La justice souveraine
34 Elihu reprit:
2 «Sages, écoutez mes propos!
Vous qui êtes des connaisseurs, prêtez l'oreille à ce que je vais dire!
3 En effet, l'oreille jauge les propos
tout comme le palais goûte les aliments.
4 Choisissons pour nous ce qui est juste,
sachons reconnaître entre nous ce qui est bon!
5 »Job dit en effet: ‘Je suis juste
et Dieu me refuse justice.
6 Alors que j'ai raison, je passe pour un menteur.
Ma blessure est incurable alors que je n’ai pas commis de transgression.’
7 »Y a-t-il un homme tel que Job,
qui boive l’insolence comme l'eau,
8 qui marche en compagnie de ceux qui commettent l’injustice,
qui fasse route avec les hommes méchants?
9 En effet, il a dit: ‘L'homme ne gagne rien
à mettre son plaisir en Dieu.’
10 »Ecoutez-moi donc, hommes de bon sens!
Dieu n’a rien à voir avec la méchanceté,
le Tout-Puissant n’a rien à voir avec l’injustice.
11 Il paie à l'homme le salaire de ses actes,
il traite chacun en fonction de sa conduite.
12 En vérité, Dieu ne commet pas le mal,
le Tout-Puissant ne fausse pas le droit.
13 »Qui l'a chargé de gouverner la terre?
Qui a confié le monde entier à ses soins?
14 S'il ne pensait qu'à lui-même,
s'il reprenait son esprit et son souffle,
15 toute créature expirerait d’un seul coup
et l'homme retournerait à la poussière.
16 »Si tu as de l'intelligence, écoute ceci,
prête l'oreille au son de mes paroles!
17 Celui qui déteste le droit pourrait-il vraiment régner?
Condamnerais-tu le juste, le puissant?
18 Dit-on aux rois: ‘Vous êtes des vauriens’
et aux princes: ‘Vous êtes des crapules’?
19 Lui, il ne favorise pas les chefs
et ne privilégie pas le riche face au pauvre,
parce que tous sont l'œuvre de ses mains.
20 En un instant, ils meurent.
Au milieu de la nuit, un peuple est ébranlé et disparaît,
le tyran est écarté sans aucune intervention humaine.
21 »En effet, Dieu est attentif à la conduite de l’homme,
il voit tous ses pas.
22 Il n'y a ni ténèbres ni ombre de la mort
assez obscures pour cacher ceux qui commettent l’injustice.
23 Dieu n'a pas besoin d'observer longtemps un homme
pour le faire entrer en jugement avec lui.
24 Il brise les grands sans avoir à faire d’enquête
et il les remplace par d’autres,
25 car il connaît leur manière d’agir.
En une nuit il les renverse et ils sont écrasés,
26 il les frappe comme des criminels,
en public. 27 C’est parce qu’ils se sont détournés de lui,
parce qu’ils n’ont pas prêté attention à toutes ses voies.
28 Ils ont fait monter vers lui le cri du faible,
or il entend le cri des plus humbles.
29 »S'il choisit la tranquillité, qui prononcera une condamnation?
S'il cache son visage, qui pourra le voir?
Il domine sur les nations aussi bien que sur les individus
30 pour empêcher l'homme impie de régner
et d’être un piège pour le peuple.
31 En effet, a-t-il déjà dit à Dieu:
‘J'ai supporté les conséquences de ma faute, je cesserai de faire le mal.
32 Montre-moi toi-même ce que je ne vois pas encore:
si j'ai commis des injustices, je n'en commettrai plus’?
33 »Est-ce d'après toi que Dieu rendra justice,
alors que tu fais preuve de mépris? C’est à toi de choisir, pas à moi.
Ce que tu sais, dis-le donc!
34 Les hommes de bon sens
ainsi que les sages qui m'écoutent me diront:
35 ‘Job parle sans rien savoir
et ses paroles manquent de discernement.
36 Que Job soit donc mis à l’épreuve jusqu’au bout,
puisqu'il répond comme le feraient des hommes adonnés au mal!
37 En effet, il ajoute la révolte à son péché;
il sème le doute au milieu de nous
et il multiplie ses paroles contre Dieu.’»

