Liknelsen om fåren och den gode herden
10 Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: den som inte går in genom grinden till fårfållan utan istället tar sig in en annan väg, han är en tjuv och en brottsling. 2 Herden går in genom grinden. 3 Grindvakten öppnar grinden för honom, och fåren lyssnar till hans röst. Han kallar på sina får med deras namn och leder dem ut. 4 När han har släppt ut fåren går han framför dem, och de följer honom, för de känner igen hans röst. 5 De följer aldrig en främling, utan springer bort från honom, eftersom de inte känner igen hans röst.”
6 Jesus berättade den här bilden för dem, men de förstod inte vad han menade. 7 Jesus sa: ”Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: jag är grinden in till fåren. 8 Alla som har kommit före mig är tjuvar och brottslingar, men fåren lyssnade inte till dem. 9 Jag är grinden. Den som går in genom mig ska bli räddad. Han ska gå in och ut och hitta bete. 10 Tjuven kommer bara för att stjäla, slakta och döda. Men jag har kommit för att de ska ha liv, och liv i överflöd.
11 Jag är den gode herden. Den gode herden ger sitt liv för fåren. 12 Den som är anställd och inte är en herde och fårens ägare överger fåren och springer sin väg när han ser vargen komma. Och så angriper vargen fåren och skingrar flocken. 13 Den anställde har ingen omsorg om fåren.
14 Jag är den gode herden, och jag känner mina får, och de känner mig 15 på samma sätt som Fadern känner mig och jag känner honom. Jag ger mitt liv för fåren. 16 Jag har också andra får, som inte hör till den här fållan. Också dem måste jag leda, och de ska lyssna till min röst. Så ska det bli en fårhjord och en herde. 17 Fadern älskar mig, därför att jag ger mitt liv för att sedan ta det tillbaka. 18 Ingen tar mitt liv ifrån mig, utan jag ger det frivilligt. Jag har makt att ge det, och jag har makt att ta det tillbaka. Det är det bud jag har fått av min Fader.”
19 Dessa ord gav nytt upphov till oenighet bland judarna. 20 Många sa: ”Han är besatt av en ond ande och helt galen. Vad tjänar det till att lyssna på honom?” 21 Men andra sa: ”Nej, så talar inte den som är besatt av en ond ande. Kan en ond ande bota dem som är blinda?”
Judarna vägrar att tro på Jesus
22 Nu inföll tempelinvigningsfesten[a] i Jerusalem. Det var vinter, 23 och Jesus gick omkring i templet i Salomos pelarhall. 24 Då omringade judarna honom och frågade: ”Hur länge till ska du hålla oss i spänning? Om du är Messias, så säg det öppet.”
25 Jesus svarade dem: ”Jag har redan talat om det för er, men ni vill inte tro det. De gärningar jag gör i min Faders namn vittnar om mig. 26 Men ni tror inte, eftersom ni inte hör till mina får. 27 Mina får lyssnar till min röst, och jag känner dem, och de följer mig. 28 Jag ger dem evigt liv, och de ska aldrig i evighet gå förlorade. Ingen ska ta dem ifrån mig. 29 Min Fader har gett dem till mig, och han är större än någon annan. Därför kan ingen ta dem ifrån min Faders hand. 30 Jag och Fadern är ett.”
31 Då tog judarna än en gång upp stenar för att kasta på honom. 32 Men Jesus sa till dem: ”Jag har låtit er se många goda gärningar från Fadern. För vilken av dem tänker ni stena mig?”
33 Judarna svarade: ”Det är inte för någon god gärning vi vill stena dig, utan för att du hädar. Du, som är en människa, gör dig själv till Gud.”
34 Då sa Jesus: ”Står det inte i er egen lag att Gud sa: ’Jag säger att ni är gudar[b]’? 35 Man kallar alltså dem som fick ta emot Guds ord för gudar, och Skriften kan inte göras om intet. 36 Hur kan ni säga om honom som Fadern har helgat och sänt till världen att det är hädelse när jag säger: ’Jag är Guds Son’? 37 Om jag inte gör min Faders gärningar, då behöver ni inte tro på mig. 38 Men om jag gör dem, så tro åtminstone på dem, även om ni inte kan tro på mig. Då ska ni veta och inse att Fadern är i mig och jag i honom.”
39 De försökte då gripa honom igen, men han kom undan. 40 Sedan gick Jesus än en gång iväg till den plats på andra sidan Jordan där Johannes döparen först hade döpt, och han stannade där. 41 Det var många som kom till honom. Och de sa: ”Johannes gjorde inga tecken, men allt han sa om Jesus var sant.” 42 Många började där tro på honom.

