Gud blev människa

I början fanns Ordet[a]. Ordet fanns hos Gud, och Ordet var Gud. Han fanns hos Gud i början. Genom honom blev allting till, och utan honom blev ingenting till av det som finns till. I honom fanns livet, och livet var människornas ljus. Ljuset lyser i mörkret, och mörkret har inte övervunnit[b] det.

Det kom en man, sänd av Gud, som hette Johannes, för att vittna om ljuset, så att alla skulle kunna komma till tro genom honom. Själv var han inte ljuset. Han var bara den som skulle vittna om ljuset. Det sanna ljuset, han som är hela mänsklighetens ljus, skulle nu komma in i världen.

10 Han var i världen, och genom honom hade världen blivit till, men världen kände inte igen honom. 11 Han kom till det som var hans eget, och hans egna tog inte emot honom. 12 Men åt alla som tog emot honom gav han rätten att bli Guds barn, åt alla som tror på hans namn 13 och som inte är födda genom blod, eller köttets vilja, eller av någon mans vilja, utan av Gud.

14 Och Ordet blev människa och levde bland oss. Vi såg hans härlighet, den härlighet som den ende Sonen har fått av sin Fader. Han var full av nåd och sanning.

15 Johannes vittnar om honom och ropar: ”Det var om honom jag sa: ’Han som kommer efter mig är före mig, för han fanns till före mig.[c]’ ”

16 Av hans fullhet har vi alla fått ta emot nåd och åter nåd. 17 Lagen gavs genom Mose, men genom Jesus Kristus kom nåden och sanningen. 18 Ingen har någonsin sett Gud, men hans ende Son, som själv är Gud[d] och är vid Faderns sida, han har gjort honom känd.

Johannes döparen talar om Jesus

(Matt 3:1-12; Mark 1:2-8; Luk 3:1-18)

19 Detta var Johannes vittnesbörd när judarna hade skickat präster och leviter från Jerusalem, för att fråga honom vem han var. 20 Johannes döparen bekände, utan att förneka bekände han: ”Jag är inte Messias.”

21 ”Vem är du då?” frågade de. ”Är du Elia[e]?”

”Nej”, svarade han, ”det är jag inte.”

”Är du profeten[f]?”

”Nej”, svarade han.

22 Då sa de: ”Vem är du då? Något svar måste vi ha att ge till dem som har sänt oss. Vad säger du om dig själv?”

23 Han svarade: ”Jag är en röst som ropar i ödemarken: ’Bana väg för Herren![g]’ som profeten Jesaja har sagt.”

24 De som hade sänts ut av fariseerna 25 frågade honom nu: ”Varför döper du om du varken är Messias eller Elia eller profeten?”

26 Johannes svarade dem: ”Jag döper i vatten, men mitt ibland er står en som ni inte känner. 27 Han är den som kommer efter mig, och jag är inte ens värdig att knyta upp hans sandalremmar.[h]

28 Detta hände i Betania, på andra sidan Jordanfloden, där Johannes döpte.

Jesus är Guds lamm

29 Nästa dag såg han Jesus komma emot honom och sa: ”Där är Guds lamm, som tar bort världens synd. 30 Det var honom jag talade om när jag sa: ’Han som kommer efter mig är före mig, för han fanns till före mig.’ 31 Jag kände honom inte, men för att han ska uppenbaras för Israel har jag kommit för att döpa i vatten.”

32 Johannes vittnade: ”Jag såg Anden komma ner från himlen som en duva och stanna kvar över honom. 33 Jag kände honom inte, men han som sände mig för att döpa i vatten sa till mig: ’Den du ser Anden komma ner och stanna kvar över är den som döper i den heliga Anden.’ 34 Jag har sett det och vittnat att han är Guds Son[i].”

De första lärjungarna

35 Dagen efter stod Johannes döparen där igen med två av sina lärjungar, 36 och när Jesus kom gående förbi såg Johannes på honom och sa: ”Där är Guds lamm!”