34 Und Elihu hob wieder an und sprach:
2 Höret, ihr Weisen, meine Worte,
und ihr Verständigen, merket auf mich!
3 Denn das Ohr prüft die Rede,
wie der Gaumen die Speise schmeckt.
4 Das Rechte wollen wir uns erwählen
und untereinander ausmachen, was gut ist.
5 Denn Hiob behauptet: „Ich bin gerecht,
aber Gott hat mir mein Recht entzogen.
6 Bei all meinem Recht werde ich zum Lügner gestempelt,
tödlich verwundet bin ich vom Pfeil - ohne Schuld!“
7 Wo ist ein Mann wie Hiob,
der Lästerung trinkt wie Wasser,
8 der so wie er in Gesellschaft der Übeltäter wandelt
und mit gottlosen Leuten umgeht?
9 Denn er hat gesagt: „Es nützt dem Menschen nichts,
wenn er mit Gott Freundschaft pflegt!“
10 Darum, ihr verständigen Männer, hört mir zu:
Fern sei es von Gott, sich Gewalttätigkeiten zu erlauben,
und von dem Allmächtigen, Unrecht zu tun;
11 sondern er bezahlt dem Menschen, wie er es verdient,
und läßt einem jeden widerfahren nach seinem Wandel.
12 Ja wahrlich, Gott tut kein Unrecht,
und der Allmächtige beugt das Recht nicht!
13 Wessen Obhut ist die Erde unterstellt,
und wer gibt acht auf die ganze Welt?
14 Wenn er nur noch auf sich selbst achtete
und seinen Geist und Odem wieder zu sich nähme,
15 so würde alles Fleisch miteinander vergehen
und der Mensch wieder zum Staube kehren.
16 Hast du nun Verstand, so höre dies
und merke auf die Stimme meiner Worte!
17 Könnte auch einer, der das Recht haßt, herrschen,
oder willst du den Gerechten, den Mächtigen, verdammen?
18 Darf man zum König sagen: Du Nichtsnutz!
und zu den Edlen: Ihr seid ungerecht?
19 wieviel weniger zu dem, der die Person der Fürsten nicht ansieht
und den Reichen nicht mehr achtet als den Armen;
denn sie sind alle seiner Hände Werk.
20 Plötzlich sterben sie,
mitten in der Nacht;
Völker wanken und gehen dahin,
und er beseitigt Tyrannen ohne Menschenhand.
21 Denn Gottes Augen sind auf die Wege eines jeden gerichtet,
und er sieht jeden Schritt, den einer macht.
22 Es gibt keine Finsternis und keinen Todesschatten,
wo die Übeltäter sich verbergen könnten.
23 Ja, er braucht den Menschen, der vor Gott zu Gerichte geht,
nicht erst noch zu untersuchen.
24 Er zerschmettert Gewaltige ohne Untersuchung
und setzt andere an deren Statt.
25 Weil er ihre Werke kennt,
darum kehrt er sie um über Nacht, und sie werden zermalmt.
26 Als Gottlose züchtigt er sie
vor aller Augen darum,
27 daß sie von ihm abgefallen sind
und keinen seiner Wege beachtet haben,
28 und weil des Armen Geschrei zu ihm gelangt ist
und er das Schreien der Unterdrückten erhört hat.
29 Wenn er Frieden gibt, wer will verdammen?
Wenn er aber sein Angesicht verbirgt, wer kann ihn schauen?
[So handelt er] sowohl über einem Volk, als auch über dem einzelnen Menschen,
30 damit nicht gottlose Menschen regieren
und das Volk in Fallstricke gerät.
31 Darf man zu Gott sagen:
Ich muß [Strafe] tragen und habe doch nichts verbrochen?
32 [Nein, sondern:] Was ich nicht sehe, lehre du mich,
und habe ich Unrecht getan, so will ich's nicht mehr tun!
33 Soll Er nach deinem Sinn Vergeltung üben,
weil du verwirfst? Denn du mußt wählen, und nicht ich;
was du weißt, das sage an!
34 Verständige Männer werden mir zustimmen
und jeder weise Mann, der mir zuhört:
35 Hiob redet wie ein Unwissender,
und seine Worte zeugen nicht von Verstand.
36 Möchte Hiob fort und fort geprüft werden,
weil er sich zu den gottlosen Leuten geschlagen hat!
37 Denn zu seiner Sünde fügt er Abfall hinzu,
er verhöhnt uns und redet viel wider Gott!