- 10:22 Tempelinvigningsfesten firades till minnet av templets återinvigning under Judas Mackabaios i december 165 f.Kr. Jerusalems tempel hade invigts av Antiochos IV Epifanes 168 f.Kr. åt den grekiske högguden Zeus.
- 10:34 Det ord som både på grekiska och svenska är översatt med ”gudar” är det hebreiska elohim. Det kan betyda Gud, men också gudar, gudalik, ängel, ledare, Guds ägodel etc. Bland Israels folk kunde man förr i tiden kalla en kung eller en ledare för ”gud” eller ”Guds son”, eftersom han tjänade Gud. Se Ps 82:6.

Den gode herden
10 Amen, amen säger jag er: Den som inte går in i fårfållan genom dörren utan tar sig in på något annat ställe, han är en tjuv och en rövare. 2 Men den som går in genom dörren är fårens herde. 3 För honom öppnar dörrvaktaren, och fåren lyssnar till hans röst, och han kallar på sina får och nämner dem med deras namn och för ut dem. 4 När han har fört ut alla sina får, går han före dem, och fåren följer honom, därför att de känner igen hans röst. 5 Men en främling följer de inte, utan flyr bort från honom, därför att de inte känner igen främlingars röst." 6 Denna liknelse framställde Jesus för dem, men de förstod inte vad det var han talade om.
7 Då sade Jesus än en gång: "Amen, amen säger jag er: Jag är dörren till fåren. 8 Alla som har kommit före mig är tjuvar och rövare, men fåren har inte lyssnat till dem. 9 Jag är dörren. Den som går in genom mig skall bli frälst, och han skall gå in och gå ut och finna bete. 10 Tjuven kommer bara för att stjäla, slakta och döda. Jag har kommit för att de skall ha liv, ja, liv i överflöd.
11 Jag är den gode herden. Den gode herden ger sitt liv för fåren. 12 Den som är lejd och inte är en herde med egna får, han överger fåren och flyr, när han ser vargen komma. Och vargen river dem och skingrar hjorden. 13 Den som är lejd bryr sig inte om fåren. 14 Jag är den gode herden, och jag känner mina får, och mina får känner mig, 15 liksom Fadern känner mig och jag känner Fadern, och jag ger mitt liv för fåren. 16 Jag har också andra får, som inte hör till den här fållan.[a] Dem måste jag också leda, och de kommer att lyssna till min röst. Så skall det bli en hjord och en herde. 17 Fadern älskar mig därför att jag ger mitt liv för att sedan ta det tillbaka. 18 Ingen tar det ifrån mig, utan jag ger det av fri vilja. Jag har makt att ge det, och jag har makt att ta det tillbaka. Det budet har jag fått av min Fader."
19 För de ordens skull uppstod det på nytt delade meningar bland judarna. 20 Många av dem sade: "Han har en ond ande och är från sina sinnen. Varför hör ni på honom?" 21 Andra sade: "Sådana ord kommer inte från en som är besatt. Inte kan en ond ande öppna ögonen på blinda."
Jesu enhet med Fadern
22 Nu inföll tempelinvigningens högtid[b] i Jerusalem. Det var vinter, 23 och Jesus gick omkring i Salomos pelarhall i templet. 24 Då samlades judarna omkring honom och frågade: "Hur länge vill du hålla oss i ovisshet? Om du är Messias, så säg det öppet till oss!" 25 Jesus svarade: "Jag har sagt er det, och ni tror det inte. Gärningarna som jag gör i min Faders namn vittnar om mig. 26 Men ni tror inte, därför att ni inte hör till mina får. 27 Mina får lyssnar till min röst, och jag känner dem, och de följer mig. 28 Jag ger dem evigt liv, och de skall aldrig någonsin gå förlorade, och ingen skall rycka dem ur min hand. 29 Vad min Fader har gett mig är större än allt, och ingen kan rycka dem ur min Faders hand. 30 Jag och Fadern är ett."
31 Än en gång tog judarna upp stenar för att stena honom. 32 Jesus sade till dem: "Många goda gärningar från Fadern har jag låtit er se. För vilken av dem vill ni stena mig?" 33 Judarna svarade: "Det är inte för någon god gärning vi vill stena dig, utan därför att du hädar och gör dig själv till Gud, du som är en människa." 34 Jesus svarade dem: "Står det inte skrivet i er lag:[c] Jag har sagt att ni är gudar? 35 Om han nu kallar dem som fick Guds ord för gudar - och Skriften kan inte göras om intet - 36 hur kan ni då säga till honom, som Fadern har helgat och sänt till världen: Du hädar, därför att jag sade: Jag är Guds Son. 37 Om jag inte gör min Faders gärningar, så tro mig inte. 38 Men om jag gör dem, så tro på gärningarna, om ni inte kan tro på mig. Då skall ni inse och förstå att Fadern är i mig och jag i Fadern." 39 De försökte gripa honom igen, men han drog sig undan och gick bort från dem.
