The Lord Challenges Job
38 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:
2 “Who is this that questions my wisdom
with such ignorant words?
3 Brace yourself like a man,
because I have some questions for you,
and you must answer them.
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell me, if you know so much.
5 Who determined its dimensions
and stretched out the surveying line?
6 What supports its foundations,
and who laid its cornerstone
7 as the morning stars sang together
and all the angels[a] shouted for joy?
8 “Who kept the sea inside its boundaries
as it burst from the womb,
9 and as I clothed it with clouds
and wrapped it in thick darkness?
10 For I locked it behind barred gates,
limiting its shores.
11 I said, ‘This far and no farther will you come.
Here your proud waves must stop!’
12 “Have you ever commanded the morning to appear
and caused the dawn to rise in the east?
13 Have you made daylight spread to the ends of the earth,
to bring an end to the night’s wickedness?
14 As the light approaches,
the earth takes shape like clay pressed beneath a seal;
it is robed in brilliant colors.[b]
15 The light disturbs the wicked
and stops the arm that is raised in violence.
16 “Have you explored the springs from which the seas come?
Have you explored their depths?
17 Do you know where the gates of death are located?
Have you seen the gates of utter gloom?
18 Do you realize the extent of the earth?
Tell me about it if you know!
19 “Where does light come from,
and where does darkness go?
20 Can you take each to its home?
Do you know how to get there?
21 But of course you know all this!
For you were born before it was all created,
and you are so very experienced!
22 “Have you visited the storehouses of the snow
or seen the storehouses of hail?
23 (I have reserved them as weapons for the time of trouble,
for the day of battle and war.)
24 Where is the path to the source of light?
Where is the home of the east wind?
25 “Who created a channel for the torrents of rain?
Who laid out the path for the lightning?
26 Who makes the rain fall on barren land,
in a desert where no one lives?
27 Who sends rain to satisfy the parched ground
and make the tender grass spring up?
28 “Does the rain have a father?
Who gives birth to the dew?
29 Who is the mother of the ice?
Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens?
30 For the water turns to ice as hard as rock,
and the surface of the water freezes.
31 “Can you direct the movement of the stars—
binding the cluster of the Pleiades
or loosening the cords of Orion?
32 Can you direct the constellations through the seasons
or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens?
33 Do you know the laws of the universe?
Can you use them to regulate the earth?
34 “Can you shout to the clouds
and make it rain?
35 Can you make lightning appear
and cause it to strike as you direct?
36 Who gives intuition to the heart
and instinct to the mind?
37 Who is wise enough to count all the clouds?
Who can tilt the water jars of heaven
38 when the parched ground is dry
and the soil has hardened into clods?
39 “Can you stalk prey for a lioness
and satisfy the young lions’ appetites
40 as they lie in their dens
or crouch in the thicket?
41 Who provides food for the ravens
when their young cry out to God
and wander about in hunger?

El Señor responde a Job
38 El Señor le respondió a Job desde el torbellino:
2 «¿Quién se atreve a oscurecer mis designios
con palabras carentes de sentido?
3 Pórtate como hombre, y prepárate;
yo te voy a preguntar, y tú me vas a responder.
4 »¿Dónde estabas tú, cuando yo afirmé la tierra?
Si en verdad sabes mucho, dímelo.
5 Dime también, si lo sabes, ¿quién tomó sus medidas?
¿O quién la midió palmo a palmo?
6 ¿Sobre qué están sentadas sus bases?
¿Quién puso su piedra angular
7 mientras cantaban las estrellas del alba
y los seres celestiales se regocijaban?
8 »Cuando las aguas del mar se desbordaban,
¿quién les puso compuertas para controlarlas?
9 Cuando yo cubrí el mar de nubes blancas,
y lo envolví en una densa oscuridad,
10 establecí para el mar este decreto
que ponía límite a sus movimientos:
11 “Podrás llegar hasta aquí, pero no más allá.
Hasta aquí llegarán tus orgullosas olas.”(A)
12 »¿Alguna vez le has dado órdenes a la mañana?
¿Le has señalado al alba cuál es su lugar,
13 para que tome los extremos de la tierra
y se sacuda de encima a los malvados?
14 Con el alba, la tierra cambia de aspecto
y se reviste con tonos de lacre para sello;
15 pero si se les quita su luz a los malvados,
éstos pierden su fuerza y son vencidos.
16 »¿Has bajado alguna vez al fondo del mar?
¿Has recorrido los senderos del abismo?
17 ¿Se te han revelado las puertas de la muerte?
¿Has visto el umbral del reino de las sombras?
18 ¿Has calculado la extensión de la tierra?
¡Hazme saber si sabes todo esto!
19 »¿Sabes cómo llegar a la casa de la luz?
¿O en qué lugar se resguardan las tinieblas?
20 ¡Entonces puedes guiarlas hasta sus fronteras
y mostrarles la senda que conduce a su casa!
21 ¡Claro que lo sabes, pues ya habías nacido!
¡Son muchos los años que has vivido!
22 »¿Has entrado en los depósitos de la nieve?
¿Has visto dónde está almacenado el granizo?
23 Yo los guardo para momentos angustiosos,
para los días de combate y de batalla.
24 ¿De qué manera se difunde la luz?
¿Cómo se esparce el viento solano sobre la tierra?
25 »¿Quién le abrió el camino al aluvión,
y con él a los truenos y relámpagos
26 que descargan su furia en los páramos
y en desiertos que nadie habita?
27 Con la lluvia sacia su sed el desierto,
y brota en el desierto la tierna hierba.
28 »¿Quién es el padre de la lluvia?
¿Quién da origen a las gotas de rocío?
29 ¿Del vientre de qué madre sale el hielo?
¿Quién da origen a la escarcha?
30 ¿Cómo es que el agua se endurece como piedra,
y la superficie del mar profundo se congela?
31 »¿Puedes atar los lazos de las Pléyades,
o desatar las ataduras de Orión?(B)
32 ¿Puedes sacar las constelaciones a su tiempo,
o guiar a la Osa Mayor y a sus cachorros?
33 ¿Conoces acaso las leyes de los cielos?
¿Puedes controlar su potestad en la tierra?
34 »¿Puedes dar órdenes a las nubes,
y hacer que te cubra un torrente de lluvia?
35 ¿Puedes marcar la ruta de los relámpagos,
y hacer que ellos se pongan a tus órdenes?
36 »¿Quién le dio sabiduría al ibis?
¿Quién le dio inteligencia al gallo?
37 ¿Quién con tanta sabiduría cuenta las nubes?
¿Y quién derrama las aguas de los cielos
38 para reblandecer los duros terrones
cuando éstos se pegan por falta de humedad?
39 »¿Te atreverías a cazar la presa para el león?
¿Te atreverías a saciar el hambre de sus cachorros,
40 que tendidos en sus cuevas
esperan impacientes la hora de comer?
41 ¿Quién alimenta al cuervo y sus polluelos,
cuando éstos saltan de un lado a otro
y graznan hambrientos pidiendo a Dios su comida?
