5 “They cry for help but no one listens; they turn to their gods, but none gives them aid. 2 They die in helpless frustration, overcome by their own anger. 3 Those who turn from God may be successful for the moment, but then comes sudden disaster. 4 Their children are cheated, with no one to defend them. 5 Their harvests are stolen, and their wealth slakes the thirst of many others, not themselves! 6 Misery comes upon them to punish them for sowing seeds of sin. 7 Mankind heads for sin and misery as predictably as flames shoot upwards from a fire.
8 “My advice to you is this: Go to God and confess your sins to him.[a] 9 For he does wonderful miracles, marvels without number. 10 He sends the rain upon the earth to water the fields, 11 and gives prosperity to the poor and humble, and takes sufferers to safety.
12 “He frustrates the plans of crafty men. 13 They are caught in their own traps; he thwarts their schemes. 14 They grope like blind men in the daylight; they see no better in the daytime than at night.
15 “God saves the fatherless and the poor from the grasp of these oppressors. 16 And so at last the poor have hope, and the fangs of the wicked are broken.
17 “How enviable the man whom God corrects! Oh, do not despise the chastening of the Lord when you sin. 18 For though he wounds, he binds and heals again. 19 He will deliver you again and again so that no evil can touch you.
20 “He will keep you from death in famine and from the power of the sword in time of war.
21 “You will be safe from slander; no need to fear the future.
22 “You shall laugh at war and famine; wild animals will leave you alone. 23 Dangerous animals will be at peace with you.
24 “You need not worry about your home while you are gone; nothing shall be stolen from your barns.
25 “Your sons shall become important men; your descendants shall be as numerous as grass! 26 You shall live a long, good life; like standing grain, you’ll not be harvested until it’s time! 27 I have found from experience that all of this is true. For your own good, listen to my counsel.”

Eliphaz: Job Is Chastened by God
5 “Call out now;
Is there anyone who will answer you?
And to which of the holy ones will you turn?
2 For wrath kills a foolish man,
And envy slays a simple one.
3 (A)I have seen the foolish taking root,
But suddenly I cursed his dwelling place.
4 His sons are (B)far from safety,
They are crushed in the gate,
And (C)there is no deliverer.
5 Because the hungry eat up his harvest,
[a]Taking it even from the thorns,
[b]And a snare snatches their [c]substance.
6 For affliction does not come from the dust,
Nor does trouble spring from the ground;
7 Yet man is (D)born to [d]trouble,
As the sparks fly upward.
8 “But as for me, I would seek God,
And to God I would commit my cause—
9 Who does great things, and unsearchable,
Marvelous things without number.
10 (E)He gives rain on the earth,
And sends waters on the fields.
11 (F)He sets on high those who are lowly,
And those who mourn are lifted to safety.
12 (G)He frustrates the devices of the crafty,
So that their hands cannot carry out their plans.
13 He catches the (H)wise in their own craftiness,
And the counsel of the cunning comes quickly upon them.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime,
And grope at noontime as in the night.
15 But (I)He saves the needy from the sword,
From the mouth of the mighty,
And from their hand.
16 (J)So the poor have hope,
And injustice shuts her mouth.
17 “Behold,(K) happy is the man whom God corrects;
Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.
18 (L)For He bruises, but He binds up;
He wounds, but His hands make whole.
19 (M)He shall deliver you in six troubles,
Yes, in seven (N)no evil shall touch you.
20 (O)In famine He shall redeem you from death,
And in war from the [e]power of the sword.
21 (P)You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue,
And you shall not be afraid of destruction when it comes.
22 You shall laugh at destruction and famine,
And (Q)you shall not be afraid of the (R)beasts of the earth.
23 (S)For you shall have a covenant with the stones of the field,
And the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
24 You shall know that your tent is in peace;
You shall visit your dwelling and find nothing amiss.
25 You shall also know that (T)your descendants shall be many,
And your offspring (U)like the grass of the earth.
26 (V)You shall come to the grave at a full age,
As a sheaf of grain ripens in its season.
27 Behold, this we have (W)searched out;
It is true.
Hear it, and know for yourself.”

5 Crie maintenant! Qui te répondra? Auquel des saints t'adresseras-tu?
2 L'insensé périt dans sa colère, Le fou meurt dans ses emportements.
3 J'ai vu l'insensé prendre racine; Puis soudain j'ai maudit sa demeure.
4 Plus de prospérité pour ses fils; Ils sont foulés à la porte, et personne qui les délivre!
5 Sa moisson est dévorée par des affamés, Qui viennent l'enlever jusque dans les épines, Et ses biens sont engloutis par des hommes altérés.
6 Le malheur ne sort pas de la poussière, Et la souffrance ne germe pas du sol;
7 L'homme naît pour souffrir, Comme l'étincelle pour voler.
8 Pour moi, j'aurais recours à Dieu, Et c'est à Dieu que j'exposerais ma cause.
9 Il fait des choses grandes et insondables, Des merveilles sans nombre;
10 Il répand la pluie sur la terre, Et envoie l'eau sur les campagnes;
11 Il relève les humbles, Et délivre les affligés;
12 Il anéantit les projets des hommes rusés, Et leurs mains ne peuvent les accomplir;
13 Il prend les sages dans leur propre ruse, Et les desseins des hommes artificieux sont renversés:
14 Ils rencontrent les ténèbres au milieu du jour, Ils tâtonnent en plein midi comme dans la nuit.
15 Ainsi Dieu protège le faible contre leurs menaces, Et le sauve de la main des puissants;
16 Et l'espérance soutient le malheureux, Mais l'iniquité ferme la bouche.
17 Heureux l'homme que Dieu châtie! Ne méprise pas la correction du Tout Puissant.
18 Il fait la plaie, et il la bande; Il blesse, et sa main guérit.
19 Six fois il te délivrera de l'angoisse, Et sept fois le mal ne t'atteindra pas.
20 Il te sauvera de la mort pendant la famine, Et des coups du glaive pendant la guerre.
21 Tu seras à l'abri du fléau de la langue, Tu seras sans crainte quand viendra la dévastation.
22 Tu te riras de la dévastation comme de la famine, Et tu n'auras pas à redouter les bêtes de la terre;
23 Car tu feras alliance avec les pierres des champs, Et les bêtes de la terre seront en paix avec toi.
24 Tu jouiras du bonheur sous ta tente, Tu retrouveras tes troupeaux au complet,
25 Tu verras ta postérité s'accroître, Et tes rejetons se multiplier comme l'herbe des champs.
26 Tu entreras au sépulcre dans la vieillesse, Comme on emporte une gerbe en son temps.
27 Voilà ce que nous avons reconnu, voilà ce qui est; A toi d'entendre et de mettre à profit.
