41 Det er håbløst at forsøge at fange den.
Synet af den er nok til, at modet forsvinder.
2 Når ingen tør kæmpe mod dette mægtige dyr,
hvem tør da kæmpe imod mig?
3 Hvem tør sige, at jeg skylder dem noget?
Alt i hele verden tilhører mig.
4 Lad mig beskrive Livjatans krop.
Den er velformet med enorme lemmer og vældig styrke.
5 Hvem kan flå huden af den
eller trænge ind under dens panser?
6 Hvem kan åbne munden på den,
så man ser de frygtindgydende tænder?
7 Ryggen er dækket af rækker af plader,
der beskytter den fuldstændigt som skjolde.
8 Pladerne sidder så tæt,
at intet kan trænge ind imellem dem.
9 De overlapper hinanden,
og det er umuligt at skille dem ad.
10 Når den fnyser, er det som lysglimt,
øjnene gløder som en solopgang.
11 Flammer står ud af munden på den,
et fyrværkeri af gnister.
12 Damp kommer ud ad dens næsebor
som fra en kedel med kogende vand.
13 Dens ånde får kul til at gløde,
fra gabet spruder den ild.
14 Halsmusklerne er utroligt stærke,
den skaber rædsel overalt, hvor den kommer.
15 Dens bug er hård og fast,
den kan modstå ethvert angreb.
16 Dens hjerte er hårdt som sten,
urokkeligt som en møllesten.
17 Går den til angreb, gyser de stærkeste helte,
de løber rædselsslagne deres vej.
18 Det er nytteløst at kæmpe imod den med sværd,
hverken spyd, pil eller lanse kan bruges.
19 Den bøjer jernstænger, som var det strå,
bronze splintrer den som råddent træ.
20 Pile kan ikke jage den på flugt,
og sten preller af som ingenting.
21 Stridskøller har ingen virkning,
og kastespyd ler den blot ad.
22 Dens bug er dækket af skarpe skæl,
som sætter dybe spor i jorden.
23 Flodvandet pisker den i kog,
det bobler som i en gryde.
24 Kølvandet er som en glinsende sti,
en stribe af sølvhvidt skum.
25 Der findes ingen skabning på jorden,
der er så frygtløs som den.
26 Den har intet at være bange for,
den er det stolteste dyr på jorden.”

41 “Can you catch Leviathan[a] on a fishhook?
Or can you tie his tongue down with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord through his nose
or put a hook in his jaw?
3 Will he keep begging you for mercy?
Will he speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will he make an agreement with you?
Will he let you take him as your slave for life?
5 Can you make a pet of Leviathan as you would a bird?
Or can you put him on a leash for your girls?
6 Will traders try to bargain with you for him?
Will they divide him up among the traders?
7 Can you stick him with darts until his skin is full of them?
Or can you fill his head with fishing spears?
8 If you put one hand on him,
you will never forget the battle.
And you will never do it again!
9 There is no hope of defeating him.
Just seeing him overwhelms people.
10 No one is brave enough to make him angry.
So who would be able to stand up against me?
11 No one has ever given me anything that I must pay back.
Everything under heaven belongs to me.
12 “I can silence his bragging.
I can silence his brave words and powerful arguments.
13 No one can tear off his outer hide.
No one can poke through his double armor.
14 No one can force open his great jaws.
There are frightening teeth all around his jaws.
15 He has rows of shields on his back.
They are tightly sealed together.
16 Each shield is so close to the next one
that no air can go between them.
17 They are joined strongly to one another.
They hold on to each other and cannot be broken apart.
18 When he snorts, flashes of light are thrown out.
His eyes look like the light at dawn.
19 Flames blaze from his mouth.
Sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke pours out of his nose
as if coming from a large pot over a hot fire.
21 His breath sets coals on fire.
And flames come out of his mouth.
22 There is great strength in his neck.
People are afraid and run away from him.
23 The folds of his skin are tightly joined.
They are set and cannot be moved.
24 His chest is as hard as a rock.
It is as hard as a stone used to grind grain.
25 Powerful creatures fear his terrible looks.
They draw back in fear as he moves.
26 The sword that hits him does not hurt him.
The darts and spears, small and large, do not hurt him.
27 He treats iron as if it were straw.
And he treats bronze metal as if it were rotten wood.
28 He does not run away from arrows.
Stones from slings are like chaff to him.
29 Clubs feel like pieces of straw to him.
And he laughs when they shake a spear at him.
30 The underside of his body is like broken pieces of pottery.
It leaves a trail in the mud like a threshing board.
31 He makes the deep sea bubble like a boiling pot.
And he stirs up the sea like a pot of oil.
32 When he swims, he leaves a shining path in the water.
It makes the sea look as if it had white hair.
33 Nothing else on earth is equal to him.
He is a creature without fear.
34 He looks down on all those who are too proud.
He is king over all proud creatures.”

