41 »¿Puedes pescar al Leviatán con cuerda y anzuelo? ¿O echarle un nudo corredizo a la lengua? 2 ¿Puedes atarlo de la nariz con una cuerda, o atravesarle la quijada con un garfio? 3 ¿Te suplicará que lo dejes en paz, o con zalamerías procurará aplacarte? 4 ¿Consentirá en que lo esclavices de por vida? 5 ¿Podrás domesticarlo como a un pájaro y dárselo a tus hijas para que jueguen? 6 ¿Lo llevarán los pescadores para que lo pongan a la venta en la pescadería? 7 ¿Será su piel vulnerable a los dardos, o su cabeza al arpón?
8 »Si llegaras a agarrarlo jamás olvidarías aquella lucha, ni querrías repetirla. 9 No, vano es querer atraparlo. El solo pensarlo asusta. 10 Nadie se atreve a provocarlo; mucho menos a capturarlo. Y si ante él nadie se mantiene, ¡quién se mantendrá delante de mí! 11 A nadie soy deudor. Cuanto hay bajo el cielo me pertenece.
12 »Debo también mencionar la tremenda fuerza que hay en sus miembros y en todo su cuerpo. 13 ¿Quién puede perforarle la piel, o quién se atreve a ponerse al alcance de sus fauces? 14 Porque tiene unos dientes terribles. 15-17 Se enorgullece de sus escamas traslapadas perfectamente selladas, que no dejan pasar aire, y que nada puede penetrarlas. 18 Cuando estornuda, la luz del sol resplandece como relámpago al pasar por la llovizna. Sus ojos brillan como chispas. 19 Lanza fuego por la boca. 20 Por las narices echa humo como el vapor que sale de un caldero sobre fuego de juncos secos. 21 Sí, su aliento encendería carbones; echa llamas por la boca.
22 »La inmensa fuerza de su cuello infunde terror por dondequiera que pasa. 23 Tiene la piel dura y firme, no blanda ni fofa. 24 Tiene el corazón duro como roca; como piedra de molino. 25 Cuando se pone de pie, aun los más fuertes se atemorizan: el terror los domina. 26 No hay espada, ni lanza, dardo o aguda flecha que lo detenga. 27-28 Para él el hierro es como paja, y el bronce como palo podrido. Las flechas no lo ahuyentan. Las piedras de honda son tan inútiles como paja. 29 Los garrotes de nada sirven y él se ríe de las jabalinas que lanzan. 30 Tiene el vientre cubierto de escamas como cascos agudos; ¡se arrastra por la tierra como un rodillo de aplanar!
31-32 »Hace rebullir al agua cuando se pone en movimiento. Agita lo profundo. Deja tras sí una brillante estela de espuma. ¡Al verlo, parece que el mar fuera de escarcha! 33 No hay en toda la tierra un ser que, como él, a nada tema. 34 Entre todas las bestias es la más orgullosa; es el monarca de todo cuanto ve».

