God Speaks Now to Job
38 Then the Lord (A)answered Job from the whirlwind and said,
2 “Who is this who (B)darkens the divine plan
By words without knowledge?
3 Now [a](C)tighten the belt on your waist like a man,
And (D)I shall ask you, and you inform Me!
4 Where were you (E)when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you [b]have understanding,
5 Who set its (F)measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the measuring line over it?
6 On what (G)were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together
And all the (H)sons of God shouted for joy?
8 “Or who (I)enclosed the sea with doors
When it went out from the womb, bursting forth;
9 When I made a cloud its garment,
And thick darkness its swaddling bands,
10 And I [c](J)placed boundaries on it
And set a bolt and doors,
11 And I said, ‘As far as this point you shall come, but no farther;
And here your proud waves shall stop’?
God’s Mighty Power
12 “Have you [d]ever in your life commanded the morning,
And made the dawn know its place,
13 So that it would take hold of (K)the ends of the earth,
And (L)the wicked would be shaken off from it?
14 It is changed like clay under the seal;
And they stand out like a garment.
15 (M)Their light is withheld from the wicked,
And the (N)uplifted arm is broken.
16 “Have you entered (O)the springs of the sea,
And walked [e]in the depth of the ocean?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
And have you seen the gates of (P)deep darkness?
18 Have you understood the [f]expanse of (Q)the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this.
19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And darkness, where is its place,
20 That you would take it to (R)its territory,
And discern the paths to its [g]home?
21 You know, for (S)you were born then,
And the number of your days is great!
22 Have you entered the storehouses (T)of the snow,
And have you seen the storehouses of the (U)hail,
23 Which I have reserved for a time of distress,
For a day of war and battle?
24 Where is the way that (V)the light is divided,
And the east wind scattered on the earth?
25 “Who has split open a channel for the flood,
And a way for the thunderbolt,
26 To bring (W)rain on a land without [h]people,
On a desert without a person in it,
27 To (X)satisfy the waste and desolate land,
And to make the [i]seeds of grass to sprout?
28 Does (Y)the rain have a father?
Or who has fathered the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb has come the (Z)ice?
And the frost of heaven, who has given it birth?
30 Water [j]becomes hard like stone,
And the surface of the deep is imprisoned.
31 “Can you tie up the chains of the (AA)Pleiades,
Or untie the cords of Orion?
32 Can you bring out a [k]constellation in its season,
And guide the Bear with her [l]satellites?
33 Do you know the (AB)ordinances of the heavens,
Or do you establish their rule over the earth?
34 “Can you raise your voice to the clouds,
So that an (AC)abundance of water will cover you?
35 Can you (AD)send flashes of lightning, so that they may go
And say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who has (AE)put wisdom in the innermost being,
Or given (AF)understanding to the [m]mind?
37 Who can count the clouds by wisdom,
And (AG)pour out the water jars of the heavens,
38 When the dust hardens into a mass
And the clods stick together?
39 “Can you hunt the (AH)prey for the lioness,
Or satisfy the appetite of young lions,
40 When they (AI)crouch in their hiding places,
And lie in wait in their lair?
41 Who prepares [n]feed for (AJ)the raven
When its young cry to God,
And wander about without food?

Deus responde a Jó e mostra-lhe sua grandeza e sabedoria
38 Depois disto, o Senhor respondeu a Jó de um redemoinho e disse: 2 Quem é este que escurece o conselho com palavras sem conhecimento? 3 Agora cinge os teus lombos como homem; e perguntar-te-ei, e, tu, responde-me.
4 Onde estavas tu quando eu fundava a terra? Faze-mo saber, se tens inteligência. 5 Quem lhe pôs as medidas, se tu o sabes? Ou quem estendeu sobre ela o cordel? 6 Sobre que estão fundadas as suas bases, ou quem assentou a sua pedra de esquina, 7 quando as estrelas da alva juntas alegremente cantavam, e todos os filhos de Deus rejubilavam?
