Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

⁹ “When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her^(A) and shared her luxury^(B) see the smoke of her burning,^(C) they will weep and mourn over her.^{(D) 10} Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off^(E) and cry:

²⁴ The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them.

²⁰ But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove^(A) before everyone, so that the others may take warning.^(B)

²⁴ “And they will go out and look on the dead bodies^(A) of those who rebelled^(B) against me; the worms^(C) that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched,^(D) and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

¹¹ “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household^(A) I am going to bring calamity on you.^(B) Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.^{(C) 12} You did it in secret,^(D) but I will do this thing in broad daylight^(E) before all Israel.’”

²¹ Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death.^(A) You must purge the evil^(B) from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.^(C)
