The Lord Had Pity

18 (A)Then the Lord became jealous for his land
    (B)and had pity on his people.
19 The Lord answered and said to his people,
“Behold, (C)I am sending to you
    grain, wine, and oil,
    (D)and you will be satisfied;
and I will no more make you
    a reproach among the nations.

20 “I will remove the northerner far from you,
    and drive him into a parched and desolate land,
his vanguard[a] into (E)the eastern sea,
    and his rear guard[b] into (F)the western sea;
(G)the stench and foul smell of him will rise,
    for he has done great things.

21 “Fear not, O land;
    be glad and rejoice,
    for (H)the Lord has done great things!
22 Fear not, (I)you beasts of the field,
    for (J)the pastures of the wilderness are green;
(K)the tree bears its fruit;
    the fig tree and (L)vine give their full yield.

23 (M)“Be glad, O children of Zion,
    and (N)rejoice in the Lord your God,
for he has given (O)the early rain for your vindication;
    he has poured down for you abundant rain,
    (P)the early and (Q)the latter rain, as before.

24 “The threshing floors shall be full of grain;
    the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 I will restore[c] to you the years
    that (R)the swarming locust has eaten,
(S)the hopper, (T)the destroyer, and (U)the cutter,
    (V)my great army, which I sent among you.

26 (W)“You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
    and praise the name of the Lord your God,
    who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people (X)shall never again be put to shame.
27 (Y)You shall know that I am (Z)in the midst of Israel,
    and that (AA)I am the Lord your God (AB)and there is none else.
And my people (AC)shall never again be put to shame.

The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit

28 [d] (AD)“And it shall come to pass afterward,
    that (AE)I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
(AF)your sons and (AG)your daughters shall prophesy,
    your old men shall dream dreams,
    and your young men shall see visions.
29 (AH)Even on the male and female servants
    in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

30 “And I will show (AI)wonders in the heavens and (AJ)on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 (AK)The sun shall be turned to darkness, (AL)and the moon to blood, (AM)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that (AN)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (AO)For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among (AP)the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

The Lord Will Give Earthly Blessings to His People

18 Then the Lord became concerned about his land,
and he had pity on his people.
19 The Lord said to his people,
“I am going to send grain, new wine, and olive oil to you.
You will be satisfied with them.
I will no longer make you a disgrace among the nations.

20 “I will keep the northern ⌞army⌟ far from you,
and I will force it into a dry and barren land.
The soldiers in front will be forced into the eastern sea.
The soldiers in back will be forced into the western sea.
A foul odor will rise from the dead bodies.
They will stink.”

He has done great things!
21 Land, do not be afraid.
Be glad and rejoice.
The Lord has done great things!
22 Wild animals, do not be afraid.
The pastures in the wilderness have turned green.
The trees have produced their fruit.
There are plenty of figs and grapes.
23 People of Zion, be glad and find joy in the Lord your God.
The Lord has given you the Teacher of Righteousness.[a]
He has sent the autumn rain and the spring rain as before.
24 The threshing floors [b] will be filled with grain.
The vats will overflow with new wine and olive oil.

25 “Then I will repay you for the years
that the mature locusts, the adult locusts,
the grasshoppers, and the young locusts ate your crops.
(They are the large army that I sent against you.)
26 You will have plenty to eat, and you will be full.
You will praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has performed miracles for you.
My people will never be ashamed again.
27 You will know that I am in Israel.
I am the Lord your God, and there is no other.
My people will never be ashamed again.[c]

The Lord Will Pour His Spirit on All People

28 “After this, I will pour my Spirit on everyone.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your old men will dream dreams.
Your young men will see visions.
29 In those days I will pour my Spirit on servants,
on both men and women.
30 I will work miracles in the sky and on the earth:
blood, fire, and clouds of smoke.
31 The sun will become dark,
and the moon will become as red as blood before the terrifying day of the Lord comes.”

32 Then whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Those who escape will be on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem.
Among the survivors will be those whom the Lord calls,
as the Lord has promised.

  3. 2:27 Joel 2:28–32 in English Bibles is Joel 3:1–5 in the Hebrew Bible.

The Mystery of Israel's Salvation

25 (A)Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers:[a] (B)a partial hardening has come upon Israel, (C)until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,

(D)“The Deliverer will come (E)from Zion,
    he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;
27 “and this will be my (F)covenant with them
    (G)when I take away their sins.”

