⁵ With a noise like that of chariots^(A)
    they leap over the mountaintops,
like a crackling fire^(B) consuming stubble,
    like a mighty army drawn up for battle.

²⁴ Therefore, as tongues of fire^(A) lick up straw^(B)
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay^(C)
    and their flowers blow away like dust;^(D)
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
    and spurned the word^(E) of the Holy One^(F) of Israel.

³⁰ The Lord will cause people to hear his majestic voice^(A)
    and will make them see his arm^(B) coming down
with raging anger^(C) and consuming fire,^(D)
    with cloudburst, thunderstorm^(E) and hail.^(F)

³ The shields of the soldiers are red;
    the warriors are clad in scarlet.^(A)
The metal on the chariots flashes
    on the day they are made ready;
    the spears of juniper are brandished.^[a]
4 The chariots^(B) storm through the streets,
    rushing back and forth through the squares.
They look like flaming torches;
    they dart about like lightning.
