God antwoordt Job vanuit het onweer (vervolg)
39 Kun jij een prooi jagen voor een oude leeuw?
Kun jij de jonge leeuwen te eten geven?
2 Kun jij hun honger stillen als ze weggedoken liggen in hun holen,
of als ze in de struiken op de loer liggen?
3 Wie zorgt ervoor dat de raven te eten hebben?
Als hun jongen hongerig door het nest kruipen en om eten roepen,
wie zorgt er dan voor dat ze te eten krijgen?
4 Weet jij wanneer de jongen van de berggeiten geboren moeten worden?
Heb jij herten wel eens jongen zien krijgen?
5 Weet jij hoeveel maanden ze zwanger zijn?
Weet jij wanneer die tijd om is?
6 Weet jij wanneer ze hun jongen ter wereld brengen
en ze met moeite naar buiten persen?
7 De jongen worden sterk en groeien op in het veld.
Op een dag gaan ze weg en komen niet meer bij hun moeder terug.
8 Wie heeft de wilde ezel de vrijheid gegeven?
Wie heeft ervoor gezorgd dat hij in het wild kon leven?
9 Ik heb hem de woestijn als woonplaats aangewezen.
Ik liet hem wonen bij de zoutvlakten.
10 Hij heeft niets te maken met de drukte van de stad.
Hij wordt door niemand opgejaagd om sneller te lopen.
11 Hij graast op de bergen
en zoekt malse groene plantjes.
12 Zou een wilde buffel voor jou willen werken?
Zou hij 's nachts bij de voerbakken in je stal willen staan?
13 Kun jij hem dwingen het land voor je om te ploegen?
Zal hij achter je aanlopen om stenen voor je uit de grond te sleuren?
14 Kun je op hem vertrouwen omdat het zo'n sterk dier is?
Laat je hem voor je zwoegen?
15 Reken je er op dat hij je oogst wel voor je binnen zal halen?
Dat hij het naar de plaats zal brengen
waar de graankorrels uit de aren worden geklopt?
16 Heb jij de pauwen hun prachtige veren gegeven?
Of vleugels aan de ooievaars en struisvogels?
17 Een struisvogel legt haar eieren gewoon in de grond
en laat het aan het warme zand over om ze uit te broeden.
18 Ze vergeet dat iemand ze zou kunnen vertrappen
en dat de wilde dieren ze zouden kunnen opeten.
19 Ze behandelt haar jongen hard, alsof ze niet van haar zijn.
Het maakt haar niet uit als ze voor niets eieren heeft gelegd.
20 Want Ik heb haar geen wijsheid gegeven.
Ik heb haar nu eenmaal niet verstandig gemaakt.
21 Wanneer ze van de grond opstaat,
rent ze sneller dan paarden en ruiters en lacht hen uit.
22 Kun jij een paard sterk maken?
Heb jij de golvende manen op zijn nek laten groeien?
23 Kun jij ervoor zorgen dat het zo goed springt als een sprinkhaan?
Iedereen is bang als het trots briest!
24 Vrolijk woelt het met zijn hoeven de grond om.
Krachtig stort het zich in de strijd.
25 Een paard kent geen angst en is nergens bang voor.
Het vlucht niet voor het zwaard.
26 Boven hem rammelt de pijlkoker.
Boven hem flikkeren lans en speer.
27 Razendsnel galoppeert het over de bodem.
Het is niet te houden als de ramshoorn klinkt.
28 Het hinnikt, elke keer als er op de ramshoorn wordt geblazen.
Al van grote afstand ruikt het paard de strijd
en hoort het geroep van de aanvoerders en het krijgsgeschreeuw.
29 Is het aan jouw wijsheid te danken dat een sperwer vliegt?
Dat hij zijn vleugels uitslaat naar het zuiden?
30 Heb jij de arend bevel gegeven om op te stijgen
en zijn nest hoog op de rots te bouwen?
31 Hij woont en slaapt hoog op de rots,
op rotsen en bergtoppen.
32 Van daar speurt hij naar eten.
Zijn ogen turen in de verte.
33 Zijn jongen slurpen bloed.
Waar doden liggen, is de arend te vinden.
34 En de Heer zei tegen Job:
35 Wil jij die alles zo goed weet,
de Almachtige God beschuldigen?
Antwoord Mij!
Job antwoordt God
36 Toen antwoordde Job:
37 Ik ben helemaal niemand.
Hoe zou ik U kunnen antwoorden?
Ik leg mijn hand op mijn mond en zwijg.
38 Ik heb één keer gesproken,
en dat was al te veel.
Ik durf geen tweede keer te spreken.

39 “Do you know the time when the wild (A)mountain goats bear young?
Or can you mark when (B)the deer gives birth?
