41 Can you pull in Leviathan(A) with a hook(B)
or tie his tongue down with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord[a] through his nose
or pierce his jaw with a hook?(C)
3 Will he beg you for mercy
or speak softly to you?
4 Will he make a covenant with you
so that you can take him as a slave forever?(D)
5 Can you play with him like a bird
or put him on a leash[b] for your girls?
6 Will traders bargain for him
or divide him among the merchants?
7 Can you fill his hide with harpoons
or his head with fishing spears?
8 Lay a[c] hand on him.
You will remember the battle
and never repeat it!
9 Any hope of capturing him proves false.
Does a person not collapse at the very sight of him?
10 No one is ferocious enough to rouse Leviathan;(E)
who then can stand against me?
11 Who confronted me, that I should repay him?
Everything under heaven belongs to me.(F)
12 I cannot be silent about his limbs,
his power, and his graceful proportions.
13 Who can strip off his outer covering?
Who can penetrate his double layer of armor?[d](G)
14 Who can open his jaws,[e]
surrounded by those terrifying teeth?
15 His pride is in his rows of scales,
closely sealed together.
16 One scale is so close to another[f]
that no air can pass between them.
17 They are joined to one another,
so closely connected[g] they cannot be separated.
18 His snorting[h] flashes with light,
while his eyes are like the rays[i] of dawn.
19 Flaming torches shoot from his mouth;
fiery sparks fly out!
20 Smoke billows from his nostrils(H)
as from a boiling pot or burning reeds.
21 His breath sets coals ablaze,
and flames pour out of his mouth.
22 Strength resides in his neck,
and dismay dances before him.
23 The folds of his flesh are joined together,
solid as metal[j] and immovable.
24 His heart is as hard as a rock,
as hard as a lower millstone!
25 When Leviathan rises, the mighty[k] are terrified;
they withdraw because of his thrashing.
26 The sword that reaches him will have no effect,
nor will a spear, dart, or arrow.
27 He regards iron as straw,
and bronze as rotten wood.
28 No arrow can make him flee;
slingstones become like stubble to him.
29 A club is regarded as stubble,
and he laughs(I) at the sound of a javelin.
30 His undersides are jagged potsherds,
spreading the mud like a threshing sledge.(J)
31 He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron;
he makes the sea like an ointment jar.
32 He leaves a shining wake behind him;[l]
one would think the deep had gray hair!
33 He has no equal on earth—
a creature devoid of fear!
34 He surveys everything that is haughty;
he is king over all the proud beasts.[m]

41 Ingen vågar reta honom eller ge sig på honom. Om ingen kan klara av honom, vem vågar då träda fram inför mig?
2 Jag är inte skyldig någon något. Allting under himlen är mitt.
3 Jag ska inte glömma att nämna den oerhörda styrka han besitter.
4 Vem kan tränga igenom hans hud, och vem vågar komma inom räckhåll för hans käftar?
5 Hans tänder är fruktansvärda.
6 Fjällen som täcker hans rygg
7-8 sluter så tätt intill varandra att ingen luft kan tränga in mellan dem och ingenting kan skilja dem åt.
9 När han frustar är det som eld. Hans ögon glöder som kol.
10 Eld kommer ut ur hans mun.
11 Rök kommer ur hans näsborrar, som ånga från kokande vatten.
12 Hans andedräkt kan antända kol, och lågor väller fram ur hans mun.
13 Den väldiga styrkan i hans nacke skapar förskräckelse var han än drar fram.
14 Hans hull är fast och utan fett.
15 Hans bröst är hårt som sten, ja, som en kvarnsten.
16 När han sträcker på sig, blir även de starkaste rädda och stela av fasa.
17 Varken svärd, spjut, pil eller pansar kan hindra honom.
18 Järn är som ett strå för honom, och koppar som murket trä.
19 Inga pilar biter på honom. Slungstenar kittlar honom som grässtrån.
20 Klubbor gör ingen nytta, och han skrattar åt lansar som riktas mot honom.
21 Hans buk är täckt med fjäll, skarpa som krukskärvor, och han lämnar efter sig ett spår som av tröskjärn.
22 Han får vattnet att koka och djupen att sjuda bara genom att röra på sig.
23 Han lämnar ett gnistrande skum efter sig, som om vattenytan var täckt av frost!
24 Hans like finns inte på hela jorden.
25 Ingen finns som är stoltare, han är kung över allt han ser.

3 Will it keep begging you for mercy?(E)
Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will it make an agreement with you
for you to take it as your slave for life?(F)
5 Can you make a pet of it like a bird
or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Will traders barter for it?
Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7 Can you fill its hide with harpoons
or its head with fishing spears?(G)
8 If you lay a hand on it,
you will remember the struggle and never do it again!(H)
9 Any hope of subduing it is false;
the mere sight of it is overpowering.(I)
10 No one is fierce enough to rouse it.(J)
Who then is able to stand against me?(K)
11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay?(L)
Everything under heaven belongs to me.(M)
12 “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs,(N)
its strength(O) and its graceful form.
13 Who can strip off its outer coat?

14 Who dares open the doors of its mouth,(Q)
ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 Its back has[c] rows of shields
tightly sealed together;(R)
16 each is so close to the next
that no air can pass between.
17 They are joined fast to one another;
they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 Its snorting throws out flashes of light;
its eyes are like the rays of dawn.(S)
19 Flames(T) stream from its mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.

one would think the deep had white hair.
