijn broer niet gestorven zijn!"
33 Toen Jezus haar en de Joden die bij haar waren zo zag huilen, werd Hij in zijn geest boos en verdrietig. 34 Hij vroeg: "Waar hebben jullie hem begraven?" Ze zeiden tegen Hem: "Heer, komt U maar kijken." 35 Jezus huilde. 36 De Joden zeiden: "Kijk eens hoeveel Hij van hem hield!" 37 Maar sommige mensen zeiden: "De ogen van een blinde kon Hij wél genezen. Had Hij er dan óók niet voor kunnen zorgen dat Lazarus in leven bleef?" 38 Jezus werd opnieuw boos en verdrietig in zijn geest en ging naar het graf. Het graf was een grot in de rotsen met een grote steen voor de ingang. 39 Jezus zei: "Haal de steen weg!" Marta, de zus van de dode, zei tegen Hem: "Heer, het stinkt er al, want hij is al vier dagen dood!" 40 Jezus zei tegen haar: "Ik heb je toch gezegd dat je, als je Mij gelooft, zal zien hoe goed en machtig God is?" 41 Toen haalden ze de steen weg. Jezus keek omhoog naar de hemel en zei: "Vader, dank U wel dat U naar Mij heeft geluisterd. 42 Ik weet Zelf wel dat U altijd naar Mij luistert. Maar Ik zeg dit zodat de mensen die om Mij heen staan, zullen geloven dat U Mij heeft gestuurd." 43 Nadat Hij dit had gezegd, riep Hij luid: "Lazarus, kom naar buiten!" 44 En de dode kwam naar buiten. Zijn armen en benen waren nog omwikkeld met grafdoeken en er zat een doek om zijn gezicht. Jezus zei tegen hen: "Maak de doeken los en laat Lazarus naar huis gaan."
De Joodse leiders besluiten Jezus te doden
45 De Joden die daar waren, zagen wat Jezus had gedaan. Veel van hen geloofden toen in Hem. 46 Maar anderen gingen naar de Farizeeërs en vertelden hun wat Jezus had gedaan. 47 De leiders van de priesters en de Farizeeërs gingen haastig vergaderen. Ze zeiden: "Wat moeten we doen? Want die Man doet heel veel wonderen. 48 Als we Hem zijn gang laten gaan, zullen alle mensen in Hem gaan geloven. Dan zullen de Romeinen komen[b] en ons onze macht en ons volk afnemen." 49 Kajafas, die dat jaar de hogepriester was, zei: "Jullie begrijpen helemaal niet wat er aan de hand is. 50 Begrijp dan toch dat het voor ons het beste is om één man te doden, zodat het niet met het hele volk slecht afloopt." 51 Hij zei dit niet uit zichzelf. Maar omdat hij dat jaar de hogepriester was, liet God hem profeteren dat Jezus voor het volk zou sterven. 52 En niet alleen voor dát volk, maar ook om de kinderen van God die over de wereld verspreid zijn, bij elkaar te brengen.
53 Vanaf die dag overlegden ze met elkaar hoe ze Jezus konden doden. 54 Daarom ging Jezus niet meer zomaar overal met de mensen om. Hij vertrok naar het gebied dat vlak bij de woestijn ligt. Hij ging naar de stad Efraïm en bleef daar met zijn leerlingen.
55 Het was bijna de tijd van het Paasfeest. Uit het hele land reisden de mensen naar Jeruzalem, nog vóór het Paasfeest. Want eerst moesten ze zich nog volgens de regels van hun wet voorbereiden op het feest. 56 Ze zochten naar Jezus en praatten in de tempel met elkaar over Hem: "Wat denken jullie? Zou Hij wel op het feest komen?" 57 De leiders van de priesters en de Farizeeërs hadden bevolen dat mensen die wisten waar Jezus was, het moesten komen zeggen. Dan zouden ze Hem gevangen nemen.

