Christus, het echte licht

1 In het begin was het Woord en het Woord was bij God, en het Woord was God. 2 Het Woord was bij God in het begin. 3 Door het Woord is alles ontstaan en zonder het Woord is niets ontstaan van alles wat bestaat. 4 In het Woord was leven en het leven was het licht voor de mensen. 5 Het licht schijnt in de duisternis en de duisternis heeft het niet in zijn macht kunnen krijgen.

6 Er kwam iemand die door God was gezonden, hij heette Johannes. 7 Hij kwam om tegenover de mensen te getuigen van het licht en hen zo tot geloof te brengen. 8 Johannes was niet zelf het licht maar degene die over het licht vertelde, 9 het echte licht, dat in de wereld kwam om iedereen te verlichten. 10 Het Woord kwam in de wereld en heeft de wereld gemaakt, maar de wereld wilde niets van het Woord weten. 11 Hij kwam in zijn eigen land, maar zijn eigen volk heeft Hem niet aanvaard. 12 Maar allen die Hem wel aanvaard hebben en geloven in zijn Naam, heeft Hij het recht gegeven kinderen van God te worden. 13 Zij worden opnieuw geboren, niet op natuurlijke wijze of vanuit menselijk verlangen of omdat een mens dat wil, maar zij zijn uit God geboren. 14 Het Woord werd een mens en leefde een tijdlang onder ons. Hij was vol genade en waarheid en wij hebben gezien hoe groot Hij is, de enige Zoon van de hemelse Vader.

15 Johannes was zijn getuige en zei over Hem: ‘Dit is degene van wie ik zei dat er na mij Iemand zou komen die belangrijker is dan ik, omdat Hij er eerder was dan ik.’ 16 Uit de overvloed die Hij heeft, hebben wij allen genade op genade ontvangen. 17 Want Mozes heeft ons ooit de wet gegeven, maar Jezus Christus bracht ons genade en waarheid. 18 Niemand heeft ooit God gezien, maar zijn enige Zoon, die één met Hem is, heeft ons laten zien wie God is.

Johannes, getuige van Christus

19 De Joodse leiders stuurden priesters en tempeldienaars naar Johannes om te vragen wie hij was. 20 ‘Ik ben de Christus niet,’ zei hij hun in alle openheid. 21 ‘Wie dan wel?’ vroegen zij. ‘Elia?’ ‘Nee,’ antwoordde hij. ‘Bent u dan de profeet die komen zou?’ was hun volgende vraag. ‘Ook niet,’ zei Johannes. 22 ‘Maar wie bent u dan? Zeg het alstublieft, anders kunnen wij geen antwoord geven aan de mensen die ons gestuurd hebben.’ 23 Hij zei: ‘Ik ben de stem van iemand die in de woestijn roept: “Maak de weg vrij voor de Here!” De profeet Jesaja heeft dit gezegd.’ 24 Er stonden ook enkele Farizeeën bij, 25 die vroegen: ‘Als u de Christus niet bent en ook niet Elia of de profeet, waarom doopt u dan?’ 26 Johannes antwoordde: ‘Ik doop mensen met water. Maar in uw midden staat Hij die u nog niet kent. 27 Hij is degene die na mij komt, Hij is zo belangrijk dat ik het zelfs niet waard ben om de riem van zijn sandalen los te maken.’ 28 Dit gebeurde in Bethanië aan de overkant van de rivier de Jordaan, de plaats waar Johannes mensen doopte.

29 De volgende morgen zag hij Jezus aankomen. ‘Kijk,’ riep hij. ‘Het offerlam van God! Hij neemt de schuld van de wereld op Zich. 30 Hem bedoelde ik toen ik zei: “Na mij komt Iemand die belangrijker is dan ik, omdat Hij er eerder was dan ik.” 31 Ik kende Hem nog niet, maar ik ben gekomen om de mensen met water te dopen om Hem aan Israël bekend te maken. 32 Ik heb de Heilige Geest als een duif uit de hemel zien komen en Hij bleef op Jezus. 33 Toen wist ik nog niet dat Hij het was. Maar God had tegen mij gezegd: “Op wie u de Heilige Geest ziet neerdalen en blijven, dat is Hem. Hij zal de mensen dopen met de Heilige Geest.” 34 Nu ik dat gezien heb, ben ik ervan overtuigd dat Hij de Zoon van God is en wil ik daarvan getuigen tegenover de mensen.’

