Eliphaz Continues: Seek God’s Help, Job
5 “Cry out!
Is there anyone to answer you?
To which of the holy ones will you turn?
2 Certainly, anger kills a stubborn fool,
and jealousy murders a gullible person.
3 I have seen a stubborn fool take root,
but I quickly cursed his house.
4 His children are far from help.
They are crushed at the city gate,
and no one is there to rescue them.
5 What a stubborn fool gathers, hungry people eat.
They take it even from among the thorns,
and thirsty people pant after his wealth.
6 Certainly, sorrow doesn’t come from the soil,
and trouble doesn’t sprout from the ground.
7 But a person is born for trouble as surely as sparks fly up ⌞from a fire⌟.
8 “But I would seek God’s help
and present my case to him.
9 He does great things that ⌞we⌟ cannot understand
and miracles that ⌞we⌟ cannot count.
10 He gives rain to the earth
and sends water to the fields.
11 He places lowly people up high.
He lifts those who mourn to safety.
12 He keeps shrewd people from carrying out their plans
so that they cannot do anything successfully.
13 He catches the wise with their own tricks.
The plans of schemers prove to be hasty.
14 In the daytime they meet darkness
and grope in the sunlight as if it were night.
15 “But he saves ⌞other people⌟ from their slander
and the needy from the power of the mighty.
16 Then the poor have hope
while wrongdoing shuts its mouth.
Blessing Comes When God Corrects You
17 “Blessed is the person whom God corrects.
That person should not despise discipline from the Almighty.
18 God injures, but he bandages.
He beats you up, but his hands make you well.
19 He will keep you safe from six troubles,
and when the seventh one comes, no harm will touch you:
20 “In famine he will save you from death,
and in war he will save you from the sword.
21 “When the tongue lashes out, you will be safe,
and you will not be afraid of destruction when it comes.
22 “You will be able to laugh at destruction and starvation,
so do not be afraid of wild animals on the earth.
23 “You will have a binding agreement with the stones in the field,
and wild animals will be at peace with you.
24 “You will know peace in your tent.
You will inspect your house and find nothing missing.
25 “You will find that your children are many
and your descendants are like the grass of the earth.
26 “You will come to your grave at a ripe old age
like a stack of hay in the right season.
27 “We have studied all of this thoroughly! This is the way it is.
Listen to it, and learn it for yourself.”

5 Llama ahora, ¿habrá quién te responda?
¿Y a cuál de los santos(A) te volverás?
2 Porque el enojo mata al insensato,
y la ira da muerte al necio(B).
3 Yo he visto al insensato echar raíces(C),
y al instante maldije su morada(D).
4 Sus hijos no tienen seguridad alguna(E),
aun en la puerta son oprimidos[a],
y no hay quien los libre.
5 Su[b] cosecha devoran los hambrientos,
la toman aun de entre los espinos,
y el intrigante[c](F) ansía su riqueza.
6 Porque la aflicción(G) no viene del polvo,
ni brota el infortunio de la tierra;
7 porque el hombre nace para la aflicción(H),
como las chispas vuelan hacia arriba.
8 Pero yo buscaría a Dios,
y delante de Dios presentaría mi causa(I);
9 Él hace cosas grandes e inescrutables,
maravillas[d] sin número(J).
10 Él da la lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra,
y envía las aguas sobre[e] los campos(K).
11 Para poner en alto a los humildes,
y a los que lloran levantarlos a lugar seguro(L),
12 Él frustra las tramas de los astutos(M),
para que sus manos no tengan éxito.
13 Él prende a los sabios en su propia astucia(N),
y el consejo de los sagaces pronto se frustra.
14 De día tropiezan con las tinieblas,
y a mediodía andan a tientas como de noche(O).
15 Pero Él salva al pobre de la espada, de sus bocas(P)
y de la mano del poderoso(Q).
16 El desamparado, pues, tiene esperanza,
y la injusticia tiene que cerrar su boca(R).
17 He aquí, cuán bienaventurado es el hombre a quien Dios reprende(S);
no desprecies, pues, la disciplina del Todopoderoso[f](T).
18 Porque Él inflige dolor, pero da alivio[g];
Él hiere, pero sus manos también sanan(U).
19 De[h] seis aflicciones te librará(V),
y en siete no te tocará el mal(W).
20 En el hambre te salvará de la muerte(X),
y en la guerra del poder de la espada(Y).
21 Estarás a cubierto del azote de la lengua(Z),
y no temerás la violencia cuando venga(AA).
22 De la violencia y del hambre te reirás(AB),
y no temerás a las fieras de la tierra(AC).
23 Pues con las piedras del campo harás tu alianza,
y las fieras del campo estarán en paz contigo(AD).
24 Y sabrás que tu tienda está segura[i],
porque visitarás tu morada y no temerás pérdida alguna(AE).
25 También sabrás que tu descendencia[j] será numerosa(AF),
y tus vástagos como la hierba de la tierra(AG).
26 En pleno vigor llegarás al sepulcro(AH),
como se hacinan las gavillas a su tiempo.
27 He aquí, esto lo hemos examinado, y así es;
óyelo, y conócelo para tu bien[k].

5 Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?
2 For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.
3 I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer:
5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh even out of the thorns; and the snare gapeth for his substance.
6 For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
7 For man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards.
8 But as for me I will seek unto God, and unto God commit my cause;
9 Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;
10 Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;
11 Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.
12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.
13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:
14 They meet with darkness in a the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.
15 And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
16 So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.
17 Behold, happy is the man whom +God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.
18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.
19 He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
20 In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.
21 Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.
23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24 And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.
25 And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.
26 Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.
27 Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.
