Joel 2
New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
2 Blow the trumpet in Zion;
sound the alarm on my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for the day of the Lord is coming, it is near—(A)
2 a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and thick darkness!
Like blackness spread upon the mountains,
a great and powerful army comes;
their like has never been from of old,
nor will be again after them
in ages to come.(B)
3 Fire devours in front of them,
and behind them a flame burns.
Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,
but after them a desolate wilderness,
and nothing escapes them.(C)
4 They have the appearance of horses,
and like war horses they charge.(D)
5 As with the rumbling of chariots,
they leap on the tops of the mountains,
like the crackling of a flame of fire
devouring the stubble,
like a powerful army
drawn up for battle.(E)
6 Before them peoples are in anguish;
all faces grow pale.[a](F)
7 Like warriors they charge;
like soldiers they scale the wall.
Each keeps to its own course;
they do not swerve from their paths.
8 They do not jostle one another;
each keeps to its own track;
they burst through the weapons
and are not halted.
9 They leap upon the city;
they run upon the walls;
they climb up into the houses;
they enter through the windows like a thief.(G)
10 The earth quakes before them;
the heavens tremble.
The sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withdraw their shining.(H)
11 The Lord utters his voice
at the head of his army;
how vast is his host!
Numberless are those who obey his command.
Truly the day of the Lord is great,
terrible indeed—who can endure it?(I)
12 Yet even now, says the Lord,
return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;(J)
13 rend your hearts and not your clothing.
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love,
and relenting from punishment.(K)
14 Who knows whether he will not turn and relent
and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
for the Lord your God?(L)
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion;
consecrate a fast;
call a solemn assembly;(M)
16 gather the people.
Consecrate the congregation;
assemble the aged;
gather the children,
even infants at the breast.
Let the bridegroom leave his room
and the bride her canopy.(N)
17 Between the vestibule and the altar,
let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep.
Let them say, “Spare your people, O Lord,
and do not make your heritage a mockery,
a byword among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’ ”(O)
God’s Response and Promise
18 Then the Lord became jealous for his land
and had pity on his people.(P)
19 In response to his people the Lord said:
“I am sending you
grain, wine, and oil,
and you will be satisfied;
and I will no more make you
a mockery among the nations.(Q)
20 I will remove the northern army far from you
and drive it into a parched and desolate land,
its front into the eastern sea
and its rear into the western sea;
its stench and foul smell will rise up.”
Surely he has done great things!(R)
21 Do not fear, O soil;
be glad and rejoice,
for the Lord has done great things!
22 Do not fear, you animals of the field,
for the pastures of the wilderness are green;
the tree bears its fruit;
the fig tree and vine give their full yield.(S)
23 O children of Zion, be glad,
and rejoice in the Lord your God,
for he has given the early rain[b] for your vindication;
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the later rain, as before.(T)
24 The threshing floors shall be full of grain;
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 I will repay you for the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army that I sent against you.(U)
26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied
and praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.(V)
27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel
and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.(W)
God’s Spirit Poured Out
28 [c]Then afterward
I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.(X)
29 Even on the male and female slaves,
in those days I will pour out my spirit.(Y)
30 I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.(Z) 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.(AA) 32 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved, for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.(AB)
Joel 2
King James Version
2 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.
5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.
10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
11 And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
18 Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.
19 Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things.
22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
Joel 2
Svenska Folkbibeln 2015
Herrens dag
2 (A) Blås i basun på Sion,
under kommande släkten.
3 Framför dem
går en förtärande eld,
bakom dem
en brännande låga.
Landet framför dem
var som Edens lustgård,
9 (D) De stormar in i staden,
rusar fram på murarna,
klättrar upp på husen,
går in genom fönstren
som tjuvar.
10 (E) Inför dem darrar jorden,
himlen bävar,
solen och månen förmörkas
och stjärnorna mister sitt sken.
11 (F) Herren låter sin röst höras
framför sin här.
Mycket stor är hans armé,
stark är den som utför
hans order,
för Herrens dag är stor
och mycket skrämmande.
Vem kan uthärda den?
Kallelse till omvändelse
12 (G) Men nu, säger Herren,
vänd om till mig
av hela ert hjärta,
med fasta, gråt och klagan.
13 (H) Riv sönder era hjärtan,
inte era kläder,
och vänd om till Herren er Gud,
för han är nådig och barmhärtig,
sen till vrede och stor i nåd,
och han ångrar det onda.
14 (I) Vem vet?
Kanske vänder han om
och ångrar sig
och lämnar kvar en välsignelse
efter sig
till matoffer och drickoffer
åt Herren er Gud.
15 (J) Blås i basun på Sion,
pålys en helig fasta,
utropa en helig sammankomst.
16 (K) Samla folket,
helga församlingen,
kalla samman de äldste,
samla de små barnen,
också dem som diar vid bröstet.
Låt brudgummen komma ut
ur sitt rum
och bruden ur sin kammare.
17 (L) Låt prästerna, Herrens tjänare,
gråta mellan förhuset och altaret
och säga:
”Herre, skona ditt folk
och låt inte din arvedel hånas
och bli en nidvisa
bland hednafolken.
Varför ska det få sägas bland folken:
Var är deras Gud?”
Herrens svar
18 Då fylldes Herren
av lidelse för sitt land,
och han förbarmade sig
över sitt folk.
19 (M) Herren svarade
och sade till sitt folk:
Se, jag ska sända er
säd och vin och olja
så att ni blir mätta.
Och jag ska inte
låta hednafolken håna er längre.
20 (N) Fienden från norr
ska jag driva långt bort ifrån er,
jag ska driva ut honom
till ett torrt och öde land,
hans förtrupp till havet i öster
och hans eftertrupp till havet
i väster.[c]
Stank ska stiga från honom,
ja, vidrig lukt ska stiga
från honom,
för han har gjort stora ting.
21 Var inte rädd, du land!
Jubla och gläd dig,
för Herren har gjort stora ting.
22 (O) Var inte rädda, ni markens djur,
för ödemarkens beten grönskar
och träden bär sin frukt,
fikonträden och vinstockarna
ger sin rikedom.
23 (P) Jubla, ni Sions barn,
gläd er i Herren er Gud,
utgjuta min Ande.
30 Och jag ska göra tecken
på himlen och på jorden,
blod, eld och rökpelare.
31 Solen ska vändas i mörker
och månen i blod
innan Herrens dag kommer,
den stora och skrämmande.
32 (T) Och det ska ske att var och en
som åkallar Herrens namn
ska bli frälst.
På Sions berg och i Jerusalem
ska det finnas en räddad skara,
så som Herren har sagt,
bland de överlevande
som Herren kallar.[g]
