42 Tada je Job odgovorio BOGU:
2 »Znam da sve možeš. Poželiš li što učiniti,
nitko to ne može promijeniti niti spriječiti.
3 Pitao si: ‘Tko je ovaj koji krivo govori
o mojem ustroju svijeta?’
Govorio sam o stvarima koje nisam razumio,
previše su čudesne za mene i nisam ih shvaćao.
4 Rekao si: ‘Slušaj sada, a ja ću govoriti;
pitat ću te, a ti mi odgovori.’
5 Čuo sam te vlastitim ušima,
a sada su te i moje oči vidjele.
6 Povlačim što sam rekao.
Tugovao sam u prahu i pepelu,
ali sada prihvaćam utjehu.«
Zaključak
7 Nakon što je BOG sve to izgovorio Jobu, rekao je Elifazu iz Temana: »Ljut sam na tebe i na tvojih dvojicu prijatelja. Niste o meni govorili istinito kao moj sluga Job. 8 Stoga, sada uzmite sedam junaca i sedam ovnova pa idite mom slugi Jobu i za sebe prinesite žrtvu paljenicu. Moj sluga Job molit će za vas, a ja ću mu prihvatiti molitvu. Neću vas kazniti za vašu nerazumnost iako niste o meni govorili istinito kao moj sluga Job.«
9 Tada su Elifaz iz Temana, Bildad iz Šuaha i Sofar iz Naama učinili kako im je rekao BOG. Potom je BOG prihvatio Jobovu molitvu.
10 Nakon što je Job molio za svoje prijatelje, BOG mu je vratio blagostanje. Dao mu je i dvostruko više nego što je imao ranije. 11 U kuću su mu došli sva braća i sestre, zajedno sa svim njegovim poznanicima, pa su s njim jeli. Tugovali su s njim i tješili ga zbog svih nevolja koje je BOG poslao na njega. Svatko mu je od njih dao srebrnjak i zlatan prsten.
12 Drugi je dio Jobovog života BOG blagoslovio više nego prvi. Stekao je četrnaest tisuća ovaca, šest tisuća deva, dvije tisuće volova i tisuću magarica. 13 Također, dobio je i sedmoricu sinova i tri kćeri. 14 Prvoj je kćeri dao ime Jemima, drugoj Kesija, a trećoj Keren Hapuka. 15 U cijeloj zemlji nisu se mogle naći žene tako lijepe kao Jobove kćeri. Otac im je dao dio nasljedstva, kao i njihovoj braći.
16 Nakon toga Job je poživio još sto četrdeset godina. Ne samo što je vidio svoju djecu nego i unuke svojih unuka. 17 Job je umro u dubokoj starosti, nakon dugog i ispunjenog života.

Job’s Repentance and Restoration
42 Then Job answered the Lord and said:
2 “I know that You (A)can do everything,
And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
3 You asked, (B)‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
(C)Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
4 Listen, please, and let me speak;
You said, (D)‘I will question you, and you shall answer Me.’
5 “I have (E)heard of You by the hearing of the ear,
But now my eye sees You.
6 Therefore I (F)abhor[a] myself,
And repent in dust and ashes.”
7 And so it was, after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has. 8 Now therefore, take for yourselves (G)seven bulls and seven rams, (H)go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and My servant Job shall (I)pray for you. For I will accept [b]him, lest I deal with you according to your folly; because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.”
9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord commanded them; for the Lord had [c]accepted Job. 10 (J)And the Lord [d]restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the Lord gave Job (K)twice as much as he had before. 11 Then (L)all his brothers, all his sisters, and all those who had been his acquaintances before, came to him and ate food with him in his house; and they consoled him and comforted him for all the adversity that the Lord had brought upon him. Each one gave him a piece of silver and each a ring of gold.
12 Now the Lord blessed (M)the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had (N)fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. 13 (O)He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first [e]Jemimah, the name of the second [f]Keziah, and the name of the third [g]Keren-Happuch. 15 In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers.
16 After this Job (P)lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. 17 So Job died, old and (Q)full of days.

