God’s Works and Wisdom
37 “At this also my heart trembles,
And leaps from its place.
2 Hear attentively the thunder of His voice,
And the rumbling that comes from His mouth.
3 He sends it forth under the whole heaven,
His [a]lightning to the ends of the earth.
4 After it (A)a voice roars;
He thunders with His majestic voice,
And He does not restrain them when His voice is heard.
5 God thunders marvelously with His voice;
(B)He does great things which we cannot comprehend.
6 For (C)He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth’;
Likewise to the [b]gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.
7 He seals the hand of every man,
(D)That (E)all men may know His work.
8 The beasts (F)go into dens,
And remain in their lairs.
9 From the chamber of the south comes the whirlwind,
And cold from the scattering winds of the north.
10 (G)By the breath of God ice is given,
And the broad waters are frozen.
11 Also with moisture He saturates the thick clouds;
He scatters His [c]bright clouds.
12 And they swirl about, being turned by His guidance,
That they may (H)do whatever He commands them
On the face of [d]the whole earth.
13 (I)He causes it to come,
Whether for [e]correction,
Or (J)for His land,
Or (K)for mercy.
14 “Listen to this, O Job;
Stand still and (L)consider the wondrous works of God.
15 Do you know when God [f]dispatches them,
And causes the light of His cloud to shine?
16 (M)Do you know how the clouds are balanced,
Those wondrous works of (N)Him who is perfect in knowledge?
17 Why are your garments hot,
When He quiets the earth by the south wind?
18 With Him, have you (O)spread out the (P)skies,
Strong as a cast metal mirror?
19 “Teach us what we should say to Him,
For we can prepare nothing because of the darkness.
20 Should He be told that I wish to speak?
If a man were to speak, surely he would be swallowed up.
21 Even now men cannot look at the light when it is bright in the skies,
When the wind has passed and cleared them.
22 He comes from the north as golden splendor;
With God is awesome majesty.
23 As for the Almighty, (Q)we cannot find Him;
(R)He is excellent in power,
In judgment and abundant justice;
He does not oppress.
24 Therefore men (S)fear Him;
He shows no partiality to any who are (T)wise of heart.”

37 A tempestade me faz bater o coração,
como se ele fosse pular para fora do peito.
2 Escutem o estrondo da voz de Deus,
o trovão que sai da sua boca.
3 Ele solta relâmpagos por todos os lados do céu
e de uma ponta da terra até a outra.
4 Então ouve-se o rugido da sua voz,
o forte barulho do trovão;
e durante todo o tempo os relâmpagos não param de cair.
5 Deus troveja com a sua voz maravilhosa;
ele faz grandes coisas que não podemos compreender.
6 Deus manda que caia neve sobre a terra
e também fortes pancadas de chuva.
7 Assim, faz com que as pessoas fiquem em casa, sem poderem trabalhar,
para que todos saibam que é ele quem age.
8 Os animais entram nas suas tocas
e ali ficam escondidos.
9 As tempestades violentas vêm do Sul,
e o frio vem do Norte.
10 O sopro de Deus congela as águas,
que assim ficam cobertas de gelo.
11 Deus enche de água as nuvens,
e elas lançam os relâmpagos.
12 Seguindo a ordem de Deus,
as nuvens se espalham em todas as direções.
Elas fazem tudo o que Deus manda,
em toda parte, no mundo inteiro.
13 Deus faz cair chuva sobre a terra
ou para castigar a gente
ou para mostrar que tem amor por nós.
O infinito conhecimento de Deus
14 “Jó, pare um instante e escute;
pense nas coisas maravilhosas que Deus faz.
15 Será que você sabe como Deus dá a ordem
para que os relâmpagos saiam brilhando das nuvens?
16 Você sabe como as nuvens ficam suspensas no ar?
Isso é uma prova do infinito conhecimento de Deus.
17 Será que você, que fica sufocado de calor na sua roupa,
antes de vir a tempestade de areia trazida pelo vento sul,
18 será que você pode ajudar Deus a estender o céu
e fazer com que fique duro como uma placa de metal fundido?
19 Ensine-nos o que devemos dizer a ele,
pois não somos capazes de pensar com clareza.
20 Eu não teria o atrevimento de discutir com Deus,
pois isso seria pedir que ele me destruísse.
21 “Não é possível ver o sol quando está escondido pelas nuvens;
mas ele brilha de novo, depois que o vento passa e limpa o céu.
22 No Norte vemos uma luz dourada,
e a glória de Deus nos enche de profunda admiração.
23 Não podemos compreender o Todo-Poderoso,
o Deus de grande poder.
A sua justiça é infinita,
e ele não persegue ninguém.
24 Por isso, as pessoas o temem,
e ele não dá importância aos que acham que são sábios.”

