⁹ As the cloud fades and vanishes,
    so those who go down to Sheol do not come up;^(A)

¹³ Turn your gaze away from me, that I may smile again,
    before I depart and am no more.”^(A)

¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me;
    my honor is pursued as by the wind,
    and my prosperity has passed away like a cloud.^(A)

²² For when a few years have come,
    I shall go the way from which I shall not return.^(A)

¹⁰ But mortals die and are laid low;
    humans expire, and where are they?^(A)
11 As waters fail from a lake
    and a river wastes away and dries up,^(B)
12 so mortals lie down and do not rise again;
    until the heavens are no more, they will not awake
    or be roused out of their sleep.^(C)
13 O that you would hide me in Sheol,
    that you would conceal me until your wrath is past,
    that you would appoint me a set time and remember me!^(D)
14 If mortals die, will they live again?
    All the days of my service I would wait
    until my release should come.^(E)

²¹ before I go, never to return,
    to the land of gloom and deep darkness,

¹¹ I said, I shall not see the Lord
    in the land of the living;
I shall look upon mortals no more
    among the inhabitants of the world.^(A)