- Johannes 11:25 Jezus gebruikt hier de woorden IK BEN. In het Grieks staat daar 'ego eimi,' wat veel nadrukkelijker is dan de gewone manier om 'ik ben...' te zeggen. In het Oude Testament maakt God Zich met de naam IK BEN aan Mozes bekend. Lees Exodus 3:14. Door deze naam te gebruiken geeft Jezus dus aan dat Hijzelf God is. Vergelijk met Matteüs 14:27.
- Johannes 11:48 Israël was in die tijd door de Romeinen veroverd en een soort provincie van het Romeinse Rijk geworden. Waarschijnlijk waren ze bang dat het volk Jezus tot koning zou kronen. De Romeinse keizer zou die opstand met geweld de kop indrukken. De Farizeeërs hadden in die tijd veel macht. Maar daar zou de keizer een eind aan maken als er een opstand kwam.

Jezus en Lazarus
11 Lazarus uit Bethanië, de broer van Maria en Martha, was ziek. 2 Maria was de vrouw die kostbare parfumolie over de voeten van Jezus uitgegoten en met haar haren afgedroogd had. 3 De twee zusters stuurden iemand naar Jezus met de boodschap: ‘Here, uw vriend Lazarus is ziek.’ 4 Toen Jezus dit hoorde, zei Hij: ‘Hij zal niet sterven. Deze ziekte is tot eer van God. Hierdoor zal de Zoon zijn grootheid en macht bewijzen.’
5 Jezus hield veel van Martha, Maria en Lazarus. 6 Toch maakte Hij geen aanstalten naar hen toe te gaan. 7 Pas twee dagen later zei Hij tegen zijn leerlingen: ‘Kom, wij gaan terug naar Judea.’ 8 De leerlingen protesteerden: ‘Kort geleden probeerden de Joden daar U te stenigen, Meester. En nu wilt U er weer naar toe?’ 9 Jezus antwoordde: ‘Een dag heeft toch twaalf uur. Als u overdag loopt, struikelt u niet, omdat het overal licht is. 10 Maar wie ʼs nachts loopt, struikelt omdat het donker is.’ 11 Even later zei Hij: ‘Onze vriend Lazarus is ingeslapen, maar Ik ga hem wakker maken.’ 12 ‘De slaap zal hem goed doen, dan wordt hij vlug beter,’ zeiden de leerlingen. 13 Zij dachten dat Jezus had gezegd dat Lazarus lag te slapen. Maar Jezus bedoelde dat hij gestorven was. 14 Daarom zei Hij ronduit: ‘Lazarus is gestorven. 15 Ik ben blij voor jullie dat Ik er niet bij was, want nu zal jullie vertrouwen in Mij sterker worden. Kom, we gaan naar hem toe.’ 16 Thomas, die ook wel Didymus werd genoemd, zei tegen de andere leerlingen: ‘Laten we meegaan om samen met Hem te sterven.’
17 Toen Jezus in Bethanië aankwam, bleek Lazarus al vier dagen daarvoor begraven te zijn. 18 Bethanië ligt op nog geen drie kilometer van Jeruzalem. 19 Er waren verscheidene Joden gekomen om Martha en Maria te troosten over het verlies van hun broer. 20 Zodra Martha hoorde dat Jezus er aankwam, ging zij Hem tegemoet. Maar Maria bleef thuis. 21 ‘Here,’ zei Martha tegen Jezus, ‘als U hier geweest was, zou mijn broer niet gestorven zijn. 22 Maar ik ben er zeker van dat God U ook nu zal geven wat U Hem vraagt.’ 23 ‘Je broer wordt weer levend, Martha,’ zei Jezus. 24 ‘Ja, dat weet ik,’ antwoordde zij. ‘Hij zal weer levend worden als hij op de laatste dag uit de dood terugkomt.’ 25 ‘Ik geef de doden het leven terug,’ zei Jezus tegen haar. ‘Ik ben Zelf het leven. Wie in Mij gelooft, zal leven, zelfs als hij gestorven is. 26 Wie leeft en in Mij gelooft, zal nooit sterven. Geloof je dat?’ 27 ‘Ja, Here,’ antwoordde zij. ‘Ik geloof dat U de Christus bent, de Zoon van God, die in de wereld komen zou.’