2 Can you number the months that they fulfill?
Or do you know the time when they bear young?
3 They bow down,
They bring forth their young,
They deliver their [a]offspring.
4 Their young ones are healthy,
They grow strong with grain;
They depart and do not return to them.
5 “Who set the wild donkey free?
Who loosed the bonds of the [b]onager,
6 (C)Whose home I have made the wilderness,
And the [c]barren land his dwelling?
7 He scorns the tumult of the city;
He does not heed the shouts of the driver.
8 The range of the mountains is his pasture,
And he searches after (D)every green thing.
9 “Will the (E)wild ox be willing to serve you?
Will he bed by your manger?
10 Can you bind the wild ox in the furrow with ropes?
Or will he plow the valleys behind you?
11 Will you trust him because his strength is great?
Or will you leave your labor to him?
12 Will you trust him to bring home your [d]grain,
And gather it to your threshing floor?
13 “The wings of the ostrich wave proudly,
But are her wings and pinions like the kindly stork’s?
14 For she leaves her eggs on the ground,
And warms them in the dust;
15 She forgets that a foot may crush them,
Or that a wild beast may break them.
16 She (F)treats her young harshly, as though they were not hers;
Her labor is in vain, without [e]concern,
17 Because God deprived her of wisdom,
And did not (G)endow her with understanding.
18 When she lifts herself on high,
She scorns the horse and its rider.
19 “Have you given the horse strength?
Have you clothed his neck with [f]thunder?
20 Can you [g]frighten him like a locust?
His majestic snorting strikes terror.
21 He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength;
(H)He gallops into the clash of arms.
22 He mocks at fear, and is not frightened;
Nor does he turn back from the sword.
23 The quiver rattles against him,
The glittering spear and javelin.
24 He devours the distance with fierceness and rage;
Nor does he come to a halt because the trumpet has sounded.
25 At the blast of the trumpet he says, ‘Aha!’
He smells the battle from afar,
The thunder of captains and shouting.
26 “Does the hawk fly by your wisdom,
And spread its wings toward the south?
27 Does the (I)eagle mount up at your command,
And (J)make its nest on high?
28 On the rock it dwells and resides,
On the crag of the rock and the stronghold.
29 From there it spies out the prey;
Its eyes observe from afar.
30 Its young ones suck up blood;
And (K)where the slain are, there it is.”

39 “Do you know when (A)the mountain goats give birth?
Do you observe (B)the calving of the does?
2 Can you number the months that they fulfill,
and do you know the time when they give birth,
3 when they (C)crouch, bring forth their offspring,
and are delivered of their young?
4 Their young ones become strong; they grow up in the open;
they go out and (D)do not return to them.
5 “Who has let the wild donkey go free?
Who has (E)loosed the bonds of the swift donkey,
6 to whom I have given (F)the arid plain for his home
and (G)the salt land for his dwelling place?
7 He scorns the tumult of the city;
he hears not the shouts of the driver.
8 He ranges the mountains as his pasture,
and he searches after every green thing.
9 “Is (H)the wild ox willing to serve you?
Will he spend the night at your (I)manger?
10 Can you bind (J)him in the furrow with ropes,
or will he harrow the valleys after you?
11 Will you depend on him because his strength is great,
and will you leave to him your labor?
12 Do you have faith in him that he will return your grain
and gather it to your threshing floor?
13 “The wings of the ostrich wave proudly,
but are they the pinions and plumage of love?[a]
14 For she leaves her eggs to the earth
and lets them be warmed on the ground,
15 forgetting that a foot may crush them
and that the wild beast may trample them.
16 She (K)deals cruelly with her young, as if they were not hers;
though her (L)labor be in vain, yet she has no fear,
17 because God has made her forget wisdom
and (M)given her no share in understanding.
18 When she rouses herself to flee,[b]
she laughs at the horse and his rider.
19 “Do you give the horse his might?
Do you clothe his neck with a mane?
20 Do you make him leap like the locust?
His majestic (N)snorting is terrifying.
21 He paws[c] in the valley and exults in his strength;
he (O)goes out to meet the weapons.
22 He laughs at fear and is not dismayed;
he does not turn back from the sword.
23 Upon him rattle the quiver,
the flashing spear, and the javelin.
24 With fierceness and rage he swallows the ground;
he cannot stand still at (P)the sound of the trumpet.
25 When the trumpet sounds, he says ‘Aha!’
He smells the battle from afar,
the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
26 “Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars
and spreads his wings toward the south?
27 Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up
and makes his (Q)nest on high?
28 On the rock he dwells and makes his home,
on (R)the rocky crag and stronghold.
29 From there he spies out the prey;
his eyes behold it from far away.
30 His young ones suck up blood,
and (S)where the slain are, there is he.”
