14 (A)Consecrate a fast,
Call (B)a sacred assembly;
Gather the elders
And (C)all the inhabitants of the land
Into the house of the Lord your God,
And cry out to the Lord.

15 (D)Alas for the day!
For (E)the day of the Lord is at hand;
It shall come as destruction from the Almighty.
16 Is not the food (F)cut off before our eyes,
(G)Joy and gladness from the house of our God?
17 The seed shrivels under the clods,
Storehouses are in shambles;
Barns are broken down,
For the grain has withered.
18 How (H)the animals groan!
The herds of cattle are restless,
Because they have no pasture;
Even the flocks of sheep [a]suffer punishment.

19 O Lord, (I)to You I cry out;
For (J)fire has devoured the [b]open pastures,
And a flame has burned all the trees of the field.
20 The beasts of the field also (K)cry out to You,
For (L)the water brooks are dried up,
And fire has devoured the [c]open pastures.

29 (A)If your right eye causes you to [a]sin, (B)pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to [b]sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Marriage Is Sacred and Binding(C)

31 “Furthermore it has been said, (D)‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that (E)whoever divorces his wife for any reason except [c]sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

Jesus Forbids Oaths

33 “Again you have heard that (F)it was said to those of [d]old, (G)‘You shall not swear falsely, but (H)shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, (I)do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is (J)God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of (K)the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 (L)But let [e]your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

Go the Second Mile(M)

38 “You have heard that it was said, (N)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 (O)But I tell you not to resist an evil person. (P)But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever (Q)compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and (R)from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

Love Your Enemies(S)

43 “You have heard that it was said, (T)‘You shall love your neighbor (U)and hate your enemy.’ 44 [f]But I say to you, (V)love your enemies, bless those who curse you, (W)do good to those who hate you, and pray (X)for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for (Y)He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 (Z)For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your [g]brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the [h]tax collectors do so? 48 (AA)Therefore you shall be perfect, just (AB)as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Peter Defends God’s Grace

11 Now the apostles and brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, (A)those of the circumcision contended with him, saying, (B)“You went in to uncircumcised men (C)and ate with them!”

But Peter explained it to them (D)in order from the beginning, saying: (E)“I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object descending like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came to me. When I observed it intently and considered, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘Not so, Lord! For nothing common or unclean has at any time entered my mouth.’ But the voice answered me again from heaven, ‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.’ 10 Now this was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven. 11 At that very moment, three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent to me from Caesarea. 12 Then (F)the Spirit told me to go with them, doubting nothing. Moreover (G)these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. 13 (H)And he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house, who said to him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon whose surname is Peter, 14 who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’ 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, (I)as upon us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, (J)‘John indeed baptized with water, but (K)you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 (L)If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, (M)who was I that I could withstand God?”

18 When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, (N)“Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”
