Job antwoordt Bildad

9 Maar Job antwoordde:

2 Jazeker, ik weet wel dat dat zo is.
Hoe zou een mens gelijk kunnen hebben tegenover God?
3 Als je met God van mening zou verschillen,
zou je Hem op nog niet één van duizend vragen antwoord kunnen geven.
4 God is zo wijs en machtig!
Wie zou zich tegen God kunnen verzetten en in leven blijven?

5 God verplaatst bergen zonder dat een mens het merkt.
Als Hij kwaad is, keert Hij ze om.
6 Hij laat de aarde beven op haar fundamenten.
Haar fundamenten schudt Hij.
7 Als Hij het beveelt, gaat de zon niet op.
Als Hij het zegt, geven de sterren geen licht.
8 Hij zet helemaal alleen de hemel neer boven de aarde.
Hij loopt over de hoge golven van de zee.
9 Hij zet de sterrenbeelden aan de hemel:
de Grote Beer en de Orion, de Plejaden en de sterrenbeelden in het zuiden.
10 Hij doet geweldige, onbegrijpelijke dingen.
Hij doet ontelbare wonderen.
11 Als Hij langs mij heen loopt, zie ik Hem niet.
Als Hij voorbij komt, merk ik er niets van.
12 Als Hij iemand wegrukt uit het leven,
wie zal Hem dan tegenhouden?
Wie zal tegen Hem zeggen: "Wat doet U daar?"
13 God verbergt zijn boosheid niet.
Zelfs de meest trotse mensen moeten Hem gehoorzamen.
14 Hoe zou ik Hem dan kunnen antwoorden?
Wat zou ik tegen Hem moeten zeggen?
15 Zelfs als ik gelijk had, zou ik niet weten wat ik Hem moest antwoorden.
Nee, ik zou mijn Rechter om genade smeken.
16 Als ik Hem om hulp zou roepen en Hij mij zou antwoorden,
zou ik niet kunnen geloven dat Hij mij werkelijk gehoord had.

17 Hij verplettert mij in de storm van zijn woede.
Hij maakt mij steeds zieker, zonder dat Hij daar een reden voor heeft.
18 Geen moment kan ik even op adem komen.
Ramp op ramp stort Hij over mij uit.
19 Als het er om zou gaan wie er het sterkste is, dan is Hij dat.
En als het er om zou gaan wie er gelijk heeft,
wie zal mij dan de kans geven om mezelf bij Hem te verdedigen?
20 Ik durf niet te beweren dat ik onschuldig ben.
Zelfs als ik onschuldig was, zou Hij toch iets vinden om mij te veroordelen.
21 Zelfs als ik denk dat ik niets verkeerds gedaan heb, durf ik dat niet hardop te zeggen.
Ik vind mezelf niets waard.
22 Maar het maakt allemaal niets uit.
Daarom zeg ik:
Hij doodt iedereen: onschuldige én schuldige mensen.
23 Hij stort rampen uit over onschuldige mensen.
Hij trekt zich niets aan van hun wanhoop.
24 Híj heeft de aarde in de macht gegeven
van mensen die zich niets van Hem aantrekken.
Híj maakt de rechters blind voor de waarheid.
Als Híj het niet is die dat doet, wie doet het dan?

25 Sneller dan een snelle ruiter te paard gaan mijn dagen voorbij.
Ze zijn voorbij gegaan zonder dat er één goede dag bij was.
26 Ze glijden voorbij als snelle schepen,
snel als een arend die neerduikt op zijn prooi.
27 Als ik probeer mijn verdriet te vergeten
en mijn best doe om weer blij te kijken,
28 dan lukt me dat niet door al mijn verdriet.
Ik weet dat U vindt dat ik schuldig ben.
29 Ik móet wel schuldig zijn.
Waarom zou ik me dan moe maken
met proberen te bewijzen dat ik ónschuldig ben?
30 Al zou ik mij met het zuiverste water wassen
en mijn handen wassen met de sterkste zeep,
31 dan nog zou U mij in een modderpoel gooien
zodat zelfs mijn kleren van mij zouden walgen.
32 Want Hij is niet zoals ik.
Hij is geen mens die ik zou kunnen antwoorden:
"Laten we samen naar de rechter gaan."
33 Was er maar een scheidsrechter tussen Hem en mij.
Die zou ons wel uit elkaar halen.
34 Dan zou Hij mij niet meer kunnen slaan
en mij niets meer doen.
35 Dan zou ik kunnen spreken zonder bang voor Hem te hoeven zijn.
Maar nu kan ik dat niet. (lees verder)

