39 ¿Sabes tú el tiempo en que paren las cabras monteses? ¿O miraste tú las ciervas cuando están pariendo?
2 ¿Contaste tú los meses de su preñez, y sabes el tiempo cuando han de parir?
3 Como se encorvan, tienen sus hijos, pasan sus dolores.
4 Sus hijos son sanos, crecen con el grano; salen y nunca más vuelven a ellas.
5 ¿Quién echó libre al asno montés, y quién soltó sus ataduras?
6 Al cual yo puse casa en la soledad, y sus moradas en la tierra salada.
7 Se ríe de la multitud de la ciudad; no oye las voces del que demanda los peajes.
8 Rebusca los montes para su pasto, y anda buscando todo lo que está verde.
9 ¿Por ventura querrá el unicornio servirte a ti, ni quedar a tu pesebre?
10 ¿Atarás tú al unicornio con su coyunda para el surco? ¿Labrará los valles en pos de ti?
11 ¿Por ventura confiarás tú en él, por ser grande su fortaleza, y le fiarás tu labor?
12 ¿Fiarás de él que te tornará tu simiente, y que la allegará en tu era?
13 ¿Diste tú hermosas alas al pavo real, o alas y plumas al avestruz?
14 El cual desampara en la tierra sus huevos, y sobre el polvo los calienta,
15 y se olvida de que los pisará el pie, y que los quebrará alguna bestia del campo.
16 Se endurece para con sus hijos, como si no fueran suyos, no temiendo que su trabajo haya sido en vano;
17 porque Dios lo hizo olvidar de sabiduría, y no le dio entendimiento.
18 A su tiempo se levanta en alto, y se burla del caballo y del que se monta en él.
19 ¿Diste tú al caballo la fortaleza? ¿Vestiste tú su cerviz de relincho?
20 ¿Por ventura le harás tú saltar como a alguna langosta? El resoplido de su nariz es formidable;
21 escarba la tierra, se alegra en su fuerza, sale al encuentro de las armas;
22 hace burla del espanto, y no teme, ni vuelve el rostro delante de la espada.
23 Contra él suena la aljaba, el resplandor de la lanza y de la pica;
24 y él con ímpetu y furor escarba la tierra, sin importarle el sonido del shofar;
25 antes los toques de shofar le infunden ánimo; y desde lejos huele la batalla, el estruendo de los príncipes, y el estruendo de la consigna de la batalla.
26 ¿Por ventura vuela el gavilán por tu industria, y extiende hacia el mediodía sus alas?
27 ¿Por ventura enaltece el águila por tu mandamiento, y pone en alto su nido?
28 Ella habita y está en la piedra, en la cumbre del peñasco y de la roca.
29 Desde allí acecha la comida; sus ojos observan de muy lejos.
30 Sus polluelos chupan la sangre; y donde hubiere muertos, allí está.

39 »¿Sabes cuándo las cabras monteses tienen sus crías?
¿Has visto el parto de las gacelas?
2 ¿Has contado los meses de su gestación?
¿Sabes cuándo dan a luz?
3 Al tener sus crías se encorvan
y allí terminan sus dolores de parto.
4 Se fortalecen sus crías y crecen a campo abierto;
luego se van y ya no vuelven.
5 »¿Quién deja sueltos a los asnos salvajes?
¿Quién desata sus cuerdas?
6 Yo les di la llanura del desierto por morada,
el yermo por hábitat.
7 Se burlan del tumulto de la ciudad;
no prestan atención a los gritos del arriero.
8 Recorren los cerros en busca de pastos,
en busca de verdes prados.
9 »¿Crees tú que el toro salvaje se prestará a servirte?
¿Pasará la noche en tus establos?
10 ¿Puedes mantenerlo en el surco con el arnés?
¿Irá en pos de ti labrando los valles?
11 ¿Pondrás tu confianza en su tremenda fuerza?
¿Echarás sobre sus lomos tu pesado trabajo?
12 ¿Puedes confiar en él para que acarree tu grano
y lo junte en el lugar donde lo limpias?
13 »El avestruz bate alegremente sus alas,
pero su plumaje no es como el de la cigüeña.[a]
14 Pone sus huevos en la tierra,
los deja empollar en la arena,
15 sin que le importe que algún pie los pueda aplastar
o que las bestias salvajes los pisoteen.
16 Maltrata a sus polluelos como si no fueran suyos
y no le importa haber trabajado en vano,
17 pues Dios no le dio sabiduría
ni le impartió su porción de buen juicio.
18 Pero, cuando extiende sus alas y corre,
se ríe de jinetes y caballos.
19 »¿Le has dado al caballo su fuerza?
¿Has cubierto su cuello con largas crines?
20 ¿Eres tú quien lo hace saltar como langosta,
con su orgulloso resoplido que infunde terror?
21 Patalea con furia, regocijándose en su fuerza,
y se lanza al galope a la batalla.
22 Se burla del miedo; a nada teme;
no rehúye hacerle frente a la espada.
23 En torno suyo silban las flechas,
brillan las lanzas y las jabalinas.
24 En frenética carrera devora las distancias;
al toque de trompeta no es posible refrenarlo.
25 En cuanto suena la trompeta, resopla desafiante;
percibe desde lejos el fragor[b] de la batalla,
los gritos de los comandantes y las órdenes de ataque.
26 »¿Es tu sabiduría la que hace que el gavilán vuele
y que hacia el sur extienda sus alas?
27 ¿Acaso por tus órdenes remonta el vuelo el águila
y construye su nido en las alturas?
28 Habita en los riscos; allí pasa la noche;
en escarpadas grietas tiene su baluarte.
29 Desde allí acecha la presa;
sus ojos la detectan desde lejos.
30 Sus polluelos se regodean en la sangre;
donde hay un cadáver, allí está él».

