6 Si todas mis penas y desgracias
pudieran pesarse en una balanza,
3 pesarían más que la arena del mar.
Por eso he hablado con pasión.
4 El Todopoderoso ha clavado en mí sus flechas,
y el veneno de ellas me corre por el cuerpo.
Dios me ha llenado de terror con sus ataques.
5 ¿Acaso rebuzna el asno, si tiene hierba?
¿O brama el toro, si tiene pasto?
6 ¿Quién come sin sal una cosa desabrida?
¿Qué gusto tiene una cosa sin sabor?
7 Pues lo que jamás quise comer
es ahora mi alimento.
8 ¡Ojalá Dios me conceda lo que le pido;
ojalá me cumpla lo que deseo!
9 ¡Ojalá Dios se decida por fin
a aplastarme y acabar con mi vida!
10 A pesar de la violencia del dolor,
eso sería un gran consuelo para mí,
pues siempre he respetado las leyes del Dios santo.
11 Ya no me quedan fuerzas para resistir,
ni razón alguna para seguir viviendo.
12 No tengo la dureza de la roca,
ni la consistencia del bronce.
13 No puedo valerme por mí mismo,
ni cuento con ningún apoyo.
14 Al amigo que sufre se le ama,
aun cuando no haya sido fiel al Todopoderoso.
15 Pero ustedes, mis amigos, me han fallado,
como arroyos que se quedan secos.
16 El agua baja turbia,
revuelta con el hielo y la nieve;
17 pero pasa el deshielo y se secan los arroyos,
viene el calor y se acaba el agua.
18 Hacen que las caravanas se desvíen de su camino,
y que avancen por el desierto y mueran.
19 Las caravanas de Temá y de Sabá
buscan llenas de esperanza esos arroyos,
20 pero al llegar se ven decepcionadas,
queda frustrada su esperanza.
21 Así son ustedes para mí:
ven mi horrible situación, y sienten miedo.
22 Pero yo no les he pedido nada,
ni que den dinero por salvarme,
23 ni que me libren de un enemigo,
ni que me rescaten de las manos de los bandidos.
24 Denme lecciones, y guardaré silencio:
muéstrenme el error que he cometido.
25 Nadie puede rechazar un argumento correcto;
pero ustedes me acusaron sin razón.
26 Ustedes me critican por mis palabras,
palabras locas que se lleva el viento.
27 ¡Capaces son de jugarse la vida de un huérfano
y de vender aun a su propio amigo!
28 Mírenme ahora cara a cara;
díganme si miento.
29 Retiren lo dicho, no sean injustos;
reconozcan que tengo razón.
30 ¿Acaso creen que soy un mentiroso
que no se da cuenta de lo que dice?

Job reprocha la actitud de sus amigos
6 Respondió entonces Job, y dijo:
2 ¡Oh, que pesasen justamente mi queja y mi tormento,
Y se alzasen igualmente en balanza!
3 Porque pesarían ahora más que la arena del mar;
Por eso mis palabras han sido precipitadas.
4 Porque las saetas del Todopoderoso están en mí,
Cuyo veneno bebe mi espíritu;
Y terrores de Dios me combaten.
5 ¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto a la hierba?
¿Muge el buey junto a su pasto?
6 ¿Se comerá lo desabrido sin sal?
¿Habrá gusto en la clara del huevo?
7 Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar,
Son ahora mi alimento.
8 ¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición,
Y que me otorgase Dios lo que anhelo,
9 Y que agradara a Dios quebrantarme;
Que soltara su mano, y acabara conmigo!
10 Sería aún mi consuelo,
Si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua,
Que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo.
11 ¿Cuál es mi fuerza para esperar aún?
¿Y cuál mi fin para que tenga aún paciencia?
12 ¿Es mi fuerza la de las piedras,
O es mi carne de bronce?
13 ¿No es así que ni aun a mí mismo me puedo valer,
Y que todo auxilio me ha faltado?
14 El atribulado es consolado por su compañero;
Aun aquel que abandona el temor del Omnipotente.
15 Pero mis hermanos me traicionaron como un torrente;
Pasan como corrientes impetuosas
16 Que están escondidas por la helada,
Y encubiertas por la nieve;
17 Que al tiempo del calor son deshechas,
Y al calentarse, desaparecen de su lugar;
18 Se apartan de la senda de su rumbo,
Van menguando, y se pierden.
19 Miraron los caminantes de Temán,
Los caminantes de Sabá esperaron en ellas;
20 Pero fueron avergonzados por su esperanza;
Porque vinieron hasta ellas, y se hallaron confusos.
21 Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois vosotros;
Pues habéis visto el tormento, y teméis.
22 ¿Os he dicho yo: Traedme,
Y pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda;
23 Libradme de la mano del opresor,
Y redimidme del poder de los violentos?
24 Enseñadme, y yo callaré;
Hacedme entender en qué he errado.
25 ¡Cuán eficaces son las palabras rectas!
Pero ¿qué reprende la censura vuestra?
26 ¿Pensáis censurar palabras,
Y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento?
27 También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano,
Y caváis un hoyo para vuestro amigo.
28 Ahora, pues, si queréis, miradme,
Y ved si digo mentira delante de vosotros.
29 Volved ahora, y no haya iniquidad;
Volved aún a considerar mi justicia en esto.
30 ¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua?
¿Acaso no puede mi paladar discernir las cosas inicuas?