9 Then Job replied:

2 “Indeed, I know that this is true.
    But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?(A)
3 Though they wished to dispute with him,(B)
    they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.(C)
4 His wisdom(D) is profound, his power is vast.(E)
    Who has resisted(F) him and come out unscathed?(G)
5 He moves mountains(H) without their knowing it
    and overturns them in his anger.(I)
6 He shakes the earth(J) from its place
    and makes its pillars tremble.(K)
7 He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;(L)
    he seals off the light of the stars.(M)
8 He alone stretches out the heavens(N)
    and treads on the waves of the sea.(O)
9 He is the Maker(P) of the Bear[a] and Orion,
    the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.(Q)
10 He performs wonders(R) that cannot be fathomed,
    miracles that cannot be counted.(S)
11 When he passes me, I cannot see him;
    when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.(T)
12 If he snatches away, who can stop him?(U)
    Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’(V)
13 God does not restrain his anger;(W)
    even the cohorts of Rahab(X) cowered at his feet.

14 “How then can I dispute with him?
    How can I find words to argue with him?(Y)
15 Though I were innocent, I could not answer him;(Z)
    I could only plead(AA) with my Judge(AB) for mercy.(AC)
16 Even if I summoned him and he responded,
    I do not believe he would give me a hearing.(AD)
17 He would crush me(AE) with a storm(AF)
    and multiply(AG) my wounds for no reason.(AH)
18 He would not let me catch my breath
    but would overwhelm me with misery.(AI)
19 If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty!(AJ)
    And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge him[b]?(AK)
20 Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me;
    if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.(AL)

21 “Although I am blameless,(AM)
    I have no concern for myself;(AN)
    I despise my own life.(AO)
22 It is all the same; that is why I say,
    ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’(AP)
23 When a scourge(AQ) brings sudden death,
    he mocks the despair of the innocent.(AR)
24 When a land falls into the hands of the wicked,(AS)
    he blindfolds its judges.(AT)
    If it is not he, then who is it?(AU)

25 “My days are swifter than a runner;(AV)
    they fly away without a glimpse of joy.(AW)
26 They skim past(AX) like boats of papyrus,(AY)
    like eagles swooping down on their prey.(AZ)
27 If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,(BA)
    I will change my expression, and smile,’
28 I still dread(BB) all my sufferings,
    for I know you will not hold me innocent.(BC)
29 Since I am already found guilty,
    why should I struggle in vain?(BD)
30 Even if I washed myself with soap(BE)
    and my hands(BF) with cleansing powder,(BG)
31 you would plunge me into a slime pit(BH)
    so that even my clothes would detest me.(BI)

32 “He is not a mere mortal(BJ) like me that I might answer him,(BK)
    that we might confront each other in court.(BL)
33 If only there were someone to mediate between us,(BM)
    someone to bring us together,(BN)
34 someone to remove God’s rod from me,(BO)
    so that his terror would frighten me no more.(BP)
35 Then I would speak up without fear of him,(BQ)
    but as it now stands with me, I cannot.(BR)

9 And Job answered, and said,

2 Verily I know, that it is so, and that a man comparisoned to God shall not be made just. (Truly I know, that this is so, and that a man shall not be seen as just, when compared to God.)

3 If he will strive with God, he may not answer to God one for a thousand. (And if he will argue with God, he cannot answer to God one question out of a thousand.)

4 (For) He is wise in heart, and strong in might; who hath against-stood him, and had peace? (who hath stood against him, and hath prevailed?)

