5 “Call if you will, but who will answer you?(A)
To which of the holy ones(B) will you turn?
2 Resentment(C) kills a fool,
and envy slays the simple.(D)
3 I myself have seen(E) a fool taking root,(F)
but suddenly(G) his house was cursed.(H)
4 His children(I) are far from safety,(J)
crushed in court(K) without a defender.(L)
5 The hungry consume his harvest,(M)
taking it even from among thorns,
and the thirsty pant after his wealth.
6 For hardship does not spring from the soil,
nor does trouble sprout from the ground.(N)
7 Yet man is born to trouble(O)
as surely as sparks fly upward.
8 “But if I were you, I would appeal to God;
I would lay my cause before him.(P)
9 He performs wonders(Q) that cannot be fathomed,(R)
miracles that cannot be counted.(S)
10 He provides rain for the earth;(T)
he sends water on the countryside.(U)
11 The lowly he sets on high,(V)
and those who mourn(W) are lifted(X) to safety.
12 He thwarts the plans(Y) of the crafty,
so that their hands achieve no success.(Z)
13 He catches the wise(AA) in their craftiness,(AB)
and the schemes of the wily are swept away.(AC)
14 Darkness(AD) comes upon them in the daytime;
at noon they grope as in the night.(AE)
15 He saves the needy(AF) from the sword in their mouth;
he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.(AG)
16 So the poor(AH) have hope,
and injustice shuts its mouth.(AI)
17 “Blessed is the one whom God corrects;(AJ)
so do not despise the discipline(AK) of the Almighty.[a](AL)
18 For he wounds, but he also binds up;(AM)
he injures, but his hands also heal.(AN)
19 From six calamities he will rescue(AO) you;
in seven no harm will touch you.(AP)
20 In famine(AQ) he will deliver you from death,
and in battle from the stroke of the sword.(AR)
21 You will be protected from the lash of the tongue,(AS)
and need not fear(AT) when destruction comes.(AU)
22 You will laugh(AV) at destruction and famine,(AW)
and need not fear the wild animals.(AX)
23 For you will have a covenant(AY) with the stones(AZ) of the field,
and the wild animals will be at peace with you.(BA)
24 You will know that your tent is secure;(BB)
you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.(BC)
25 You will know that your children will be many,(BD)
and your descendants like the grass of the earth.(BE)
26 You will come to the grave in full vigor,(BF)
like sheaves gathered in season.(BG)

2 Por certo, o ressentimento destrói o insensato,
e a inveja mata o tolo.
3 Observei que os insensatos têm sucesso por um tempo,
mas desgraça repentina vem sobre eles.
4 Seus filhos perdem toda e qualquer segurança;
são oprimidos no tribunal, e não há quem os defenda.
5 Os famintos devoram sua colheita,
mesmo quando protegida por espinheiros,[b]
e os sedentos anseiam por sua riqueza.[c]
6 Embora o mal não surja do solo,
nem as dificuldades brotem da terra,
7 o ser humano nasce para enfrentar aflições,
tão certo como as faíscas do fogo voam para o alto.
8 “Se eu fosse você, buscaria a Deus
e lhe apresentaria minha causa.
9 Ele faz grandes coisas, maravilhosas demais para entender,
e realiza milagres incontáveis.
10 Dá chuva à terra
e água aos campos.
11 Exalta os humildes
e protege os que sofrem.
12 Frustra os planos dos maliciosos,
para que as obras de suas mãos fracassem.
13 Apanha os sábios em sua própria astúcia
e frustra as intrigas dos ardilosos.
14 Ficam na escuridão em pleno dia
e tateiam ao meio-dia como se fosse noite.
15 Ele salva os pobres das ofensas dos fortes
e os livra das garras dos poderosos.
16 Por fim, os desamparados têm esperança,
e a boca dos perversos é fechada.
17 “Mas como são felizes os que Deus corrige!
Não despreze, portanto, a disciplina do Todo-poderoso.
18 Pois ele fere, mas enfaixa a ferida;
bate, mas suas mãos curam.
19 Ele o livrará de seis desgraças,
e até mesmo na sétima o guardará do mal.
20 Ele o livrará da morte no tempo de fome
e do poder da espada no tempo de guerra.
21 Você estará protegido das calúnias
e não terá medo quando vier a destruição.
22 Rirá da destruição e da fome,
e animais selvagens não o assustarão.
23 Fará um pacto com as pedras do campo,
e os animais selvagens estarão em paz com você.
24 Saberá que seu lar está seguro;
ao contar seus bens, de nada achará falta.
25 Terá muitos filhos,
tantos descendentes como o capim no pasto.
26 Em boa velhice irá para a sepultura,
como um feixe de cereal colhido no tempo certo.
27 “Observamos a vida e vimos que tudo isso é verdade;

2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.
3 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.
5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.
6 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
7 Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
9 Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:
11 To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.
12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.
14 They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night.
15 But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
16 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:
18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.
19 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
20 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.
21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.

5 “Call out now;
Is there anyone who will answer you?
And to which of the holy ones will you turn?

And envy slays a simple one.
3 (A)I have seen the foolish taking root,
But suddenly I cursed his dwelling place.
4 His sons are (B)far from safety,
They are crushed in the gate,
And (C)there is no deliverer.
5 Because the hungry eat up his harvest,

[b]And a snare snatches their [c]substance.
6 For affliction does not come from the dust,
Nor does trouble spring from the ground;