28 Hierna ging zij weg om haar zuster te halen. ‘Maria,’ zei zij zacht, ‘de Meester is er en Hij wil je spreken.’ 29 Maria stond onmiddellijk op en ging naar Jezus toe. 30 Jezus was nog niet in het dorp aangekomen. Hij was op de plaats gebleven waar Martha Hem had ontmoet. 31 De Joden die bij Maria waren om haar te troosten, zagen hoe zij vlug opstond en naar buiten liep. Zij volgden haar omdat zij dachten dat zij naar het graf ging om er te huilen. 32 Toen Maria bij Jezus kwam, viel zij voor Hem op de knieën en zei: ‘Here, als U hier geweest was, zou mijn broer niet gestorven zijn!’
33 Toen Jezus haar en de Joden die met haar waren meegekomen, zag huilen, greep het verdriet Hem aan. 34 ‘Waar hebben jullie hem neergelegd?’ vroeg Hij ontroerd. ‘Wij zullen het U wijzen, Here,’ antwoordden zij. 35 Jezus huilde. 36 De Joden zeiden tegen elkaar: ‘Je kunt wel zien dat Hij veel van Lazarus hield.’ 37 Maar enkelen van hen merkten op: ‘Hij had er toch wel voor kunnen zorgen dat Lazarus niet gestorven was! Hij heeft toch ook iemand van blindheid genezen?’ 38 Dit ergerde Jezus en Hij ging naar het graf, een grot met een zware steen voor de opening. 39 ‘Haal die steen weg,’ zei Hij. ‘Maar, Here,’ protesteerde Martha, ‘er hangt al een lijklucht. Hij ligt er al vier dagen!’ 40 ‘Ik heb toch gezegd dat je, als je op Mij vertrouwt, de macht en grootheid van God zult zien?’ antwoordde Jezus.
41 Zij haalden de steen weg. Jezus keek omhoog en zei: ‘Vader, dank U wel dat U mijn gebed verhoort. 42 Ik weet dat U Mij altijd hoort, maar Ik wil graag dat de mensen hier zullen geloven dat U Mij gestuurd hebt. Daarom zeg Ik dit.’ 43 Nadat Hij dit tegen zijn Vader gezegd had, riep Hij met krachtige stem: ‘Lazarus! Kom naar buiten!’ 44 De dode kwam uit het graf. Zijn handen en voeten waren met linnen windsels omwikkeld en er was een doek over zijn gezicht gebonden. ‘Haal die doek en die windsels eraf,’ zei Jezus, ‘en laat hem naar huis gaan.’
45 Nu zij dit hadden gezien, geloofden veel Joden dat Jezus de Christus was. 46 Maar sommigen gingen naar de Farizeeën om te vertellen wat Jezus had gedaan. 47 Daarop belegden de leidende priesters en de Farizeeën een spoedvergadering. ‘Wat kunnen wij doen?’ vroegen zij. ‘Die man doet het ene wonder na het andere. 48 Als wij Hem zijn gang laten gaan, gaat iedereen in Hem geloven. Als de Romeinen moeten ingrijpen, zal het met onze invloed gedaan zijn. Dan hebben we niets meer over de heilige stad en dit volk te zeggen.’ 49 Kajafas, die dat jaar hogepriester was, zei: ‘U hebt geen flauw idee wat hier aan de hand is. 50 Begrijpt u niet dat het in uw voordeel is als één mens sterft voor het hele volk? Anders gaat het hele volk verloren.’ 51 Dat zei hij niet uit zichzelf. Als hogepriester van dat jaar werd dit hem door God ingegeven. Hij voorspelde daarmee dat Jezus voor het Joodse volk zou sterven, 52 en niet alleen voor dat volk, maar ook voor de kinderen van God die over de wereld verspreid zijn. Jezus zou hen allemaal bijeenbrengen.