5 He bare over hills from one place to another, and they knew not (what had happened); which he destroyed in his strong vengeance (yea, he destroyed them in his strong vengeance).

6 Which stirreth the earth from his place, and the pillars thereof shall shake together. (Who stirreth the earth from its place, and its pillars shall altogether shake.)

7 He commandeth to the sun, and it riseth not; and he closeth (up) the stars, as under a signet.

8 He alone stretcheth forth (the) heavens, and he goeth upon the waves of the sea.

9 He maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Pleiades, that is, the seven stars, and the inner things of the south.

10 He maketh great things, and that may not be sought out, and also wonderful things, of which there is none number.

11 If he cometh to me, I shall not see him; if he goeth away from me, I shall not understand (I shall not know it).

12 If he asketh suddenly (If he suddenly asketh), who shall answer to him? either who may say to him, Why doest thou so?

13 He is God, whose wrath no man may withstand; and under whom they be bowed, that bear the world (who carry the world).

14 How great am I, that I answer to him, and speak by my words with him? (How great am I, that I answer him, and say my words to him?)

15 Which also (I) shall not answer to him, though I have anything just; but I shall beseech my judge to spare me. (Which even though I am just, I shall not answer him; but I shall still beseech my judge to spare me.)

16 And (even) when he hath heard me inwardly calling him, I believe not, that he hath heard my voice.

17 For in a whirlwind he shall all-break me, and he shall multiply my wounds, yea, without cause. (For he shall all-break me with a whirlwind, and he shall multiply my wounds, yea, for no reason.)

18 He granteth not, that my spirit have rest (He granteth not, that I catch my breath), and he filleth me with bitternesses.

19 If strength is sought, he is most strong; and if equity of doom is sought, no man dare yield witnessing for me (and if justice is sought, no one shall dare give testimony for me).

20 If I will make me just, my own mouth shall condemn me; if I shall show me innocent, he shall prove me a shrew. (If I will declare myself just, or right, my own mouth shall condemn me; if I shall declare myself innocent, it shall prove me a depraved man.)

21 Yea, though I be simple, my soul shall not know this same thing; and it shall annoy me of my life. (Yea, though I be without guile, I shall not know it; and my life shall vex my soul.)

22 One thing is, which I spake, he shall waste by death also the innocent (man) and [the] wicked man. (One thing is, which I have always said, that by death he shall surely destroy the innocent and the wicked alike.)

23 If he beateth, slay he once, and laugh he not of the pains of innocent men (and laugh he not at the pains of the innocent).

24 The earth is given into the hands of the wicked; he covereth the face(s) of (the) judges; that if he is not, who therefore is? (and if he did it not, then who did?)

25 My days were swifter than a courier; they fled away, and saw not good.

26 They passed away as [the] ships bearing apples, as an eagle flying to (its) meat (like an eagle flying to its food).

27 When I say, I shall not speak so; I change my face, and I am tormented with sorrow. (If I say, I shall not speak thus; I shall change my face, and shall comfort myself.)

28 I dread all my works, witting that thou sparest not the trespasser. (I fear all that I must suffer, for I know that thou sparest not the trespasser.)

29 And if I am also thus wicked, why have I travailed in vain? (And if I am held to be wicked, then why travail I in vain?)

30 (Even) Though I am washed as with waters of snow, and (even) though mine hands shine as most clean,

31 nevertheless thou shalt dip me in filths, and my clothes shall hold, or show, me abominable.

32 Truly I shall not answer a man, that is like me; neither that may be heard evenly with me in doom. (Truly I shall not be able to answer him, for he is not a man who is like me; nor is he someone who can equally be heard with me in court, or at the judgement.)

33 There is none, that may reprove ever either, and set his hand in both. (There is no one, who can rebuke both of us, or who can put his hand upon both of us.)

34 Do he away his rod from me, and his dread make not me afeared. (Let him take his rod away from me, and let not the fear of him, or his terrors, make me afraid.)

35 I shall speak, and I shall not dread him; for I may not answer dreading. (I shall speak, and I shall not fear him; for I cannot answer if I am afraid.)
