Elihu påpeger Jobs selvretfærdighed
34 Elihu fortsatte:
2 „Hør godt efter, I vismænd,
lyt til mig, I som er så kloge.
3 Man må vurdere alt, hvad man hører,
ligesom man smager på maden, før man spiser den.
4 Lad os derfor i fællesskab finde ud af,
hvad der er sandt og rigtigt.
5 Job siger: ‚Jeg er uskyldig,
det er Gud, der gør mig uret.
6 Jeg regnes for en løgner, selvom jeg taler sandt,
jeg bliver straffet hårdt, skønt jeg ikke har syndet.’
7 Hvor har Job lært at tale sådan?
Det er jo en hån imod Gud.
8 Han må have tilbragt sin tid i dårligt selskab
med onde og gudløse mennesker.
9 Han påstår jo, at man intet får ud af
at leve retskaffent ind for Gud.
10 I vise mænd, vil I ikke give mig ret i,
at det er umuligt for Gud at være ond?
Den Almægtige kan ikke være uretfærdig.
11 Nej, vi ved, at han straffer mennesker for, hvad de har gjort.
Han lader dem opleve følgerne af deres synd.
12 Gud handler absolut ikke ondt,
den Almægtige er aldrig uretfærdig.
13 Han alene har al magt på jorden,
han opretholder og styrer verden.
14 Hvis Gud en dag besluttede
at trække sin livsånde til sig igen,
15 da ville alt levende uddø,
og menneskene igen blive til støv.
16 Tag nu og brug din forstand.
Prøv at forstå, hvad jeg siger.
17 Kunne Gud være den almægtige Dommer,
hvis han ikke var uangribelig?
Vil du anklage selve ‚Retfærdigheden’
og påstå, at han kan være uretfærdig?
18 Han dømmer konger og regenter
for deres onde og uretfærdige handlinger.
19 Han gør ikke forskel på folk,
men behandler rige og fattige ens.
Alle mennesker er jo skabt af Gud,
20 og de skal alle sammen dø en gang.
Uden varsel er livet slut,
og ingen kan gøre fra eller til.
21 Gud kender alle deres handlinger,
han ser alt, hvad de foretager sig.
22 Ingen steder findes så tæt et mørke,
at de onde kan skjule sig for Gud.
23 Gud behøver ikke at vente til dommens dag
med at straffe et menneske for dets synder.
24 Han afsætter magtfulde ledere uden forhør
og indsætter andre i deres sted,
25 for han kender deres onde handlinger
og kan vende deres skæbne på en enkelt nat.
26 Han straffer dem for deres ondskab
på en måde, så alle kan se det,
27 for de vendte sig bort fra Gud
og var ligeglade med hans vilje.
28 Deres magtmisbrug over for de svage
førte til et råb om hjælp, som Gud hørte.
29 Selv når Gud er tavs, kan du ikke dømme ham for det.
Hvis han skjuler sig, kan du ikke tvinge ham frem.
Han hersker jo over alt, hvad han har skabt,
30 så de gudløse ikke skal have magten
og undertrykke andre mennesker.
31 Hvad nu hvis et menneske siger til Gud:
‚Hvis jeg har syndet, vil jeg ikke gøre det mere.
32 Sig mig, hvad jeg har gjort forkert.
Hvis jeg har svigtet, lover jeg at forbedre mig.’
33 Mon så ikke Gud er nådig,
selv om du benægter, at han er det?
Om du vil bede om nåde, er op til dig.
Sig os, hvad du har i tanke.
34 Ethvert forstandigt menneske
vil være enig med mig og sige:
35 ‚Job taler uden indsigt.
Han ved ikke, hvad han snakker om.’
36 Er det mærkeligt, at Job bliver straffet så hårdt?
Han taler jo som de gudløse taler.
37 Ud over sin oprindelige synd
gør han nu oprør mod Gud
ved at vise foragt for vores vejledning
og ved stadig at anklage Gud.”

International Children’s Bible
34 Then Elihu said:
2 “Hear my words, you men who think you are wise.
Listen to me, you men who think you know a lot.
3 The ear tests words
as the tongue tastes food.
4 Let’s decide for ourselves what is right.
And let’s learn together what is good.
5 “Job says, ‘I am not guilty.
But God has refused me a fair trial.
6 Instead of getting a fair trial,
I am called a liar.
I have been seriously hurt,
even though I have not sinned.’
7 There is no other man like Job.
He takes insults as if he were drinking water.
8 He is around people who do evil.
He spends time with wicked men.
9 This is because he says, ‘It does not help a man
to try and please God.’
10 “So listen to me, you who can understand.
God All-Powerful can never do wrong!
It is impossible for God to do evil.
11 God pays a person back for what he has done.
God gives him what his actions deserve.
12 Truly God will never do wrong!
God All-Powerful will never twist what is right.
13 No one chose God to rule over the earth.
No one put him in charge of the whole world.
14 God could decide
to take away his spirit and breath.
15 If he did, all people would die together.
And they would all turn back into dust.
16 “If you can understand, hear this.
Listen to what I have to say.
17 Can anyone govern who hates what is right?
How can you blame God who is both fair and powerful?
18 God is the one who says to kings, ‘You are worth nothing.’
And he says to important people, ‘You are evil.’
19 God is not better to princes than other people.
He is not better to rich people than poor people.
This is because he made them all with his own hands.
20 They can die in a moment, in the middle of the night.
The rich are struck down, and then they pass away.
Powerful people die without man’s help.
21 “God watches where people go.
He sees every step they take.
22 There is no dark place or deep shadow
where those who do evil can hide from God.
23 God does not need to watch people more closely.
He does not need for men to come before him for judging.
24 Without asking questions, God breaks powerful people into pieces.
And he puts other people in their place.
25 This is because God knows what people do.
He defeats them in the night, and they are crushed.
26 He punishes them for the evil things they do.
He does it so that everyone else can watch.
27 This is because they stopped following God.
They did not care about any of his ways.
28 God lets the cry of poor people reach him.
He hears the cry of the needy.
29 But if God keeps quiet, who can blame him?
If he hides his face, no one can see him.
But God still rules over both men and nations.
30 He still keeps wicked men from ruling.
And he keeps them from trapping others.
31 “But suppose such a man says to God,
‘I am guilty, but I will not sin anymore.
32 Teach me what I cannot see.
If I have done wrong, I will not do it again.’
33 So, Job, should God reward you the way you want
when you will not change your heart and life?
You must decide, not I.
So tell me what you know.
34 “Men who understand speak.
And wise men who hear me say,
35 ‘Job speaks without knowing what is true.
His words show he does not understand.’
36 I wish Job would be tested completely
because he answered like an evil man!
37 Job has sinned, and now he turns against God.
He claps his hands as an insult.
And he speaks more and more against God.”

34 Furthermore Elihu answered and said,
2 Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.
3 For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.
4 Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.
5 For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.
6 Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.
7 What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?
8 Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.
9 For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.
10 Therefore hearken unto me ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
11 For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
12 Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
13 Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?
14 If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;
15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.
16 If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.
17 Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?
18 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?
19 How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.
20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.
21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.
22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
23 For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.
24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.
25 Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
26 He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:
28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.
29 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.
31 Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:
32 That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.
33 Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.
34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.
35 Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.
36 My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.
37 For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.
