Cuarto discurso de Eliú
36 Eliú continuó diciendo:
2 «Ten paciencia conmigo y te mostraré
que aún quiero decir más en favor de Dios.
3 Mi conocimiento proviene de muy lejos;
voy a demostrar que mi Hacedor está en lo justo.
4 Te aseguro que no hay falsedad en mis palabras;
¡tienes ante ti a la sabiduría en persona!
5 »Dios es poderoso, pero no rechaza al inocente;[a]
Dios es poderoso, y todo lo entiende.[b]
6 Al malvado no lo mantiene con vida;
al afligido le hace valer sus derechos.
7 Cuida siempre de los justos;
los hace reinar en compañía de reyes
y los exalta para siempre.
8 Pero, si son encadenados,
si la aflicción los domina,
9 Dios denuncia sus acciones
y la arrogancia de su pecado.
10 Les hace prestar oído a la corrección
y les pide apartarse del mal.
11 Si ellos le obedecen y le sirven,
pasan el resto de su vida en prosperidad,
pasan felices los años que les quedan.
12 Pero, si no le hacen caso,
sin darse cuenta cruzarán el umbral de la muerte.[c]
13 »Los de corazón impío abrigan resentimiento;
no piden ayuda aun cuando Dios los castigue.[d]
14 Mueren en la flor de la vida,
entre los que se prostituyen en los santuarios.
15 A los que sufren, Dios los libra mediante el sufrimiento;
en su aflicción, los consuela.[e]
16 »Dios te libra de las fauces de la angustia,
te lleva a un lugar amplio y espacioso,
y llena tu mesa con la mejor comida.
17 Pero tú te has ganado el juicio que merecen los impíos;[f]
el juicio y la justicia te tienen atrapado.
18 Cuídate de no dejarte seducir por las riquezas;
no te dejes desviar por el soborno.
19 Tus grandes riquezas no podrán sostenerte,
ni tampoco todos tus esfuerzos.
20 No ansíes que caiga la noche,
cuando la gente es arrancada de su sitio.[g]
21 Cuídate de no inclinarte a la maldad,
que por eso fuiste apartado de la aflicción.
22 »Dios es exaltado por su poder.
¿Qué maestro hay que se le compare?
23 ¿Quién puede pedirle cuentas de sus actos?
¿Quién puede decirle que se ha equivocado?
24 No te olvides de exaltar sus obras,
que con cánticos han sido alabadas.
25 Todo el género humano puede contemplarlas,
aunque solo desde lejos.
26 ¡Tan grande es Dios que no lo conocemos!
¡Incontable es el número de sus años!
27 ȃl derrama las gotas de agua
que fluyen como lluvia hacia los ríos;[h]
28 las nubes derraman su lluvia,
que cae a raudales sobre el género humano.
29 ¿Quién entiende la extensión de las nubes
y el estruendo que sale de su pabellón?
30 Ved a Dios expandir su luz en torno a él,
y bañar con ella las profundidades del océano.
31 Dios gobierna a las naciones
y les da comida en abundancia.
32 Toma entre sus manos el relámpago,
y le ordena dar en el blanco.
33 Su trueno anuncia la inminente tormenta,
y hasta el ganado presagia su llegada.

Eliú exalta la grandeza de Dios
36 Eliú siguió diciendo:
2 «Espérame un poco y yo te instruiré,
porque todavía tengo razones en defensa de Dios.
3 Traeré mi saber desde lejos
para atribuir justicia a mi Hacedor.
4 Porque de cierto no son mentira mis palabras:
¡Contigo está uno que es íntegro en sus conceptos!
5 »Dios es grande, pero no desestima a nadie.
Es poderosa la fuerza de su sabiduría.
6 No concede vida al impío,
pero a los afligidos otorga sus derechos.
7 No aparta sus ojos de los justos;
antes bien, con los reyes los sienta en trono y los exalta para siempre.
8 Aun si estuvieran sujetos con grillos,
aprisionados con cuerdas de aflicción,
9 él les daría a conocer las obras que hicieron
y cómo prevalecieron sus rebeliones.
10 Les despierta además los oídos a la corrección
y los exhorta a convertirse de la iniquidad.
11 Si ellos escuchan y le sirven,
acabarán sus días con bienestar
y sus años con dicha.
12 Pero si no escuchan, serán pasados a espada
y perecerán en su falta de sabiduría.
13 »Los hipócritas de corazón atesoran para sí la ira
y no clamarán cuando él los ate.
14 Fallecerá el alma de ellos en su juventud
y su vida entre los sodomitas.
15 Al pobre librará él de su pobreza;
en la aflicción despertará su oído.
16 Y también a ti te apartará de la boca de la angustia
a un lugar espacioso, libre de todo agobio,
y te preparará una mesa llena de manjares.
17 Mas tú te has llenado del juicio del impío,
en vez de sustentar el derecho y la justicia.
18 Por eso teme, no sea que él, en su ira, te quite con un golpe
que no puedas evitar ni aun pagando un gran rescate.
19 ¿Acaso hará él aprecio del oro, de tus riquezas
o de todo gran poderío?
20 No anheles la noche,
cuando los pueblos desaparecen de su lugar.
21 Guárdate de volver a la iniquidad,
la cual escogiste más bien que la aflicción.
22 Dios es excelso en su poder;
¿Qué maestro es semejante a él?
23 ¿Quién le ha trazado su camino?
¿Quién le dirá: “Eso lo has hecho mal”?
24 »Acuérdate de enaltecer su obra,
la cual los hombres contemplan.
25 Todos ellos la ven;
la mira el hombre desde lejos.
26 Dios es grande y nosotros no lo conocemos,
ni es posible seguir el curso de sus años.
27 Él atrae las gotas de agua
cuando el vapor se transforma en lluvia,
28 la que destilan las nubes,
y se vierte en raudales sobre los hombres.
29 ¿Quién podrá comprender cómo se expanden las nubes
y el sonido atronador de su morada?
30 Sobre él extiende su luz
y cubre con ella las profundidades del mar.
31 Bien que por tales medios castiga a los pueblos,
también los sustenta con abundancia.
32 Con las nubes encubre la luz;
las interpone y le manda que no brille.
33 Con el trueno declara su indignación
y la tempestad proclama su ira contra la iniquidad.