6 Then Job replied:
2 “If only my anguish could be weighed
and all my misery be placed on the scales!(A)
3 It would surely outweigh the sand(B) of the seas—
no wonder my words have been impetuous.(C)
4 The arrows(D) of the Almighty(E) are in me,(F)
my spirit drinks(G) in their poison;(H)
God’s terrors(I) are marshaled against me.(J)
5 Does a wild donkey(K) bray(L) when it has grass,
or an ox bellow when it has fodder?(M)
6 Is tasteless food eaten without salt,
or is there flavor in the sap of the mallow[a]?(N)
7 I refuse to touch it;
such food makes me ill.(O)
8 “Oh, that I might have my request,
that God would grant what I hope for,(P)
9 that God would be willing to crush(Q) me,
to let loose his hand and cut off my life!(R)
10 Then I would still have this consolation(S)—
my joy in unrelenting pain(T)—
that I had not denied the words(U) of the Holy One.(V)
11 “What strength do I have, that I should still hope?
What prospects, that I should be patient?(W)
12 Do I have the strength of stone?
Is my flesh bronze?(X)
13 Do I have any power to help myself,(Y)
now that success has been driven from me?
14 “Anyone who withholds kindness from a friend(Z)
forsakes the fear of the Almighty.(AA)
15 But my brothers are as undependable as intermittent streams,(AB)
as the streams that overflow
16 when darkened by thawing ice
and swollen with melting snow,(AC)
17 but that stop flowing in the dry season,
and in the heat(AD) vanish from their channels.
18 Caravans turn aside from their routes;
they go off into the wasteland and perish.
19 The caravans of Tema(AE) look for water,
the traveling merchants of Sheba(AF) look in hope.
20 They are distressed, because they had been confident;
they arrive there, only to be disappointed.(AG)
21 Now you too have proved to be of no help;
you see something dreadful and are afraid.(AH)
22 Have I ever said, ‘Give something on my behalf,
pay a ransom(AI) for me from your wealth,(AJ)
23 deliver me from the hand of the enemy,
rescue me from the clutches of the ruthless’?(AK)
24 “Teach me, and I will be quiet;(AL)
show me where I have been wrong.(AM)
25 How painful are honest words!(AN)
But what do your arguments prove?
26 Do you mean to correct what I say,
and treat my desperate words as wind?(AO)
27 You would even cast lots(AP) for the fatherless(AQ)
and barter away your friend.

6 Then Job answered and said,
2 “(A)Oh that my vexation were actually weighed
And laid in the balances together with my destruction!
3 For then it would be (B)heavier than the sand of the seas;
Therefore my words have been rash.
4 For the (C)arrows of the Almighty are within me,
[a]Their (D)poison my spirit drinks;
The (E)horrors of God are arranged against me.
5 Does the (F)wild donkey bray over his grass,
Or does the ox low over his fodder?
6 Can something tasteless be eaten without salt,
Or is there any taste in the slime of a [b]yolk?
7 My soul (G)refuses to touch them;
They are like loathsome food to me.
8 “Oh that my request might come to pass,
And that God would grant my hope!
9 Would that God were (H)willing to crush me,
That He would release His hand and cut me off!
10 But it is still my comfort,
And I rejoice in unsparing pain,
That I (I)have not at all hidden away the words of the Holy One.
11 What is my strength, that I should wait?
And what is my end, that I should [c](J)endure?
12 Is my strength the strength of stones,
Or is my flesh bronze?
13 Is it that there is no (K)help within me,
And that the [d](L)success of sound wisdom is driven from me?
14 “For the (M)despairing man lovingkindness should be from his friend;
But he (N)forsakes the [e]fear of the Almighty.
15 My brothers have (O)betrayed me like a [f]wadi,
Like the torrents of [g]wadis which pass away,
16 Which grow dark because of ice
And upon which the snow hides itself.
17 When (P)they become waterless, they [h]are silent;
When it is hot, they vanish from their place.
18 The [i]paths of their course wind along;
They go up into a formless place and perish.
19 The caravans of (Q)Tema looked;
The travelers of (R)Sheba hoped for them.
20 They (S)were ashamed for they had trusted;
They came there and were humiliated.
21 Indeed, you have now become such;
(T)You see a terror and are afraid.
22 Have I said, ‘Give me something,’
Or, ‘Offer a bribe for me from your wealth,’
23 Or, ‘Give me escape from the hand of the adversary,’
Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the ruthless men’?
24 “Instruct me, and (U)I will be silent;
And cause me to understand how I have erred.
25 How painful are upright words!
But what does your reproof prove?
26 Do you think to reprove my words,
Or think of the (V)words of one in despair as wind?
27 You would even (W)cast lots for (X)the orphans
And (Y)bargain over your friend.
28 So now be willing to face me,
And see if I (Z)lie to your face.
29 Now turn from this, let there be no unrighteousness;
Even turn from this, (AA)my righteousness is yet in it.
30 Is there unrighteousness on my tongue?
Cannot (AB)my palate discern [j]destruction?
