Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, and said,

“How long will you talk of these things? And how long shall the words of your mouth be as a mighty wind?

“Does God pervert judgment? Or does the Almighty subvert justice?

“If your sons have sinned against Him, and He has sent them into the place of their iniquity,

“if you will seek God early, and pray to the Almighty,

“if you are pure and upright, then surely He will be stirred up. And He will make the habitation of your righteousness peaceful.

“And though your beginning was small, your future shall greatly increase.

“Please inquire, therefore, of the previous age, and prepare yourself to search their fathers.

“(For we are but from yesterday and are ignorant. For our days upon Earth are but a shadow).

10 “Shall they not teach you and tell you and utter the words of their heart?

11 “Can a reed grow without a marsh? Or can the grass grow without water?

12 “Though it is green and not cut down, it shall still wither before any other herb.

13 “So are the paths of all who forget God. And the hypocrite’s hope shall perish.

14 “His confidence also shall be cut off. And his trust shall be as the web of a spider.

15 “He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand. He shall hold himself fast to it, yet it shall not endure.

16 “He is green before the Sun, and his branches spread over his garden.

17 “His roots are wrapped around the heap and are folded around the stones.

18 “If anyone pulls him from his place, it denies him, saying, ‘I have not seen you’.

19 “Behold, he will rejoice by this means, so that others may grow out of the earth.

20 “Behold, God will not cast away an upright man. Nor will He take the wicked by the hand

21 “until He has filled your mouth with laughter, and your lips with joy.

22 “Those who hate you shall be clothed with shame. And the dwelling of the wicked shall not remain.”

Bildad’s Response

Does God Mess Up?

1-7 Bildad from Shuhah was next to speak:

“How can you keep on talking like this?
You’re talking nonsense, and noisy nonsense at that.
Does God mess up?
Does God Almighty ever get things backward?
It’s plain that your children sinned against him—
otherwise, why would God have punished them?
Here’s what you must do—and don’t put it off any longer:
Get down on your knees before God Almighty.
If you’re as innocent and upright as you say,
    it’s not too late—he’ll come running;
he’ll set everything right again, reestablish your fortunes.
Even though you’re not much right now,
you’ll end up better than ever.

To Hang Your Life from One Thin Thread

8-19 “Put the question to our ancestors,
study what they learned from their ancestors.
For we’re newcomers at this, with a lot to learn,
and not too long to learn it.
So why not let the ancients teach you, tell you what’s what,
instruct you in what they knew from experience?
Can mighty pine trees grow tall without soil?
Can luscious tomatoes flourish without water?
Blossoming flowers look beautiful before they’re cut or picked,
but without soil or water they wither more quickly than grass.
That’s what happens to all who forget God—
all their hopes come to nothing.
They hang their life from one thin thread,
they hitch their fate to a spider web.
One jiggle and the thread breaks,
one jab and the web collapses.
Or they’re like weeds springing up in the sunshine,
    invading the garden,
Spreading everywhere, overtaking the flowers,
getting a foothold even in the rocks.
But when the gardener rips them out by the roots,
the garden doesn’t miss them one bit.
The sooner the godless are gone, the better;
then good plants can grow in their place.

20-22 “There’s no way that God will reject a good person,
and there is no way he’ll help a bad one.
God will let you laugh again;
you’ll raise the roof with shouts of joy,
With your enemies thoroughly discredited,
    their house of cards collapsed.”