¿Lo tomarás como siervo para siempre?
5 ¿Jugarás con él como con un pájaro,
o lo atarás para tus doncellas?
6 ¿Traficarán con él los comerciantes[e]?
¿Lo repartirán entre los mercaderes?
7 ¿Podrás llenar su piel de arpones,
o de lanzas de pescar su cabeza?
8 Pon tu mano[f] sobre él;
te acordarás de la batalla y no lo volverás a hacer[g].
9 [h]He aquí, falsa es tu[i] esperanza;
con solo verlo serás[j] derribado.
10 Nadie hay tan audaz que lo despierte(C);
¿quién, pues, podrá estar delante de mí?

Cuanto existe debajo de todo el cielo es mío(E).
12 No dejaré de hablar de sus miembros,
ni de su gran poder, ni de su agraciada figura.
13 ¿Quién lo desnudará de su armadura exterior[l]?
¿Quién penetrará su doble malla[m]?
14 ¿Quién abrirá las puertas de sus fauces[n]?
Alrededor de sus dientes hay terror.
15 Sus fuertes escamas[o] son su orgullo,
cerradas como con apretado sello.
16 La una está tan cerca de la otra
que el aire no puede penetrar entre ellas.
17 Unidas están una a la otra;
se traban entre sí y no pueden separarse.
18 Sus estornudos dan destellos de luz,
y sus ojos son como los párpados del alba(F).
19 De su boca salen antorchas,
chispas de fuego saltan.
20 De sus narices sale humo,
como de una olla que hierve sobre[p] juncos encendidos.
21 Su aliento enciende carbones,
y una llama sale de su boca.
22 En su cuello reside el poder,
y salta el desaliento delante de él.
23 Unidos están los pliegues de su carne,
firmes están en él e inamovibles.
24 Su corazón es duro como piedra,
duro como piedra de molino.
25 Cuando él se levanta, los poderosos[q] tiemblan;
a causa del estruendo quedan confundidos.
26 La espada que lo alcance no puede prevalecer,
ni la lanza, el dardo, o la jabalina.
27 Estima el hierro como paja,
el bronce como madera carcomida.
28 No lo hace huir la flecha[r];
en hojarasca se convierten para él las piedras de la honda.
29 Como hojarasca son estimadas las mazas;
se ríe del blandir de la jabalina.
30 Por debajo[s] tiene como tiestos puntiagudos;
se extiende[t] como trillo sobre el lodo.
31 Hace hervir las profundidades como olla;
hace el mar como redoma de ungüento.
32 Detrás de sí hace brillar una estela;
se diría que el abismo es canoso.
33 Nada en la tierra[u] es semejante a él(G),
que fue hecho sin temor.
34 [v]Desafía[w] a todo ser altivo;
él es rey sobre todos los hijos de orgullo(H).

Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will it make an agreement with you
for you to take it as your slave for life?(F)
5 Can you make a pet of it like a bird
or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Will traders barter for it?
Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7 Can you fill its hide with harpoons
or its head with fishing spears?(G)
8 If you lay a hand on it,
you will remember the struggle and never do it again!(H)
9 Any hope of subduing it is false;
the mere sight of it is overpowering.(I)

2 Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?
3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?
4 Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
5 Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
7 Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?
8 Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?

26 The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
27 He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.
29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.
31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.
33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