40 Sedan begav han sig återigen till det ställe på andra sidan Jordan, där Johannes tidigare hade varit när han döpte. Där stannade han. 41 Många kom till honom, och de sade: "Johannes gjorde visserligen inte något tecken, men allt vad han sade om Jesus var sant." 42 Och många kom där till tro på honom.

Jesus the True Shepherd
10 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by (A)name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a (B)stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.
Jesus the Good Shepherd
7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came [a]before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 (C)I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
11 (D)“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a [b]hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (E)leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and (F)I know My sheep, and (G)am known by My own. 15 (H)As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; (I)and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And (J)other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; (K)and there will be one flock and one shepherd.
17 “Therefore My Father (L)loves Me, (M)because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I (N)have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. (O)This command I have received from My Father.”
19 Therefore (P)there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. 20 And many of them said, (Q)“He has a demon and is [c]mad. Why do you listen to Him?”
21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. (R)Can a demon (S)open the eyes of the blind?”
The Shepherd Knows His Sheep
22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, (T)in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in [d]doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (U)The works that I do in My Father’s name, they (V)bear witness of Me. 26 But (W)you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, [e]as I said to you. 27 (X)My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 (Y)My Father, (Z)who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 (AA)I and My Father are one.”
Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus
31 Then (AB)the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”
33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (AC)blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, (AD)make Yourself God.”
34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, (AE)‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, (AF)to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture (AG)cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him (AH)whom the Father sanctified and (AI)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ (AJ)because I said, ‘I am (AK)the Son of God’? 37 (AL)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, (AM)believe the works, that you may know and [f]believe (AN)that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 (AO)Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.
The Believers Beyond Jordan
40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place (AP)where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, (AQ)but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.

10 1 I assure you that whoever doesn’t enter into the sheep pen through the gate but climbs over the wall is a thief and an outlaw. 2 The one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The guard at the gate opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 Whenever he has gathered all of his sheep, he goes before them and they follow him, because they know his voice. 5 They won’t follow a stranger but will run away because they don’t know the stranger’s voice.” 6 Those who heard Jesus use this analogy didn’t understand what he was saying.
I am the gate
7 So Jesus spoke again, “I assure you that I am the gate of the sheep. 8 All who came before me were thieves and outlaws, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. 9 I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 The thief enters only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came so that they could have life—indeed, so that they could live life to the fullest.
I am the good shepherd
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 When the hired hand sees the wolf coming, he leaves the sheep and runs away. That’s because he isn’t the shepherd; the sheep aren’t really his. So the wolf attacks the sheep and scatters them. 13 He’s only a hired hand and the sheep don’t matter to him.
14 “I am the good shepherd. I know my own sheep and they know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. I give up my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that don’t belong to this sheep pen. I must lead them too. They will listen to my voice and there will be one flock, with one shepherd.
17 “This is why the Father loves me: I give up my life so that I can take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I give it up because I want to. I have the right to give it up, and I have the right to take it up again. I received this commandment from my Father.”
19 There was another division among the Jews because of Jesus’ words. 20 Many of them said, “He has a demon and has lost his mind. Why listen to him?” 21 Others said, “These aren’t the words of someone who has a demon. Can a demon heal the eyes of people who are blind?”
Jesus at the Festival of Dedication
22 The time came for the Festival of Dedication[a] in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple, walking in the covered porch named for Solomon. 24 The Jewish opposition circled around him and asked, “How long will you test our patience? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
25 Jesus answered, “I have told you, but you don’t believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you don’t believe because you don’t belong to my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life. They will never die, and no one will snatch them from my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them from my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
31 Again the Jewish opposition picked up stones in order to stone him. 32 Jesus responded, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of those works do you stone me?”
33 The Jewish opposition answered, “We don’t stone you for a good work but for insulting God. You are human, yet you make yourself out to be God.”
34 Jesus replied, “Isn’t it written in your Law, I have said, you are gods?[b] 35 Scripture calls those to whom God’s word came gods, and scripture can’t be abolished. 36 So how can you say that the one whom the Father has made holy and sent into the world insults God because he said, ‘I am God’s Son’? 37 If I don’t do the works of my Father, don’t believe me. 38 But if I do them, and you don’t believe me, believe the works so that you can know and recognize that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39 Again, they wanted to arrest him, but he escaped from them.
Jesus at the Jordan
40 Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had baptized at first, and he stayed there. 41 Many people came to him. “John didn’t do any miraculous signs,” they said, “but everything John said about this man was true.” 42 Many believed in Jesus there.
