Het antwoord van Elihu (vervolg)
35 En Elihu ging verder:
2 Denk je dat het klopt
dat jij rechtvaardiger bent dan God?
3 Je zegt zelf: "Wat heb je eraan om goed te leven?
Wat heb ik nu méér, dan wanneer ik slechte dingen had gedaan?"
4 Ik zal het je uitleggen,
aan jou en je vrienden.
5 Kijk eens naar de hemel,
naar de wolken hoog boven je.
6 Als je slechte dingen doet,
wat doe je Hem daarmee voor kwaad?
Al doe je nog zoveel slechte dingen,
wat heeft Hij daar voor last van?
7 En als je leeft zoals Hij het wil,
wat geef je Hem daarmee?
Wat kun jij aan Hem geven?
8 Als je slecht bent, tref je daarmee alleen een ander mens.
Als je eerlijk bent, helpt dat alleen iemand anders.
9 Er wordt wel luid gejammerd over alle ellende,
en mensen roepen wel om hulp
als ze door anderen slecht worden behandeld,
10 maar niemand zegt: "Waar is God, mijn Maker?
Waar is God die ons lofliederen geeft in de nacht,
11 die ons verstandiger heeft gemaakt dan de dieren,
die ons wijzer maakt dan de vogels?"
12 En als ze al roepen, dan antwoordt Hij niet,
omdat Hij hen trots en eigenwijs vindt.
13 Nee, God luistert niet als zulke mensen tot Hem roepen.
De Almachtige God kijkt niet naar zulke mensen om.
14 Nu zeg jij dat je niets van Hem ziet,
dat je rechtszaak wel bij Hem ligt,
maar dat Hij niets doet.
15 Maar omdat Hij slechte mensen niet onmiddellijk straft,
en zich niet druk lijkt te maken om de ellende die anderen overkomt,
16 nu zet jij tevergeefs een grote mond op,
en zeg je allerlei domme dingen. (lees verder)

Elihu Condemns Job
35 And Elihu answered and said:
2 “Do you think this to be just?
Do you say, (A)‘It is my right before God,’
3 that you ask, (B)‘What advantage have I?
How am I better off than if I had sinned?’
4 I will answer you
and (C)your friends with you.
5 (D)Look at the heavens, and see;
and behold the clouds, which are higher than you.
6 If you have sinned, (E)what do you accomplish against him?
And if your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to him?
7 (F)If you are righteous, what do you give to him?
Or what does he receive from your hand?
8 Your wickedness concerns a man like yourself,
and your righteousness (G)a son of man.
9 “Because of the multitude of (H)oppressions people (I)cry out;
they call for help because of the arm of (J)the mighty.[a]
10 But none says, ‘Where is God my (K)Maker,
who gives (L)songs in the night,
11 who teaches us (M)more than the beasts of the earth
and makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens?’
12 There they (N)cry out, but he does not answer,
because of the pride of evil men.
13 Surely God does not hear an empty cry,
nor does the Almighty regard it.
14 How much less when you say that you (O)do not see him,
that the case is before him, and you are (P)waiting for him!
15 And now, because (Q)his anger does not punish,
and he does not take much note of transgression,[b]
16 Job opens his mouth in empty talk;
he (R)multiplies words (S)without knowledge.”