35 De volgende dag was Johannes op dezelfde plaats met twee van zijn leerlingen. 36 Hij zag Jezus voorbijgaan en zei: ‘Kijk, Hij is het Lam van God!’ 37 Toen zijn twee leerlingen dat hoorden, gingen zij Jezus achterna. 38 Jezus merkte dat zij Hem volgden. Hij keerde Zich om en vroeg: ‘Wat willen jullie?’ Zij vroegen: ‘Rabbi, waar woont U?’ Rabbi betekent leermeester. 39 ‘Kom maar kijken,’ zei Hij. Dus gingen zij met Hem mee, zagen waar Hij woonde en bleven de rest van de dag bij Hem. Dit gebeurde rond vier uur ʼs middags. 40 Een van deze twee mannen was Andreas, de broer van Simon Petrus. 41 Hij ontmoette zijn broer Simon en zei tegen hem: ‘Wij hebben de Messias gevonden.’ Messias betekent Christus, Gezalfde. 42 En hij bracht Simon bij Jezus. Jezus keek Simon aan en zei: ‘Jij bent Simon, de zoon van Johannes. Jij krijgt een andere naam, Ik noem je voortaan Kefas.’ Kefas betekent Petrus, rots.

43 De volgende dag besloot Jezus naar Galilea te gaan. Onderweg ontmoette Hij Filippus. ‘Kom,’ zei Hij, ‘ga met Mij mee.’ 44 Filippus kwam, net als Andreas en Petrus, uit Betsaïda. 45 Filippus ging naar Natanaël en zei tegen hem: ‘Wij hebben degene gevonden over wie Mozes en de profeten hebben geschreven. Hij heet Jezus en is de zoon van een zekere Jozef uit Nazareth.’ 46 ‘Uit Nazareth? Kan daar iets goeds vandaan komen?’ zei Natanaël. ‘Kom maar mee,’ antwoordde Filippus, ‘dan kun je Hem zien.’ 47 Toen Jezus Natanaël zag aankomen, zei Hij: ‘Kijk, een eerlijke, oprechte man, een echte Israëliet!’ 48 ‘Kent U mij dan?’ vroeg Natanaël verbaasd. Jezus antwoordde: ‘Voordat Filippus je vroeg mee te gaan, zag Ik je al onder de vijgeboom zitten.’ 49 ‘Meester,’ zei Natanaël, ‘U bent de Zoon van God! De koning van Israël!’ 50 Jezus antwoordde: ‘Dat geloof je omdat Ik zei dat Ik je onder de vijgeboom zag zitten? Je zult nog grotere daden zien! 51 Werkelijk, jullie zullen zelfs de hemel open zien en de engelen van God die heen en weer gaan tussen God en Mij, de Mensenzoon.’

Jesus Christus – Gottes Wort an die Welt

1 Am Anfang war das Wort.

Das Wort war bei Gott, und das Wort war Gott selbst.

2 Von Anfang an war es bei Gott.

3 Alles wurde durch das Wort geschaffen; nichts ist ohne das Wort entstanden.

4 In ihm war das Leben, und dieses Leben war das Licht für alle Menschen.

5 Es leuchtet in der Finsternis, und die Finsternis hat es nicht auslöschen können[a].

6 Gott schickte einen Boten, einen Mann, der Johannes[b] hieß.

7 Sein Auftrag war es, die Menschen auf das Licht hinzuweisen. Alle sollten durch seine Botschaft an den glauben, der das Licht ist.

8 Johannes selbst war nicht das Licht. Er sollte nur ein Zeuge für das kommende Licht sein.

9 Das wahre Licht ist der, der in die Welt gekommen ist, um für alle Menschen das Licht zu bringen.

10 Doch obwohl er unter ihnen lebte und die Welt durch ihn geschaffen wurde, erkannten ihn die Menschen nicht.

11 Er kam in seine Welt, aber die Menschen wiesen ihn ab.[c]

12 Die ihn aber aufnahmen und an ihn glaubten, denen gab er das Recht, Kinder Gottes zu werden.

13 Das wurden sie nicht, weil sie zu einem auserwählten Volk gehörten, auch nicht durch menschliche Zeugung und Geburt. Dieses neue Leben gab ihnen allein Gott.[d]

14 Das Wort wurde Mensch und lebte unter uns. Wir selbst haben seine göttliche Herrlichkeit gesehen, eine Herrlichkeit, wie sie Gott nur seinem einzigen Sohn gibt. In ihm sind Gottes Gnade und Wahrheit zu uns gekommen.

