Job 41
Lexham English Bible
41 [a] “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook?
Or[b] can you tie down its mouth with a cord?[c]
2 Can you put a rope in its nose?
Or[d] can you pierce its jawbone with a hook?
3 Will it make numerous pleas for mercy to you?
Or will it speak gentle words to you?
4 Will it make a covenant with you?
Will you take it as a slave forever?
5 Will you play with it as with birds
and put it on a leash for your girls?
6 Will guildsmen bargain over it?
Will they divide it between tradesmen?
7 Can you fill its kin with harpoons
or[e] its head with fish spears?
8 Lay your hands on it;
think about the battle—you will not do it again!
9 “Look, the hope of capturing it[f] is false.
Will one be hurled down even at its sight?
10 Is it not fierce when somebody stirs it?
Who then is he who would stand before it?[g]
11 Who has come to confront me, that[h] I should repay him?
Under all the heavens, it belongs to me.[i]
12 “I will not keep quiet concerning its limbs
or[j] concerning the extent of its might and the gracefulness of its frame.
13 Who can strip off its outer covering?[k]
Who can penetrate its double harness?
14 Who can open the doors of its face?
Its teeth all around are fearsome.
15 Its back[l] has scales of shields;
it is shut up closely as with a seal.
16 They are close to one another—[m]
even[n] the air cannot come between them.
17 They are joined one to another;[o]
they cling together and cannot be separated.
18 “Its snorting flashes forth light,
and its eyes are red like dawn.[p]
19 Torches go from its mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke comes from its nostrils
as from a kettle boiling and burning bulrushes.
21 Its breath kindles charcoal,
and a flame comes from its mouth.
22 “Strength abides in its neck,
and dismay[q] dances before it.[r]
23 Its flesh’s folds of skin cling together;
it is cast on it—it will not be moved.
24 Its heart is cast as stone;
yes,[s] it is cast as the lower millstone.
25 When it raises itself,[t] the mighty ones are terrified;
they retreat because of its thrashing.
26 Reaching it with the sword does not avail,
nor with the spear, the dart, or[u] the javelin.
27 It regards iron as straw,
bronze as rotten wood.
28 An arrow[v] will not make it flee;
sling stones are turned to stubble for it.
29 Clubs are regarded as stubble,
and it laughs at the short sword’s rattle.
30 “Its underparts are shards of a potsherd;
it moves over mud like a threshing sledge.
31 It makes the deep boil like a cooking pot;
it makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Behind it, it leaves a glistening wake;[w]
one would think that the deep has gray hair.
33 “On the ground it has no equal[x]—
a[y] creature without fear.
34 It observes all the lofty;
it is king over all that are proud.”[z]

9 Vana es la pretensión de llegar a someterlo;
todos ellos unidos en cerrado tejido;
16 tan juntos están uno al otro
que no dejan pasar ni el aire;
18 Resopla y lanza deslumbrantes relámpagos;
19 Ascuas de fuego brotan de su hocico;
22 En su cuello radica su fuerza;
23 Los pliegues de su piel son un tejido apretado;
firmes son e inconmovibles.
24 Duro es su pecho, como una roca;
sólido, cual piedra de molino.
25 Cuando se yergue, los poderosos tiemblan;
cuando se sacude, emprenden la huida.
26 La espada, aunque lo alcance, no lo hiere;
tampoco lo hieren los dardos
ni las lanzas y las jabalinas.
27 Al hierro lo trata como a paja
y al bronce como a madera podrida.
28 No lo hacen huir las flechas;
29 Al mazo lo considera paja;
31 Hace hervir las profundidades como un caldero;
33 Es un monstruo que a nada teme;
34 Mira con desdén a todos los poderosos;
¡él es rey de todos los soberbios!».

Complete Jewish Bible
41 (9) “Look, any hope [of capturing him] is futile —
one would fall prostrate at the very sight of him.
2 (10) No one is fierce enough to rouse him,
so who can stand up to me?
3 (11) Who has given me anything
and made me pay it back?
Everything belongs to me
under all of heaven.
4 (12) “I have more to say about his limbs,
his strong talk, and his matchless strength.
5 (13) Who can strip off his [scaly] garment?
Who can enter his jaws?
6 (14) Who can pry open the doors of his face,
so close to his terrible teeth?
7 (15) “His pride is his rows of scales,
tightly sealed together —
8 (16) one is so close to the next
that no air can come between them;
9 (17) they are stuck one to another,
interlocked and impervious.
10 (18) “When he sneezes, light flashes out;
his eyes are like the shimmer of dawn.
11 (19) From his mouth go fiery torches,
and sparks come flying out.
12 (20) His nostrils belch steam
like a caldron boiling on the fire.
13 (21) His breath sets coals ablaze;
flames pour from his mouth.
14 (22) “Strength resides in his neck,
and dismay dances ahead of him [as he goes].
15 (23) The layers of his flesh stick together;
they are firm on him, immovable.
16 (24) His heart is as hard as a stone,
yes, hard as a lower millstone.
17 (25) When he rears himself up, the gods are afraid,
beside themselves in despair.
18 (26) “If a sword touches him, it won’t stick;
neither will a spear, or a dart, or a lance.
19 (27) He regards iron as straw
and bronze as rotten wood.
20 (28) An arrow can’t make him flee;
for him, slingstones are so much chaff.
21 (29) Clubs count as hay,
and he laughs at a quivering javelin.
22 (30) His belly is as sharp as fragments of pottery,
so he moves across the mud like a threshing-sledge.
23 (31) “He makes the depths seethe like a pot,
he makes the sea [boil] like a perfume kettle.
24 (32) He leaves a shining wake behind him,
making the deep seem to have white hair.
25 (33) “On earth there is nothing like him,
a creature without fear.
26 (34) He looks straight at all high things.
He is king over all proud beasts.”

41 Možeš li Levijatana[a] izvući udicom
Zar će ga raskomadati i prodati trgovcima?
7 Možeš li mu kožu izbosti kopljima,
ili glavu ostima?
8 Dirneš li ga, zapamtit ćeš tu borbu,
i nećeš to više pokušati!
9 Zaludna je nada da se može nadvladati,
već sâm pogled na njega čovjeka obara.
10 Nitko nije toliko hrabar da ga razdraži.
Pa tko mu se može suprotstaviti?
11 On kaže: »Tko me napadne, nastradat će.
Tko god na svijetu pokuša, moj je.«
12 Neću ga ušutkati kad se hvali
svojom snagom neusporedivom.
13 Tko mu može odjeću svući
i probiti oklop dvostruki?
14 Tko se usudi otvoriti mu gubicu
okruženu zastrašujućim zubima?
15 Na leđima su mu nizovi štitova,
jedni uz druge čvrsto priljubljeni;
16 tako su blizu jedan drugome
da ni zrak između njih ne prolazi.
17 Čvrsto su jedan s drugim spojeni,
jedan uz drugog prianja i ne mogu se razdvojiti.
18 Kad kihne, svjetlost iz njega sijevne,
a oči su mu kao zraci zore.
19 Iz usta mu plamte buktinje,
vatrene iskre iz njih lete.
20 Iz nozdrva mu suklja dim,
kao iz lonca na vatri naloženoj trskom.
21 Njegov dah pali ugljen
i plamen mu iz usta suklja.
22 Silna snaga leži mu u vratu,
a pred njim ide strah.
34 On s visoka gleda na sve bahate,[c]
on je kralj nad svim oholima.
