God’s Works and Wisdom
37 “At this also my heart trembles,
And leaps from its place.
2 Hear attentively the thunder of His voice,
And the rumbling that comes from His mouth.
3 He sends it forth under the whole heaven,
His [a]lightning to the ends of the earth.
4 After it (A)a voice roars;
He thunders with His majestic voice,
And He does not restrain them when His voice is heard.
5 God thunders marvelously with His voice;
(B)He does great things which we cannot comprehend.
6 For (C)He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth’;
Likewise to the [b]gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.
7 He seals the hand of every man,
(D)That (E)all men may know His work.
8 The beasts (F)go into dens,
And remain in their lairs.
9 From the chamber of the south comes the whirlwind,
And cold from the scattering winds of the north.
10 (G)By the breath of God ice is given,
And the broad waters are frozen.
11 Also with moisture He saturates the thick clouds;
He scatters His [c]bright clouds.
12 And they swirl about, being turned by His guidance,
That they may (H)do whatever He commands them
On the face of [d]the whole earth.
13 (I)He causes it to come,
Whether for [e]correction,
Or (J)for His land,
Or (K)for mercy.
14 “Listen to this, O Job;
Stand still and (L)consider the wondrous works of God.
15 Do you know when God [f]dispatches them,
And causes the light of His cloud to shine?
16 (M)Do you know how the clouds are balanced,
Those wondrous works of (N)Him who is perfect in knowledge?
17 Why are your garments hot,
When He quiets the earth by the south wind?
18 With Him, have you (O)spread out the (P)skies,
Strong as a cast metal mirror?
19 “Teach us what we should say to Him,
For we can prepare nothing because of the darkness.
20 Should He be told that I wish to speak?
If a man were to speak, surely he would be swallowed up.
21 Even now men cannot look at the light when it is bright in the skies,
When the wind has passed and cleared them.
22 He comes from the north as golden splendor;
With God is awesome majesty.
23 As for the Almighty, (Q)we cannot find Him;
(R)He is excellent in power,
In judgment and abundant justice;
He does not oppress.
24 Therefore men (S)fear Him;
He shows no partiality to any who are (T)wise of heart.”

37 Ja, darüber erzittert mein Herz und fährt auf von seiner Stelle!
2 Hört, hört auf das Donnern seiner Stimme und auf das Grollen, das aus seinem Mund hervorkommt!
3 Er lässt es dahinfahren unter dem ganzen Himmel, und sein Licht bis zu den Enden der Erde.
4 Hinter ihm her brüllt der Donner; er donnert mit seiner majestätischen Stimme, und er spart damit nicht, damit seine Stimme gehört werde.
5 Gott donnert mit seiner Stimme wunderbar; er tut große Dinge, die wir nicht verstehen.
6 Denn er gebietet dem Schnee: Falle auf die Erde! und lässt Regen fließen, heftige Regengüsse.
7 Dann zwingt er die Hand jedes Menschen zur Untätigkeit, damit alle Leute sein Werk erkennen möchten.
8 Da sucht das Wild seine Schlupfwinkel auf und bleibt in seinen Höhlen.
9 Aus der Kammer [des Südens] kommt der Sturm und von den Nordwinden die Kälte.
10 Durch den Hauch Gottes entsteht Eis, und die weiten Wasser frieren zu.
11 Mit Wasserfülle belastet er die Wolken; er zerstreut sein helles Gewölk.
12 Und dieses zieht ringsumher, wohin er es lenkt, wendet sich überallhin, um alles auszurichten, was er ihm befiehlt, auf dem ganzen Erdenrund
13 — bald zur Rute für sein Land, bald zur Wohltat lässt er es über sie kommen.
14 Nimm dies zu Ohren, Hiob; steh still und erwäge Gottes Wundertaten!
15 Weißt du, wie Gott ihnen Befehl gibt, wie er das Licht seiner Wolken leuchten lässt?
16 Verstehst du das Schweben der Wolke, die Wunder dessen, der an Verstand vollkommen ist?
17 Du, dem die Kleider zu warm werden, wenn es im Land schwül wird vom Südwind,
18 breitest du mit Ihm das Firmament[a] aus, dass es fest steht wie ein gegossener Spiegel?
19 Lehre uns, was wir ihm sagen sollen; wir können nichts vorbringen vor [lauter] Finsternis!
20 Soll ihm gemeldet werden, dass ich rede? Oder sollte der Mensch wünschen, vertilgt zu werden?
21 Jetzt zwar sieht man das Licht nicht, das doch leuchtend hinter den Wolken steht; aber der Wind wird sich erheben und sie wegfegen.
22 Von Norden her kommt Goldglanz; Gott ist von wunderbarer Pracht umgeben.
23 Den Allmächtigen finden wir nicht; er ist von unbegreiflicher Kraft, voll Recht und Gerechtigkeit; er beugt sie nicht.
24 Darum fürchten ihn die Menschen; er aber sieht keinen an, der sich selbst für weise hält![b]

37 At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place.
2 Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth.
3 He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.
4 After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.
5 God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.
6 For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.
7 He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.
8 Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.
9 Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north.
10 By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.
11 Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:
12 And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth.
13 He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.
14 Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
15 Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?
16 Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?
17 How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
18 Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?
19 Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
20 Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.
21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.
22 Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.
23 Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.
24 Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

Elihu Proclaims God's Majesty
37 “At this also my heart trembles
and leaps out of its place.
2 Keep listening to the thunder of his voice
and the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
3 Under the whole heaven he lets it go,
and his (A)lightning to the (B)corners of the earth.
4 After it (C)his voice roars;
(D)he thunders with his majestic voice,
and he does not restrain the lightnings[a] when his voice is heard.
5 God thunders wondrously with his voice;
he does (E)great things that we cannot (F)comprehend.
6 For to (G)the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour.
7 He (H)seals up the hand of every man,
that all men whom he made may (I)know it.
8 Then the beasts go into their (J)lairs,
and remain in their (K)dens.
9 From (L)its chamber (M)comes the whirlwind,
and (N)cold from the scattering winds.
10 By the breath of God (O)ice is given,
and (P)the broad waters are frozen fast.
11 He loads the thick cloud with moisture;
the clouds scatter his lightning.

(S)to accomplish all that he commands them

14 “Hear this, O Job;

15 Do you know how God lays his command upon them
and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine?
16 Do you know the balancings[b] of the clouds,
the wondrous works of him who is (Y)perfect in knowledge,
17 you whose garments are hot
when the earth is still because of the south wind?
18 Can you, like him, (Z)spread out the skies,
hard as a cast metal (AA)mirror?
19 Teach us what we shall say to him;
we cannot draw up our case because of (AB)darkness.
20 Shall it be told him that I would speak?
Did a man ever wish that he would be swallowed up?
21 “And now no one looks on the light
when it is bright in the skies,
when the wind has passed and cleared them.
22 Out of the north comes golden splendor;
God is clothed with (AC)awesome majesty.
23 The Almighty—we (AD)cannot find him;
he is (AE)great in power;
(AF)justice and abundant righteousness he will not (AG)violate.
24 Therefore men (AH)fear him;
he does not regard any who are (AI)wise in their own conceit.”[c]