53 Vanaf die dag zochten de Joodse leiders naar een gelegenheid om Hem te doden. 54 Daarom bewoog Jezus Zich niet langer vrij onder de mensen, maar ging naar Efraïm, een rustig plaatsje aan de rand van de woestijn. Daar bleef Hij enige tijd met zijn leerlingen.
55 Het was vlak voor het Joodse Paasfeest. Jeruzalem stroomde vol met mensen uit het hele land die zich volgens de voorschriften eerst wilden reinigen. 56 Zij keken rond of Jezus er ook was. ‘Wat denk je?’ vroegen ze, terwijl zij met elkaar in de tempel stonden te praten. ‘Zou Hij ook komen?’ 57 De leidende priesters en de Farizeeën hadden laten bekendmaken dat ieder die wist waar Jezus Zich ophield, dat onmiddellijk moest melden. Dan zou Hij gevangengenomen worden.

拉撒路死了
11 有一個患病的人，名叫拉撒路，住在伯大尼，就是馬利亞和她姊姊馬大的村莊。 2 這馬利亞就是後來用香膏抹主，並且用頭髮把主的腳擦乾的那人；患病的拉撒路是她的兄弟。 3 姊妹二人派人到耶穌那裡去，說：“主啊，你所愛的人病了。” 4 耶穌聽見，就說：“這病不至於死，而是為了 神的榮耀，使 神的兒子因此得到榮耀。” 5 耶穌向來愛馬大和她的妹妹馬利亞，以及拉撒路。 6 他聽說拉撒路病了，仍然在原來的地方住了兩天， 7 然後對門徒說：“我們再到猶太去吧。” 8 門徒對他說：“拉比，近來猶太人要拿石頭打你，你還到那裡去嗎？” 9 耶穌說：“白晝不是有十二小時嗎？人若在白晝行走，就不會跌倒，因為他看見這世上的光； 10 人若在夜間行走，就會跌倒，因為他沒有光。” 11 耶穌說完了這些話，跟著又對他們說：“我們的朋友拉撒路睡了，我要去喚醒他。” 12 門徒說：“主啊，如果他睡了，就會好過來的。” 13 其實耶穌是指著拉撒路的死說的，門徒卻以為他是指正常的睡眠說的。 14 於是，耶穌公開地告訴他們：“拉撒路死了。 15 我為你們歡喜，因為我不在那裡，是要使你們相信。現在我們到他那裡去吧。” 16 那稱為“雙生子”（“雙生子”原文作“低土馬”）的多馬，對其他的門徒說：“我們也去跟他一同死吧！”
耶穌是復活是生命
17 耶穌到了，知道拉撒路在墳墓裡已經四天了。 18 伯大尼靠近耶路撒冷，相距約有三公里。 19 有許多猶太人來到馬大和馬利亞那裡，為了拉撒路的死來安慰她們。 20 馬大聽見耶穌來了，就去迎接他，馬利亞卻仍然坐在家裡。 21 馬大對耶穌說：“主啊，如果你早在這裡，我的兄弟就不會死了！ 22 就是現在，我也知道無論你向 神求甚麼， 神必賜給你。” 23 耶穌對她說：“你的兄弟必會復活。” 24 馬大說：“我知道在末日復活的時候，他必會復活。” 25 耶穌說：“我就是復活和生命；信我的人，雖然死了，也要活著。 26 所有活著又信我的人，必定永遠不死，你信這話嗎？” 27 她說：“主啊，我信；我已經信了，你是基督，是 神的兒子，是那要到世上來的。”

28 馬大說了這些話，就回去叫她妹妹馬利亞，暗暗地說：“老師來了，他叫你。” 29 馬利亞一聽見，就急忙起來，到耶穌那裡去。 30 那時，耶穌還沒有進入村子，仍然在馬大迎接他的地方。 31 那些在房子裡和馬利亞在一起安慰她的猶太人，見她匆忙地起來出去，就跟著她，以為她要到墳墓那裡去哭。 32 馬利亞來到耶穌那裡，一看見他，就俯伏在他腳前，說：“主啊，如果你早在這裡，我的兄弟就不會死了！” 33 耶穌看見她在哭，和她一同來的猶太人也在哭，就心裡激動，難過起來， 34 說：“你們把他安放在哪裡？”他們說：“主啊，請來看。” 35 耶穌哭了。 36 於是猶太人說：“你看，他多麼愛這個人！” 37 他們中間有人說：“他既然開了瞎子的眼睛，難道不能使這個人不死嗎？”
38 耶穌又再心裡激動，來到墳墓前面。那墳墓是一個洞穴，洞口有塊石頭堵住。 39 耶穌說：“把這塊石頭挪開！”死者的姊姊馬大對他說：“主啊，已經四天了，他必定臭了。” 40 耶穌說：“我不是對你說過‘如果你信，就必定看見 神的榮耀’嗎？” 41 於是他們把石頭挪開。耶穌舉目向天，說：“父啊，我感謝你，因為你垂聽了我， 42 我知道你常常聽我，但我說這話，是為了周圍站著的群眾，叫他們信是你差了我來。” 43 說了這話，就大聲呼喊：“拉撒路，出來！” 44 那死了的人就出來，他的手腳都纏著布，臉上裹著巾。耶穌說：“解開他，讓他走！”
祭司長等想殺害耶穌
45 有許多到馬利亞那裡去的猶太人，看見了耶穌所作的事，就信了他。 46 但他們中間有些人到法利賽人那裡去，把耶穌所作的事都告訴他們。 47 於是祭司長和法利賽人召開公議會，說：“這個人行了許多神蹟，我們怎麼辦呢？ 48 我們若讓他這樣，所有的人都會信他，羅馬人就會來，奪取我們的聖地，除滅我們的民族。” 49 他們當中有一位該亞法，是那年作大祭司的，對他們說：“你們甚麼都不知道， 50 也不去想想，一個人代替人民死，免得整個民族滅亡，這對你們是有益的。” 51 他說這話不是由於自己，而是因為他是那年的大祭司，所以預言耶穌要替猶太民族死； 52 不但替猶太民族死，也要把散居各地的 神的兒女招聚成為一體。 53 從那天起，他們就想殺害耶穌。
54 因此，耶穌不再在猶太人中間公開活動，卻離開那裡，到曠野附近的地方去；到了一座名叫以法蓮的城，就和門徒住在那裡。
55 猶太人的逾越節快到了，有許多人在過節前從各鄉上耶路撒冷去，要在那裡潔淨自己。 56 他們到處尋找耶穌，站在聖殿裡的時候，彼此說：“你們認為怎樣？他不會來過節吧？” 57 祭司長和法利賽人早已下了命令：如果有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就要前來報告，好去逮捕他。

The Raising of Lazarus
11 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. 2 This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair.[a] Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3 So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.”
4 But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” 5 So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, 6 he stayed where he was for the next two days. 7 Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”
8 But his disciples objected. “Rabbi,” they said, “only a few days ago the people[b] in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
9 Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world. 10 But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.” 11 Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”
12 The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!” 13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.
14 So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.”
16 Thomas, nicknamed the Twin,[c] said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too—and die with Jesus.”
17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18 Bethany was only a few miles[d] down the road from Jerusalem, 19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”
23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”
25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life.[e] Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” 28 Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him.
30 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him,[f] and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them.
They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”
38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. 39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them.
But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”
40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” 43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen. 46 But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council[g] together. “What are we going to do?” they asked each other. “This man certainly performs many miraculous signs. 48 If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple[h] and our nation.”
49 Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time,[i] said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about! 50 You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
51 He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation. 52 And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.
53 So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death. 54 As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.
55 It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began. 56 They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?” 57 Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.