37 De båda lärjungarna hörde detta och började följa Jesus. 38 När Jesus då vände sig om och såg att de följde efter honom, frågade han dem: ”Är det något ni vill?”

De svarade: ”Rabbi (det betyder mästare), var bor du?”

39 Då sa Jesus: ”Kom med mig och se.” Och så gick de med honom till den plats där han bodde. Det var runt fyra-tiden på eftermiddagen, och de stannade sedan hos honom den dagen. 40 Den ene av de två som hade hört vad Johannes sa och sedan följt efter Jesus var Andreas, Simon Petrus bror.

41 Denne letade först reda på sin bror Simon och sa till honom: ”Vi har funnit Messias” (Messias betyder Kristus).[j] 42 Och han tog med sig honom till Jesus. Jesus såg då på honom och sa: ”Du är Simon, Johannes son. Men du ska kallas Kefas (det betyder Petrus).[k]

43 Dagen därpå tänkte Jesus gå till Galileen. Då träffade han Filippos och sa till honom: ”Följ mig.” 44 Filippos var från Betsaida, Andreas och Petrus hemstad.

45 Filippos fann Natanael och sa till honom: ”Vi har funnit honom som Moses lag och profeterna talar om, Jesus, Son till Josef, från Nasaret.”

46 ”Nasaret!” sa Natanael. ”Kan något gott komma därifrån?”

”Kom och se själv”, svarade Filippos.

47 När Jesus såg Natanael närma sig, sa han: ”Här kommer en sann israelit[l]. Det finns inget svek i honom.”

48 ”Hur kan du känna mig?” undrade Natanael.

Jesus svarade: ”Jag såg dig under fikonträdet innan Filippos kallade på dig.”

49 Då sa Natanael: ”Rabbi, du är Guds Son, Israels kung!”

50 Men Jesus sa till honom: ”Tror du detta för att jag sa att jag såg dig under fikonträdet? Du kommer att få se större ting än så.” 51 Han sa vidare: ”Ja, sannerligen[m] säger jag er: ni ska få se himlen öppen och Guds änglar stiga upp och stiga ner över Människosonen.”[n]

The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word,(A) and the Word was with God,(B) and the Word was God.(C) He was with God in the beginning.(D) Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(E) In him was life,(F) and that life was the light(G) of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness,(H) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(I)

There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(J) He came as a witness to testify(K) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(L) He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light(M) that gives light to everyone(N) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,(O) the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.(P) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed(Q) in his name,(R) he gave the right to become children of God(S) 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.(T)

14 The Word became flesh(U) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,(V) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace(W) and truth.(X)

15 (John testified(Y) concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)(Z) 16 Out of his fullness(AA) we have all received grace(AB) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(AC) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(AD) 18 No one has ever seen God,(AE) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b](AF) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s(AG) testimony when the Jewish leaders[c](AH) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(AI)

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(AJ)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”(AK)

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(AL) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[d](AM)

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with[e] water,”(AN) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(AO) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(AP)

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(AQ) where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(AR) who takes away the sin of the world!(AS) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(AT) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(AU) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(AV) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(AW) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[f](AX)

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus(AY)

35 The next day John(AZ) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”(BA)

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi”(BB) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).(BC) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called(BD) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).(BE)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(BF) he said to him, “Follow me.”(BG)

44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(BH) 45 Philip found Nathanael(BI) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(BJ) and about whom the prophets also wrote(BK)—Jesus of Nazareth,(BL) the son of Joseph.”(BM)

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(BN) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(BO) in whom there is no deceit.”(BP)

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(BQ) you are the Son of God;(BR) you are the king of Israel.”(BS)

50 Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open,(BT) and the angels of God ascending and descending(BU) on’[k] the Son of Man.”(BV)

In the beginning was the Word,
    and the Word was with God,

There was a man sent from God whose name was Yochanan. He came to be a testimony, to bear witness concerning the light; so that through him, everyone might put his trust in God and be faithful to him. He himself was not that light; no, he came to bear witness concerning the light.

