35 Och Elihu tog till orda och sade:
2 Menar du att sådant är riktigt? Kan du påstå att du har rätt mot Gud,
3 du som frågar vad rättfärdighet gagnar dig, vad den båtar dig mer än synd?
4 Svar härpå vill jag giva dig, jag ock dina vänner med dig.
5 Skåda upp mot himmelen och se, betrakta skyarna, som gå där högt över dig.
6 Om du syndar, vad gör du väl honom därmed? Och om dina överträdelser äro många, vad skadar du honom därmed?
7 Eller om du är rättfärdig, vad giver du honom, och vad undfår han av din hand?
8 Nej, för din like kunde din ogudaktighet något betyda och för en människoson din rättfärdighet.
9 Väl klagar man, när våldsgärningarna äro många, man ropar om hjälp mot de övermäktigas arm;
10 men ingen frågar: »Var är min Gud, min skapare, han som låter lovsånger ljuda mitt i natten,
11 han som giver oss insikt framför markens djur och vishet framför himmelens fåglar?»
12 Därför är det man får ropa utan svar om skydd mot de ondas övermod.
13 Se, på fåfängliga böner hör icke Gud, den Allsmäktige aktar icke på slikt;
14 allra minst, när du påstår att du icke får skåda honom, att du måste vänta på honom, fastän saken är uppenbar.
15 Och nu menar du att hans vrede ej håller någon räfst, och att han föga bekymrar sig om människors övermod?
16 Ja, till fåfängligt tal spärrar Job upp sin mun, utan insikt talar han stora ord.

35 Elihu fortsatte:
2-3 Menar du att det är rätt av dig att först påstå att Gud kommer att frikänna dig, för att i nästa ögonblick fråga honom till vad gagn det är att avhålla sig från synd?
4 Jag ska svara dig och alla dina vänner.
5 Se upp mot himlen, högt över dig!
6 Skakar det himlen och får det Gud att lämna sin tron om du syndar? På vad sätt påverkar det honom, om du syndar gång på gång?
7 Eller är det till hans fördel att du är gudfruktig?
8 Dina synder kan bara skada en annan människa, liksom dina goda gärningar kan bli henne till hjälp.
9-10 De förtryckta kan kanske klaga under de rikas välde och för att de behandlas illa, men ingen av dem ropar till Gud och frågar: 'Var finns du, Gud, min Skapare, som låter lovsånger ljuda mitt i natten
11 och gör oss klokare än markens djur och himlens fåglar?'
12 Men när någon kommer och ropar ut denna fråga till honom, svarar han aldrig med att ögonblickligen straffa tyrannerna.
13 Nej, han hör inte deras rop.
14-15 Varför skulle han då lyssna till dig, som påstår att du inte kan se honom, att han aldrig ger dig rätt och att han inte bryr sig om att straffa de ogudaktiga.
16 Men du angriper honom med tomma ord. Job, du har talat som en dåre!

35 Then Elihu continued, saying:
2 Do you think it is just when you say,
“I am righteous before God”?
3 For you ask, “What does it profit You,[a]
and what benefit comes to me, if I do not sin?”(A)
4 I will answer you
and your friends with you.
5 Look at the heavens and see;
gaze at the clouds high above you.
6 If you sin, how does it affect God?
If you multiply your transgressions, what does it do to Him?
7 If you are righteous, what do you give Him,
or what does He receive from your hand?(B)
8 Your wickedness affects a person like yourself,
and your righteousness another human being.
9 People cry out because of severe oppression;
they shout for help because of the arm of the mighty.(C)
10 But no one asks, “Where is God my Maker,(D)
who provides us with songs in the night,(E)
11 who gives us more understanding than the animals of the earth
and makes us wiser than the birds of the sky?”(F)
12 There they cry out, but He does not answer,
because of the pride of evil men.(G)
13 Indeed, God does not listen to empty cries,
and the Almighty does not take note of it—
14 how much less when[b] you complain[c]
that you do not see Him,
that your case(H) is before Him
and you are waiting(I) for Him.
15 But now, because God’s anger does not punish
and He does not pay attention to transgression,[d]
16 Job opens his mouth in vain
and multiplies words without knowledge.(J)

Elihu Condemns Self-Righteousness
35 Elihu spoke again and said:
2 “Do you think this is right,
that you say, ‘My righteousness is before God’?
3 For you said, ‘What advantage will it be to me?
What profit will I have if I am cleansed from my sin?’
4 “I will answer you,
and your companions with you.
5 Look unto the heavens and see,
and behold the clouds that are higher than you.
6 If you sin, what do you accomplish against Him?
Or if your transgressions are multiplied, what does it do to Him?
7 If you are righteous, what does it give Him?
Or what does He receive from your hand?
8 Your wickedness may hurt a man like you,
and your righteousness may profit a son of man.
9 “Because of the many oppressions they cry out;
they cry out because of the arm of the mighty.
10 But none says, ‘Where is God my Maker,
who gives songs in the night,
11 who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth,
and makes us wiser than the birds of heaven?’
12 There they cry out, but He does not answer
because of the pride of evil men.
13 Surely God will not hear vanity,
nor will the Almighty regard it.
14 Although you say you do not see Him,
yet judgment is before Him,
and you must trust in Him.
15 But now, because He has not punished in His anger,
nor taken much notice of folly,
16 therefore Job opens his mouth in vain;
he multiplies words without knowledge.”
