Het antwoord van Elihu (vervolg)
37 Als ik de donder hoor, klopt mijn hart in mijn keel.
Het bonst van angst.
2 Hoor het dreunen van de donder,
het geluid van Gods stem als Hij spreekt!
3 Hij laat de bliksemstralen langs de hemel flitsen.
Ze flitsen tot het eind van de aarde.
4 Zijn stem dreunt achter hen aan.
Hij dondert met machtige stem.
Het blijft bliksemen terwijl Hij dreunend spreekt.
5 Wonderlijk is het als Gods stem dondert.
Hij doet machtige dingen die wij niet begrijpen.
6 Hij laat het sneeuwen op aarde.
Hij laat de stortregen neerkletteren.
7 De mensen kunnen niet verder werken.
Ze begrijpen dat Hij die dingen doet.
8 De dieren zoeken een schuilplaats
en kruipen weg in hun holen.
9 De storm komt uit Gods voorraadkamer.
De wind brengt kou mee.
10 Door de adem van God bevriest het water.
Rivieren veranderen in ijs.
11 Ook maakt Hij de wolken zwaar van water.
Het zonlicht splijt de wolken weer uiteen.
12 De zon schijnt over de hele aarde
en doet wat Hij beveelt.
13 Soms straft Hij de aarde ermee,
soms is het een zegen.
Maar altijd is het volgens Gods bedoeling.
14 Luister hier alsjeblieft naar, Job.
Let op Gods wonderen.
15 Begrijp jij hoe God de bliksem stuurt?
Begrijp jij hoe Hij zijn licht over de aarde laat schijnen?
16 Begrijp jij hoe de wolken zijn opgehangen?
Begrijp jij iets van de wonderlijke dingen die de volmaakt wijze God doet?
17 Begrijp jij hoe je kleren en alles heet worden
als de hele aarde stil wordt van de hete zuidenwind?
18 Heb jij Hem geholpen om de hemel op te hangen,
de hemel die zo vast lijkt als een koperen spiegel?
19 Vertel jij ons maar wat we tegen Hem moeten zeggen.
Want wij hebben zeker niet genoeg verstand, dat we niets weten te zeggen.
20 Zou het Hem verteld worden als ik Hem iets wil zeggen?
Als iemand tot Hem spreekt, is dat vragen om gedood te worden!
21 Een mens kan niet naar de zon kijken als de hemel helder is
en de wind de wolken heeft weggeblazen.
22 In het noorden is dan een prachtige gouden glans te zien. Daar kunnen we nauwelijks naar kijken.
Gods hemelse macht en majesteit zijn nog veel stralender!
23 Wij kunnen de Almachtige God niet zien en niet begrijpen.
Hij is machtig en rechtvaardig.
24 Daarom hebben de mensen diep ontzag voor Hem.
Maar mensen die trots en eigenwijs zijn, ziet Hij niet eens.

Elihu Continues: God’s Ways Are Beyond Human Understanding
37 “My heart pounds because of this
and jumps out of its place.
2 Listen! Listen to the roar of God’s voice,
to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
3 He flashes his lightning everywhere under heaven.
His light flashes to the ends of the earth.
4 It is followed by the roar of his voice.
He thunders with his majestic voice.
He doesn’t hold the lightning back when his thunder is heard.
5 El’s voice thunders in miraculous ways.
It does great things that we cannot understand.
6 “He says to the snow, ‘Fall to the ground,’
and to the pouring rain, ‘Rain harder!’
7 He makes it impossible to do anything[a]
so that people will recognize his work.
8 Animals go into their dens
and stay in their lairs.
9 A storm comes out of its chamber.
It is cold because of the strong winds.[b]
10 El’s breath produces ice,
and the seas freeze over.
11 Yes, he loads the thick clouds with moisture
and scatters his lightning from the clouds.
12 He guides the clouds as they churn round and round
over the face of the inhabited earth
to do everything he orders them.
13 Whether for discipline,
or for the good of his earth,
or out of mercy,
he makes the storm appear.
14 “Open your ears to this, Job.
Stop and consider El’s miracles.
15 Do you know how Eloah controls them
and makes the lightning flash from his clouds?
16 Do you know how the clouds drift
(these are the miracles of the one who knows everything),
17 you whose clothes are hot and sweaty,
when the earth is calm under a south wind?
18 Can you stretch out the skies with him
and make them as firm as a mirror made of metal?
19 Teach us what we should say to him.
We are unable to prepare a case because of darkness.
20 Should he be told that I want to speak?
Can a person speak when he is confused?
21 People can’t look at the sun
when it’s bright among the clouds
or after the wind has blown and cleared those clouds away.
22 A golden light comes from the north.
A terrifying majesty is around Eloah.
23 Shadday, whom we can’t reach,
is great in power and judgment,
has more than enough righteousness,
and does not oppress.
24 That is why people should fear him.
He does not respect those who think they’re wise.”
Job 37
The Message
37 1-13 “Whenever this happens, my heart stops—
I’m stunned, I can’t catch my breath.
Listen to it! Listen to his thunder,
the rolling, rumbling thunder of his voice.
He lets loose his lightnings from horizon to horizon,
lighting up the earth from pole to pole.
In their wake, the thunder echoes his voice,
powerful and majestic.
He lets out all the stops, he holds nothing back.
No one can mistake that voice—
His word thundering so wondrously,
his mighty acts staggering our understanding.
He orders the snow, ‘Blanket the earth!’
and the rain, ‘Soak the whole countryside!’
No one can escape the weather—it’s there.
And no one can escape from God.
Wild animals take shelter,
crawling into their dens,
When blizzards roar out of the north
and freezing rain crusts the land.
It’s God’s breath that forms the ice,
it’s God’s breath that turns lakes and rivers solid.
And yes, it’s God who fills clouds with rainwater
and hurls lightning from them every which way.
He puts them through their paces—first this way, then that—
commands them to do what he says all over the world.
Whether for discipline or grace or extravagant love,
he makes sure they make their mark.
A Terrible Beauty Streams from God
14-18 “Job, are you listening? Have you noticed all this?
Stop in your tracks! Take in God’s miracle-wonders!
Do you have any idea how God does it all,
how he makes bright lightning from dark storms,
How he piles up the cumulus clouds—
all these miracle-wonders of a perfect Mind?
Why, you don’t even know how to keep cool
on a sweltering hot day,
So how could you even dream
of making a dent in that hot-tin-roof sky?
19-22 “If you’re so smart, give us a lesson in how to address God.
We’re in the dark and can’t figure it out.
Do you think I’m dumb enough to challenge God?
Wouldn’t that just be asking for trouble?
No one in his right mind stares straight at the sun
on a clear and cloudless day.
As gold comes from the northern mountains,
so a terrible beauty streams from God.
23-24 “Mighty God! Far beyond our reach!
Unsurpassable in power and justice!
It’s unthinkable that he’d treat anyone unfairly.
So bow to him in deep reverence, one and all!
If you’re wise, you’ll most certainly worship him.”