This was the true light,
    which gives light to everyone entering the world.

10 He was in the world — the world came to be through him —
    yet the world did not know him.

11 He came to his own homeland,
    yet his own people did not receive him.

12 But to as many as did receive him, to those who put their trust in his person and power, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 not because of bloodline, physical impulse or human intention, but because of God.

14 The Word became a human being and lived with us,
    and we saw his Sh’khinah,
the Sh’khinah of the Father’s only Son,
    full of grace and truth.

15 Yochanan witnessed concerning him when he cried out, “This is the man I was talking about when I said, ‘The one coming after me has come to rank ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”

16 We have all received from his fullness,
    yes, grace upon grace.

17 For the Torah was given through Moshe;
    grace and truth came through Yeshua the Messiah.

18 No one has ever seen God; but the only and unique Son, who is identical with God and is at the Father’s side — he has made him known.

19 Here is Yochanan’s testimony: when the Judeans sent cohanim and L’vi’im from Yerushalayim to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 he was very straightforward and stated clearly, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 “Then who are you?” they asked him. “Are you Eliyahu?” “No, I am not,” he said. “Are you ‘the prophet,’ the one we’re expecting?” “No,” he replied. 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? — so that we can give an answer to the people who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?” 23 He answered in the words of Yesha‘yahu the prophet, “I am

The voice of someone crying out:
‘In the desert make the way of Adonai straight!’”[a]

24 Some of those who had been sent were P’rushim. 25 They asked him, “If you are neither the Messiah nor Eliyahu nor ‘the prophet,’ then why are you immersing people?” 26 To them Yochanan replied, “I am immersing people in water, but among you is standing someone whom you don’t know. 27 He is the one coming after me — I’m not good enough even to untie his sandal!” 28 All this took place in Beit-Anyah, east of the Yarden, where Yochanan was immersing.

29 The next day, Yochanan saw Yeshua coming toward him and said, “Look! God’s lamb! The one who is taking away the sin of the world! 30 This is the man I was talking about when I said, ‘After me is coming someone who has come to rank above me, because he existed before me.’ 31 I myself did not know who he was, but the reason I came immersing with water was so that he might be made known to Isra’el.” 32 Then Yochanan gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and remaining on him. 33 I myself did not know who he was, but the one who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is the one who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.’ 34 And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

35 The next day, Yochanan was again standing with two of his talmidim. 36 On seeing Yeshua walking by, he said, “Look! God’s lamb!” 37 His two talmidim heard him speaking, and they followed Yeshua. 38 Yeshua turned and saw them following him, and he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi!” (which means “Teacher!”) “Where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and remained with him the rest of the day — it was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 40 One of the two who had heard Yochanan and had followed Yeshua was Andrew the brother of Shim‘on Kefa.

41 The first thing he did was to find his brother Shim‘on and tell him, “We’ve found the Mashiach!” (The word means “one who has been anointed.”) 42 He took him to Yeshua. Looking at him, Yeshua said, “You are Shim‘on Bar-Yochanan; you will be known as Kefa.” (The name means “rock.”)

43 The next day, having decided to leave for the Galil, Yeshua found Philip and said, “Follow me!” 44 Philip was from Beit-Tzaidah, the town where Andrew and Kefa lived. 45 Philip found Natan’el and told him, “We’ve found the one that Moshe wrote about in the Torah, also the Prophets — it’s Yeshua Ben-Yosef from Natzeret!” 46 Natan’el answered him, “Natzeret? Can anything good come from there?” “Come and see,” Philip said to him. 47 Yeshua saw Natan’el coming toward him and remarked about him, “Here’s a true son of Isra’el — nothing false in him!” 48 Natan’el said to him, “How do you know me?” Yeshua answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Natan’el said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Isra’el!” 50 Yeshua answered him, “you believe all this just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that!” 51 Then he said to him, “Yes indeed! I tell you that you will see heaven opened and the angels of God going up and coming down[b] on the Son of Man!”

18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
