Bildad Speaks: Job Should Repent
8 Then (A)Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:
2 “How long will you say these things,
and the words of your mouth be a (B)great wind?
3 (C)Does God pervert justice?
Or does the Almighty pervert the right?
4 If your (D)children have sinned against him,
he has delivered them into the hand of their transgression.
5 If you will seek God
and (E)plead with the Almighty for mercy,
6 if you are pure and upright,
surely then he will (F)rouse himself for you
and (G)restore your rightful habitation.
7 And though your beginning was small,
(H)your latter days will be very great.
8 “For (I)inquire, please, of bygone ages,
and consider what (J)the fathers have searched out.
9 For we are but of yesterday and know nothing,
for our days on earth are (K)a shadow.
10 Will they not teach you and tell you
and utter words out of their understanding?
11 “Can papyrus grow where there is no marsh?
Can reeds flourish where there is no water?
12 While yet in flower and not cut down,
they (L)wither before any other plant.
13 Such are the paths of all who (M)forget God;
(N)the hope of (O)the godless shall perish.
14 His confidence is severed,
and his trust is (P)a spider's web.[a]
15 He leans against his (Q)house, but it does not stand;
he lays hold of it, but it does not endure.
16 He is a lush plant before the sun,
and his (R)shoots spread over his garden.
17 His roots entwine the stone heap;
he looks upon a house of stones.
18 If he is destroyed from his (S)place,
then it will deny him, saying, ‘I have never (T)seen you.’
19 Behold, this is the joy of his way,
and out of (U)the soil others will spring.
20 “Behold, God will not reject a blameless man,
nor take the hand of evildoers.
21 He will yet (V)fill your mouth with laughter,
and your lips with shouting.
22 Those who hate you will be (W)clothed with shame,
and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”

8 Da antwortete Bildad, der Schuchiter, und sprach:
2 Wie lange willst du solche Reden führen, [wie lange] sollen die Worte deines Mundes wie heftiger Wind sein?
3 Beugt denn Gott das Recht, oder verkehrt der Allmächtige die Gerechtigkeit?
4 Wenn deine Kinder gegen ihn gesündigt haben, so hat er sie dahingegeben in die Gewalt[a] ihrer Missetat.
5 Bist du es aber, so suche Gott ernstlich und flehe um Gnade zu dem Allmächtigen!
6 Wenn du lauter und aufrichtig bist, so wird er sich um deinetwillen aufmachen und dein gerechtes Heim wiederherstellen.
7 Da wird dein früheres Glück im Vergleich zu deinem späteren klein sein![b]
8 Denn frage doch das frühere Geschlecht und beherzige das, was ihre Väter erforscht haben!
9 Denn von gestern sind wir und wissen nichts; ein Schatten nur sind unsere Tage auf Erden.
10 Sind sie es nicht, die dich belehren, es dir sagen und Sprüche hervorholen aus ihrem Herzen?[c]
11 Schießt der Papyrus ohne Sumpf empor, oder gedeiht das Riedgras ohne Wasser?
12 Noch steht es in vollem Trieb, ist nicht zum Schneiden reif — da verdorrt es schon vor allem anderen Gras.
13 Das ist der Weg all derer, die Gott vergessen; ja, die Hoffnung des Ruchlosen geht zugrunde!
14 Seine Zuversicht wird abgeschnitten, und sein Vertrauen ist ein Spinngewebe.
15 Er stützt sich auf sein Haus, aber es hält nicht stand; er hält sich daran fest, aber es bleibt nicht stehen.
16 Er steht voll Saft im Sonnenschein, und seine Ranken überziehen seinen Garten;
17 über Steinhaufen schlingen sich seine Wurzeln, auf ein Haus von Steinen schaut er hin.
18 Doch wenn man ihn von seiner Stätte wegreißt, so verleugnet sie ihn: »Ich habe dich nie gesehen!«
19 Siehe, das ist die Freude seines Weges, und aus dem Staub werden andere wachsen.
20 Siehe, Gott verwirft den Unschuldigen nicht, und er reicht auch keinem Übeltäter die Hand;
21 während er deinen Mund mit Lachen füllen wird und deine Lippen mit Freudengeschrei,
22 werden deine Hasser mit Schande bekleidet werden, und das Zelt der Gottlosen wird nicht mehr sein!

8 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
2 How long wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?
3 Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice?
4 If thy children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression;
5 If thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty;
6 If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
7 Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
8 For enquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers:
9 (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:)
10 Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?
11 Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water?
12 Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb.
13 So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish:
14 Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web.
15 He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.
16 He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden.
17 His roots are wrapped about the heap, and seeth the place of stones.
18 If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.
19 Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
20 Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:
21 Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing.
22 They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.
