8 Bildad de Schuach prit la parole et dit:
2 Jusqu'à quand veux-tu discourir de la sorte, Et les paroles de ta bouche seront-elles un vent impétueux?
3 Dieu renverserait-il le droit? Le Tout Puissant renverserait-il la justice?
4 Si tes fils ont péché contre lui, Il les a livrés à leur péché.
5 Mais toi, si tu as recours à Dieu, Si tu implores le Tout Puissant;
6 Si tu es juste et droit, Certainement alors il veillera sur toi, Et rendra le bonheur à ton innocente demeure;
7 Ton ancienne prospérité semblera peu de chose, Celle qui t'est réservée sera bien plus grande.
8 Interroge ceux des générations passées, Sois attentif à l'expérience de leurs pères.
9 Car nous sommes d'hier, et nous ne savons rien, Nos jours sur la terre ne sont qu'une ombre.
10 Ils t'instruiront, ils te parleront, Ils tireront de leur coeur ces sentences:
11 Le jonc croît-il sans marais? Le roseau croît-il sans humidité?
12 Encore vert et sans qu'on le coupe, Il sèche plus vite que toutes les herbes.
13 Ainsi arrive-t-il à tous ceux qui oublient Dieu, Et l'espérance de l'impie périra.
14 Son assurance est brisée, Son soutien est une toile d'araignée.
15 Il s'appuie sur sa maison, et elle n'est pas ferme; Il s'y cramponne, et elle ne résiste pas.
16 Dans toute sa vigueur, en plein soleil, Il étend ses rameaux sur son jardin,
17 Il entrelace ses racines parmi les pierres, Il pénètre jusque dans les murailles;
18 L'arrache-t-on du lieu qu'il occupe, Ce lieu le renie: Je ne t'ai point connu!
19 Telles sont les délices que ses voies lui procurent. Puis sur le même sol d'autres s'élèvent après lui.
20 Non, Dieu ne rejette point l'homme intègre, Et il ne protège point les méchants.
21 Il remplira ta bouche de cris de joie, Et tes lèvres de chants d'allégresse.
22 Tes ennemis seront couverts de honte; La tente des méchants disparaîtra.

Bildad Claims God Rewards the Good
8 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,
2 “How long will you say these things,
And the (A)words of your mouth be a mighty wind?
3 Does (B)God pervert justice?
Or does [a]the Almighty pervert what is right?
4 (C)If your sons sinned against Him,
Then He sent them into the [b]power of their transgression.
5 If you would (D)seek God earnestly
And plead for the grace of [c]the Almighty,
6 If you are pure and upright,
Indeed now (E)He would rouse Himself for you
And make your righteous (F)abode at peace.
7 Though your beginning was insignificant,
Yet your (G)end will increase greatly.
8 “Please (H)ask of past generations,
And establish the things searched out by their fathers.
9 For we are only of yesterday and know nothing,
Because (I)our days on earth are but a shadow.
10 Will they not instruct you and tell you,
And bring forth words from their hearts?
11 “Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh?
Can the rushes grow without water?
12 While it is still green and not cut down,
Yet it dries up before any other [d]plant.
13 So are the paths of (J)all who forget God;
And the (K)hope of the godless will perish,
14 Whose confidence is fragile,
And whose trust a (L)spider’s [e]web.
15 He relies on his (M)house, but it does not stand;
He holds fast to it, but it is not established.
16 He [f](N)thrives before the sun,
And his (O)shoots go forth over his garden.
17 His roots wrap around a rock pile;
He looks upon a house of stones.
18 If He swallows him up from (P)his place,
Then it will deny him, saying, ‘(Q)I never saw you.’
19 Behold, (R)this is the joy of [g]His way;
And out of the dust others will spring.
20 Behold, (S)God will not reject a blameless man,
Nor (T)will He strengthen the hand of the evildoers.
21 He will yet fill (U)your mouth with laughter
And your lips with shouting.
22 Those who hate you will be (V)clothed with shame,
And the (W)tent of the wicked will be no longer.”

Bildad conferma il castigo per l'empio
8 (A)Allora Bildad di Suac rispose
e disse:
2 «Fino a quando terrai questi discorsi
e saranno le parole della tua bocca
come un vento impetuoso?
3 Potrebbe Dio pervertire il giudizio?
Potrebbe l'Onnipotente pervertire
la giustizia?
4 Se i tuoi figli hanno peccato contro di lui,
egli li ha dati in balía del loro misfatto;
5 ma tu, se ricorri a Dio
e implori l'Onnipotente,
6 se proprio sei puro e integro,
certo egli sorgerà in tuo favore
e restaurerà la tua giusta dimora.
7 Cosí sarà stato piccolo il tuo
principio,
ma la tua fine sarà grande oltre misura.
8 (B)«Interroga le passate generazioni,
rifletti sull'esperienza dei padri;
9 poiché noi siamo di ieri e non
sappiamo nulla;
i nostri giorni sulla terra non sono che un'ombra;
10 ma quelli certo t'insegneranno,
ti parleranno,
e dal loro cuore trarranno discorsi.
11 Può il papiro crescere dove non c'è limo?
Forse il giunco viene su senz'acqua?
12 Mentre sono verdi ancora, e senza che li si tagli,
prima di tutte le erbe, inaridiscono.
13 Tale è la sorte di tutti quelli che
dimenticano Dio;
la speranza dell'empio perirà.
14 La sua baldanza è troncata, la sua fiducia è come una tela di ragno.
15 Egli si appoggia alla sua casa,
ma essa non regge;
vi si aggrappa, ma quella non tiene.
16 Egli verdeggia al sole,
i suoi rami si protendono sul suo
giardino,
17 le sue radici s'intrecciano sul
mucchio delle macerie,
penetra fra le pietre della casa.
18 Ma divelto che sia dal suo luogo,
questo lo rinnega e gli dice: “Non ti ho mai visto!”
19 Tali sono le delizie che gli procura il suo comportamento!
Dalla polvere, altri dopo lui
germoglieranno.
20 No, Dio non respinge l'uomo
integro,
né porge aiuto a quelli che fanno
il male.
21 Egli renderà ancora il sorriso alla
tua bocca,
sulle tue labbra metterà canti
d'esultanza.
22 Quelli che ti odiano saranno
coperti di vergogna,
la tenda degli empi sparirà».