39 “Do you know when the mountain goats(A) give birth?
Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn?(B)
2 Do you count the months till they bear?
Do you know the time they give birth?(C)
3 They crouch down and bring forth their young;
their labor pains are ended.
4 Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds;
they leave and do not return.
5 “Who let the wild donkey(D) go free?
Who untied its ropes?
6 I gave it the wasteland(E) as its home,
the salt flats(F) as its habitat.(G)
7 It laughs(H) at the commotion in the town;
it does not hear a driver’s shout.(I)
8 It ranges the hills(J) for its pasture
and searches for any green thing.
9 “Will the wild ox(K) consent to serve you?(L)
Will it stay by your manger(M) at night?
10 Can you hold it to the furrow with a harness?(N)
Will it till the valleys behind you?
11 Will you rely on it for its great strength?(O)
Will you leave your heavy work to it?
12 Can you trust it to haul in your grain
and bring it to your threshing floor?
13 “The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully,
though they cannot compare
with the wings and feathers of the stork.(P)
14 She lays her eggs on the ground
and lets them warm in the sand,
15 unmindful that a foot may crush them,
that some wild animal may trample them.(Q)
16 She treats her young harshly,(R) as if they were not hers;
she cares not that her labor was in vain,
17 for God did not endow her with wisdom
or give her a share of good sense.(S)
18 Yet when she spreads her feathers to run,
she laughs(T) at horse and rider.
19 “Do you give the horse its strength(U)
or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
20 Do you make it leap like a locust,(V)
striking terror(W) with its proud snorting?(X)
21 It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,(Y)
and charges into the fray.(Z)
22 It laughs(AA) at fear, afraid of nothing;
it does not shy away from the sword.
23 The quiver(AB) rattles against its side,
along with the flashing spear(AC) and lance.
24 In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;
it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.(AD)
25 At the blast of the trumpet(AE) it snorts, ‘Aha!’
It catches the scent of battle from afar,
the shout of commanders and the battle cry.(AF)
26 “Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom
and spread its wings toward the south?(AG)
27 Does the eagle soar at your command
and build its nest on high?(AH)
28 It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night;
a rocky crag(AI) is its stronghold.
29 From there it looks for food;(AJ)
its eyes detect it from afar.
30 Its young ones feast on blood,

39 “Will you hunt the prey for the lion? Or fill the appetite of the lion’s whelps
2 “when they crouch in their places, and remain in the lair to lie in wait?
3 “Who provides game for the raven when its offspring cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
4 “Do you know the time when the wild goats bring forth young? Do you mark when the hinds calve?
5 “Can you number the months that they fulfill? Or do you know the time when they bring forth?
6 “They bow themselves. They bruise their young and cast out their sorrows.
7 “Their young grow fat and grow up with grain. They go forth and do not return to them.
8 “Who has set the wild donkey at liberty? Or who has loosed the bonds of the wild donkey,
9 “who has made the wilderness his house, and the salt places his dwellings?
10 He derides the multitude of the city. He does not hear the cry of the driver.
11 “He seeks out the mountain for his pasture, and searches after every green thing.
12 “Will the wild ox serve you? Or will he wait by your crib?
13 “Can you bind the wild ox with his band in the furrow? Or will he plow the valleys after you?
14 “Will you trust in him, because his strength is great, and cast off your labor to him?
15 “Will you believe in him, that he will bring home your seed and gather it into your barn?
16 “Did you give the pleasant wings to the peacocks, or wings and feathers to the ostrich,
17 “which leaves its eggs in the earth, and makes them warm in the dust,
18 “and forgets that the foot might scatter them, or that the wild beast might break them?
19 “She shows herself cruel to her young ones, as if they were not hers. Yet, she is without concern, though she travailed in vain.
20 “For God has deprived her of wisdom and has given her no part of understanding.
21 “When time, she mounts on high. She mocks the horse and its rider.
22 “Have you given the horse strength, covered its neck with a mane?
23 “Have you made him afraid, as the grasshopper? His strong snorting is fearful.
24 “He digs in the valley and rejoices in strength. He goes forth to meet the armoured.
25 “He mocks at fear, and is not afraid, and does not turn back from the sword.
26 “The quiver rattles against him and the glittering spear and the shield.
27 “He swallows the ground from fierceness and rage, and he does not believe that it is the noise of the trumpet.
28 “He says among the trumpets, ‘Ha, ha!’ He smells the battle far off, and the noise of the captains, and the shouting.
29 “Shall the hawk fly by your wisdom, his wings toward the South?
30 “Does the eagle mount up at your commandment, or make his nest on high?
31 “She abides and remains in the rock, upon the top of the rock, and the tower.
32 “From there she spies for food. Her eyes look far away.
33 “Her young ones also suck up blood. And where the slain are, there she is.”
34 Moreover the LORD spoke to Job, and said,
35 “Shall he who strives with the Almighty instruct? He who reproves God, let him answer for it.”
36 Then Job answered the LORD, saying,
37 “Behold, I am vile. What shall I answer You? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.
38 “I have spoken once, but I will answer no more. Indeed, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
