Jobs tredje tale: Et svar til Bildad
9 Job gav Bildad følgende svar:
2 „Du kan have ret i, hvad du siger,
for ingen kan retfærdiggøre sig over for Gud.
3 Hvis man stævnede Gud for retten,
ville man aldrig klare frisag.
4 Hans visdom og magt er grænseløs.
Ingen slipper godt fra at trodse ham.
5 Han flytter bjerge så let som ingenting,
vælter dem omkuld i sin vrede.
6 Han rusker i jorden, så den skælver,
ryster i hele sin grundvold.
7 Han kan befale, at solen ikke skal stå op,
og at stjernerne skal indhylles i mørke.
8 Det var ham, der udspændte himmelbuen,
og han kan gå på havets bølger.
9 Han skabte Storebjørn og Orion,
Syvstjernen og Dyrekredsen.
10 Han udfører utrolige mirakler
og gør talløse undere.
11 Han bevæger sig lydløst og usynligt,
man hverken ser eller hører ham.
12 Han tager, hvad han vil have,
og hvem tør sige: ‚Det må du ikke!’
13 Gud holder ikke sin vrede tilbage,
ingen menneskelig magt kan standse ham.[a]
14 Hvordan skulle jeg kunne forsvare mig,
retfærdiggøre mig overfor ham?
15 Selvom jeg mener, jeg er uskyldig,
kan jeg ikke gå i rette med ham.
Jeg må nøjes med at bede ham om nåde.
16 Hvis jeg stævnede ham for retten,
mon han så ville høre på min klage?
17 Han har udløst en orkan over mig
og givet mig sår på sår uden grund.
18 Jeg har knap tid til at trække vejret,
før jeg oplever nye lidelser.
19 Ingen kan måle sig med ham i styrke.
Hvem har magt til at anklage ham i retten?
20 Selv om jeg måske var uskyldig,
ville min optræden i retten dømme mig.
21 Jeg mener, jeg er uskyldig,
men hvem tør bedømme sig selv?
Mit liv har ikke længere nogen værdi.
22 Derfor siger jeg: ‚Det kan være lige meget nu.
Gud straffer åbenbart uskyldige såvel som skyldige.’
23 Når pisken pludselig slår til,
ignorerer han de uskyldiges fortvivlede råb.
24 Når et land falder i en ond mands magt,
bliver dets dommere blinde for retfærdigheden.
Hvis det ikke er Gud, der står bag,
hvem er det så?
25 Jeg ser dagene passere forbi som en hurtigløber,
de iler af sted uden at give mig nogen glæde.
26 De glider forbi som sivbåde,
som ørne, der haster efter bytte.
27 Hvad nu hvis jeg sagde: ‚Jeg vil glemme min smerte,
tage smilet på og se glad ud.’
28 Ville det mon standse mine lidelser?
Nej, for i dine øjne, oh, Gud, er jeg åbenbart skyldig.
29 Hvis jeg allerede er dømt skyldig,
hvad hjælper det så, at jeg forsvarer mig?
30 Ja, selv om jeg vaskede mit ansigt i sne
og skrubbede mine hænder med skurepulver,
31 ville du dog straks dyppe mig i mudder,
så mit tøj ville skamme sig over mig.
32 Du er jo ikke et menneske som jeg,
derfor kan vi ikke mødes i retten.
33 Var der dog bare en mellemmand,
der kunne skabe forsoning imellem os,
34 en der kunne fjerne Guds straf over mig,
så jeg ikke skulle leve i angst for hans vrede,
35 så jeg kunne tale med Gud uden at frygte.
Men det kan jeg umuligt opnå alene.

9 Then Job answered and said,
2 I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?
5 Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
6 Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
7 Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
8 Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
9 Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
10 Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.
11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
12 Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
13 If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
14 How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
15 Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
16 If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
17 For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
18 He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
19 If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
20 If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
21 Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
22 This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
23 If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
25 Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
26 They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.
27 If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
28 I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.
29 If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?
30 If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
31 Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.
32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
35 Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

9 Then Job replied:
2 “Indeed, I know that this is true.
But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?(A)
3 Though they wished to dispute with him,(B)
they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.(C)
4 His wisdom(D) is profound, his power is vast.(E)
Who has resisted(F) him and come out unscathed?(G)
5 He moves mountains(H) without their knowing it
and overturns them in his anger.(I)
6 He shakes the earth(J) from its place
and makes its pillars tremble.(K)
7 He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;(L)
he seals off the light of the stars.(M)
8 He alone stretches out the heavens(N)
and treads on the waves of the sea.(O)
9 He is the Maker(P) of the Bear[a] and Orion,
the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.(Q)
10 He performs wonders(R) that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted.(S)
11 When he passes me, I cannot see him;
when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.(T)
12 If he snatches away, who can stop him?(U)
Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’(V)
13 God does not restrain his anger;(W)
even the cohorts of Rahab(X) cowered at his feet.
14 “How then can I dispute with him?
How can I find words to argue with him?(Y)
15 Though I were innocent, I could not answer him;(Z)
I could only plead(AA) with my Judge(AB) for mercy.(AC)
16 Even if I summoned him and he responded,
I do not believe he would give me a hearing.(AD)
17 He would crush me(AE) with a storm(AF)
and multiply(AG) my wounds for no reason.(AH)
18 He would not let me catch my breath
but would overwhelm me with misery.(AI)
19 If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty!(AJ)
And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge him[b]?(AK)
20 Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me;
if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.(AL)
21 “Although I am blameless,(AM)
I have no concern for myself;(AN)
I despise my own life.(AO)
22 It is all the same; that is why I say,
‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’(AP)
23 When a scourge(AQ) brings sudden death,
he mocks the despair of the innocent.(AR)
24 When a land falls into the hands of the wicked,(AS)
he blindfolds its judges.(AT)
If it is not he, then who is it?(AU)
25 “My days are swifter than a runner;(AV)
they fly away without a glimpse of joy.(AW)
26 They skim past(AX) like boats of papyrus,(AY)
like eagles swooping down on their prey.(AZ)
27 If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,(BA)
I will change my expression, and smile,’
28 I still dread(BB) all my sufferings,
for I know you will not hold me innocent.(BC)
29 Since I am already found guilty,
why should I struggle in vain?(BD)
30 Even if I washed myself with soap(BE)
and my hands(BF) with cleansing powder,(BG)
31 you would plunge me into a slime pit(BH)
so that even my clothes would detest me.(BI)
32 “He is not a mere mortal(BJ) like me that I might answer him,(BK)
that we might confront each other in court.(BL)
33 If only there were someone to mediate between us,(BM)
someone to bring us together,(BN)
34 someone to remove God’s rod from me,(BO)
so that his terror would frighten me no more.(BP)
35 Then I would speak up without fear of him,(BQ)
but as it now stands with me, I cannot.(BR)
