38 Majd felele az Úr Jóbnak a forgószélbõl és monda:
2 Ki az, a ki elhomályosítja az örök rendet tudatlan beszéddel?
3 Nosza övezd fel, mint férfiú derekadat, én majd kérdezlek, te meg taníts engem!
4 Hol voltál, mikor a földnek alapot vetettem? Mondd meg, ha tudsz valami okosat!
5 Ki határozta meg mértékeit, ugyan tudod-é; avagy ki húzta el felette a mérõ zsinórt?
6 Mire bocsátották le oszlopait, avagy ki vetette fel szegeletkövét;
7 Mikor együtt örvendezének a hajnalcsillagok, és Istennek minden fiai vigadozának?
8 És [kicsoda] zárta el ajtókkal a tengert, a mikor elõtünt, az anyaméhbõl kijött;
9 Mikor ruházatává a felhõt tevém, takarójául pedig a sürû homályt?
10 Mikor reávontam törvényemet, zárat és ajtókat veték eléje:
11 És azt mondám: Eddig jõjj és ne tovább; ez itt ellene áll kevély habjaidnak!
12 Parancsoltál-é a reggelnek, a mióta megvagy? Kimutattad-é a hajnalnak a helyét?
13 Hogy belefogózzék a földnek széleibe, és lerázassanak a gonoszok róla.
14 Hogy átváltozzék mint a megpecsételt agyag, és elõálljon, mint egy ruhában.
15 Hogy a gonoszoktól elvétessék világosságuk, és a fölemelt kar összetöressék?
16 Eljutottál-é a tenger forrásáig, bejártad-é a mélységnek fenekét?
17 Megnyíltak-é néked a halálnak kapui; a halál árnyékának kapuit láttad-é?
18 Áttekintetted-é a föld szélességét, mondd meg, ha mindezt jól tudod?
19 Melyik út [visz] oda, hol a világosság lakik, és a sötétségnek hol van a helye?
20 Hogy visszavinnéd azt az õ határába, és hogy megismernéd lakása útjait.
21 Tudod te ezt, hiszen már akkor megszülettél; napjaidnak száma nagy!
22 Eljutottál-é a hónak tárházához; vagy a jégesõnek tárházát láttad-é?
23 A mit fentartottam a szükség idejére, a harcz és háború napjára?
24 Melyik út [visz oda], a hol szétoszlik a világosság, és szétterjed a keleti szél a földön?
25 Ki hasított nyílást a záporesõnek, és a mennydörgõ villámnak útat?
26 Hogy aláessék az ember nélkül való földre, a pusztaságra, holott senki sincsen;
27 Hogy megitasson pusztát, sivatagot, és hogy sarjaszszon zsenge pázsitot?
28 Van-é atyja az esõnek, és ki szülte a harmat cseppjeit?
29 Kinek méhébõl jött elõ a jég, és az ég daráját kicsoda szülte?
30 [Miként] rejtõznek el a vizek mintegy kõ [alá,] és [mint] zárul be a mély vizek színe?
31 Összekötheted-é a fiastyúk szálait; a kaszáscsillag köteleit megoldhatod-é?
32 A hajnalcsillagot elõhozhatod-é az õ idejében, avagy a gönczölszekeret forgathatod-é fiával együtt?
33 Ismered-é az ég törvényeit, vagy te határozod-é meg uralmát a földön?
34 Felemelheted-é szavadat a felhõig, hogy a vizeknek bõsége beborítson téged?
35 Kibocsáthatod-é a villámokat, hogy elmenjenek, vagy mondják-é néked: Itt vagyunk?
36 Ki helyezett bölcseséget a setét felhõkbe, vagy a tüneményeknek ki adott értelmet?
37 Ki számlálta meg a bárányfelhõket bölcseséggel, és ki üríti ki az égnek tömlõit;
38 Mikor a por híg sárrá változik, és a göröngyök összetapadnak?

38 Toen gaf de Here Job vanuit een storm zijn antwoord:
2 ‘Wie is het die door onzinnig gepraat mijn besluiten onbegrijpelijk probeert te maken?
3 Maak u maar klaar, zet u schrap, want Ik ga u vragen stellen om te zien wat u weet.
4 Waar was u toen Ik het fundament legde voor deze aarde? Zeg het Mij, u weet immers zoveel!
5 Weet u hoe haar afmetingen werden vastgesteld en wie dat alles heeft nagemeten? Kom, vertel op!
6,7 Waarop steunen de fundamenten en wie plaatste de hoekstenen, terwijl de morgensterren samen zongen en alle engelen juichten van blijdschap?
8,9 Wie stelde de grenzen van de zeeën vast toen zij vanuit het verborgene omhoogspoten? Wie hulde hen in dikke wolken en diepe duisternis,
10 sloot hen in door hun kusten vast te stellen
11 en zei: “Tot zover en niet verder! Hier zullen uw trotse golven tot stilstand komen”?
12 Hebt u ooit een nieuwe morgen opgeroepen en de zonsopgang in het oosten laten verschijnen?
13 Hebt u het daglicht ooit bevolen zich tot de uithoeken van de aarde te verspreiden om zo een eind te maken aan het nachtelijk werk van de goddelozen?
14 De aarde krijgt haar vorm zoals een zegel een klomp klei vormt, het oppervlak golft als de plooien van een kledingstuk.