15 Johannes wies immer wieder auf ihn hin. »Diesen habe ich gemeint«, rief er, »wenn ich sagte: ›Nach mir wird einer kommen, der weit über mir steht. Denn er war schon da, bevor ich geboren wurde!‹«

16 Aus seinem göttlichen Reichtum hat er uns immer wieder mit seiner grenzenlosen Liebe beschenkt.

17 Durch Mose gab uns Gott das Gesetz mit seinen Forderungen, aber nun ist uns durch Jesus Christus seine Gnade und Wahrheit begegnet.[e] 18 Kein Mensch hat jemals Gott gesehen. Doch sein einziger Sohn, der selbst Gott ist und in enger Gemeinschaft mit dem Vater lebt, hat ihn uns gezeigt.

Johannes der Täufer weist auf Christus hin (Matthäus 3,1‒12; Markus 1,1‒8; Lukas 3,1‒18)

19 Die führenden Männer der Juden in Jerusalem schickten einige Priester und Leviten zu Johannes. Sie fragten ihn: »Wer bist du?« Da nutzte Johannes die Gelegenheit, um sie auf Jesus Christus hinzuweisen. 20 Er bekannte und ließ keinen Zweifel offen: »Ich bin nicht der Christus, der von Gott versprochene Retter.« 21 »Wer bist du dann?«, fragten sie weiter. »Bist du Elia?«[f] Johannes verneinte auch das. »Bist du der Prophet, den Mose uns angekündigt hat?«[g] »Nein!«, entgegnete Johannes.

22 »Dann sag uns doch, wer du bist. Welche Antwort sollen wir denen geben, die uns hergeschickt haben?« 23 Da sagte Johannes: »Ich bin die Stimme, die in der Wüste ruft: ›Macht den Weg frei für den Herrn!‹[h] So hat es der Prophet Jesaja schon angekündigt.«

24 Unter den Abgesandten waren auch Pharisäer. 25 Sie fragten Johannes nun: »Wenn du nicht der Christus, nicht Elia und auch nicht der von Mose angekündigte Prophet bist, mit welchem Recht taufst du dann?« 26 Darauf erwiderte Johannes: »Ich taufe mit Wasser. Aber mitten unter euch lebt schon der, auf den wir warten. Ihr kennt ihn nur noch nicht. 27 Er kommt nach mir – und ich bin nicht einmal würdig, ihm die Schuhe auszuziehen[i].« 28 Dieses Gespräch führten sie in Betanien, einem Dorf östlich des Jordan, wo Johannes taufte.

Das Opferlamm Gottes (Matthäus 3,13‒17; Markus 1,9‒11; Lukas 3,21‒22)

29 Am nächsten Tag bemerkte Johannes, dass Jesus zu ihm kam. Da rief er: »Seht, das ist Gottes Opferlamm, das die Sünde der Menschen wegnimmt.[j] 30 Dieser Mann ist es, von dem ich gesagt habe: ›Nach mir wird einer kommen, der weit über mir steht. Denn er war schon da, bevor ich geboren wurde!‹ 31 Auch ich wusste vorher nicht, wer er ist. Aber damit dem Volk Israel die Augen für ihn geöffnet werden, taufe ich hier mit Wasser.«

32 Und Johannes berichtete weiter: »Ich sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube vom Himmel herabkommen und auf ihm bleiben. 33 Wer er ist, wusste ich vorher noch nicht«, wiederholte Johannes, »aber Gott, der mir den Auftrag gab, mit Wasser zu taufen, sagte zu mir: ›Du wirst sehen, wie der Geist auf einen Menschen herabkommt und auf ihm bleibt. Dann weißt du, dass er es ist, der mit dem Heiligen Geist tauft.‹ 34 Und weil ich das gesehen habe, kann ich bezeugen: Dieser Mann ist Gottes Sohn[k]!«

Die ersten Jünger von Jesus

35 Johannes der Täufer und zwei seiner Jünger waren am nächsten Tag wieder an dieser Stelle, 36 als Jesus vorüberging. Da schaute Johannes ihn an und sagte: »Seht, dies ist Gottes Opferlamm!« 37 Als die beiden Jünger das hörten, folgten sie Jesus. 38 Jesus drehte sich zu ihnen um, sah sie kommen und fragte: »Was sucht ihr?« Sie antworteten: »Rabbi[l], wo wohnst du?« 39 »Kommt mit, dann werdet ihr es sehen!«, sagte Jesus. Also gingen sie mit Jesus dorthin, wo er wohnte. Es war ungefähr vier Uhr nachmittags, und sie blieben bei ihm bis zum Abend.

