Dieu évoque son œuvre de création et sa providence
38 Alors, du sein de la tempête, l’Eternel répondit à Job :
2 Qui donc obscurcit mes desseins
par des discours sans connaissance ?
3 Mets ta ceinture, comme un brave :
je vais te poser des questions ╵et tu m’enseigneras[a].
4 Où étais-tu quand je posai ╵les fondations du monde[b] ?
Déclare-le, ╵puisque ta science est si profonde !
5 Qui en a fixé les mesures, ╵le sais-tu donc ?
Qui a tendu sur lui ╵le cordeau d’arpenteur ?
6 Dans quoi les socles ╵de ses colonnes ╵s’enfoncent-ils ?
Qui en posa ╵la pierre principale d’angle,
7 quand les étoiles du matin[c] ╵éclataient, unanimes, ╵dans des chants d’allégresse,
et que tous les anges de Dieu[d] ╵poussaient des cris de joie ?
8 Qui enferma la mer ╵par une porte à deux battants
lorsqu’elle jaillit du sein maternel ?
9 lorsque je fis, de la nuée, ╵son vêtement,
et de l’obscurité ses langes,
10 quand je lui imposai ma loi,
quand je plaçai verrous et portes
11 en lui disant : ╵« C’est jusqu’ici que tu iras, ╵et pas plus loin,
ici s’arrêteront ╵tes flots impétueux » ?
12 As-tu, un seul jour de ta vie, ╵commandé au matin
et assigné sa place à l’aube
13 pour qu’elle se saisisse ╵des extrémités de la terre
et qu’elle en secoue les méchants[e] ?
14 Alors, la terre est transformée ╵comme l’argile sous l’empreinte[f],
et toutes choses sont parées ╵comme d’un vêtement.
15 Mais les méchants ╵se voient privés de leur lumière
et le bras levé est brisé.
16 Es-tu parvenu jusqu’aux sources ╵qui font jaillir les mers ?
Ou t’es-tu promené ╵dans les profondeurs de l’abîme ?
17 Les portes de la mort ╵ont-elles paru devant toi ?
As-tu vu les accès ╵du royaume des épaisses ténèbres ?
18 As-tu embrassé du regard ╵l’étendue de la terre ?
Dis-le, si tu sais tout cela.
19 De quel côté est le chemin ╵vers le séjour de la lumière,
et les ténèbres, ╵où donc ont-elles leur demeure,
20 pour que tu puisses les saisir ╵là où elles se séparent[g]
et bien comprendre les sentiers ╵de leur habitation ?
21 Tu dois connaître tout cela, ╵puisque tu étais déjà né,
et que tes jours sont si nombreux !
22 As-tu visité les greniers ╵qui recèlent la neige,
et les dépôts de grêle, ╵les as-tu vus ?
23 Je les tiens en réserve ╵pour les temps de détresse,
les jours de lutte et de combat[h].
24 Par quelle voie ╵se répand la lumière ?
Par où le vent d’orient ╵envahit-il la terre ?
25 Qui ouvre le passage ╵pour les torrents de pluie ?
Qui a frayé la voie ╵aux éclairs de l’orage ╵tonitruant,
26 faisant tomber la pluie ╵sur une terre inhabitée,
sur un désert inoccupé,
27 pour arroser les solitudes ╵et les régions arides,
et pour y faire germer l’herbe ?
28 La pluie a-t-elle un père ?
Et qui donc a fait naître ╵les gouttes de rosée ?
29 De quel sein sort la glace,
qui a donné naissance ╵au blanc frimas du ciel,
30 lorsque les eaux durcissent ╵pour devenir comme la pierre
et que se fige ╵la surface des lacs profonds ?
31 Peux-tu nouer ╵les cordes des Pléiades
ou desserrer ╵les cordages d’Orion[i] ?
32 Fais-tu paraître ╵les constellations en leur temps ?
Conduis-tu la Grande Ourse ╵et ses étoiles secondaires ?
33 Sais-tu par quelles lois ╵le ciel est gouverné ?
Est-ce toi qui imposes ╵son pouvoir sur la terre ?
34 Te suffit-il ╵de parler aux nuages
pour que des trombes d’eau ╵se déversent sur toi ?
35 Les éclairs partent-ils ╵à ton commandement
te disant : « Nous voici » ?
36 Qui a implanté la sagesse ╵au cœur de l’homme
et le discernement ╵en son esprit[j] ?
37 Qui a la compétence ╵pour compter les nuages
et qui peut incliner ╵les amphores du ciel
38 pour agréger ╵en glèbe la poussière,
et pour coller ╵les mottes de la terre ?
Dieu évoque le règne animal
39 Peux-tu chasser la proie ╵pour la lionne ?
Apaises-tu la faim ╵des lionceaux
40 quand ils sont tous tapis ╵au fond de leurs tanières,
quand ils sont à l’affût ╵dans les taillis épais ?
41 Qui donc prépare ╵au corbeau sa pâture
quand ses oisillons crient vers Dieu,
et sont errants, sans nourriture ?

