Job’s Third Speech: A Response to Bildad
9 Then Job spoke again:
2 “Yes, I know all this is true in principle.
But how can a person be declared innocent in God’s sight?
3 If someone wanted to take God to court,[a]
would it be possible to answer him even once in a thousand times?
4 For God is so wise and so mighty.
Who has ever challenged him successfully?
5 “Without warning, he moves the mountains,
overturning them in his anger.
6 He shakes the earth from its place,
and its foundations tremble.
7 If he commands it, the sun won’t rise
and the stars won’t shine.
8 He alone has spread out the heavens
and marches on the waves of the sea.
9 He made all the stars—the Bear and Orion,
the Pleiades and the constellations of the southern sky.
10 He does great things too marvelous to understand.
He performs countless miracles.
11 “Yet when he comes near, I cannot see him.
When he moves by, I do not see him go.
12 If he snatches someone in death, who can stop him?
Who dares to ask, ‘What are you doing?’
13 And God does not restrain his anger.
Even the monsters of the sea[b] are crushed beneath his feet.
14 “So who am I, that I should try to answer God
or even reason with him?
15 Even if I were right, I would have no defense.
I could only plead for mercy.
16 And even if I summoned him and he responded,
I’m not sure he would listen to me.
17 For he attacks me with a storm
and repeatedly wounds me without cause.
18 He will not let me catch my breath,
but fills me instead with bitter sorrows.
19 If it’s a question of strength, he’s the strong one.
If it’s a matter of justice, who dares to summon him[c] to court?
20 Though I am innocent, my own mouth would pronounce me guilty.
Though I am blameless, it[d] would prove me wicked.
21 “I am innocent,
but it makes no difference to me—
I despise my life.
22 Innocent or wicked, it is all the same to God.
That’s why I say, ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’
23 When a plague[e] sweeps through,
he laughs at the death of the innocent.
24 The whole earth is in the hands of the wicked,
and God blinds the eyes of the judges.
If he’s not the one who does it, who is?
25 “My life passes more swiftly than a runner.
It flees away without a glimpse of happiness.
26 It disappears like a swift papyrus boat,
like an eagle swooping down on its prey.
27 If I decided to forget my complaints,
to put away my sad face and be cheerful,
28 I would still dread all the pain,
for I know you will not find me innocent, O God.
29 Whatever happens, I will be found guilty.
So what’s the use of trying?
30 Even if I were to wash myself with soap
and clean my hands with lye,
31 you would plunge me into a muddy ditch,
and my own filthy clothing would hate me.
32 “God is not a mortal like me,
so I cannot argue with him or take him to trial.
33 If only there were a mediator between us,
someone who could bring us together.
34 The mediator could make God stop beating me,
and I would no longer live in terror of his punishment.
35 Then I could speak to him without fear,
but I cannot do that in my own strength.