40 Einer der beiden, die Jesus auf das Wort von Johannes hin gefolgt waren, hieß Andreas. Er war der Bruder von Simon Petrus. 41 Wenig später traf er seinen Bruder Simon und erzählte ihm: »Wir haben den Messias[m] gefunden, den von Gott versprochenen Retter!« 42 Dann nahm Andreas seinen Bruder mit zu Jesus. Der sah ihn an und sagte: »Du bist Simon, der Sohn von Johannes. Von jetzt an sollst du Petrus[n] heißen!«

Jesus beruft Philippus und überzeugt Nathanael

43 Als Jesus am nächsten Tag nach Galiläa gehen wollte, traf er unterwegs Philippus. Auch ihn forderte er auf: »Komm, folge mir nach!« 44 Philippus stammte wie Andreas und Petrus aus Betsaida. 45 Später begegnete Philippus Nathanael und erzählte ihm: »Wir haben den gefunden, von dem Mose im Gesetz geschrieben hat und den die Propheten angekündigt haben. Es ist Jesus aus Nazareth, der Sohn von Josef.« 46 »Nazareth?«, entgegnete Nathanael. »Was kann von da schon Gutes kommen!« Doch Philippus antwortete ihm: »Komm mit und überzeuge dich selbst!«

47 Als Jesus Nathanael erblickte, sagte er: »Hier kommt ein wahrer Israelit, ein ganz und gar aufrichtiger Mensch!« 48 Nathanael staunte: »Woher kennst du mich?« Jesus erwiderte: »Noch bevor Philippus dich rief, habe ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum gesehen.« 49 »Rabbi, du bist wirklich Gottes Sohn!«, rief Nathanael. »Du bist der König von Israel!« 50 Jesus sagte: »Das glaubst du, weil ich dir gesagt habe, dass ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum sah. Aber du wirst noch viel größere Dinge zu sehen bekommen.« 51 Und er fuhr fort: »Ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Ihr werdet den Himmel offen und die Engel Gottes hinauf- und herabsteigen sehen zwischen Gott und dem Menschensohn!«

1 太初有道，道與　神同在，道就是　神。 2 這道太初與　神同在。 3 萬有是藉著他造的；凡被造的，沒有一樣不是藉著他造的。 4 在他裡面有生命，（有些抄本第3、4節或譯：“萬有是藉著他造的，沒有一樣不是藉著他造的；凡被造的，都在他裡面有生命……”）這生命就是人的光。 5 光照在黑暗中，黑暗不能勝過光。

6 有一個人，名叫約翰，是　神所差來的。 7 他來是要作見證，就是為光作見證，使眾人藉著他可以相信。 8 他不是那光，而是要為那光作見證。 9 那光來到世界，是普照世人的真光。 10 他在世界，世界也是藉著他造的，世界卻不認識他。 11 他到自己的地方來，自己的人卻不接受他。 12 凡接受他的，就是信他名的人，他就賜給他們權利，成為　神的兒女。 13 他們不是從血統生的，不是從肉身的意思生的，也不是從人意生的，而是從　神生的。

14 道成了肉身，住在我們中間，滿有恩典和真理。我們見過他的榮光，正是從父而來的獨生子的榮光。

15 約翰為他作見證，大聲說：“這一位就是我所說的：‘那在我以後來的，位分比我高，因為他本來是在我以前的。’” 16 從他的豐盛裡我們都領受了，而且恩上加恩。 17 律法是藉著摩西頒布的，恩典和真理卻是藉著耶穌基督而來的。 18 從來沒有人見過　神，只有在父懷裡的獨生子把他彰顯出來。

施洗約翰的見證(A)

19 以下是約翰的見證：猶太人從耶路撒冷派祭司和利未人到約翰那裡，問他：“你是誰？” 20 約翰並不否認，坦白地承認說：“我不是基督。” 21 他們又問：“那麼你是誰？是以利亞嗎？”他說：“我不是。”“是那位先知嗎？”他回答：“不是。” 22 於是他們再問：“你是誰？好讓我們回覆派我們來的人。你說你自己是誰？” 23 他說：“我就是在曠野呼喊者的聲音：‘修直主的路！’正如以賽亞先知所說的。” 24 這些人是法利賽人派來的。 25 他們問約翰：“你既然不是基督，不是以利亞，也不是那位先知，那麼你為甚麼施洗呢？” 26 約翰回答：“我是用水施洗，但有一位站在你們中間，是你們不認識的； 27 他是在我以後來的，我就是給他解鞋帶也不配。” 28 這些事發生在約旦河東的伯大尼，約翰施洗的地方。