2 ¿Quién es este que oscurece el consejo
con palabras sin conocimiento(B)?
3 Ciñe ahora tus lomos como un hombre(C),
y yo te preguntaré, y tú me instruirás(D).
4 ¿Dónde estabas tú cuando yo echaba los cimientos de la tierra(E)?
Dímelo, si tienes[a] inteligencia.
5 ¿Quién puso sus medidas(F)?, ya que sabes,
¿o quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
6 ¿Sobre qué se asientan sus basas(G),
o quién puso su piedra angular
7 cuando cantaban juntas las estrellas del alba,
y todos los hijos de Dios(H) gritaban de gozo?
8 ¿O quién encerró con puertas el mar(I),
cuando, irrumpiendo, se salió de su seno;
9 cuando hice de una nube su vestidura,
y de espesa oscuridad sus pañales;
10 cuando sobre él establecí límites[b],
puse puertas(J) y cerrojos,
11 y dije: «Hasta aquí llegarás, pero no más allá;
aquí se detendrá el orgullo de tus olas»?
12 ¿Alguna vez en tu vida[c] has mandado a la mañana,
y hecho conocer al alba su lugar,
13 para que ella eche mano a los confines de la tierra(K),
y de ella sean sacudidos los impíos(L)?
14 Ella cambia como barro bajo el sello;
y como con vestidura se presenta[d].
15 Mas se quita la luz a los impíos(M),
y se quiebra el brazo levantado(N).
16 ¿Has entrado hasta las fuentes del mar,
o andado en las profundidades[e] del abismo(O)?
17 ¿Te han sido reveladas las puertas de la muerte,
o has visto las puertas de la densa oscuridad(P)?
18 ¿Has comprendido la extensión[f] de la tierra(Q)?
Dímelo, si tú sabes todo esto.
19 ¿Dónde está el camino a la morada de la luz?
Y la oscuridad, ¿dónde está su lugar,
20 para que la lleves a su territorio(R),
y para que disciernas los senderos de su casa?
21 ¡Tú lo sabes, porque entonces ya habías nacido(S),
y grande es el número de tus días!
22 ¿Has entrado en los depósitos de la nieve(T),
o has visto los depósitos del granizo(U),
23 que he reservado para el tiempo de angustia,
para el día de guerra y de batalla?
24 ¿Dónde está el camino en que se divide la luz(V),
o el viento solano esparcido sobre la tierra?
25 ¿Quién ha abierto un canal para el turbión,
o un camino para el rayo,
26 para traer lluvia(W) sobre tierra despoblada[g],
sobre un desierto sin hombre alguno,
27 para saciar la tierra desierta y desolada,
y hacer brotar las semillas[h](X) de la hierba?
28 ¿Tiene padre la lluvia(Y)?
¿Quién ha engendrado las gotas de rocío?
29 ¿Del vientre de quién ha salido el hielo(Z)?
Y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la ha dado a luz?
30 El agua se endurece[i] como la piedra,
y aprisionada está la superficie del abismo.
31 ¿Puedes tú atar las cadenas de las Pléyades,
o desatar las cuerdas de Orión(AA)?
32 ¿Haces aparecer una constelación[j] a su tiempo,
y conduces la Osa con sus hijos?
33 ¿Conoces tú las ordenanzas de los cielos,
o fijas su dominio en la tierra(AB)?
34 ¿Puedes levantar tu voz a las nubes,
para que abundancia de agua te cubra(AC)?
35 ¿Envías los relámpagos para que vayan
y te digan: «Aquí estamos(AD)»?
36 ¿Quién ha puesto sabiduría en lo más íntimo del ser(AE),
o ha dado a la mente[k] inteligencia(AF)?
37 ¿Quién puede contar las nubes con sabiduría,
o inclinar los odres de los cielos(AG),
38 cuando el polvo en masa se endurece,
y los terrones se pegan entre sí?
39 ¿Puedes cazar la presa para la leona,
o saciar el apetito de los leoncillos(AH),
40 cuando se agachan en sus madrigueras,
o están al acecho en sus guaridas(AI)?
41 ¿Quién prepara para el cuervo su alimento,
cuando sus crías claman a Dios,

3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

14 It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
15 And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
17 Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
19 Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
20 That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
21 Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24 By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
25 Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
26 To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28 Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
29 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
30 The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
31 Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
32 Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?
36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
38 When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
39 Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

2 “Who is this that obscures my plans(C)
with words without knowledge?(D)
3 Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.(E)
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?(F)
Tell me, if you understand.(G)
5 Who marked off its dimensions?(H) Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line(I) across it?
6 On what were its footings set,(J)
or who laid its cornerstone(K)—
7 while the morning stars(L) sang together(M)
and all the angels[a](N) shouted for joy?(O)
8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors(P)
when it burst forth from the womb,(Q)
9 when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,(R)
10 when I fixed limits for it(S)
and set its doors and bars in place,(T)