9 Then Job replied:
2 “Indeed, I know that this is true.
But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?(A)
3 Though they wished to dispute with him,(B)
they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.(C)
4 His wisdom(D) is profound, his power is vast.(E)
Who has resisted(F) him and come out unscathed?(G)
5 He moves mountains(H) without their knowing it
and overturns them in his anger.(I)
6 He shakes the earth(J) from its place
and makes its pillars tremble.(K)
7 He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;(L)
he seals off the light of the stars.(M)
8 He alone stretches out the heavens(N)
and treads on the waves of the sea.(O)
9 He is the Maker(P) of the Bear[a] and Orion,
the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.(Q)
10 He performs wonders(R) that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted.(S)
11 When he passes me, I cannot see him;
when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.(T)
12 If he snatches away, who can stop him?(U)
Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’(V)
13 God does not restrain his anger;(W)
even the cohorts of Rahab(X) cowered at his feet.
14 “How then can I dispute with him?
How can I find words to argue with him?(Y)
15 Though I were innocent, I could not answer him;(Z)
I could only plead(AA) with my Judge(AB) for mercy.(AC)
16 Even if I summoned him and he responded,
I do not believe he would give me a hearing.(AD)
17 He would crush me(AE) with a storm(AF)
and multiply(AG) my wounds for no reason.(AH)
18 He would not let me catch my breath
but would overwhelm me with misery.(AI)
19 If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty!(AJ)
And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge him[b]?(AK)
20 Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me;
if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.(AL)
21 “Although I am blameless,(AM)
I have no concern for myself;(AN)
I despise my own life.(AO)
22 It is all the same; that is why I say,
‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’(AP)
23 When a scourge(AQ) brings sudden death,
he mocks the despair of the innocent.(AR)
24 When a land falls into the hands of the wicked,(AS)
he blindfolds its judges.(AT)
If it is not he, then who is it?(AU)
25 “My days are swifter than a runner;(AV)
they fly away without a glimpse of joy.(AW)
26 They skim past(AX) like boats of papyrus,(AY)
like eagles swooping down on their prey.(AZ)
27 If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,(BA)
I will change my expression, and smile,’
28 I still dread(BB) all my sufferings,
for I know you will not hold me innocent.(BC)
29 Since I am already found guilty,
why should I struggle in vain?(BD)
30 Even if I washed myself with soap(BE)
and my hands(BF) with cleansing powder,(BG)
31 you would plunge me into a slime pit(BH)
so that even my clothes would detest me.(BI)
32 “He is not a mere mortal(BJ) like me that I might answer him,(BK)
that we might confront each other in court.(BL)
33 If only there were someone to mediate between us,(BM)
someone to bring us together,(BN)
34 someone to remove God’s rod from me,(BO)
so that his terror would frighten me no more.(BP)
35 Then I would speak up without fear of him,(BQ)
but as it now stands with me, I cannot.(BR)

9 Then Job answered:

who has resisted him and succeeded?(C)
5 He removes mountains, and they do not know it
when he overturns them in his anger;

7 he commands the sun, and it does not rise;
he seals up the stars;
8 he alone stretched out the heavens
and trampled the waves of the Sea;[a](E)
9 he made the Bear and Orion,
the Pleiades and the chambers of the south;(F)
10 he does great things beyond understanding
and marvelous things without number.(G)
11 Look, he passes by me, and I do not see him;
he moves on, but I do not perceive him.(H)
12 He snatches away; who can stop him?
Who will say to him, ‘What are you doing?’(I)
13 “God will not turn back his anger;
the helpers of Rahab bowed beneath him.(J)
14 How then can I answer him,
choosing my words with him?
15 Though I am innocent, I cannot answer him;
I must appeal to my accuser for my right.(K)
16 If I summoned him and he answered me,
I do not believe that he would listen to my voice.
17 For he crushes me with a tempest
and multiplies my wounds without cause;(L)
18 he will not let me get my breath
but fills me with bitterness.(M)
19 If it is a contest of strength, he is the strong one!
If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him?[b]
20 Though I am innocent, my own mouth would condemn me;
though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse.
21 I am blameless; I do not know myself;
I loathe my life.(N)
22 It is all one; therefore I say,

24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked;
he covers the eyes of its judges—
if it is not he, who then is it?(Q)
25 “My days are swifter than a runner;
they flee away; they see no good.
26 They go by like skiffs of reed,
like an eagle swooping on the prey.(R)
27 If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint;
I will put off my sad countenance and be of good cheer,’
28 I become afraid of all my suffering,
for I know you will not hold me innocent.
29 I shall be condemned;
why then do I labor in vain?(S)
30 If I wash myself with soap
and cleanse my hands with lye,(T)
31 yet you will plunge me into filth,
and my own clothes will abhor me.
32 For he is not a mortal, as I am, that I might answer him,
that we should come to trial together.(U)
33 There is no mediator[d] between us,
who might lay his hand on us both.(V)
34 If he would take his rod away from me
and not let dread of him terrify me,(W)
35 then I would speak without fear of him,
for I know I am not what I am thought to be.[e]

