¹⁶ The Lord will roar^(A) from Zion
    and thunder from Jerusalem;^(B)
    the earth and the heavens will tremble.^(C)
But the Lord will be a refuge^(D) for his people,
    a stronghold^(E) for the people of Israel.

“The Lord roars^(A) from Zion
    and thunders^(B) from Jerusalem;^(C)
the pastures of the shepherds dry up,
    and the top of Carmel^(D) withers.”^(E)

¹⁰ Before them the earth shakes,^(A)
    the heavens tremble,^(B)
the sun and moon are darkened,^(C)
    and the stars no longer shine.^(D)
11 The Lord^(E) thunders^(F)
    at the head of his army;^(G)
his forces are beyond number,
    and mighty is the army that obeys his command.
The day of the Lord is great;^(H)
    it is dreadful.
    Who can endure it?^(I)

“‘The Lord will roar^(A) from on high;
    he will thunder^(B) from his holy dwelling^(C)
    and roar mightily against his land.
He will shout like those who tread^(D) the grapes,
    shout against all who live on the earth.
³¹ The tumult^(E) will resound to the ends of the earth,
    for the Lord will bring charges^(F) against the nations;
he will bring judgment^(G) on all^(H) mankind
    and put the wicked to the sword,^(I)’”
declares the Lord.

¹⁹ Lord, my strength and my fortress,
    my refuge^(A) in time of distress,
to you the nations will come^(B)
    from the ends of the earth and say,
“Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods,^(C)
    worthless idols^(D) that did them no good.^(E)

³ For you have been my refuge,^(A)
    a strong tower against the foe.^(B)

¹⁶ I have put my words in your mouth^(A)
    and covered you with the shadow of my hand^(B)—
I who set the heavens in place,
    who laid the foundations of the earth,^(C)
    and who say to Zion, ‘You are my people.^(D)’”