28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are (H)beloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29 For the gifts and (I)the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For just as (J)you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now[b] receive mercy. 32 For God (K)has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and (L)wisdom and knowledge of God! (M)How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34 “For (N)who has known the mind of the Lord,
    or (O)who has been his counselor?”
35 “Or (P)who has given a gift to him
    that he might be repaid?”

36 For (Q)from him and through him and to him are all things. (R)To him be glory forever. Amen.

A Living Sacrifice

12 (S)I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[c] by the mercies of God, (T)to present your bodies (U)as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.[d] (V)Do not be conformed to this world,[e] but be transformed by (W)the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may (X)discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.[f]

Gifts of Grace

For (Y)by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (Z)not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, (AA)each according to (AB)the measure of faith that God has assigned. For (AC)as in one body we have many members,[g] and the members do not all have the same function, so we, (AD)though many, (AE)are one body in Christ, and individually (AF)members one of another. (AG)Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if (AH)prophecy, (AI)in proportion to our faith; if (AJ)service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; (AK)the one who leads,[h] with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with (AL)cheerfulness.

Marks of the True Christian

(AM)Let love be genuine. (AN)Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 (AO)Love one another with brotherly affection. (AP)Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, (AQ)be fervent in spirit,[i] (AR)serve the Lord. 12 (AS)Rejoice in hope, (AT)be patient in tribulation, (AU)be constant in prayer. 13 (AV)Contribute to the needs of the saints and (AW)seek to show hospitality.

25 Brothers and sisters, I want you to understand this mystery so that you won’t become arrogant. The minds of some Israelites have become closed until all of God’s non-Jewish people are included. 26 In this way Israel as a whole will be saved, as Scripture says,

“The Savior will come from Zion.
He will remove godlessness from Jacob.
27 My promise [a] to them will be fulfilled
when I take away their sins.”

28 The Good News made the Jewish people enemies because of you. But by God’s choice they are loved because of their ancestors. 29 God never changes his mind when he gives gifts or when he calls someone. 30 In the past, you disobeyed God. But now God has been merciful to you because of the disobedience of the Jewish people. 31 In the same way, the Jewish people have also disobeyed so that God may be merciful to them as he was to you. 32 God has placed all people into the prison of their own disobedience so that he could be merciful to all people.

33 God’s riches, wisdom, and knowledge are so deep
that it is impossible to explain his decisions
or to understand his ways.
34 “Who knows how the Lord thinks?
Who can become his adviser?”
35 Who gave the Lord something
which the Lord must pay back?
36 Everything is from him and by him and for him.
Glory belongs to him forever! Amen!

Dedicate Your Lives to God

12 Brothers and sisters, in view of all we have just shared about God’s compassion, I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him. This kind of worship is appropriate for you. Don’t become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants—what is good, pleasing, and perfect.

Because of the kindness [b] that God has shown me, I ask you not to think of yourselves more highly than you should. Instead, your thoughts should lead you to use good judgment based on what God has given each of you as believers. Our bodies have many parts, but these parts don’t all do the same thing. In the same way, even though we are many individuals, Christ makes us one body and individuals who are connected to each other. God in his kindness gave each of us different gifts. If your gift is speaking what God has revealed, make sure what you say agrees with the Christian faith. If your gift is serving, then devote yourself to serving. If it is teaching, devote yourself to teaching. If it is encouraging others, devote yourself to giving encouragement. If it is sharing, be generous. If it is leadership, lead enthusiastically. If it is helping people in need, help them cheerfully.

Love sincerely. Hate evil. Hold on to what is good. 10 Be devoted to each other like a loving family. Excel in showing respect for each other. 11 Don’t be lazy in showing your devotion. Use your energy to serve the Lord. 12 Be happy in your confidence, be patient in trouble, and pray continually. 13 Share what you have with God’s people who are in need. Be hospitable.

25 Ибо не хочу оставить вас, братия, в неведении о тайне сей, --чтобы вы не мечтали о себе, --что ожесточение произошло в Израиле отчасти, [до времени], пока войдет полное [число] язычников;

И как, по данной нам благодати, имеем различные дарования, [то], [имеешь ли] пророчество, [пророчествуй] по мере веры;

[имеешь ли] служение, [пребывай] в служении; учитель ли, --в учении;

Любовь [да будет] непритворна; отвращайтесь зла, прилепляйтесь к добру;

10 будьте братолюбивы друг к другу с нежностью; в почтительности друг друга предупреждайте;

11 в усердии не ослабевайте; духом пламенейте; Господу служите;

12 утешайтесь надеждою; в скорби [будьте] терпеливы, в молитве постоянны;