37 “At this, my own heart trembles
and leaps out of its place.
2 Just listen to the rumbling of his voice,
to the thunder that comes from his mouth!
3 He sends it out under all of heaven,
his lightning to the ends of the earth.
4 There follows a sound, a roar —
he is thundering with his majestic voice,
and he keeps releasing [the lightning]
even while his voice is being heard.
5 “God thunders wonderfully with his voice,
he does great things beyond our understanding.
6 He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth!’ —
likewise to the light rain, also to the downpour.
7 He brings all human activity to a stop,
so that everyone he has made can know it.
8 Then the animals go into their lairs
and hibernate in their dens.
9 “Out of its chamber comes the storm,
with cold out of the north.
10 By the breath of God, ice is given,
and the wide waters freeze over.
11 He weighs the clouds down with moisture,
and they flash forth his lightning.
12 He, by his plans, turns them around,
so they do what he commands them anywhere on earth;
13 he brings them forth on the earth
sometimes to punish, sometimes to express his grace.
14 “Listen to this, Iyov!
Stop, and consider God’s wonders.
15 Do you know how God puts them in place,
how he causes lightning to flash from his cloud?
16 Do you know how he balances the clouds?
These are marvels of him who knows everything!
17 “You, sweltering in your clothing
as the earth lies still under a sultry south wind,
18 can you, with him, spread out the sky,
hard as a cast metal mirror?
19 Teach us what we should tell him,
for the darkness keeps us from organizing our case.
20 Is he to be told that I will speak?
Can a man speak at all when he is already swallowed up?
21 Now people don’t see the light,
which is bright in the sky;
but then the wind blows
and clears [the clouds] away.
22 Out of the north comes a golden glow,
fearsome majesty surrounding God.
23 Shaddai, whom we cannot find,
whose power is immense,
in his great righteousness
does not pervert justice.
24 This is why people fear him;
he does not consider those
who think of themselves as wise.”

Elihu Says God Has Authority over the Storm
37 “At this also my heart trembles,
And leaps from its place.
2 Listen closely to the (A)thunder of His voice,
And the rumbling that goes out from His mouth.
3 Under the whole heaven He lets it loose,
And His [a]lightning travels to the (B)ends of the earth.
4 After it, a voice roars;
He thunders with His majestic voice,
And He does not restrain [b]the lightning when His voice is heard.
5 God (C)thunders wondrously with His voice,
Doing (D)great things which we do not comprehend.
6 For to (E)the snow He says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
And to the [c](F)downpour and the rain, ‘Be strong.’
7 He (G)seals the hand of every person,
So that (H)all people may know His work.
8 Then the animal goes into its (I)lair
And remains in its [d]den.
9 From the [e](J)south comes the storm,
And from the north wind the cold.
10 From the breath of God (K)ice is made,
And the expanse of the waters is frozen.
11 He also (L)loads the clouds with moisture;

12 It changes direction, turning around by His guidance,

Or for (S)goodness, He causes it to [j]happen.
14 “Listen to this, Job;
Stand and consider the wonders of God.
15 Do you know how God establishes them,
And makes the [k]lightning of His clouds to shine?
16 Do you know about the hovering of the clouds,
The (T)wonders of One who is (U)perfect in knowledge,
17 You whose garments are hot
When the land is still because of the south wind?
18 Can you, with Him, (V)spread out the skies,
Strong as a cast metal mirror?
19 Teach us what we are to say to Him;
We (W)cannot present our case because of darkness.
20 Shall it be told Him that I would speak?
[l]Or should a man say that he would be swallowed up?
21 “Now people do not see the light which is bright in the skies;
But the wind has passed and cleared them.
22 From the north comes golden splendor;
Around God is awesome majesty.
23 The Almighty—(X)we cannot find Him;
He is (Y)exalted in power
And (Z)He will not violate (AA)justice and abundant righteousness.
24 Therefore people (AB)fear Him;
He does not (AC)regard any who are wise of heart.”
