Joel kündigt den Gerichtstag des Herrn an (Kapitel 1–4)
Heuschrecken, die Vorboten von Gottes Strafgericht
1 In diesem Buch ist die Botschaft aufgeschrieben, die Joel, der Sohn Petuëls, vom Herrn empfing.
2 Hört zu, ihr Anführer des Volkes, passt gut auf, ihr Bewohner dieses Landes! Hat sich jemals so etwas Schreckliches zu euren Lebzeiten oder zur Zeit eurer Vorfahren ereignet? 3 Erzählt euren Kindern davon, damit sie es ihren eigenen Kindern weitersagen, und diese sollen den folgenden Generationen darüber berichten: 4 Riesige Heuschreckenschwärme sind über unser Land hergefallen und haben alles kahl gefressen. Was die einen übrig ließen, haben die anderen vertilgt.[a]
5 Kommt endlich zu euch, ihr Betrunkenen! Jammert und weint, ihr fröhlichen Zecher, denn mit dem Weintrinken ist es nun vorbei! 6 Ein ganzes Heer von Heuschrecken hat sich in Israel breitgemacht, sie sind mächtig und nicht zu zählen. Sie haben Zähne wie Löwen und sind genauso gefräßig! 7 Nun sind unsere Weinstöcke kahl und die Feigenbäume abgestorben. Die Heuschrecken haben die Rinde abgenagt bis auf das nackte, weiße Holz.
8 Weint und klagt wie eine junge Frau, die um ihren Bräutigam Trauer trägt! 9-10 Die Felder sind eine trostlose Wüste, der Boden ist ausgetrocknet. Es gibt kein Getreide, keinen Most und kein Öl mehr, darum können im Tempel keine Speise- und Trankopfer dargebracht werden. Trauer erfüllt die Priester, die Diener des Herrn.
11 Seid entsetzt, ihr Bauern! Klagt und weint, ihr Winzer! Ihr könnt keinen Weizen und keine Gerste mehr ernten. 12 Die Weinstöcke und Feigenbäume sind nur noch kahles Gestrüpp; Dattelpalmen, Apfel- und Granatapfelbäume sind verdorrt und vertrocknet, genauso wie alle wild wachsenden Bäume im Land. Mit ihnen ist auch alle Freude der Menschen dahin.
13 Legt Trauergewänder an, ihr Priester Gottes! Jammert und klagt, die ihr den Dienst am Altar verrichtet! Zieht auch in der Nacht die Trauerkleidung nicht aus, denn am Tempel gibt es nichts zu opfern, keine Speise- und keine Trankopfer mehr. 14 Ruft die Menschen zum Fasten auf! Sie sollen sich alle zum Gottesdienst versammeln! Die führenden Männer und das ganze Volk sollen zum Tempel des Herrn, eures Gottes, kommen und laut zu ihm um Hilfe schreien!
15 Ein Tag des Schreckens wartet auf uns! Denn jetzt naht der Gerichtstag des Herrn! Der Allmächtige kommt, um uns ins Verderben zu stürzen. 16 Wir haben nichts mehr zu essen, vor unseren Augen wurde die Ernte vernichtet. Nun herrschen auch im Haus unseres Gottes kein Jubel und keine Freude mehr. 17 Die Saatkörner liegen ausgedörrt in der Erde, die Vorratsspeicher stehen leer, die Scheunen verfallen, weil alles Korn vertrocknet ist. 18 Das Vieh schreit nach Futter, die Rinder irren umher, denn sie können keine Weide mehr finden; auch die Schafe gehen elend zugrunde.
19 Zu dir, Herr, rufe ich! Ein Feuer hat das Gras verzehrt und die Bäume versengt. 20 Die Tiere in der Steppe lechzen nach Wasser, sie schreien zu dir um Hilfe! Die Bäche sind versiegt und die Weideplätze verbrannt.

