41 [a]“Can you pull in Leviathan(A) with a fishhook(B)
or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord through its nose(C)
or pierce its jaw with a hook?(D)
3 Will it keep begging you for mercy?(E)
Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will it make an agreement with you
for you to take it as your slave for life?(F)
5 Can you make a pet of it like a bird
or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Will traders barter for it?
Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7 Can you fill its hide with harpoons
or its head with fishing spears?(G)
8 If you lay a hand on it,
you will remember the struggle and never do it again!(H)
9 Any hope of subduing it is false;
the mere sight of it is overpowering.(I)
10 No one is fierce enough to rouse it.(J)
Who then is able to stand against me?(K)
11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay?(L)
Everything under heaven belongs to me.(M)
12 “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs,(N)
its strength(O) and its graceful form.
13 Who can strip off its outer coat?
Who can penetrate its double coat of armor[b]?(P)
14 Who dares open the doors of its mouth,(Q)
ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 Its back has[c] rows of shields
tightly sealed together;(R)
16 each is so close to the next
that no air can pass between.
17 They are joined fast to one another;
they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 Its snorting throws out flashes of light;
its eyes are like the rays of dawn.(S)
19 Flames(T) stream from its mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke pours from its nostrils(U)
as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 Its breath(V) sets coals ablaze,
and flames dart from its mouth.(W)
22 Strength(X) resides in its neck;
dismay goes before it.
23 The folds of its flesh are tightly joined;
they are firm and immovable.
24 Its chest is hard as rock,
hard as a lower millstone.(Y)
25 When it rises up, the mighty are terrified;(Z)
they retreat before its thrashing.(AA)
26 The sword that reaches it has no effect,
nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.(AB)
27 Iron it treats like straw(AC)
and bronze like rotten wood.
28 Arrows do not make it flee;(AD)
slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 A club seems to it but a piece of straw;(AE)
it laughs(AF) at the rattling of the lance.
30 Its undersides are jagged potsherds,
leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.(AG)
31 It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron(AH)
and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.(AI)
32 It leaves a glistening wake behind it;
one would think the deep had white hair.
33 Nothing on earth is its equal(AJ)—
a creature without fear.
34 It looks down on all that are haughty;(AK)

2 No puedes perforarle la quijada
ni atarle el hocico.
3 ¡Un cocodrilo no va a rogarte
que le tengas compasión,
4 ni va a servirte como esclavo
por el resto de su vida!
5 Tampoco podrás jugar con él
como juegas con los pájaros,
y atarle una cuerda a una pata
para que jueguen tus hijas.
6 No se despedaza un cocodrilo
para venderlo en el mercado;
7 ¡las lanzas no le atraviesan
la piel ni la cabeza!
8 Si quieres sujetarlo,
acabarás peleando con él,
y te arrepentirás de hacerlo.
9 No tiene caso que pienses
en llegar a dominarlo;
¡con sólo verlo, caerás desmayado!

¿quién va a poder conmigo,
que soy el Dios todopoderoso?
11 ¡Mío es todo lo que hay

tiene patas muy fuertes
una piel impenetrable,
y un cuerpo enorme
que nadie puede dominar.
14 No hay quien se atreva

15-17 Su cuerpo está cubierto
con hileras de pequeños escudos,
que ni el aire dejan pasar.
18 Cuando el cocodrilo resopla,
sus ojos brillan más que el rayo
y que el sol del nuevo día;
19 de su hocico salen
chispas de lumbre y llamas de fuego;
20-21 lanza humo por la nariz

22 Es tan fuerte su cuello

23 la piel más blanda de su cuerpo

26-29 No hay arma capaz de herirlo,
pues rompe el hierro como paja,

golpearlo con un martillo
es como golpearlo con una pluma.
30 Cuando se arrastra por el lodo,
abre surcos como el arado;
31 cuando se lanza al fondo del lago,
el agua parece una olla hirviendo,
32 y a su paso va dejando
una estela blanca y brillante.
33 El cocodrilo a nadie le teme,
y no hay animal que se le parezca.

41 Siehe, die Hoffnung auf ihn wird getäuscht; wird man nicht schon bei seinem Anblick hingestreckt?
2 Niemand ist so tollkühn, dass er ihn reizen möchte; wer aber kann vor mir bestehen?
3 Wer hat mir zuvor gegeben, dass ich ihm vergelten sollte? Alles, was unter dem ganzen Himmel ist, gehört mir!
4 Ich will von seinen Gliedern nicht schweigen, sondern reden von seiner Kraftfülle und von der Schönheit seines Baus.
5 Wer kann sein Gewand aufdecken, und wer greift ihm in die Doppelreihe seiner Zähne?
6 Wer öffnet die Tore seines Rachens? Rings um seine Zähne lagert Schrecken.
7 Prächtig sind seine starken Schilder, fest zusammengeschlossen und versiegelt;
8 einer fügt sich an den anderen, sodass kein Luftzug dazwischenkommt;
9 jedes haftet fest an dem anderen, sie greifen ineinander und lassen sich nicht trennen.
10 Sein Niesen lässt Licht aufleuchten, und seine Augen sind wie die Strahlen der Morgenröte.

14 Stärke wohnt auf seinem Nacken, und Angst springt vor ihm her.
15 Die Wampen seines Fleisches haften aneinander; sie sind ihm fest angegossen, unbeweglich.
16 Sein Herz ist hart wie Stein und so fest wie der untere Mühlstein.
17 Die Helden erbeben, wenn er auffährt; vor Verzagtheit geraten sie außer sich.
18 Trifft man ihn mit dem Schwert, so hält es nicht stand, weder Speer noch Wurfspieß oder Harpune.
19 Er achtet Eisen für Stroh und Erz für faules Holz.
20 Kein Pfeil kann ihn in die Flucht schlagen, und Schleudersteine verwandeln sich ihm zu Spreu.
21 Er achtet die Keule für einen Halm und verlacht das Sausen des Wurfspießes.
22 Auf seiner Unterseite sind spitze Scherben; er zieht einen Dreschschlitten über den Schlamm dahin.

41 “Can you draw out (A)Leviathan[a] with a hook,
Or snare his tongue with a line which you lower?
2 Can you (B)put a reed through his nose,
Or pierce his jaw with a [b]hook?
3 Will he make many supplications to you?
Will he speak softly to you?
4 Will he make a covenant with you?
Will you take him as a servant forever?
5 Will you play with him as with a bird,
Or will you leash him for your maidens?
6 Will your companions [c]make a banquet of him?
Will they apportion him among the merchants?
7 Can you fill his skin with harpoons,
Or his head with fishing spears?
8 Lay your hand on him;
Remember the battle—
Never do it again!
9 Indeed, any hope of overcoming him is false;
Shall one not be overwhelmed at the sight of him?
10 No one is so fierce that he would dare stir him up.
Who then is able to stand against Me?
11 (C)Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him?
(D)Everything under heaven is Mine.
12 “I will not [d]conceal his limbs,
His mighty power, or his graceful proportions.

Slingstones become like stubble to him.
29 Darts are regarded as straw;
He laughs at the threat of javelins.
30 His undersides are like sharp potsherds;
He spreads pointed marks in the mire.
31 He makes the deep boil like a pot;
He makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 He leaves a shining wake behind him;
One would think the deep had white hair.
33 On earth there is nothing like him,
Which is made without fear.
34 He beholds every high thing;
He is king over all the children of pride.”
