1 Esta é a mensagem que o SENHOR deu a Joel, filho de Petuel.
A terra está de luto porque os campos foram destruídos
2 Joel diz: “Ouçam isto, líderes[a]!
Escutem com atenção,
todos os moradores do país!
Alguma vez aconteceu algo parecido na vida de vocês
ou na vida dos seus antepassados?
3 Contem aos seus filhos,
e que eles contem aos filhos deles,
e que estes contem à geração seguinte.
4 O que não foi comido pela larva,
foi comido pelo gafanhoto.
O que não foi comido pelo gafanhoto,
foi comido pelo pulgão.
E o que não foi comido pelo pulgão,
foi comido pelo grilo.[b]
5 “Acordem, bêbados, e chorem!
Que todos os que bebem muito vinho chorem amargamente,
porque já não terão mais vinho doce para provar”.
6 O Senhor diz: “Uma nação forte e numerosa
invadiu meu país.
Suas armas são afiadas como os dentes do leão
e poderosas como a sua queixada.
7 Eles destruíram a minha parreira
e fizeram em pedaços a minha figueira.
Tiraram toda a casca das duas
e deixaram os seus galhos nus”.
8 Joel diz: “Chorem como uma noiva que não acha consolo
e se veste de luto pela morte do seu prometido.
9 Chorem amargamente,
sacerdotes, servos do SENHOR,
porque não será achado vinho ou grão
para oferecer no templo do SENHOR.
10 A terra está de luto,
porque os campos foram destruídos,
o trigo foi perdido,
já não tem mais vinho novo
e acabou o azeite de oliva.
11 Sintam dor, camponeses;
sofram, cuidadores de vinha,
pelo trigo e pela cevada,
pela colheita perdida.
12 A parreira ficou seca,
a figueira murchou;
também ficaram secas as romãzeiras,
as palmeiras, as macieiras
e todas as árvores do campo.
Por isso também acabou a alegria das pessoas.
13 “Vistam a roupa de luto, sacerdotes;
chorem amargamente, encarregados do altar.
Venham, servidores do meu Deus
e passem a noite em luto.
Porque não tem mais oferta de cereal
nem oferta de líquidos no templo do seu Deus.
14 Organizem um dia de jejum.
Convoquem uma reunião
para os líderes
e para todos os moradores do país,
no templo do SENHOR, seu Deus,
e gritem por ajuda ao SENHOR.
15 “Ai, o dia do juízo do SENHOR se aproxima.
O Todo-Poderoso os destruirá com toda a sua força.
16 Não percebem que não há mais comida
e não há mais alegres comemorações no nosso templo de Deus?
17 As sementes não dão fruto,
ficaram secas por baixo da terra.
Os celeiros estão destruídos
e os lugares onde se guardam os cereais foram derrubados,
porque o trigo murchou.
18 “Como se queixam os animais!
O gado anda perdido,
porque não há pasto para comer.
Até as ovelhas estão morrendo de fome.
19 SENHOR, suplico a sua ajuda,
porque o fogo tem consumido
os pastos do deserto e as árvores do campo.
20 Até os animais selvagens suplicam para que o Senhor os ajude,
porque não tem mais água nos rios,
e o fogo tem queimado os pastos”.

A terrível carestia causada pela locusta e pela seca
1 Palavra do Senhor que foi dirigida a Joel, filho de Petuel. 2 Ouvi isto, vós, anciãos, e escutai, todos os moradores da terra: Aconteceu isto em vossos dias? Ou também nos dias de vossos pais? 3 Fazei sobre isto uma narração a vossos filhos, e vossos filhos, a seus filhos, e os filhos destes, à outra geração. 4 O que ficou da lagarta, o comeu o gafanhoto, e o que ficou do gafanhoto, o comeu a locusta, e o que ficou da locusta, o comeu o pulgão. 5 Despertai, ébrios, e chorai; gemei, todos os que bebeis vinho, por causa do mosto, porque tirado é da vossa boca. 6 Porque uma nação subiu sobre a minha terra, poderosa e sem número; os seus dentes são dentes de leão, e tem queixadas de um leão velho. 7 Fez da minha vide uma assolação, e tirou a casca da minha figueira, e despiu-a toda, e a lançou por terra; os seus sarmentos se embranqueceram. 8 Lamenta como a virgem que está cingida de pano de saco pelo marido da sua mocidade. 9 Foi cortada a oferta de manjar e a libação da Casa do Senhor; os sacerdotes, servos do Senhor, estão entristecidos. 10 O campo está assolado, e a terra, triste; porque o trigo está destruído, o mosto se secou, o óleo falta. 11 Os lavradores se envergonham, os vinhateiros gemem sobre o trigo e sobre a cevada; porque a colheita do campo pereceu. 12 A vide se secou, a figueira se murchou; a romeira também, e a palmeira, e a macieira; todas as árvores do campo se secaram, e a alegria se secou entre os filhos dos homens. 13 Cingi-vos e lamentai-vos, sacerdotes; gemei, ministros do altar; entrai e passai, vestidos de panos de saco, durante a noite, ministros do meu Deus; porque a oferta de manjares e a libação cortadas foram da Casa de vosso Deus. 14 Santificai um jejum, apregoai um dia de proibição, congregai os anciãos e todos os moradores desta terra, na Casa do Senhor, vosso Deus, e clamai ao Senhor. 15 Ah! Aquele dia! Porque o dia do Senhor está perto e virá como uma assolação do Todo-Poderoso. 16 Porventura o mantimento não está cortado de diante de nossos olhos? A alegria e o regozijo, da Casa de nosso Deus? 17 A semente apodreceu debaixo dos seus torrões, os celeiros foram assolados, os armazéns, derribados, porque se secou o trigo. 18 Como geme o gado! As manadas de vacas estão confusas, porque não têm pasto; também os rebanhos de ovelhas são destruídos.
19 A ti, ó Senhor, clamo, porque o fogo consumiu os pastos do deserto, e a chama abrasou todas as árvores do campo. 20 Também todos os animais do campo bramam a ti; porque os rios se secaram, e o fogo consumiu os pastos do deserto.