29 第二天，約翰見耶穌迎面而來，就說：“看哪，　神的羊羔，是除去世人的罪孽的！ 30 這一位就是我所說的：‘有一個人，是在我以後來的，位分比我高，因為他本來是在我以前的。’ 31 我本來不認識他，但為了要把他顯明給以色列人，因此我來用水施洗。” 32 約翰又作見證說：“我曾看見聖靈，好像鴿子從天上降下來，停留在他的身上。 33 我本來不認識他，但那差我來用水施洗的對我說：‘你看見聖靈降下來，停留在誰身上，誰就是用聖靈施洗的。’ 34 我看見了，就作見證說：‘這就是　神的兒子。’”

呼召第一批門徒(B)

35 過了一天，約翰和他的兩個門徒又站在那裡。 36 約翰看見耶穌走過的時候，就說：“看哪，　神的羊羔！” 37 那兩個門徒聽見他的話，就跟從了耶穌。 38 耶穌轉過身來，看見他們跟著，就問：“你們要甚麼？”他們說：“拉比，你在哪裡住？”（“拉比”的意思就是“老師”。） 39 他說：“你們來看吧！”於是他們就去看他所住的地方。那一天他們就和耶穌住在一起；那時大約是下午四點鐘。 40 聽了約翰的話而跟從耶穌的那兩個人，一個是西門．彼得的弟弟安得烈。 41 他先找到自己的哥哥西門，告訴他：“我們遇見彌賽亞了！”（“彌賽亞”的意思就是“基督”。） 42 安得烈就帶他到耶穌那裡。耶穌定睛看著他，說：“你是約翰的兒子西門，你要稱為磯法。”（“磯法”翻譯出來就是“彼得”。）

呼召腓力和拿但業

43 再過一天，耶穌決定往加利利去；他遇見腓力，就對他說：“來跟從我！” 44 腓力是伯賽大人，與安得烈和彼得同鄉。 45 腓力找到拿但業，告訴他：“摩西在律法書上所寫的，和眾先知所記的那位，我們已經遇見了，他就是約瑟的兒子拿撒勒人耶穌。” 46 拿但業說：“拿撒勒還能出甚麼好的嗎？”腓力說：“你來看！” 47 耶穌看見拿但業向他走過來，就論到他說：“看哪，這的確是個以色列人，他心裡沒有詭詐。” 48 拿但業問他：“你怎麼認識我呢？”耶穌回答：“腓力還沒有招呼你，你在無花果樹下的時候，我就看見你了。” 49 拿但業說：“拉比，你是　神的兒子，你是以色列的王！” 50 耶穌說：“因為我告訴你‘我看見你在無花果樹下’，你就信了嗎？你還要看見比這些更大的事。” 51 又對他說：“我實實在在告訴你們，你們要看見天開了，　神的眾使者在人子的身上，上去下來。”

Christ Lived Before the World Was Made

1 The Word (Christ) was in the beginning. The Word was with God. The Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 He made all things. Nothing was made without Him making it. 4 Life began by Him. His Life was the Light for men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness. The darkness has never been able to put out the Light.

John the Baptist Tells of the Coming of Christ

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came to tell what he knew about the Light so that all men might believe through him. 8 John was not the Light, but he was sent to tell about the Light.

9 This true Light, coming into the world, gives light to every man. 10 He came into the world. The world was made by Him, but it did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, but His own did not receive Him. 12 He gave the right and the power to become children of God to those who received Him. He gave this to those who put their trust in His name. 13 These children of God were not born of blood and of flesh and of man’s desires, but they were born of God. 14 Christ became human flesh and lived among us. We saw His shining-greatness. This greatness is given only to a much-loved Son from His Father. He was full of loving-favor and truth.

John the Baptist Makes the Way Ready for Jesus Christ (A)

15 John told about Christ and said, “I have been telling you about this One. I said, ‘He is coming after me. He is more important than I because He lived before me.’” 16 From Him Who has so much we have all received loving-favor, one loving-favor after another. 17 The Law was given through Moses, but loving-favor and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 The much-loved Son is beside the Father. No man has ever seen God. But Christ has made God known to us.