Job's Confession and Repentance
42 Then Job answered the Lord and said:

3 (B)‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’

4 ‘Hear, and I will speak;

5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,

The Lord Rebukes Job's Friends
7 After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz (F)the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. 8 Now therefore take (G)seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and (H)offer up a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job shall (I)pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.” 9 (J)So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did what the Lord had told them, and the Lord accepted Job's prayer.
The Lord Restores Job's Fortunes
10 And the Lord (K)restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job (L)twice as much as he had before. 11 Then came to him all his (M)brothers and sisters and all who had (N)known him before, and ate bread with him in his house. And they (O)showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil[b] that the Lord had brought upon him. And each of them gave him (P)a piece of money[c] and (Q)a ring of gold.
12 And the Lord blessed (R)the latter days of Job more than his beginning. And he had (S)14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 He had also (T)seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first daughter Jemimah, and the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-happuch. 15 And in all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job's daughters. Chapter 42
1 Then Job answered the Lord and said:

3 “Who is this who obscures counsel with ignorance?”
I have spoken but did not understand;
things too marvelous for me, which I did not know.(A)
4 “Listen, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you tell me the answers.”
5 By hearsay I had heard of you,
but now my eye has seen you.[b]
6 Therefore I disown what I have said,
and repent in dust and ashes.[c]
IX. Epilogue
Job’s Restoration. 7 And after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My anger blazes against you and your two friends![d] You have not spoken rightly concerning me, as has my servant Job. 8 So now take seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves, and let my servant Job pray for you.[e] To him I will show favor, and not punish your folly, for you have not spoken rightly concerning me, as has my servant Job.” 9 Then Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, went and did as the Lord had commanded them. The Lord showed favor to Job.
10 The Lord also restored the prosperity of Job, after he had prayed for his friends; the Lord even gave to Job twice[f] as much as he had before. 11 Then all his brothers and sisters came to him, and all his former acquaintances, and they dined with him in his house. They consoled and comforted him for all the evil the Lord had brought upon him, and each one gave him a piece of money[g] and a gold ring.
12 (B)Thus the Lord blessed the later days of Job more than his earlier ones. Now he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she-donkeys. 13 He also had seven sons and three daughters: 14 the first daughter he called Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch.[h] 15 In all the land no other women were as beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance[i] among their brothers.
16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; and he saw his children, his grandchildren, and even his great-grandchildren.(C) 17 Then Job died, old and full of years.

- 42:2–4 In his final speech, Job quotes God’s own words (see 38:2–3; 40:7).
- 42:5 In 19:25–27 Job had affirmed a hope to “see” (three times) his vindicator. Now he has seen the Lord about whom he had heard so much.
- 42:6 A difficult verse. Some doubt, in view of God’s commendation in v. 7, that Job does in fact express repentance, and alternative translations are often given. Along with v. 5, it describes a change in Job, which the encounter with the Lord has brought about. Dust and ashes: an ambiguous phrase. It can refer to the human condition (cf. Gn 18:27; Jb 30:19) or to Job’s ash heap (2:8).
- 42:7 The three friends of Job (Elihu is ignored in the epilogue) are criticized by the Lord because they had “not spoken rightly” (vv. 7–8).
- 42:8 An ironic touch: Job becomes the intercessor for his friends.
- 42:10 Twice: this is the fine for damage inflicted upon another; cf. Ex 22:3. The Lord pays up!
- 42:11 A piece of money: lit., qesitah, value unknown; also used in Gn 33:19; Jos 24:32. Gold ring: for the nose or ear.
- 42:14 Job’s daughters had names symbolic of their charms: Jemimah, dove; Keziah, precious perfume (cf. Ps 45:9); Keren-happuch, cosmetic jar—more precisely, a container for a black powder used like modern mascara.
- 42:15 Ordinarily daughters did not inherit property unless there were no sons; cf. Nm 27:1–11.

Epilogue

They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,(Y) and each one gave him a piece of silver[a] and a gold ring.

He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.