41 (40.25) Y a Leviatán, ¿lo pescarás con un anzuelo?
¿Podrás atarle la lengua con una cuerda?
2 (40.26) ¿Podrás pasarle un cordel por las narices
o atravesarle con un gancho la quijada?
3 (40.27) ¿Acaso va a rogarte que le tengas compasión,
y a suplicarte con palabras tiernas?
4 (40.28) ¿Acaso harás que te prometa
ser tu esclavo toda la vida?
5 (40.29) ¿Jugarás con él como con un pajarito?
¿Lo atarás como juguete de tus hijas?
6 (40.30) ¿Se pondrán a regatear por él en el mercado?
¿Lo cortarán en pedazos para venderlo?
7 (40.31) ¿Podrás atravesarle el cuero con flechas,
o la cabeza con arpones?
8 (40.32) Si llegas a ponerle la mano encima,
te dará tal batalla que no la olvidarás,
y nunca volverás a hacerlo.
9 (1) Con sólo ver a Leviatán,
cualquiera se desmaya de miedo.
10 (2) Si alguien lo provoca, se pone furioso;
nadie es capaz de hacerle frente.
11 (3) ¿Quién, que se le enfrente, saldrá sano y salvo?
¡Nadie en todo el mundo!
12 (4) No dejaré de mencionar sus patas
y su fuerza sin igual.
13 (5) ¿Quién puede quitarle el cuero que lo cubre,
o atravesar su doble coraza protectora?
14 (6) ¿Quién puede abrirle el hocico,
con su cerco de terribles dientes?
15 (7) Sus lomos son hileras de escudos
cerrados y duros como la piedra.
16 (8) Tan apretados están unos contra otros,
que ni el aire puede pasar entre ellos.
17 (9) Tan unidos y trabados están,
que nadie puede separarlos.
18 (10) Sus estornudos son como relámpagos;
sus ojos brillan como el sol cuando amanece.
19 (11) De su hocico salen llamaradas
y se escapan chispas de fuego.
20 (12) De sus narices sale humo,
como de una caldera que hierve al fuego.
21 (13) Su aliento enciende las brasas,
de su hocico salen llamas.
22 (14) Su cuello es tan fuerte
que ante él todos se llenan de miedo.
23 (15) Aun la parte carnosa de su cuerpo
es dura e impenetrable, como hierro fundido.
24 (16) Tiene el corazón duro como la roca,
duro como piedra de moler.
25 (17) Cuando él se levanta, los dioses se espantan
y huyen llenos de terror.
26 (18) Ni espada ni lanza ni flecha ni dardo
sirven de nada para atacarlo.
27 (19) Para él, el hierro es como paja,
y el bronce como madera podrida.
28 (20) Las flechas no lo hacen huir;
lanzarle piedras es como lanzarle paja.
29 (21) Un golpe de mazo le es como un golpe de caña;
se ríe al oír silbar las jabalinas.
30 (22) Cuando se arrastra, abre surcos en el barro,
como si lo hiciera con afilados trillos.
31 (23) Hace hervir como una olla al mar profundo;
como una caldera para mezclar ungüentos.
32 (24) Va dejando en el agua una estela
blanca y brillante como melena de canas.
33 (25) No hay en la tierra nada que se le parezca;
fue hecho para no sentir miedo jamás.
34 (26) Hace frente aun a los más arrogantes,
y es el rey de todas las fieras.

or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord through its nose(C)
or pierce its jaw with a hook?(D)
3 Will it keep begging you for mercy?(E)
Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will it make an agreement with you
for you to take it as your slave for life?(F)
5 Can you make a pet of it like a bird
or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Will traders barter for it?
Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7 Can you fill its hide with harpoons
or its head with fishing spears?(G)
8 If you lay a hand on it,
you will remember the struggle and never do it again!(H)
9 Any hope of subduing it is false;
the mere sight of it is overpowering.(I)
10 No one is fierce enough to rouse it.(J)
Who then is able to stand against me?(K)
11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay?(L)
Everything under heaven belongs to me.(M)
12 “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs,(N)
its strength(O) and its graceful form.
13 Who can strip off its outer coat?
Who can penetrate its double coat of armor[b]?(P)
14 Who dares open the doors of its mouth,(Q)
ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 Its back has[c] rows of shields
tightly sealed together;(R)
16 each is so close to the next
that no air can pass between.
17 They are joined fast to one another;
they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 Its snorting throws out flashes of light;
its eyes are like the rays of dawn.(S)
19 Flames(T) stream from its mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke pours from its nostrils(U)
as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 Its breath(V) sets coals ablaze,
and flames dart from its mouth.(W)
22 Strength(X) resides in its neck;
dismay goes before it.
23 The folds of its flesh are tightly joined;
they are firm and immovable.
24 Its chest is hard as rock,
hard as a lower millstone.(Y)
25 When it rises up, the mighty are terrified;(Z)
they retreat before its thrashing.(AA)
26 The sword that reaches it has no effect,
nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.(AB)
27 Iron it treats like straw(AC)
and bronze like rotten wood.
28 Arrows do not make it flee;(AD)
slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 A club seems to it but a piece of straw;(AE)
it laughs(AF) at the rattling of the lance.
30 Its undersides are jagged potsherds,
leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.(AG)
31 It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron(AH)
and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.(AI)
32 It leaves a glistening wake behind it;
one would think the deep had white hair.
33 Nothing on earth is its equal(AJ)—
a creature without fear.

41 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?
2 Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?
3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?
4 Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
5 Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
7 Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?
8 Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?
14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
15 His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
16 One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
18 By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
20 Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.
21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
22 In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
23 The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
24 His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
25 When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.
26 The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
27 He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.
29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.
31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.
33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
34 He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
