Job 40
Lexham English Bible
40 Then[a] Yahweh answered Job and said,
2 “Shall a faultfinder contend with Shaddai?
Anyone who argues with God must answer it.”
Job Responds to Yahweh
3 So Job answered Yahweh and said,
4 “Look, I am insignificant.
What shall I answer you?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
5 Once I have spoken, and I will not answer;
even[b] twice, but[c] I will not proceed.”
Yahweh Challenges Job Again
6 Then[d] Yahweh answered Job from the storm, and he said,
7 “Prepare yourself for a difficult task like a man,[e]
and I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
Yahweh Interrogates Job Again
8 “Indeed, would you annul my justice?
Would you condemn me, so that you might be righteous?
9 Or do you have an arm like God,
and can you thunder with a voice like his?
10 Adorn[f] yourself with pride and dignity,
and clothe yourself with splendor.
11 Pour out the overflowing of your anger,
and look at all the proud, and humble them.
12 Look at all the proud, humble them,
and tread down the wicked where they stand.[g]
13 Hide them in the dust together;
bind their faces in the grave.
14 And I will also praise you,
that your own right hand can save you.
15 “Look, Behemoth,[h] which I have made just as I made you;
it eats grass like the ox.
16 Look, its strength is in its loins
and its power in the muscles of its stomach.
17 It keeps its tail straight like a cedar;
the sinews of its thighs are tightly wound.
18 Its bones are tubes of copper,
its limbs like rods of iron.
19 “It is the first of God’s actions;
the one who made him furnishes it with his sword.[i]
20 Yes, the mountains yield produce for it,
and all wild animals[j] play there.
21 Under the lotus tree it lies,
in the hiding place of the reeds and in the marsh.
22 The lotus trees cover it with their shade;
the wadi’s[k] poplar trees surround it.
23 Look, if the river is turbulent, it is not frightened;
it is confident even though the Jordan rushes against its mouth.
24 Can anyone take it by its eyes?
Can he pierce its nose with a snare?

5 Hablé una vez y no voy a responder;
hablé otra vez y no voy a insistir».
7 «Prepárate a hacerme frente.
Yo te cuestionaré y tú me responderás.
8 »¿Vas acaso a invalidar mi justicia?
¿Me condenarás para justificarte?
9 ¿Tienes acaso un brazo como el mío?
¿Puede tu voz tronar como la mía?
10 Si es así, cúbrete de gloria y esplendor;
revístete de honra y majestad.
11 Da rienda suelta a la furia de tu ira;
mira a los orgullosos y humíllalos;
12 mira a los soberbios y somételos;
aplasta a los malvados donde se hallen.
13 Entiérralos a todos en el polvo;
17 Su rabo se mece como un cedro;
los tendones de sus muslos se entrelazan.
18 Sus huesos son como barras de bronce;
sus piernas parecen barrotes de hierro.
19 Entre mis obras ocupa el primer lugar;
20 Los montes le brindan sus frutos;
allí juguetean todos los animales salvajes.
21 Debajo de las plantas de lotos se tiende a descansar;
se oculta entre los juncos del pantano.
22 Los lotos le brindan su sombra;
los álamos junto al río lo envuelven.
23 No se alarma si brama el río;

Complete Jewish Bible
40 Continuing to address Iyov, Adonai said:
2 “Does the critic still want to dispute Shaddai?
Let him who wants to correct God give an answer!”
3 Then Iyov replied to Adonai:
4 “I am too ashamed; I have nothing to say.
I lay my hand over my mouth.
5 Yes, I spoke once, but I won’t answer more;
all right, twice, but I won’t go on.”
6 Adonai answered Iyov out of the storm:
7 “Stand up like a man, and brace yourself;
I will ask questions; and you, give the answers!
8 “Are you impugning my justice?
Putting me in the wrong to prove yourself right?
9 Do you have an arm like God’s?
Can you thunder with a voice like his?
10 Come on, deck yourself with majesty and dignity,
robe yourself in glory and splendor.
11 Let loose your furious anger,
look at all who are proud, and humble them.
12 Look at all who are proud, and bring them down;
tread down the wicked where they stand.
13 Bury them in the ground together,
bind their faces in the hidden world.
14 If you do this, then I will confess to you
that your own power can save you.
15 “Now consider Behemot, whom I made along with you.
He eats grass like an ox.
16 What strength he has in his loins!
What power in his stomach muscles!
17 He can make his tail as stiff as a cedar,
the muscles in his thighs are like cables,
18 his bones are like bronze pipes,
his limbs like iron bars.
19 “He ranks first among God’s works.
Only his maker can approach him with his sword.
20 The mountains produce food for him there,
where all the wild animals play.
21 He lies down under the thorny lotus bushes
and is hidden by the reeds in the swamp;
22 the lotus bushes cover him with their shade,
and the willows by the stream surround him.
23 If the river overflows, it doesn’t worry him;
he is confident even if the Yarden rushes by his mouth.
24 Can anyone catch him by his eyes
or pierce his nose with a hook?
25 (41:1) “And Livyatan! Can you catch him with a fishhook
or hold his tongue down with a rope?
26 (41:2) Can you put a ring in his nose
or pierce his jaw with a barb?
27 (41:3) Will he entreat you at length?
Will he speak with you softly?
28 (41:4) Will he agree with you
to be your slave forever?
29 (41:5) Will you play with him as you would with a bird
or keep him on a string to amuse your little girls?
30 (41:6) Will a group of fishermen turn him into a banquet?
Will they divide him among the merchants?
31 (41:7) Can you fill his skin with darts
or his head with fish-spears?
32 (41:8) If you lay your hand on him,
you won’t forget the fight, and you’ll never do it again!
Job 40
Biblija: suvremeni hrvatski prijevod
40 Zatim je BOG rekao Jobu:
2 »Zar će ispravljati Svemoćnoga
onaj tko se s njim prepire?
Neka odgovori Bogu onaj tko ga optužuje!«
3 A Job je odgovorio BOGU:
4 »Da, nedostojan sam—kako da ti odgovorim?
Stavljam svoju ruku preko usta.
5 Jednom sam nešto rekao, ali više neću;
govorio sam dvaput i odsada šutim.«
6 Tada je BOG rekao Jobu iz oluje:
7 »Brani se kao čovjek,
pitat ću te, a ti mi odgovori.
8 Zar bi osporio i moju pravdu?
Mene bi osudio da sebe opravdaš?
9 Zar ti je ruka poput Božje
i zar ti glas grmi kao njegov?
10 Okiti se onda slavom i sjajem,
odjeni se u čast i veličanstvo.
11 Izlij žestinu svoje srdžbe,
pogledaj sve ohole i obori ih.
12 Pogledaj sve bahate i ponizi ih,
opake satri na mjestu.
13 Sve ih zajedno zakopaj u prašinu,
zarobi ih u grobu.
14 Tada ću te i ja hvaliti
jer te tvoja desnica spasila.
15 Pogledaj behemota[a],
koga sam stvorio zajedno s tobom.
20 Hranu mu donose bregovi,
gdje se sve divlje zvijeri igraju.
21 On pod lotosom leži,
među močvarnom trskom skriven.
22 Lotosi ga sjenom zaklanjaju,