1 The word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.
2 Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or in the days of your fathers? 3 Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation. 4 That which [a]the palmer-worm hath left hath [b]the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath [c]the canker-worm eaten; and that which the canker-worm hath left hath [d]the caterpillar eaten.
5 Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and wail, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth. 6 For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number; his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the jaw-teeth of a lioness. 7 He hath laid my vine waste, and [e]barked my fig-tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it [f]away; the branches thereof are made white.
8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. 9 The meal-offering and the drink-offering are cut off from the house of Jehovah; the priests, Jehovah’s ministers, mourn. 10 The field is laid waste, the land mourneth; for the grain is destroyed, the new wine is [g]dried up, the oil languisheth. 11 [h]Be confounded, O ye husbandmen, wail, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; for the harvest of the field is perished. 12 The vine is [i]withered, and the fig-tree languisheth; the pomegranate-tree, the palm-tree also, and the apple-tree, even all the trees of the field are withered: for joy is [j]withered away from the sons of men.
13 Gird yourselves with sackcloth, and lament, ye priests; wail, ye ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meal-offering and the drink-offering are withholden from the house of your God. 14 Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the [k]old men and all the inhabitants of the land unto the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah.
15 Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, and as destruction from [l]the Almighty shall it come. 16 Is not the food cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God? 17 The seeds [m]rot under their clods; the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the grain is [n]withered. 18 How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep [o]are made desolate. 19 O Jehovah, to thee do I cry; for the fire hath devoured the [p]pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field. 20 Yea, the beasts of the field pant unto thee; for the water brooks are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the [q]pastures of the wilderness.

An Invasion of Locusts
2 Hear this,(C) you elders;(D)
listen, all who live in the land.(E)
Has anything like this ever happened in your days
or in the days of your ancestors?(F)
3 Tell it to your children,(G)
and let your children tell it to their children,
and their children to the next generation.(H)
4 What the locust(I) swarm has left
the great locusts have eaten;
what the great locusts have left
the young locusts have eaten;
what the young locusts have left(J)
other locusts[a] have eaten.(K)
5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep!
Wail, all you drinkers of wine;(L)
wail because of the new wine,
for it has been snatched(M) from your lips.
6 A nation has invaded my land,
a mighty army without number;(N)
it has the teeth(O) of a lion,
the fangs of a lioness.
7 It has laid waste(P) my vines
and ruined my fig trees.(Q)
It has stripped off their bark
and thrown it away,
leaving their branches white.
8 Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth(R)
grieving for the betrothed of her youth.
9 Grain offerings and drink offerings(S)
are cut off from the house of the Lord.
The priests are in mourning,(T)
those who minister before the Lord.
10 The fields are ruined,
the ground is dried up;(U)
the grain is destroyed,
the new wine(V) is dried up,
the olive oil fails.(W)
11 Despair, you farmers,(X)
wail, you vine growers;
grieve for the wheat and the barley,(Y)
because the harvest of the field is destroyed.(Z)
12 The vine is dried up
and the fig tree is withered;(AA)
the pomegranate,(AB) the palm and the apple[b] tree—
all the trees of the field—are dried up.(AC)
Surely the people’s joy
is withered away.
A Call to Lamentation
13 Put on sackcloth,(AD) you priests, and mourn;
wail, you who minister(AE) before the altar.
Come, spend the night in sackcloth,
you who minister before my God;
for the grain offerings and drink offerings(AF)
are withheld from the house of your God.
14 Declare a holy fast;(AG)
call a sacred assembly.
Summon the elders
and all who live in the land(AH)
to the house of the Lord your God,
and cry out(AI) to the Lord.(AJ)
15 Alas for that(AK) day!
For the day of the Lord(AL) is near;
it will come like destruction from the Almighty.[c](AM)
16 Has not the food been cut off(AN)
before our very eyes—
joy and gladness(AO)
from the house of our God?(AP)
17 The seeds are shriveled
beneath the clods.[d](AQ)
The storehouses are in ruins,
the granaries have been broken down,
for the grain has dried up.
18 How the cattle moan!
The herds mill about
because they have no pasture;(AR)
even the flocks of sheep are suffering.(AS)