8 Ou quem encerrou o mar com portas, quando trasbordou e saiu da madre, 9 quando eu pus as nuvens por sua vestidura e, a escuridão, por envolvedouro? 10 Quando passei sobre ele o meu decreto, e lhe pus portas e ferrolhos, 11 e disse: Até aqui virás, e não mais adiante, e aqui se quebrarão as tuas ondas empoladas?
12 Ou desde os teus dias deste ordem à madrugada ou mostraste à alva o seu lugar, 13 para que agarrasse nas extremidades da terra, e os ímpios fossem sacudidos dela? 14 Tudo se modela como o barro sob o selo e se põe como vestes; 15 e dos ímpios se desvia a sua luz, e o braço altivo se quebranta.
16 Ou entraste tu até às origens do mar, ou passeaste no mais profundo do abismo? 17 Ou descobriram-se-te as portas da morte, ou viste as portas da sombra da morte? 18 Ou com o teu entendimento chegaste às larguras da terra? Faze-mo saber, se sabes tudo isto.
19 Onde está o caminho da morada da luz? E, quanto às trevas, onde está o seu lugar, 20 para que as tragas aos seus limites, e para que saibas as veredas da sua casa? 21 Decerto, tu o sabes, porque já então eras nascido, e porque é grande o número dos teus dias!
22 Ou entraste tu até aos tesouros da neve e viste os tesouros da saraiva, 23 que eu retenho até ao tempo da angústia, até ao dia da peleja e da guerra?
24 Onde está o caminho em que se reparte a luz, e se espalha o vento oriental sobre a terra? 25 Quem abriu para a inundação um leito e um caminho para os relâmpagos dos trovões, 26 para chover sobre uma terra onde não há ninguém e no deserto, em que não há gente; 27 para fartar a terra deserta e assolada e para fazer crescer os renovos da erva? 28 A chuva, porventura, tem pai? Ou quem gera as gotas do orvalho? 29 De que ventre procede o gelo? E quem gera a geada do céu, 30 quando debaixo de pedras as águas se escondem, e a superfície do abismo se coalha?
31 Ou poderás tu ajuntar as cadeias do Sete-estrelo ou soltar os atilhos do Órion? 32 Ou produzir as constelações a seu tempo e guiar a Ursa com seus filhos? 33 Sabes tu as ordenanças dos céus, ou podes dispor do domínio deles sobre a terra?
34 Ou podes levantar a tua voz até às nuvens, para que a abundância das águas te cubra? 35 Ou ordenarás aos raios que saiam e te digam: Eis-nos aqui? 36 Quem pôs a sabedoria no íntimo, ou quem à mente deu o entendimento? 37 Quem numerará as nuvens pela sabedoria? Ou os odres dos céus, quem os abaixará, 38 quando se funde o pó numa massa, e se pegam os torrões uns aos outros?
39 Porventura, caçarás tu presa para a leoa ou satisfarás a fome dos filhos dos leões, 40 quando se agacham nos covis e estão à espreita nas covas? 41 Quem prepara para os corvos o seu alimento, quando os seus pintainhos gritam a Deus e andam vagueando, por não terem que comer?

Der mächtige Schöpfer
38 Dann aber redete der Herr mit Hiob. Er antwortete ihm aus dem Sturm:
2 »Wer bist du, dass du meine Weisheit anzweifelst
mit Worten ohne Verstand?
3 Tritt mir gegenüber wie ein Mann
und gib mir Antwort auf meine Fragen!
4 Wo warst du,
als ich das Fundament der Erde legte?
Sag es doch, wenn du so viel weißt!
5 Wer hat ihre Maße festgelegt
und wer die Messschnur über sie gespannt?
Du weißt es doch, oder etwa nicht?
6 Worin sind die Pfeiler der Erde eingesenkt,
und wer hat ihren Grundstein gelegt?
7 Damals sangen alle Morgensterne,
und die Gottessöhne jubelten vor Freude.
