Elihu Sharply Reproves Job

35 Then Elihu continued and said,

“Do you think this is according to (A)justice?
Do you say, ‘My righteousness is more than God’s’?
“For you say, ‘(B)What advantage will it be to [a]You?
(C)What profit will I have, more than if I had sinned?’
“I will answer you,
And your friends with you.
(D)Look at the heavens and see;
And behold (E)the clouds—they are higher than you.
“If you have sinned, (F)what do you accomplish against Him?
And if your transgressions are many, what do you do to Him?
“If you are righteous, (G)what do you give to Him,
Or what does He receive from your hand?
“Your wickedness is for a man like yourself,
And your righteousness is for a son of man.

“Because of the (H)multitude of oppressions they cry out;
They cry for help because of the arm (I)of the mighty.
10 “But (J)no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker,
Who (K)gives songs in the night,
11 Who (L)teaches us more than the beasts of the earth
And makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens?’
12 “There (M)they cry out, but He does not answer
Because of the pride of evil men.
13 “Surely (N)God will not listen to [b]an empty cry,
Nor will the Almighty regard it.
14 “How much less when (O)you say you do not behold Him,
The (P)case is before Him, and you must wait for Him!
15 “And now, because He has not visited in His anger,
Nor has He acknowledged [c]transgression well,
16 So Job opens his mouth [d]emptily;
He multiplies words (Q)without knowledge.”

Elihu Speaks of God’s Dealings with Men

36 Then Elihu continued and said,

“Wait for me a little, and I will show you
That there [e]is yet more to be said in God’s behalf.
“I will fetch my knowledge from afar,
And I will ascribe (R)righteousness to my Maker.
“For truly (S)my words are not false;
One who is (T)perfect in knowledge is with you.
“Behold, God is mighty but does not (U)despise any;
He is (V)mighty in strength of understanding.
“He does not (W)keep the wicked alive,
But gives justice to (X)the afflicted.
“He does not (Y)withdraw His eyes from the righteous;
But (Z)with kings on the throne
He has seated them forever, and they are exalted.
“And if they are bound in fetters,
And are caught in the cords of (AA)affliction,
Then He declares to them their work
And their transgressions, that they have (AB)magnified themselves.
10 (AC)He opens their ear to instruction,
And (AD)commands that they return from evil.
11 “If they hear and serve Him,
They will (AE)end their days in prosperity
And their years in (AF)pleasures.
12 “But if they do not hear, they shall [f]perish (AG)by the sword
And they will (AH)die without knowledge.
13 “But the godless in heart lay up anger;
They do not cry for help when He binds them.
14 [g]They die in youth,
And their life perishes among the (AI)cult prostitutes.
15 “He delivers the afflicted in [h]their (AJ)affliction,
And (AK)opens their ear [i]in time of oppression.
16 “Then indeed, He (AL)enticed you from the mouth of distress,
Instead of it, a broad place with no constraint;
And that which was set on your table was full of [j]fatness.

17 “But you were full of (AM)judgment on the wicked;
Judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 Beware that (AN)wrath does not entice you to scoffing;
And do not let the greatness of the (AO)ransom turn you aside.
19 “Will your [k]riches keep you from distress,
Or all the forces of your strength?
20 “Do not long for (AP)the night,
When people [l]vanish in their place.
21 “Be careful, do (AQ)not turn to evil,
For you have preferred this to (AR)affliction.
22 “Behold, God is exalted in His power;
Who is a (AS)teacher like Him?
23 “Who has appointed Him His way,
And who has said, ‘(AT)You have done wrong’?

24 “Remember that you should (AU)exalt His work,
Of which men have (AV)sung.
25 “All men have seen it;
Man beholds from afar.
26 “Behold, God is (AW)exalted, and (AX)we do not know Him;
The (AY)number of His years is unsearchable.
27 “For (AZ)He draws up the drops of water,
They distill rain from [m]the [n]mist,
28 Which the clouds pour down,
They drip upon man abundantly.
29 “Can anyone understand the (BA)spreading of the clouds,
The (BB)thundering of His [o]pavilion?
30 “Behold, He spreads His [p]lightning about Him,
And He covers the depths of the sea.
31 “For by these He (BC)judges peoples;
He (BD)gives food in abundance.
32 “He covers His hands with the [q]lightning,
And (BE)commands it to strike the mark.
33 “Its (BF)noise declares [r]His presence;
The cattle also, concerning what is coming up.

10 Hear, my son, and (A)accept my sayings
And the (B)years of your life will be many.
11 I have (C)directed you in the way of wisdom;
I have led you in upright paths.
12 When you walk, your (D)steps will not be impeded;
And if you run, you (E)will not stumble.
13 (F)Take hold of instruction; do not let go.
Guard her, for she is your (G)life.
14 (H)Do not enter the path of the wicked
And do not proceed in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, do not pass by it;
Turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they (I)cannot sleep unless they do evil;
And [a]they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble.
17 For they (J)eat the bread of wickedness
And drink the wine of violence.
18 But the (K)path of the righteous is like the (L)light of dawn,
That (M)shines brighter and brighter until the (N)full day.
19 The (O)way of the wicked is like darkness;
They do not know over what they [b](P)stumble.

John’s Questions

11 (A)When Jesus had finished [a]giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He departed from there (B)to teach and [b]preach in their cities.

(C)Now when (D)John, [c]while imprisoned, heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to Him, “Are You (E)the [d]Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: (F)the blind receive sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the (G)poor have the [e]gospel preached to them. And blessed is he [f]who (H)does not [g]take offense at Me.”

Jesus’ Tribute to John

As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into (I)the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? [h]But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ [i]palaces! [j]But what did you go out to see? (J)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it [k]is written,

(K)Behold, I send My messenger [l]ahead of You,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is [m]least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 (L)From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven [n]suffers violence, and violent men [o]take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is (M)Elijah who [p]was to come. 15 (N)He who has ears to hear, [q]let him hear.