Elihu Proclaims God’s Goodness
36 Elihu also proceeded and said:
2 “Bear with me a little, and I will show you
That there are yet words to speak on God’s behalf.
3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar;
I will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
4 For truly my words are not false;
One who is perfect in knowledge is with you.
5 “Behold, God is mighty, but despises no one;
(A)He is mighty in strength [a]of understanding.
6 He does not preserve the life of the wicked,
But gives justice to the (B)oppressed.
7 (C)He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous;
But (D)they are on the throne with kings,
For He has seated them forever,
And they are exalted.
8 And (E)if they are bound in [b]fetters,
Held in the cords of affliction,
9 Then He tells them their work and their transgressions—
That they have acted [c]defiantly.
10 (F)He also opens their ear to [d]instruction,
And commands that they turn from iniquity.
11 If they obey and serve Him,
They shall (G)spend their days in prosperity,
And their years in pleasures.
12 But if they do not obey,
They shall perish by the sword,
And they shall die [e]without (H)knowledge.
13 “But the hypocrites in heart (I)store up wrath;
They do not cry for help when He binds them.
14 (J)They[f] die in youth,
And their life ends among the [g]perverted persons.
15 He delivers the poor in their affliction,
And opens their ears in oppression.
16 “Indeed He would have brought you out of dire distress,
(K)Into a broad place where there is no restraint;
And (L)what is set on your table would be full of (M)richness.
17 But you are filled with the judgment due the (N)wicked;
Judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 Because there is wrath, beware lest He take you away with one blow;
For (O)a large ransom would not help you avoid it.
19 (P)Will your riches,
Or all the mighty forces,
Keep you from distress?
20 Do not desire the night,
When people are cut off in their place.
21 Take heed, (Q)do not turn to iniquity,
For (R)you have chosen this rather than affliction.
22 “Behold, God is exalted by His power;
Who teaches like Him?
23 (S)Who has assigned Him His way,
Or who has said, ‘You have done (T)wrong’?
Elihu Proclaims God’s Majesty
24 “Remember to (U)magnify His work,
Of which men have sung.
25 Everyone has seen it;
Man looks on it from afar.
26 “Behold, God is great, and we (V)do not know Him;
(W)Nor can the number of His years be discovered.
27 For He (X)draws up drops of water,
Which distill as rain from the mist,
28 (Y)Which the clouds drop down
And pour abundantly on man.
29 Indeed, can anyone understand the spreading of clouds,
The thunder from His canopy?
30 Look, He (Z)scatters His light upon it,
And covers the depths of the sea.
31 For (AA)by these He judges the peoples;
He (AB)gives food in abundance.
32 (AC)He covers His hands with lightning,
And commands it to [h]strike.
33 (AD)His thunder declares it,
The cattle also, concerning [i]the rising storm.

36 Elihu also proceeded, and said,
2 Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee that I have yet to speak on God's behalf.
3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
4 For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee.
5 Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.
6 He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor.
7 He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.
8 And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction;
9 Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.
10 He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.
11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
12 But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.
13 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them.
14 They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.
15 He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression.
16 Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness.
17 But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee.
18 Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee.
19 Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.
20 Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place.
21 Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.
22 Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him?
23 Who hath enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity?
24 Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold.
25 Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off.
26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
27 For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:
28 Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly.
29 Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?
30 Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.
31 For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance.
32 With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt.
33 The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.