15 Zo worden de goddelozen gestoord in hun praktijken en wordt een halt toegeroepen aan de arm die klaar stond om toe te slaan.
16 Bent u doorgedrongen tot de bronnen van de zee en hebt u de spelonken van haar onpeilbare diepte bezocht?
17,18 Heeft men u verteld waar u de poorten van het dodenrijk kunt vinden? Hebt u ook maar enig begrip van de afmetingen van de aarde? Vertel het Mij maar als u het weet!
19 Waar komt het licht vandaan en hoe kunt u daar komen? Of vertel Mij iets over de duisternis. Waar komt die vandaan?
20 Kunt u haar grenzen bepalen of de plaats waar zij vandaan komt?
21 Maar dat weet u natuurlijk allemaal al lang. Want u werd geboren voordat alles werd geschapen en u heeft zoʼn lange ervaring!
22,23 Bent u in de opslagplaatsen van de sneeuw geweest of hebt u gezien waar de hagel wordt gemaakt en opgeslagen ligt? De sneeuw en hagel die Ik heb bewaard voor de tijd van oorlog en rampen.
24 Waar loopt de weg naar het punt waar het licht zich verdeelt? En waar ligt de oorsprong van de oostenwind?
25-27 Wie groef het kanaal voor de stortregens? Wie baande een weg voor het onweer en zorgde ervoor dat de regen in barre woestijnen neervalt, zodat de gescheurde en troosteloze bodem wordt doordrenkt met water en het jonge gras weer kan opschieten?
28 Heeft de regen een vader? Waar komen de dauwdruppels vandaan?
29 Wie is de moeder van het ijs en van de rijp die neerdaalt uit de hemel?
30 Hoe komt het dat water verandert in ijs, dat zo hard is als steen?
31 Kunt u de Pleiaden aan elkaar vastbinden of de ketens van Orion losmaken?
32 Kunt u de dierenriem op tijd laten schijnen en de Grote en Kleine Beer de weg wijzen?
33 Kent u de wetten van het heelal en kunt u bepalen welke invloed zij op de aarde uitoefenen?
34 Kunt u tot de wolken roepen en ervoor zorgen dat u doordrenkt wordt met regen?
35 Kunt u de bliksem tevoorschijn roepen, die u dan vraagt: “Waar moet ik inslaan”?
36 Wie heeft wijsheid gelegd in de wolken en aan de regen inzicht gegeven?
37,38 Wie is wijs genoeg om de wolken te tellen en ze als waterkruiken uit te gieten, zodat het stof op de aarde tot harde klei wordt?’

The Lord Speaks
38 Then the Lord spoke to Job(A) out of the storm.(B) He said:
2 “Who is this that obscures my plans(C)
with words without knowledge?(D)
3 Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.(E)
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?(F)
Tell me, if you understand.(G)
5 Who marked off its dimensions?(H) Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line(I) across it?
6 On what were its footings set,(J)
or who laid its cornerstone(K)—
7 while the morning stars(L) sang together(M)
and all the angels[a](N) shouted for joy?(O)
8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors(P)
when it burst forth from the womb,(Q)
9 when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,(R)
10 when I fixed limits for it(S)
and set its doors and bars in place,(T)
11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;(U)
here is where your proud waves halt’?(V)
12 “Have you ever given orders to the morning,(W)
or shown the dawn its place,(X)
13 that it might take the earth by the edges
and shake the wicked(Y) out of it?(Z)
14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;(AA)
its features stand out like those of a garment.
15 The wicked are denied their light,(AB)
and their upraised arm is broken.(AC)
16 “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?(AD)
17 Have the gates of death(AE) been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?(AF)
18 Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?(AG)
Tell me, if you know all this.(AH)
19 “What is the way to the abode of light?
And where does darkness reside?(AI)
20 Can you take them to their places?
Do you know the paths(AJ) to their dwellings?
21 Surely you know, for you were already born!(AK)
You have lived so many years!
22 “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow(AL)
or seen the storehouses(AM) of the hail,(AN)
23 which I reserve for times of trouble,(AO)
for days of war and battle?(AP)
24 What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,(AQ)
or the place where the east winds(AR) are scattered over the earth?(AS)
25 Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,
and a path for the thunderstorm,(AT)
26 to water(AU) a land where no one lives,
an uninhabited desert,(AV)
27 to satisfy a desolate wasteland
and make it sprout with grass?(AW)
28 Does the rain have a father?(AX)
Who fathers the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb comes the ice?
Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens(AY)
30 when the waters become hard as stone,
when the surface of the deep is frozen?(AZ)
31 “Can you bind the chains[b] of the Pleiades?
Can you loosen Orion’s belt?(BA)
32 Can you bring forth the constellations(BB) in their seasons[c]
or lead out the Bear[d] with its cubs?(BC)
33 Do you know the laws(BD) of the heavens?(BE)
Can you set up God’s[e] dominion over the earth?
34 “Can you raise your voice to the clouds
and cover yourself with a flood of water?(BF)
35 Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?(BG)
Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who gives the ibis wisdom[f](BH)
or gives the rooster understanding?[g](BI)
37 Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?
Who can tip over the water jars(BJ) of the heavens(BK)
38 when the dust becomes hard(BL)
and the clods of earth stick together?(BM)