8 Wer schloss die Schleusentore,
um das Meer zurückzuhalten,
als es hervorbrach aus dem Mutterschoß der Erde?
9 Ich hüllte es in Wolken
und in dichtes Dunkel wie in Windeln;
10 ich setzte dem Meer eine Grenze,
schloss seine Tore und Riegel
11 und sprach:
›Bis hierher sollst du kommen und nicht weiter!
Hier müssen sich deine mächtigen Wogen legen!‹
12 Sag, hast du je das Tageslicht herbeigerufen
und der Morgenröte ihren Weg gewiesen?
13 Sie fasst die Erde bei den Zipfeln
und schüttelt die Übeltäter von ihr ab.
14 In ihrem Licht färbt die Erde sich bunt wie ein Kleid;
ihre Gestalt tritt hervor,
deutlich wie ein Siegelabdruck auf Ton.
15 Dann wird den Übeltätern das schützende Dunkel[a] genommen,
und ihr drohend erhobener Arm wird zerbrochen.
16 Bist du hinab zu den Quellen des Meeres gereist,
hast du den Abgrund des Ozeans durchwandert?
17 Haben sich dir die Tore des Todes geöffnet,
die den Eingang ins dunkle Land verschließen?
18 Hast du die Weiten der Erde überblickt?
Sag es mir, wenn du das alles weißt!
19 Woher kommt das Licht,
und wie gelangt man dorthin?
Woher kommt die Finsternis?
20 Kannst du Licht und Dunkelheit an ihre Orte bringen,
kennst du den Weg zu ihrem Land?
21 Ganz gewiss, denn du warst schon geboren,
als ich sie schuf, du lebst ja seit uralten Zeiten!
22 Hast du die Vorratskammern gesehen,
in denen ich Schnee und Hagel aufbewahre?
23 Ich spare sie auf für den Unglückstag,
für Kriegszeiten und Schlachtgetümmel.
24 Weißt du, wo das Licht herkommt
und von wo der Ostwind loszieht?
Wie gelangt man dorthin?
25 Wer schafft den Regenfluten eine Bahn,
wer ebnet Blitz und Donner den Weg,
26 damit Gewitterregen niedergehn
auf unbewohntes Land, über unwegsame Wüsten,
27 damit die ausgedörrte Steppe durchtränkt wird
und frisches Grün aus dem Boden sprießt?
28 Hat der Regen einen Vater?
Wer lässt den Tau entstehen?
29 Wer bringt Eis und Frost hervor,
30 wenn das Wasser hart wird wie Stein,
wenn Seen und Flüsse zugefroren sind?
31 Knüpfst du die Bänder des Siebengestirns,
kannst du den Gürtel des Orion öffnen?
32 Lässt du die Sternbilder erscheinen,
je nach Jahreszeit,
bringst du den Großen und den Kleinen Wagen herauf?
33 Hast du die Gesetze des Himmels entdeckt,
und kannst du sie auf die Erde übertragen?
34 Rufst du den Wolken einen Befehl zu,
damit sie Regen auf dich herabströmen lassen?
35 Schleuderst du die Blitze in ihr Ziel?
Sagen sie: ›Wir stehen dir zu Diensten‹?
36 Wer lässt die Wolken wohlgeordnet ziehen?
Wer bestimmt das Wetter nach einem weisen Plan?[b]
37 Wer ist so klug, dass er die Zahl der Wolken kennt?
Wer schüttet ihr Wasser auf die Erde nieder,[c]
38 wenn dort der Boden hart geworden ist wie Eisen
und die Schollen aneinander kleben?
39 Erjagst du die Beute für die Löwin,
stillst du den Hunger ihrer Jungen,
40 wenn sie sich in Höhlen verkriechen,
im Dickicht auf der Lauer liegen?
41 Wer lässt den Raben Futter finden,
wenn seine Jungen zu Gott schreien,
wenn sie hungrig und hilflos umherirren?