19 The Jews sent their religious leaders and men from the family group of Levi to ask John, “Who are you?” 20 He told them without holding back any words, “I am not the Christ!” 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!” Then they asked, “Are you the special One Who was to come to speak for God?” John said, “No.” 22 Then they asked him, “Who are you? We must tell those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John said, “I am the voice of one crying in the desert. ‘Make the road straight for the Lord,’ as the early preacher Isaiah said.” (B)

24 Those who had been sent were from the proud religious law-keepers. 25 They asked John again, “Then why do you baptize if you are not the Christ or Elijah or that special One Who was to come to speak for God?” 26 John answered, “I baptize with water. But there is One standing among you Whom you do not know. 27 He is the One Who is coming after me. I am not good enough to get down and help Him take off His shoes.” 28 All this happened when John was baptizing in the town of Bethany. He was on the other side of the Jordan River.

The Baptism of Jesus (C)

29 The next day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming to him. He said, “See! The Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world! 30 I have been talking about Him. I said, ‘One is coming after me Who is more important than I, because He lived before I was born.’ 31 I did not know who He was, but I have come to baptize with water so the Jews might know about Him.”

32 Then John said, “I saw the Holy Spirit come down on Jesus as a dove from heaven. The Holy Spirit stayed on Him. 33 I did not know Him then. But God sent me to baptize with water. God said to me, ‘The Holy Spirit will come down and stay on Him. He is the One Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I saw this happen. I am now saying that Jesus is the Son of God.”

Jesus Calls Andrew and Peter

35 The next day John the Baptist was standing with two of his own followers. 36 Jesus walked by. John looked at Him and said, “See! The Lamb of God.” 37 John’s two followers heard him say this and followed Jesus.

38 Jesus turned around and saw them following. He said to them, “What are you looking for?” They answered, “Teacher, where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They followed Him and saw where He lived. They stayed with Him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who had heard John’s words and had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing he did was to find his brother Simon. He said to him, “We have found the Christ!” 42 Andrew took Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw Simon, He said, “You are Simon, the son of John. Your name will be Cephas.” The name Cephas means Peter, or a rock.

Jesus Calls Philip And Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus wanted to go to the country of Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Philip was from the town of Bethsaida. Andrew and Peter were from this town also. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law. He is the One the early preachers wrote about. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said, “Can anything good come out of the town of Nazareth?” Philip said, “Come and see.”

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him and said, “See! There is a true Jew. There is nothing false in him.” 48 Nathanael said to Jesus, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip talked to you, I saw you under the fig tree.” 49 Nathanael said to Him, “Teacher, You are the Son of God. You are the King of the Jews.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Do you believe because I said I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that. 51 For sure, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and God’s angels going up and coming and down on the Son of Man.”

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word,(A) and the Word was with God,(B) and the Word was God.(C) 2 He was with God in the beginning.(D) 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(E) 4 In him was life,(F) and that life was the light(G) of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness,(H) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(I)

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(J) 7 He came as a witness to testify(K) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(L) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light(M) that gives light to everyone(N) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,(O) the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.(P) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed(Q) in his name,(R) he gave the right to become children of God(S)— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.(T)

He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)(Z) 16 Out of his fullness(AA) we have all received grace(AB) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(AC) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(AD) 18 No one has ever seen God,(AE) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b](AF) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s(AG) testimony when the Jewish leaders[c](AH) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(AI)

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(AJ)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”(AK)

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(AL) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[d](AM)

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with[e] water,”(AN) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(AO) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(AP)

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(AQ) where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(AR) who takes away the sin of the world!(AS) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(AT) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(AU) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(AV) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(AW) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[f](AX)

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus(AY)

35 The next day John(AZ) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”(BA)

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi”(BB) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).(BC) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called(BD) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).(BE)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(BF) he said to him, “Follow me.”(BG)

44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(BH) 45 Philip found Nathanael(BI) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(BJ) and about whom the prophets also wrote(BK)—Jesus of Nazareth,(BL) the son of Joseph.”(BM)

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(BN) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(BO) in whom there is no deceit.”(BP)

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(BQ) you are the Son of God;(BR) you are the king of Israel.”(BS)

50 Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open,(BT) and the angels of God ascending and descending(BU) on’[k] the Son of Man.”(BV)