9 Alors Job prit la parole et dit :
2 Oui, certes, je le sais, ╵il en est bien ainsi :
comment un homme ╵serait-il juste devant Dieu[a] ?
3 Qui donc s’aviserait ╵de plaider contre lui ?
Même une fois sur mille, ╵il ne pourra répondre[b].
4 Dieu est riche en sagesse, ╵et puissante est sa force.
Qui pourrait le braver ╵et s’en sortir indemne ?
5 Lui qui déplace les montagnes ╵sans qu’elles ne s’en doutent
et les renverse en sa colère,
6 il fait trembler la terre ╵jusqu’en ses fondations :
ses colonnes chancellent.
7 Il ordonne au soleil ╵de ne pas se lever[c],
et met sous scellés les étoiles.
8 Lui seul déploie le ciel
et marche sur la mer, ╵sur ses plus hautes vagues.
9 Il a fait la Grande Ourse, ╵Orion et les Pléiades[d],
et les constellations australes.
10 Il accomplit des œuvres ╵grandioses, insondables,
et des prodiges innombrables[e].
11 S’il passait près de moi, ╵je ne le verrais pas,
puis il s’éloignerait, ╵je ne m’en apercevrais pas.
12 Qui peut lui retirer ╵la proie qu’il prend de force ?
Qui osera lui dire : ╵« Que fais-tu là ? »
13 Dieu ne retient pas sa colère.
Et devant lui s’effondrent ╵tous les appuis de l’orgueilleux[f].
14 Combien moins oserais-je ╵lui donner la réplique,
et quels mots choisirais-je ╵pour plaider avec lui ?
15 Même si je suis juste, ╵je ne peux rien répondre.
Je ne puis qu’implorer ╵la pitié de mon juge.
16 Si même, à mon appel, ╵il daignait me répondre,
je ne pourrais quand même ╵pas croire qu’il m’écoute,
17 car il m’a assailli ╵par un vent de tempête,
il a multiplié ╵mes blessures sans cause.
18 Il ne me permet pas ╵de reprendre mon souffle,
tant il me rassasie de fiel.
19 Recourir à la force ? ╵Mais il est le plus fort.
Ou faire appel au droit ? ╵Qui donc l’assignera[g] ?
20 Si j’étais juste, ╵ma bouche même me condamnerait.
Si j’étais innocent, ╵ma bouche me donnerait tort.
21 Suis-je vraiment intègre ? ╵Je ne sais où j’en suis :
je méprise ma vie.
22 Que m’importe, après tout ! ╵C’est pourquoi j’ose dire :
« Il détruit aussi bien ╵l’innocent que l’impie. »
23 Quand survient un fléau ╵qui tue soudainement,
Dieu se rit des épreuves ╵qui atteignent les justes.
24 Quand il livre un pays ╵au pouvoir des méchants,
il en aveugle tous les juges.
Et si ce n’est pas lui, ╵alors, qui est-ce donc ?
25 Mes jours ont fui plus vite ╵qu’un agile coureur,
ils se sont écoulés, ╵mais sans voir le bonheur,
26 ils ont glissé, rapides ╵comme un esquif de jonc[h],
comme le vol d’un aigle ╵qui fonce sur sa proie.
27 Si même je me dis : ╵« Laisse donc de côté ta plainte,
va, change de visage, ╵ressaisis-toi ! »,
28 je redoute tous mes tourments
car je sais bien ╵que tu ne me traiteras pas ╵en innocent.
29 Je serai tenu pour coupable !
Alors, pourquoi devrais-je ╵me donner tant de peine en vain ?
30 J’aurais beau me laver ╵avec de l’eau de neige,
oui, j’aurais beau me nettoyer ╵les mains avec de la potasse[i],
31 toi tu me plongerais ╵dans un bourbier fangeux
pour que mes habits mêmes ╵me prennent en horreur.
32 Car il n’est pas ╵un homme comme moi, ╵pour que je lui réplique
ou pour que nous comparaissions ╵ensemble au tribunal.
33 Il n’y a pas[j] d’arbitre ╵pouvant s’interposer
et trancher entre nous,
34 qui détournerait de moi son bâton
pour que les terreurs qu’il me cause ╵ne m’épouvantent plus !
35 Alors je parlerai ╵sans avoir peur de lui.
Mais ce n’est pas le cas, ╵je suis tout seul avec moi-même !