2 “Hear my words, you wise men;
listen to me,(A) you men of learning.
3 For the ear tests words
as the tongue tastes food.(B)
4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right;(C)
let us learn together what is good.(D)
5 “Job says, ‘I am innocent,(E)
but God denies me justice.(F)
6 Although I am right,
I am considered a liar;(G)
although I am guiltless,(H)
his arrow inflicts an incurable wound.’(I)
7 Is there anyone like Job,
who drinks scorn like water?(J)
8 He keeps company with evildoers;
he associates with the wicked.(K)
9 For he says, ‘There is no profit
in trying to please God.’(L)
10 “So listen to me,(M) you men of understanding.(N)
Far be it from God to do evil,(O)
from the Almighty to do wrong.(P)
11 He repays everyone for what they have done;(Q)
he brings on them what their conduct deserves.(R)
12 It is unthinkable that God would do wrong,(S)
that the Almighty would pervert justice.(T)
13 Who appointed(U) him over the earth?
Who put him in charge of the whole world?(V)
14 If it were his intention
and he withdrew his spirit[a](W) and breath,(X)
15 all humanity would perish(Y) together
and mankind would return to the dust.(Z)
16 “If you have understanding,(AA) hear this;
listen to what I say.(AB)
17 Can someone who hates justice govern?(AC)
Will you condemn the just and mighty One?(AD)
18 Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’
and to nobles,(AE) ‘You are wicked,’(AF)
19 who shows no partiality(AG) to princes
and does not favor the rich over the poor,(AH)
for they are all the work of his hands?(AI)
20 They die in an instant, in the middle of the night;(AJ)
the people are shaken and they pass away;
the mighty are removed without human hand.(AK)
21 “His eyes are on the ways of mortals;(AL)
he sees their every step.(AM)
22 There is no deep shadow,(AN) no utter darkness,(AO)
where evildoers can hide.(AP)
23 God has no need to examine people further,(AQ)
that they should come before him for judgment.(AR)
24 Without inquiry he shatters(AS) the mighty(AT)
and sets up others in their place.(AU)
25 Because he takes note of their deeds,(AV)
he overthrows them in the night(AW) and they are crushed.(AX)
26 He punishes them for their wickedness(AY)
where everyone can see them,
27 because they turned from following him(AZ)
and had no regard for any of his ways.(BA)
28 They caused the cry of the poor to come before him,
so that he heard the cry of the needy.(BB)
29 But if he remains silent,(BC) who can condemn him?(BD)
If he hides his face,(BE) who can see him?
Yet he is over individual and nation alike,(BF)
30 to keep the godless(BG) from ruling,(BH)
from laying snares for the people.(BI)
31 “Suppose someone says to God,
‘I am guilty(BJ) but will offend no more.
32 Teach me what I cannot see;(BK)
if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’(BL)
33 Should God then reward you on your terms,
when you refuse to repent?(BM)
You must decide, not I;
so tell me what you know.
34 “Men of understanding declare,
wise men who hear me say to me,
35 ‘Job speaks without knowledge;(BN)
his words lack insight.’(BO)
36 Oh, that Job might be tested to the utmost
for answering like a wicked man!(BP)
37 To his sin he adds rebellion;
scornfully he claps his hands(BQ) among us
and multiplies his words(BR) against God.”(BS)

8 Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.
9 For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.
10 Therefore hearken unto me ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
11 For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
12 Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
13 Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?
14 If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;
15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.
16 If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.
17 Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?
18 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?
19 How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.
20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.
21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.
22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
23 For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.
24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.
25 Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
26 He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:
28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.
29 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.
31 Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:
32 That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.
33 Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.
34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.
35 Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.
36 My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.
37 For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.

34 Elihu further answered and said:
2 “Hear my words, you wise men;
Give ear to me, you who have knowledge.

Let us know among ourselves what is good.
5 “For Job has said, (B)‘I am righteous,
But (C)God has taken away my justice;
6 (D)Should I lie concerning my right?
My [a]wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’
7 What man is like Job,
(E)Who drinks [b]scorn like water,
8 Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity,
And walks with wicked men?
9 For (F)he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing
That he should delight in God.’
10 “Therefore listen to me, you [c]men of understanding:
(G)Far be it from God to do wickedness,
And from the Almighty to commit iniquity.
11 (H)For He repays man according to his work,
And makes man to find a reward according to his way.
12 Surely God will never do wickedly,