An Invasion of Locusts
2 Hear this,(C) you elders;(D)
listen, all who live in the land.(E)
Has anything like this ever happened in your days
or in the days of your ancestors?(F)
3 Tell it to your children,(G)
and let your children tell it to their children,
and their children to the next generation.(H)
4 What the locust(I) swarm has left
the great locusts have eaten;
what the great locusts have left
the young locusts have eaten;
what the young locusts have left(J)
other locusts[a] have eaten.(K)
5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep!
Wail, all you drinkers of wine;(L)
wail because of the new wine,
for it has been snatched(M) from your lips.
6 A nation has invaded my land,
a mighty army without number;(N)
it has the teeth(O) of a lion,
the fangs of a lioness.
7 It has laid waste(P) my vines
and ruined my fig trees.(Q)
It has stripped off their bark
and thrown it away,
leaving their branches white.
8 Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth(R)
grieving for the betrothed of her youth.
9 Grain offerings and drink offerings(S)
are cut off from the house of the Lord.
The priests are in mourning,(T)
those who minister before the Lord.
10 The fields are ruined,
the ground is dried up;(U)
the grain is destroyed,
the new wine(V) is dried up,
the olive oil fails.(W)
11 Despair, you farmers,(X)
wail, you vine growers;
grieve for the wheat and the barley,(Y)
because the harvest of the field is destroyed.(Z)
12 The vine is dried up
and the fig tree is withered;(AA)
the pomegranate,(AB) the palm and the apple[b] tree—
all the trees of the field—are dried up.(AC)
Surely the people’s joy
is withered away.
A Call to Lamentation
13 Put on sackcloth,(AD) you priests, and mourn;
wail, you who minister(AE) before the altar.
Come, spend the night in sackcloth,
you who minister before my God;
for the grain offerings and drink offerings(AF)
are withheld from the house of your God.
14 Declare a holy fast;(AG)
call a sacred assembly.
Summon the elders
and all who live in the land(AH)
to the house of the Lord your God,
and cry out(AI) to the Lord.(AJ)
15 Alas for that(AK) day!
For the day of the Lord(AL) is near;
it will come like destruction from the Almighty.[c](AM)
16 Has not the food been cut off(AN)
before our very eyes—
joy and gladness(AO)
from the house of our God?(AP)
17 The seeds are shriveled
beneath the clods.[d](AQ)
The storehouses are in ruins,
the granaries have been broken down,
for the grain has dried up.
18 How the cattle moan!
The herds mill about
because they have no pasture;(AR)
even the flocks of sheep are suffering.(AS)

2 Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?
3 Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.
4 That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten.
5 Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.
6 For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.
7 He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.
8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
9 The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the Lord; the priests, the Lord's ministers, mourn.
10 The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.
11 Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.
12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.
13 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.
14 Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the Lord your God, and cry unto the Lord,
15 Alas for the day! for the day of the Lord is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
16 Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God?
17 The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.
18 How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.
19 O Lord, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.
20 The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

The Land Laid Waste(B)
2 Hear this, you elders,
And give ear, all you inhabitants of the land!
(C)Has anything like this happened in your days,
Or even in the days of your fathers?
3 (D)Tell your children about it,
Let your children tell their children,
And their children another generation.
4 (E)What the chewing [a]locust left, the (F)swarming locust has eaten;
What the swarming locust left, the crawling locust has eaten;
And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten.
5 Awake, you (G)drunkards, and weep;
And wail, all you drinkers of wine,
Because of the new wine,
(H)For it has been cut off from your mouth.
6 For (I)a nation has come up against My land,
Strong, and without number;
(J)His teeth are the teeth of a lion,

Mourning for the Land
13 (U)Gird yourselves and lament, you priests;
Wail, you who minister before the altar;
Come, lie all night in sackcloth,
You who minister to my God;
For the grain offering and the drink offering
Are withheld from the house of your God.
14 (V)Consecrate a fast,
Call (W)a sacred assembly;
Gather the elders
And (X)all the inhabitants of the land
Into the house of the Lord your God,
And cry out to the Lord.
15 (Y)Alas for the day!
For (Z)the day of the Lord is at hand;
It shall come as destruction from the Almighty.
16 Is not the food (AA)cut off before our eyes,
(AB)Joy and gladness from the house of our God?
17 The seed shrivels under the clods,
Storehouses are in shambles;
Barns are broken down,
For the grain has withered.
18 How (AC)the animals groan!
The herds of cattle are restless,
